Seriously. I'd be consignment shopping so fast... Sounds like they already put a lot of money into just getting ready though. If they had an awkward, anxiety, broke girl pageant, I'd probably do pretty well.
As a little girl (12) who has done numerous pageants since i was 6, I do think pageants need to be more positive with body positivity and need to ask better questions instead of “what’s some Insecurities you have” they should ask “what defines beauty for you?” Just my opinion Thanks for all the likes!
the part about walking in heels "this is a skill I'm suppose to know as a woman. and im embarrassed that i dont" I'm a man, and that honestly broke my heart
Learning to walk in heels is a steep curve. And painful. But women are expected to know how to wear them. It’s hard to go to dressy events and wear something that’s not heels and still look mature
I believe you can wear anything you want, men can wear pink, crossdress, women can wear whatever they want, heck I can't last in heels for one minute. It's 2020, we all need to wake up, LGBTQ, Straights, People of color, white people, disabled people, abused people, anyone should be treated the same, and instead of sending death threaths we can try to educate those who don't agree. We are all powerful, and we shall all take pride and stand, not just as people, but as a community. We. Are. The. People. Of. Earth. :D
Considering how many different types of heels exist, I personnally think that every woman who has normally shaped heels can find a shape that she likes. Not being able to walk in really high heels is no problem when you realise that there are also kitten heels and intermediate heels.
I don't appreciate y'all painting Trump in a bad light like Buzzfeed though. You have the right to your opinion of course but you're better than that. Come on.
Baby Blue, well I'm glad you agree with some of what he's doing as President! And to be honest I don't think he's made the best moral decisions in the past. He actually used to be a Democrat too! He's changed a lot! But in reality all he needs to do for America is he a good President. We didn't elect a pastor. We elected our leader. An nd he's doing a marvellous job! But let's just take a moment to look at the type of person you are. You call our president extremely mean names, and most of what you called him are just not true! You most likely got that information from a fake news source. So you are an immature name caller, a person who doesn't check their facts and gets mislead, and you don't seem to think for yourself. You just do what everyone else is doing and be living how terrible he is. You might be an amazing leader too, but as a person you aren't the best right now.
YES! her videos are unique and new. She puts so much work into them, but people like safiya nygard (I still love) get more famous for posting the same "I dress like..."

