With the help of my chainsaw, I'll cut down all the overgrown and shaded out dead pines which I will cut into log to build a sugar shack. The pines in this replanted forest are fat too overgrown and have been grossly mismanaged. The trees should have be cut and thinned nearly a decade ago. Removing the dead trees is a good start to rehabilitating the forest. Later, we will thin even more and get the forest ready for replanting and rejuvenating.
In this first part, we will mostly be cutting trees and then getting the site chosen. It's a lot of tree felling, and hauling to get our raw materials.

"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle. the reason your lighter didnt light was because it was cold next time try storing it under your coat next to your body for a few minutes to warm up the butane. the warmer the gas the taller the flame.
Wick lighters like Zippos will work in the cold. Compressed gas lighters need to be warmed up
Everyone down here in the states doesn’t see the point in cleaning the forest floor..... until a fire starts.
This book is Awesome! I love the Lean-To-Shed the most (page 98). The plan ruclips.net/user/postUgkxo4aMFkUegBx-KHPIJlfwKPHu7kQXAR9N is to attach it to the back of my brick house. I also like how they walk you through the many different steps of construction, which is important for the less experienced like me.
Where does one acquire a don to help build forts 😂💕
Only in Canada
I too would like a Don 😅🤣
@@33nivag335 I'm in Canada and I'd like a Don too! Will he accept Bitcoin as payment? :)
He is Don in 60 seconds.
The Doninator!
I feel like a kid again getting up on Saturday morning looking for my favorite cartoon. Only now I am looking for a new video from Kevin. And yes stihl should become a sponsor.
Connect the water heater to a timer to turn on and off in interval's all day, that's how we set up or cow tanks.
Oh man... I could literally FEEL the frustration with the lighter on every “click”
Forest management is super important so you're actually being good stewards of the land. :)
I lost it when you said Narnia 😝 you’re so delightful Kevin!
You trying to light that lighter was like an episode from Family Guy - the repetitiveness of the attempt had me in stitches!!!🤣🤣
How exciting! Another new project. I love when you, Don, and Chris get those mental gears turning.
"Don's not really going to be using the chainsaw"......Immediately shows Don using the chainsaw
Take it easy on Don us viewers need him around for a long time.
Haha, I feel you on the lighter. At the minute in my van I have a 2 burner camper stove, hit the ignition and there's nothing, use one of those lighters and it lights, use the lighter by itself and no flame.
They go out on a whim, breath a little heavy near them and off they go.
Stick with the blow torch.
Why not use matches? You can buy boxes of triple length ones.
Awesome project! Great to thin out a bunch of deadwood. What fun!
Another great Saturday morning! Thanks you guys!
Cut all the pine out and plant sugar maples for your great grandchildren to harvest maple syrup. Won't help you much, but pancakes in 2120 will thank you.
You can also tap Black Walnut, Manitoba Mapple, Elder, Birch
It would do better if you only left the best pines and platined the sugar maples (shade tolerant for the first 5 years or so)
@@bennetwilson8122 There may be many maples on the property now. It is "Planted"
Don’t let tree huggers bother you. They are emotionally ignorant. I’m just loving your channel! Also love your humor and personality. I notice Canadians like to use the long “o” sound in words such as “process” and “project” - too cute.
You never know what’s coming next with Kevin but you know it’s gonna be good
Fire lighter ---- Saw dust -- diesel -- soap flakes all mixed together in a bucket --- and make in to golf ball size balls
everybody needs a Don for a friend.
I like that game of extreme dominoes
Kevin, butane doesnt really work below 0C very well; that's why camp stoves use isobutane that is good down to -10c or so. I am trying ouy my homemade hot tent right now and left a lighter in it with the stove off. It was -5c in here and the Bic wouldnt light; I had to warm it in my hands for a bit so it could warm up enough. Propane is good to like -40 if used with a low btu device
Butane boils at 30°F. Keep the lighter in an inside pocket and it will work just fine. In Canada and northern US States we use liquid propane for grilling. Propane boils at about -30°F. In southern US States they use butane gas for grilling. This past week a lot of Texans discovered that their grills would not light when temperatures dropped to near 0°.
Excellent as always . Can’t wait to see the sugar shack up and in use .
