My mother bought me this game for a Gameboy Advamce I'm sure she lied about when she said my childhood church donated to her. I was poor growung up, but my mom never gave up on her work to make sure I was happy. If only I underdtood your actions back then, mother.
I remember playing this game when I was maybe eight and loving the soundtrack but never being able to stay alive long enough to hear it. I think I never made it past stage 3, but every time I passed stage 2 I got so happy because I knew I would get to hear my favorite song in the game, if only for a little while.
This brings back way too many memories, god I miss this game. Stage 3 boss was my favourite song. The metal contraption you fight in the earths atmosphere
I was blown away when I first saw screenshots of this game on EGM prior to the GBA's launch in '01. I think people have forgotten how much of a technological quantum leap the GBA was for handheld consoles, which had been stuck on 8-Bit graphics since the late '80's.
@@napkin60 The tunnel-type backgrounds are the same idea as Cube Quest and other LaserDisc arcade games: a 16-frame sequence of graphics repeating over and over. The GBC could have done much of this if there were enough space on the cartridge.
@@DamianYerrick idk about that. Yeah, the game is basically the Sonic 2 bonus stage over and over, but didn't this game use the Raylight 3d Engine? There's still a lot that the GBC couldn't pull off without a VT03 style add-on chip
This was the first video game I ever owned. I still remember picking it out at the store when I was 6. My mom asked me if I was sure this was the one I wanted because we could only get one game. I said yes and I’m so happy that I did. So many memories from watching this game played again. Too bad I could never get past level 5 as a kid😂
Stage 3 boss blew my mind when i first played this gem. Also the soundtrack intro to that boss was so damn legit, besides mmbn this was one of the greatest shooters on the platform, and besides fzero gp, and fzero climax no soundtrack compares on the gba
Awesome, upbeat soundtrack! Shin'en does a really good job with their soundtracks with their games as well for other developers such as Vicarious Visions, WayForward, etc.
The FMV backgrounds are lame and you cant tell what weapon color your getting until its 3 feet away from you (bullcrap) The enemies are too small and you cant tell what they are but the final level is damn good
Damn, they should totally remake this game and it's sequel and bundle them in one collection on the 3DS, who agrees with me? Solid gameplay to boot. Great stuff.
The technology and basis of this game comes from the Tunnel Sequences in the Amiga Game Stardust which used a looped animation background to look like 3D
My friend had this game and let me borrow it to play on my DS. (the original first one) and I enjoyed I ended up ordering the 2nd one online and it came at night and I played it on my way to school.
Not surprising to learn this game was made by former Amiga demosceners. The tunnels use the same techniques as Stardust/Super Stardust and the boss stages are very obviously influenced by the reactors in Uridium 2 (possibly the title of the game as well?)
@NIGMAnsider they are working on a 3ds sequel my friend, in fact it'll be out in a month or two, its called nano assault which is a sequel to iridion, iridion 2, nanostray, nanostray2 and now nano assault
My GOD HOW was this possible on the gameboy advance? It looks like a PS1 game in some places. Even Looks like there’s bloom lighting in the windows of the first level @2:28. I know there isn’t but the artists who develop this game or we’re amazingly talented
The reactor core stage is the reason I know that Nanostray partly remade this. The main menu of the first one, it has different colors of the same technological design.
@georgemargaris Well, it really sounds like Chris Hülsbeck but the composer of this game is Manfred Linzner (pink of abyss)! So in the end it´s still an Amiga artist. ;-) Great music btw. and an incredible sound quality. Iridion II is even better than Iridion 3D!
Omg I've been looking for this game for months but could not remember the name. When I was 6 I got a Gameboy and this was the first game I got. I remember loving it until I got to the level with the clouds cause I couldn't beat it. I ended up trading it to a friend for Legacy of Goku 1.
The GBA supports Full Motion Video and pre-rendered graphics, so you can have some pretty good looking games on here. Not to mention the scaling and rotation abilities of this, and it also seems to have the Mode 7 effects capabilities of the SNES. While the hardware isn't quite designed for 3D, well, you could use software to render 3D visuals on the GBA, but the framerate would be pretty slow (like with Super FX chip games on the SNES.)
This actually isnt that technically impressive. The BG is actually a huge looped sprite. This technique was first used by capcom, mostly in the VS series and power battle/power fighters. This way they saved space since youre not wasting memory on a bunch of tiles. Still looks good though!
I found this game very hard. I could barely make it past the first level, and forget about the second. Looks and sounds great, but some of the enemies are small and dark, especially on the regular gb.
This game was the best. The music is what made the game so memorable. It was so much fun to play when I was a little kid.
Thats quite amazing for something with a 1MB graphics card and a 16 MHZ ARM7 processor
Old channel Graphics card?
Yeah, these prerendered animations are great.
Nikku4211 yup so mostly impressed how they managed to fit all on the cart.
It has 32 bit
This was made by the same guys who made Jett Rocket and FAST Racing on WiiWare (limited to 40MB!!!!).
My mother bought me this game for a Gameboy Advamce I'm sure she lied about when she said my childhood church donated to her. I was poor growung up, but my mom never gave up on her work to make sure I was happy. If only I underdtood your actions back then, mother.
God bless your Mother
❤️👏🏻