It really hit me hard when she was talking about walking in heels, how it's a skill that women are supposed to have and that shes embarrassed that she doesnt. Thats how I used to feel for the longest time!
Thank you for doing this. I started doing pageants at age 7 and retired at 25. I regret nothing. Pageants taught me discipline, community engagement, public speaking, and how to represent myself in a positive way.
Yes im a dance teacher and a costume designer so im familiar with them 🙂☝️ I even got to judge talent in a little recreational paegent near my studio. I think they're awesome when you let the kids make the artistic choices 👏👏😭 sure there was the usual singing and dancing but One of my favorite acts was a kid who brought her dog and showed us all of the tricks she trained him to do. It was cute and so funny. There was also a little girl who did stand up 😂💀🤷♂️ I wasn't ready for that lol. You could always tell when the child had thought of their talent act vs. When an adult did lol
@@lilirodriguez8851 Well technically Disney™ didn't let her train with them either because of their strict guidelines and all but she found a way around that... I think it'd be interesting to see what she does and how she pulls it off givin the talent she has in figuring out ways to get around things like that to show the viewers a type of guideline that the CIA would have to follow to get in, it wouldn't be revealing their secrets so much to train to be one because many people train to be one and never make it so I think that would be ok for her to do!🤷
I watched this video with a friend and we where totally intrigued and loving all your dedication and the quality of your videos can’t wait for part 2 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I think of it less as literal “beauty” perfection and more of how one person can train themselves to be the most successfully well rounded in a lot of areas - fitness, social interaction/grace, some sort of talent/hobby, putting effort into your appearance/cleanliness, etc
During the ‘20’s, when beauty pageants where first started, it was considered a feminist statement to participate. Society was coming out of the Victorian/Edwardian era where women were expected to be demure and quiet. They were not supposed to seek attention, show off their bodies, or speak their minds. To enter a pageant ,then, was bucking that mindset. However, as society changed to see these things as normal, acceptable, and even expected the pageants were no longer an example of women empowering themselves and are viewed as outdated and opposing feminism. The thing is, feminism is supposed to be about women being able to be and do whatever they want without hinderances based on gender. That means it should be just as acceptable for a woman to be in a pageant if she chooses to be as it is for her to join the military or be CEO of a large cooperation.
I wondered if anybody else was going to comment on that, lol. Just underscores that the Miss USA system isn't abashed that it's only looking for beauty.
I literally paused the video just to see if anyone commented on this. Really shocked me but I guess it just helps further her research about the behind the scenes and inner workings of pageants.
Yeah that was so funny, but saying "and the rest" is not correct because only one of the girls asked her, you don't know if all the other ones don't know either.
You should train like an Olympic swimmer. It's a very underestimated sport, and requires strength from every muscle in your body. I think you would do an amazing job with this, and would be very surprised to see what swimmers do. :)
I compete in Miss America and Miss USA.... I REALLY appreciate this video!!!! I have raised over $20,000 for non profits and volunteered over 4,500 hours of community service hours. I have also gained over $5,000 in scholarships from Miss America. Pageants have given me so much confidence, and I wouldn’t be a senior in college at NINETEEN if it wasn’t for these programs.
samantharosee _xx that is absolutely amazing,i hope you have more successes in your life ahead and you keep making all these changes that you are so passionate about 😃
As a female who has struggled with weight, and height, and seeing other women my age looking amazing and being small and tall. This video helped me. It showed that not everyone has the "perfect body" and no one is perfect to society. I saw another video showing how the social standard changed. It changes almost every 10 years. First people want a butt no boobs, then boobs no butt, then a thicker girl, then a smaller girl, and then they want boobs and butt. Social standards change ALL the time. You aren't the problem the world is. ❤
damn michelle. i’ve always known beauty pageants are very controversial and my idea of it was always leaning toward sexism, but i mean...you are KILLING IT. you work so hard for these things and motivate me to get up and start working. to get up and start loving myself for myself, not for validation. this cliffhanger is killing me, but i’m super excited for the next part. YOU GO GIRL!!
I felt this to be very balanced. Very well done. Also, don't be embarrassed that your femininity isn't defined by your skill in heels, or other trappings. Your femininity is in your ideals and power.