You'd think tree huggers would appreciate responsible forestry management.
(looks at the West coast states)
no, I don't think they would
and they were even warned about it but still didn't listen
@@friedrichwilhelmvonsteuben7952 They didn’t have their prisoners clearing the forest floor because of covid and the electric grid was old and shitty. That’s what you get when everyone is profit motivated. Those types of people cut corners wherever they can.
@@cooper5324 private companies are not in charge of public land management, the state govts are
Forest fires happen the reason that for example that the fires in Australia were so bad and caused so many deaths was that the tree huggers stopped the government from creating fire breaks controlled burns etc in the name of ecology! Of course this directly led to millions of those critters they were trying to "save" turning crispy but I think over 80 human deaths.
Definitely why there are fires in California!
I could watch you guys cut down trees all day. Thanks for making the videos!
ruclips.net/video/6cDuR5ATbHY/видео.html🐒🙉
Love your dry humour and amazing builds. You will get 1.000.000 subs. You and Chris awesome to watch. And beautiful families.
For future references, the fire starters are easier when you dip tissue or toilet paper in wax, doesn't matter what type they burn for about 5 minutes when you use double sheets, obviously you want to use a double boil system such as an old saucer inside a pot of boiling water and dip both sides then let dry
This channel is like a Canadian Art Attack! love it
Yes
It amazes me the knowledge that you have, I'm kinda jealous. That's why I'm also thankful for your channel because you share that knowledge with us. I can't wait to see the sweet sugar shack all completed and I do advise that you install the rammed earth foundation first. That kind of foundation isn't something you can work on with the building jacked up above you unfortunately.
Kevin, I just bought one of those Geneva lighters and you are right even on the high setting the flame is tiny and if your outside good luck getting it to light. So, I took mine apart and turned up the flame from the inside. Now on high, the flame is a good 3-4 inches high. Needless to say, I have to keep it on low now. LOL! It's definitely better than before. All you do is take out the 1 screw, pull the red collar off, and with the lighter laying flat take off the side panel. Next slide the low high lever off the wheel put the lever in the low position and put it back on the wheel and turn it to high. You can do this a couple times if you want but I think just twice will do the job. Then put it back together the opposite way you took it apart and you have yourself a good high flame lighter. Hope this hack helped. Now you don't have to waste money by throwing it out and other than it not lighting due to the cold this lighter will work well. I love your channel and the things you build are pretty cool. Especially for not spending hardly any money on all the things you have built so far. Keep the videos coming. They're great and I find you funny as well. Stay safe out there.
I find it interesting that we have to do that to make it work. I'll give it a whirl next time I have some patience
Your wit has no bounds. Continue👍
Hey Don a wee bit of parafin wax and dryer lint makes awesome fire starters use a cardboard egg carton , pour the parafin over the lint in the egg carton . Makes 12 or 18
Please don't apologize for cutting trees. I think your audience understands forest management, and the right way to take care of land.
Ducks were saying "quiet Kevin we're trying to quack over here!"
Kelvin; yeah you are right *winter* is too cold to build anything! And I 👀 that you boys are so thickly dressed to keep warm from the cold!. Yeah you are right there are times to add more tools and gadgets to build something new. I hope your sugar shack is successfully done. Take care sweetie! Awaiting the build up of it. Love❤
right on, another build video
I need a Don too 🤣🤣 I’m glad you explained what a sugar shack is, I’m a city gal and had no idea what that was. I really love the homestead. Great vlog.
Butane lighters don't work when they're cold.
I was coming to say the same thing
You can sometimes shake them and they'll work for 10 seconds or so. Or like other people said, heat it up.
@@jimmoody1662 I was coming to say the same thing too. Butane compresses and will not vaporize below 31 degrees Fahrenheit. I found that out the hard way needing to cook outside on a butane stove one weekend that was well below zero a number of years ago..
Unless you're a welder... then definitely DO NOT carry a lighter in your pocket.
@@wannabejeeper welder here, can confirm, my buddy set his junk on fire xD
the sawdust in a tube bit gave me a good loud chuckle
Don is correct. You need to put approved stickers on your hard hat. The glue from some stickers can compromise the plastic of the hard hat. I myself, highly doubt that would ever happen. They're just covering their butts
Or their...... heads.
