I've been practicing taiji quan martially for 30 years and met many different masters and teachers. I don't practice chen style but I must say that Mr Hsu is one of the best masters I've seen. His very sensible teaching, intelligent and well thought explanations, his huge knowledge adaptable to all styles and also the respect he has for his student (I've seen teachers bullying their students to show their superiority..) and overall his humble attitude is a very valuable teaching in its own! a big inspiration!

he is not concentrating on hitting 1 point... its about staying stable so having the ability to attack from any momentum -destroying ones foundation is to destabilizing opponent (without fix root point there is no force (you cant hit from water or in no-gravity :) because you push away yourself)) look the single whip he is not planning to hit his opponent with a fist, but on a line or big arc he is attacking 1st with shoulder, elbow and at the end with the hand, it can be a big push from center line to end of hand or 3 hits in a row. in taiji the whole body used to push away and depend on the distance hit with body or back, shoulder, hip, elbow, knee, hand, feet, etc... thats why the big circle and small circle movements, they always try to make the opponent's force kill from the start, from root or foundation, even the strongest opponent cant do any harm if he cant support its force (there is no vector without fixed start point) the easiest way to redirect force from perpendicular direction. i met a chen taiji master he is like an unbearable iron ball which spins and closing and your lucky if it just pushing u away :)

If i might help, he's talking in modern days striking is a point, or dots. And those dots/points are not connected. While CMA emphasized not only in point, but also line (point becomes line as it can be continued or transformed into another way of attack) and then line becomes surface attack as you use whole body

Mr. Hsu is famous and acknowledged martial artist and a master in art. At 80s years old, his movement is still swift. But one should now few things. First, his demonstration just show one simple possibility and there are plenty variations. Second, he has background of thunder tai chi, so his second demonstration shows a bit of link of that particular style.

I imagine what he acknowledged was how trash like this doesn't work. We make a lot of money from foreigners using it because they are gullible and don't understand very primitive ideas. Any western boxer in the realm of Mike Tyson would destroy a hundred Taiji guys without effort. Many of the best I've seen in Asia can last a little while - but because they cross train in other styles. Almost like MMA. A toddler could knock out a Taiji practitioner. We've tried and tried to make it work at the UFC. It doesn't.
Stop embarrassing yourself and use simple, hard, fast movements. MMA works and is deadly for a reason.

Thanks for making this video, my Martial Man. Chen style Taiji is by far my favorite style.
I have 16 years of Taijiquan under my "belt". I was one of the lucky ones who found a great school with various martial arts:
Taiji, all compulsary forms and more
    Wushu
    Wing Chun
    Sanda
    Kempo
    Bujinkan
It took a while, but years of martial arts with some good, some great teachers, I became a teacher myself.
Gotta give back to the art, right?
After years of self practice, karate, and MMA, I found an inheritor of Chen style Taiji in San Diego.
BTW, I am the luckiest man in the world.
5 years with this amazing master has transformed my Taiji from champion performance to long traditional forms and powerful Push Hands.
My fighting skills have improved over the years and I haven't found a good fight in a while... soon. After Coronavirus, I'm going out to see what is true martial arts.

Dear Master Adam HSU, my deepest appreciation for you leatting us know the practical applications of the Tai-Ji in its basic forms. As a retired instructor I have also learned the difference between form, which are to help students learn the underlying principles of movements along lines, circles, angles and levels. Then , as you properly pointed out comes the usage where those principles have to be put together and pointing out timing n timing that is essential in concentrating your knowledege in order to survive an attack, or even to win in a physical confrontation. This is what makes a good teacher and let me wish good health and good students. All the best, Paul,67, retired instructor of Karate.

Can't help but post a second comment, after reading many others in here. It is indeed a very insightful and comprehensive demonstration, not just of the forms themselves and how they translate into fluid, elegant, effective martial art techniques, but also a demonstration of how these forms are not deprived of subtle meanings, in a clear evidence of how rich chinese traditional teachings such as martial arts can be and how intellectual and spiritual they are in their only apparent mechanical emptiness. The saying that "chinese like to stay with their enemies" is just one of those small jewels of thought that to me clearly demonstrate it. Thanks again.

Master Hsu is the classmate of my teachers. I met him in California, where he taught in the Golden Gate Park Panhandle. He was so pleasant, the same way he comes across in this video. He pushes the other guy, but then keeps him from falling too hard. Great information in this lesson!

Thank you for this jewel of a video. Very, very interesting and enlightening. I have a keen recent interest in learning about Tai Chi and the health benefits it delivers, amongst other. Learning that Tai Chi is - from what I understand from the video - a sort of hidden, slow-motion coreography of martial arts forms that can have a practical usage makes it even more interesting and, of course, challenging, both intellectually, philosophically and ethically. It would seem these are disciplines not just for the body but above all for the mind and the soul and which require infinite studying and practicing. Thank you very much for sharing such and interesting lesson, all the more interesting by the tangible explanations of master Adam Hsu. You've gained a new subscriber. Stay well and continue posting interesting materials such as this.

Bravo!!!! This is the first master talking frankly, that these are martial arts and require knowledge of combat application. Reminds me of my master, Master Bong Chan. Interested in seeing more of his videos.

@Nikolaij Brouiller Agreed. But why then is there so little if any actual combat footage from internal practitioners. Even this video is cooperative with students. Obviously I don't expect Master Hsu to be fighting at his age, but his students? So hard to find internal players to spar with: ruclips.net/video/NpEQHBZERm0/видео.html