When photographing a former beauty queen at the studio I asked her for tips when wearing heels. In her warm Texas tone she said "My Mama taught me to vacuum in my heels! You take baby steps and get used to wearing them, shifting your weight in them" Funny thing is I tried it and it works! Now I can walk in 8 inch heels like they are bunny slippers!
Wow this is the first and longest video I've been able to sit through in a while without losing interest or skipping any parts. Honestly I love your hard work for this channel and the rawness, not steering it. towards a specific opinion but showing both sides. I really appreciate that.
This is the first video I’ve watched in this series but based on your intro you are definitely missing something. Pageants are SO empowering. The girls are so supportive of each other, it’s not all about looks, it’s about your personality, you ambitions, your intelligence, class, etc. I competed in the miss NJ teen USA pageant and it did wonders for my self confidence.
lets stop with this slander. it takes discipline, education, consistent effort, science, technology, creativity, at the least to look your best. whats the difference between perfecting a cat eye and shooting a ball in a hoop? is one more important than the other? bth require skill
An Acquaintance of mine, Tara Teng, entered and won Miss. Canada several years ago. She didn't do it because she wanted to win a beauty pageant. She entered because she was heart broken about human trafficking in Canada and wanted to change what was happening. No one knew what was happening, most people were oblivious to it. So she saw the pageant as a platform to voice the problem and create change. In the year that followed her title major changes started making way in Canada for human trafficking in prostitution, to protect and help victims, and create harsher punishments to those of are responsible. And the changes are still coming. She was the voice that made the first wave.
Thats awesome! Id like to know her name aswell. What just makes me sad is that anyone could make these changes, but not anyonr could compete for a competition like that..
Marisol Calvo Hair and boobs *should* move because it looks more "natural". (Think "Baywatch") It's more "feminine". Sometimes you even want to shake out a couple front pieces of your hair so it looks more flowing. Boobs for effect. Boom. Only $4,000 worth of clothing, beauty treatments, gym, training, make up, and hair extensions, to look super "natural". ;-)
many buzzfeed employees actually came from Ivy League colleges, can't say much about the executives tho, considering they're the ones filtering their contents
Isn’t Dartmouth in England..........or is that Dartmoor? I’m from England so sorry if I’m wrong, is there a Manchester in America because there’s a New England, New York and I think a Birmingham....
I always feel so educated after videos like this. Everyone always disses these kinds of pageants, when in reality, these kinds of competitions can supply someone with strength and confidence. It also gives people a voice and a platform. But I am really happy that you gave us the dark side of pageants. Thank you, Michelle Khare.
The problem I have with it is that theyre supposed to be a rolemodel but then the trainer says nothing can even jiggle (which is almost impossible, bodies jiggle!) and a contestant needs to be able to walk on heels and be pretty. I understand nailing something like that feels awesome, but I feel like it shows that some girls arent good enough for this and thats BS.
As a kid I loved watching pageants but I never thought I could compete cause Im only 5 2, so it made me weirdly emotional to see Michelle, also 5 2, absolutely killing it?
I would say the truth is somewhere in the middle. There are positives & negatives. I’m loving this series! I’m sure different people experience different things.
Your marine video was in my recommended. I'm so happy it was your videos are so good an unlike what most RUclipsrs are doing. This is awesome you deserve so many more subscribers. An I know you will get there your content is amazing.
I do a pageant called NAM (national american miss) it’s different, it’s not a beauty pageant, u get judged on 4 things 1-community service 2-personal introduction 3-interviews 4- formal wear. (you get judged on the confidence that you walk not the look) the girls are so nice and so many people that look so different have won (ex- latinex, plus sized, very skinny, African American, Indian, Vietnamese are some i’ve seen) makeup is not allowed or tall heels and neither is swimsuits. they make it very clear that it is not a beauty pageant and u can even look on the judging rubric and see none of it has to do with looks, it all centers sound confidence
I think we need to stop defining Feminism based on heels, skirts, hair etc. I find Sophia Vergara empowering in heels and a skirt...on the contrary I find Ellen DeGeneres empowering in flats and vests. I do casual and dressy girly....neither of those looks define me as a HUMAN.
I am a pageant enthusiast and I clicked on this video, and I was wondering how is this woman not a Miss USA winner?! She is sooooo intelligent. And even though this is just a challenge, you could tell she really gave her all! New subscriber here PS. I just knew after watching this video that I'd be addicted to her and her videos!!! 😍