Sorry. I had to. I'm a dad 😎
I had to Google it when Don said it. I never knew that until now
Yeah they say dont put anything on your hardhat. Yet when orientation is dont they give you a sticker to put on your hardhat lol
Love your creativity and hard work... Don 😂
If you warm the lighter with your hands the butane will pressurize and turn to gas and the lighter will work.
Yes you can place stickers on your hard hat. You have place them at least one inch from the edges. This is so if you are welding, grinding or around sparks, hot heat, etc they will not burn you if they catch on fire. The stickers come under fire safety. They have no effects on your hard hat.
I hope Don gets to enjoy all the conveniences that he has helped build? You must like your maple syrup LOL 😂😂😂. Cheers, Sean
Can you fit “Is it the right way to do it? I don’t know, it’s what I’m doing” on Kevin’s new merchandise...🤣🤣🤣👍👍👍
Completely the catch phrase for this channel. At least one of a few. 😅
Cursing in the woods is my favorite catch phrase
@@jonnygranville281 soooo true 👍👍👍
Good to see the ducks are still around
Kevin good work in clearing the forrest and harvesting the wood enjoyed 👍🏻 sure i will enjoy the maple hut build even more 👍🏻👏🏴
Trees never cooperate with the plan. I think it's their last great act of defiance.. 😆.
Even in death they defy, lol!
You guys are doing an awesome job!
🤣🤣the Mr. No pants🤣🤣
my Son, makes firestarters out of sawdust and wax, and they work pretty good
Look at Loblaws for a BBQ lighter. My wife works there and brought a few home, they have a bendy neck and are little blow torches. They'd start your fire nice and fast.
Your a ability to make just about anything fun is great!
Don't forget the fire extinguisher... 😉
....still low hanging fruit.
Anyhow congrats on your homestead. Your Sauna and your tool shed are two of my favorites.
Hope you attempt to build another smoke house... honestly.
Your lumber jack skills are astonishingly amazing!
I think the resin moves outwardly and
hardens when you strip the bark of the pines- makes impermeable to weather and bugs.
Great vid
That makes sense.
There was an old man near me who had 40 acres of maple, he inherited from his Grandpa. He had a big sugar shack, that a local artist (Terry Redlin) painted. (Night Mapling)
Saturday uplands are awesome
I can’t believe I went a whole day without checking your newest upload.
You’ll look back on these days and the backbreaking work will all be worth the memories.
The subscribers are just flowing in! Great work again Kevin!! Love this channel and everything it has to offer.
Tim Horton cup trays are excellent fire starters!
Metal filing cabinet makes a simple fire box...
Lot of work for a tasty treat
Absolutely love love love your channel.
If I had a forest to manage, I would absolutely buy the simple tree jack your saw mill company sell for pushing over tree's in whatever directing your require (so easy and sure) it's a no brainer.
Great idea with the board!
thinning only the dead trees won't fix the over stocking in the stand, space the live trees so their crowns have space / light on 3 sides. 20 - 30ft spacing at the base should do it.
I agree. First step is the removal of the dead standing... The recommendation was to remove every fourth row of trees then. Every 5-6 tree of the remaining rows... There is a pile of work to do.
You are getting there. Keep cutting trees.😀👍👋🥞🥞🥞
Such a joy to see you guys on a Saturday morning. Sweeter than the maple syrup 🥰. You’re so much fun to watch and anticipate each week what you’ll do next
Next thing he knew he had cut down every tree in the forest, however none of them have fallen. It is now a game of big boy jenga
As you are becoming more and more efficient, you should get a chipper tossing all those limbs in there, then put all the chips in water buckets and compress the chips in to bricks, then dry them out for 30-60 days (depending on how fine the cups are) and burn them, great raven warmth for longer.
Egg carton, dryer lint and wax make outstanding fire starters lasting around 10 minutes each.
Just found your videos yesterday and I love the vids keep it up
As for the fire starter, you need air flow. I made one with dryer lint in a TP tube wrapped in newspaper. Had to deconstruct it to make it work. Lint placed lightly into a tube is best.