Here's the thing about pageants. If pageants were truly empowering, about public speaking, and public good, then there would be no age caps on who's eligible, women with kids would be able to compete, older women would be able to compete, Fiona with the glasses and a mole on her face would be able to compete. To say that is empowering, to filter out women from scholarships and charity work simply for the way that she looks is not a good message to send to our kids. This is not me saying that people that participate in pageants are dumb or that pageants didn't give them a positive experience. But if we look at the net affect pageants have on women(the majority of women), I can say definitively it leaves a negative mark.
Here's the thing about competition. THERE ARE CRITERIA YOU HAVE TO MEET IN ORDER TO JOIN! Would you allow a kid in a wheelchair to join the NBA? How about a 4ft, 90lb man join the NFL? Seems to me people like you are only bitter that you don't qualify, so therefore whatever contest you're not qualified in is obviously sexist, misogynistic, ageist, et al. Lastly, it's not the contest's job to teach your kids what's right and wrong. It's YOUR job as a parent. Don't pass on your responsibilities and insecurities to others.
Sorry 'It's Britney Bisch', but that is kind of a backwards comment. "kid in a wheelchair to join the NBA", that child would be physically unable to compete against 6ft men whereas a woman with a few extra pounds or a mole on her face is not unable to walk down a runway in a gown or do charity work and social events.
@@TheCreativeZombie I agree. Especially with the whole kids thing and older women thing. Women can be pageant material and still have kids or be older. That has nothing to do with the competition (saying it's not a teen or child pageant in the way of age). Also, you shouldn't punish women for wanting to have kids or *gasp* growing older or having moles! It's just too superficial to be a completely positive influence.
M like she said, about the subject of the person age, height, weight, and relationship status. It could be because the winner travels a lot, they go to different events that requires the winner to do certain activities, like standing for long periods of times, or even being a host to a event. there are times where they have to stay out late for interviews or other things that they are involved in. I’m Not saying that girls over a certain age are to old to join, because i agree with that part about anyone should be able to join, it shouldn’t matter how old they are or if they are in a relationship but a lot of the times she is going to be traveling, and having a family at home might effect her duties as the winner. And it might result to her losing the crown. When you win a crown the judges aren’t looking at your face, they are listening to your answer. Which is most important.
Just so you know Michelle. I think it is so freaking awesome that you can be confident and happy without makeup or heals and you actually really inspired me to do sports that I find interesting and having fun without caring about how I look. I hope you know that you don't have to do all of that beauty stuff. I personally LOVED the "training like...". I hate that People always want to "fit in". I liked this video but please do not think that you have to wear makeup for a video or something. Love you❤️ Emma
Michelle, your content and the quality of the production is superb. I CAN’T WAIT FOR THE NEXT VIDEO! Love, love, love what you are showing, it is truly eye-opening and inspiring! Xx
Amanecer Sánchez Galeano major shoutout to my team for helping me make this awesome!! Garrett kennell directed, Janelle DeChancie produced, and Silas Orteza edited :)
I think, people who judge pageants kind of dismiss the hard work all these women invest in preparation and their lifestyles in general. No one becomes fit, confident, accomplished, well-kept, etc. overnight. Even this video required a high level of determination and intentionality! These are things to be admired and celebrated in anyone! There are strong ethics and values motivating people to compete. Instead of seeing the judging as negative, I think it’s helpful to see the pageantry in general as a celebration of all the things these women are collectively, and then one becomes a favorite and an ambassador to represent them all. Win or lose, it’s not like they go home without the value they came with. These are high value individuals highlighting their skills, networking, and ambitiously making gains within their communities.
sis pageants empower and embrace women through their femininity which threatens the patriarchy. when pageants fans are mostly women and gay men, how are they objectifying women? people who criticize pageants criticize femininity
There’s nothing wrong for wanting to get a makeover or take care of yourself. Just as long as you do it for yourself and not for others. Sometimes a person can just want to exceed at something, if they choose beauty pageants, it’s their choice.
What? A 35 minute video?! We're so lucky! I can't wait until Sunday! Thank you so much for these wonderfully produced and executed videos. It's a treat to watch! xoxo

It is just that when you are in front of so many people, it kind of gets hard to think. I feel that girl did a great job especially considering all the pressure.
thewarriorinred I’ve done pageants and your very right. It’s seriously hard to think under all the pressure. Your performing, trying to hold your poise, while trying to remember a million things, and then having to answer questions, some you may not be prepared for, it takes a lot of practice and the ability to respond to your nerves to do your best.
I'm only a young teenager and I'm already 5'9. Watching this really gave me confidence in my upcoming auditions in school. I can be confident just like you and embracing myself and height! Thanks for being awesome.
27% Body Fat to 15% in less than 60 days, that's AMAZING! This whole video was great. I really like how you were open minded and took two perspectives throughout your journey. Also, shout out to everyone in your video. It was great hearing their points of views.
I prefer Michelle's natural beauty over pageants make-up enchanced look any day. Still, this is interesting test and I like to see what it needs to be a pageant. It's really not easy. Waiting for the part 2 :) ps. Wow, 35 minutes. Its longer than most tv show episodes :)
You shouldn't be embarrassed for not knowing/being used to wearing high heels. Your not the only one who has never worn (high) heels. I'm so glad I came to this channel, you're such a great person!!!🤩😍💞
I just wanted to put out my personal opinion as a pageant girl myself. I have competed multiple times in my state's pageant for the Miss USA/Miss Universe system, and my experience has never been anything short of incredible. It's so easy to judge when you're on the outside looking in, but the minute you step into the experience your whole viewpoint changes. Yes, there is a swimsuit and evening gown portion of the competition, but what many don't realize is that the judges are scoring you on your grace and confidence, not what you look like. I have seen girls from so many different walks of life win awards and titles. I am not your stereotypical pageant girl by any means. I'm not skinny, I'm not blonde, I wear glasses, I could go on and on. And that's something that I've openly spoken about in my interviews with the judges (which, by the way, is really the most important part of the competition) and I have won awards in my pageants. 99% of the girls I've ever competed with are incredibly smart, ambitious, and wonderful, and many of them became my best friends. Deciding to do pageants was on the most empowering things I've ever done because it pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped skyrocket my confidence. Moral of the story is, don't knock it until you try it, things aren't always what they seem to be on the surface.
alicat7749 completely agree!! I have only done two pageants and my first one I aced the interview but wasn’t that great on stage. And then won. My second one I was so nervous I bombed the interview but was amazing on stage. And I didn’t even get into the top 10.
Exactly! People have these myths are stereotypes in their heads and they don't realize that your personality is the most important part of the process! Because honestly once we're on stage we're all just girls in gowns and swimsuits, they need to know that you have morals and ambitions and charm that makes you worthy of being a titleholder! So glad you feel the same way, always exciting to meet another pageant sister
I've never personally won, but I've only competed twice. The first year I was competing the winner was a beautiful petite black woman in college for baking and the second year it was was a beautiful tall white woman who works in marketing, both of which I became very good friends with and they're both absolutely incredible. Pageants are much more diverse than people realize
@@alicat7749 that sounds wonderful. By the ways, this is gonna sound sudden but ti refer to humans, it is, "both of whom", not, "which". : D soz not trynna sound snotty I just wanted to clarify this But yeah pageants sound cool to me when you explain how it really is.
This was so awesome, Michelle. It blows my mind that you don’t have more subscribers. You have such interesting, positive content & I’m always excited to see what challenges you’ll take on next.
I love how you really explored the implications of the industry and the struggle of stereotypical femininity which i think a lot of people struggle with.
You delivered more than what I expected for this video! It’s amazing what you do and how you put yourself out there and give your all. Your content is AMAZING. It’s inspiring and I can’t wait for part 2! You do the research, get interviews, and immerse yourself into it for a LONG period of time. Some people may immerse themselves for a few hours, a day, or max of a week. You go into it for the long haul, out of your comfort zone, and deliver.
WHY did nobody discuss the fact that miss Beverly Hills doesn't know how to pronounce Dartmouth? Like it's some unknown college in the middle of nowhere. btw, LOVED the video!
You’ve gained me as a follower and you’ve truly inspired me. You as a person are strong and functional. I can’t believe what you do day to day, the struggle and the hardship to show us what it’s like to be in others shoes. Your amazing.
As someone who competes in pageants VERY similar to these pageants, let me tell you what it’s all about. -The pageants aren’t focused on outer beauty, the whole idea of dressing up in a pretty dress or a bikini (which the swim suit section has been taken out) is to show that you have enough self esteem to be able to strut out there and be confident. Because these girls are almost always mentors to younger girls, we have to be confident in ourselves, before we can encourage other girls to be confident in themselves. -this video is a bit outdated, but pageants have gotten much better at including different body types, and different races, I am Chinese, and ive never seen any Chinese person hold a title, but not many East Asians compete in the state’s so, someone has to be the first one right? It teaches your to be a leader, and to set new standards more inclusive ones, that inspire other girls, older and younger. -the majority of your score is not how “good you look” in a fancy dress, (even tho we have already established, that’s it’s about self esteem and confidence, not beauty) in fact the majority of your score goes to your private interview, where you can finally display how intelligent you are, and how much research you have done on your platform (or the thing in your community you want to improve) it allows girls to show their intelligence, which because of the sexist world we live in, we don’t get that opportunity very much. -pageant queen must live a HEALTHY not, “skinny lifestyle” but a healthy life style, which is what we should all shoot for in general, health is no joke. And since these girls are meant to be good role models, meaning we need to live a healthy lifestyle. -what the media shows you is just the bikinis and catty girls. People don’t understand the work that goes behind it. Not just the physical training, but also doing work (that you are not paid to do, you not paid at all in this) in your community. And yes before you ask me, catty girls have definitely slipped though the cracks of pageantry, but that with almost every kind of community, I’ve had cattier girls in my church than in pageantry. -in general, pageantry (if you get the right kind of pageantry) can be a great way for a girl to get a scholarship, display her intelligence on current issues, and will be great if you wanna do really any kind of job, because being able to to something this huge, is such an honor and takes such courage.
Everyone's talking about Dartmouth but I've never heard of it before. Is it really that impressive? I'm English and the only Dartmouth I've heard of is the town in Devonshire.
I did pageants in my home country because I was appointed by my teachers. I declined because I never saw myself as a pageant queen but when I gave it a try, it actually made me feel empowered in a way (I only joined 4 pageants and we never had to wear swimsuits).