Oh, FUN!!! Wow, you really had me laughing at your 3 stuck trees!!! I was envisioning a whole row of them!!!!! Lol! Glad you were being safe though. You and Don are quite the work team, nice of your brother to help also. That is going to be so (pun up ahead) SWEET! :) So look forward to your videos and hilarious shenanigans!!! Stay warm and safe. Glad you upgraded the duck's water supply to 5 stars! Peace and Good Fortune and Good Health to you and your family and friends.
I feel like an idiot never realized Beardy was your brother! Love the ingenuity. Keep up the amazing work. @Stihl sponsor this guy!
Outdoor barrel saunas look cool and can use a wood oven as the heat source. Watch this video to see the full process of assembly the barrel sauna
I'm really glad you've kept the ducks.. Channel mascots, imo
Still say a dug-out house would probably be best, just 18"-24" down the soil should be >45 degrees.
I enjoyed watching you fell the trees 🌳 🌳 🌲 🎄👍💕😊😊😊
Love Talkative Don!! Enjoy your videos. ❤️from Tennessee!!!
Tractor and chain guy! I'm old the tractor can do so much!
Finally making the sugar shack. I remember watching your brother talk about it before you started the original cabin at this build.
Exciting!
Looking forward to seeing how it turns out
That was a teaser video, lol, looking forward to the next episode, tell Don to make the sawdust fire starters, you can market them as fire dust from the great North, sure there would be a market for them, until next time, peace my brother.
I use cardboard egg cartons, candle wax, shredded paper, dryer lint, cotton balls saved from pill bottles, mix the stuff put it into egg carton cups, melt and drip some wax to hold the stuff together and let dry. Break off pieces and use for starting fires. Sawdust would work too, but mixing two or three of the above together adds air pockets - Don’s sawdust may be too tightly packed.
So nice that you have a lumber supply In your backyard, Kevin! :) But that means more projects, so yay!!
Great Canadian outdoor channel: Wood Fire & Maple Syrup!!! Haha! Keep doing what your doing👍 Your having a blast for sure with your projects... People really enjoy your take on Utubing compared to your brother. Thanks for your videos.. Keep them coming👍 B Deacon Brandon Manitoba
As it seems your creating a shack village I suggest a two story kid sized house that looks magical.
Take care Don ! You too! Great video !
Love how this is going, forest is looking much cleaner! I fear nobody will listen to common sense though, trees need light and space to grow, otherwise they can end up rotting to the roots and that's when it gets dangerous! There's a VERY big difference between deforestation and helping new trees populate, I'd honestly of cut a few more back myself. :)
First steps.. clear the dead.. following steps.. remove marginalized live trees to open the canopy.
I'm SOOOO jealous!
You're having way too much fun! 😁👍
The closest thing I ever had to a big brother passed away 2 years ago today.
I recall him dropping one tree into another until 9 came down at once, instant parking lot.
Thanks for the memory
11 min isn't bad at all ... when your dropping trees like that your doing Damn good
cant wait for sugar bush season
Youre one of my favorite channels right now. I drop everything im doing to watch when you drop some more juicy building content
I worked in a Steel Mill and we all had stickers on our hard hats. This is the first time I ever heard of this. We had Fiber Glass type helmets around the heat and Hot Metal furnaces, no plastic helmets allowed, they would melt. I fact our company would give you some stickers to put on your Hard Hat.
The glue on some stickers can compromise the plastic. I don’t really think it does anything but if you got hurt and had a bunch of stickers the helmet/hard hat company could try to blame the stickers for causing thier products to not work properly
Yep they came up with a ruling that you cannot put stickers on your helmets
I've cut down groves of maple, and they're tricky as in they'll kill ya, but pines can still barber chair and you don't want to be pushing them if there is any uncut wood. They can swing back quick and gut you like a fish. No fun, kills a lot of guys. I also get a thick piece of hardwood as a bat and use that to break dead branches to limb. Much faster, but not so clean if you need super clean.
I like the super clean cut..
Wow! Fortunate you have a forest of dead pine. That's not around here. Great logs. The dry branches are great for kindling. Cutting them into manageable fuel is tedious but great for keeping kids busy. Had to Google a sugar shack. I'm from the city. Hehe.
Great project, Kevin!
Yes mate, loving the motivation!! great videos as always. From Scotland so totally feel the cold weather!! love it though...