I felt it too, I feel like I’m really trying to get in touch with my feminine side.

I think they're awesome when you let the kids make the artistic choices 👏👏😭 sure there was the usual singing and dancing but
One of my favorite acts was a kid who brought her dog and showed us all of the tricks she trained him to do. It was cute and so funny.
There was also a little girl who did stand up 😂💀🤷♂️ I wasn't ready for that lol. You could always tell when the child had thought of their talent act vs. When an adult did lol
I really want to see a “I trained like a CIA agent for 60 days”
this would be interesting to see
Lucy Hughes The CIA wouldn’t let you do that since it’s very serious and secretive

They did that on buzzfeed. Except for like a week.

I think of it less as literal “beauty” perfection and more of how one person can train themselves to be the most successfully well rounded in a lot of areas - fitness, social interaction/grace, some sort of talent/hobby, putting effort into your appearance/cleanliness, etc
exactly and unapologetically too.
Strongly agree
Yes.😊
Tina W thank you, why is this such a hard concept for people to understand
Tina W Best reply ever!
I love this comment!

And, several women choose to do both - have a business, be in the military or be a lawyer AND compete in pageants!

I had never cringed so hard! glad they kept that part in lol

Does anyone else find it interesting that their names are Gretchen and Regina?

I felt this to be very balanced. Very well done. Also, don't be embarrassed that your femininity isn't defined by your skill in heels, or other trappings. Your femininity is in your ideals and power.
When photographing a former beauty queen at the studio I asked her for tips when wearing heels. In her warm Texas tone she said "My Mama taught me to vacuum in my heels! You take baby steps and get used to wearing them, shifting your weight in them" Funny thing is I tried it and it works! Now I can walk in 8 inch heels like they are bunny slippers!

This is a RUclips video we should be giving positive comments not comments about politics.

I love that she always tells us her thoughts/insecurities/triumphs/shortfalls. It is so important.

PandaSnot 17 Totally agree! It gives us two sides of the same coin when it comes to thinking about pageants!
5 feet and 2 inches?
I would say the truth is somewhere in the middle. There are positives & negatives. I’m loving this series! I’m sure different people experience different things.

Ok but Steve is basically the male version of your fairy godmother tbh
That red dress on you was amazing!
I do a pageant called NAM (national american miss) it’s different, it’s not a beauty pageant, u get judged on 4 things
1-community service
2-personal introduction
3-interviews
4- formal wear. (you get judged on the confidence that you walk not the look)
the girls are so nice and so many people that look so different have won (ex- latinex, plus sized, very skinny, African American, Indian, Vietnamese are some i’ve seen)
makeup is not allowed or tall heels and neither is swimsuits. they make it very clear that it is not a beauty pageant and u can even look on the judging rubric and see none of it has to do with looks, it all centers sound confidence
Darcy L exactly!

PS.
They also would give them more than 20 seconds to answer political questions, most of which the whole freaking government doesn't have an answer for.
It's a treat to watch! xoxo

thewarriorinred I’ve done pageants and your very right. It’s seriously hard to think under all the pressure.
: D soz not trynna sound snotty I just wanted to clarify this
But yeah pageants sound cool to me when you explain how it really is.

-in general, pageantry (if you get the right kind of pageantry) can be a great way for a girl to get a scholarship, display her intelligence on current issues, and will be great if you wanna do really any kind of job, because being able to to something this huge, is such an honor and takes such courage.
girl you went to dartmouth?! that’s impressive!
Everyone's talking about Dartmouth but I've never heard of it before. Is it really that impressive?
I'm English and the only Dartmouth I've heard of is the town in Devonshire.
it’s an ivy league school, meaning about a 10% acceptance rate!
@@kamrynscott4634 Ah right. Thanks for letting me know.
Think Russell group or prestigious universities in the U.K.
Durham, UCL, Oxbridge, Imperial, Manchester

I did pageants in my home country because I was appointed by my teachers. I declined because I never saw myself as a pageant queen but when I gave it a try, it actually made me feel empowered in a way (I only joined 4 pageants and we never had to wear swimsuits).