To me this was a treasure and playing this was the best
on the option menu you can hear all the track's music test
This brings back way too many memories, god I miss this game. Stage 3 boss was my favourite song. The metal contraption you fight in the earths atmosphere
@@zerog8369 Thanks captain retrospect
The sunrise scene in Stage 3 was one of the greatest graphical moments seen on GBA.

well it was a big cheat, as all the best fx are.
My jaw hit the floor when I found out this game was for the GBA. These graphics are beyond amazing for the console it's on.

I love it. Sounds like Europe in the 80s!
The Stage 2 music is kickass.
Amaroqdricaldari I know I always love the stage 2 and the asteroid belt level.
Stage 6 is a banger!
I ALWAYS loved the soundtrack in this. I remember how frustrating this game would be : /
456isuperduper456 The graphics are using full motion video, how do I know, notice the sprites pop out.
A forgotten gem.
holy shit! nostalgic af! remember playing this 15 years ago on xmas day! Finally found it after years of remembering
me too😭
7:55 this game got some seriously good music on this stage!
Stage 3 boss blew my mind when i first played this gem. Also the soundtrack intro to that boss was so damn legit, besides mmbn this was one of the greatest shooters on the platform, and besides fzero gp, and fzero climax no soundtrack compares on the gba
Awesome game! Had this when I was younger and it was a pain at first but then eventually mastered it. :)
Awesome, upbeat soundtrack! Shin'en does a really good job with their soundtracks with their games as well for other developers such as Vicarious Visions, WayForward, etc.
Dog this was the first game I ever owned for my DS!! I just found it again and I am losing my mind!
Man do I miss this game
This is amazing that the Game Boy Advance was able to do all this. Too bad other developers couldn't take advantage of the hardware like this.
@vidworx I figured - the music certainly did have a C64/Amigaish feel to it!
IVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR THIS FOR SO LONG
Dang, this game was my childhood ;w;
If you didn't play it on actual hardware at the time, you can't understand how amazing this game looked.
The FMV backgrounds are lame and you cant tell what weapon color your getting until its 3 feet away from you (bullcrap)
The enemies are too small and you cant tell what they are but the final level is damn good
I still have this game
This was the first GBA game I had ever played like 18 years ago.
This game was so fucking fun
Good old Days.

Isn't it weird that the menu theme sounds like it came from the Transformers movie ost? The autobots/decepticons battle theme?
Gameboy Advance baby !!! 💪👍😉😂
Not surprising to learn this game was made by former Amiga demosceners. The tunnels use the same techniques as Stardust/Super Stardust and the boss stages are very obviously influenced by the reactors in Uridium 2 (possibly the title of the game as well?)
this game was so hard, music was crazy though!
Thanks for the upload. This is one of my fav GBA Games back then. I love the soundtrack, one of the best for GBA.
This game is from the same studio that make FAST RACING NEO for Wii U.
Nice graphics always.
Raiken Zero Well done... Also, what's with the caps?
Oh man. I never got passed the fourth stage. It's been too long since I've played this game.
Gotta love these tunes!
This game is amazing! What a discovery and plan for the weekend 👍🏻
this is so totally worth the search thanx cubex man you rock this game is beautiful
Some games still used the 8 bit sound chip from the Original Gameboy in GBA mode though which sounds the same as NES.
however its enhanced
compared to gb it has 2xPWM/DMA, better wavetable and more noise pitches
it feels like a mix of gb with famicom but premium
Awesome! Looks like a cross between Soulstar and Burning Force with PS1 quality sprite graphics.
Unlocked a core memory, wow!
@NIGMAnsider they are working on a 3ds sequel my friend, in fact it'll be out in a month or two, its called nano assault which is a sequel to iridion, iridion 2, nanostray, nanostray2 and now nano assault
When I played Starfox Assault and Starfox 64, I'm always reminded of the final boss of this game.
the soundtrack of this game is awesome!!! it resemble to me a demoscene c64/amiga style
Shin'en was formed by a demogroup! they were formed by members of AbysS
And that was my first out of a lot of experiences developed by Shin'en Multimedia.
I just found my game last night and a whole bunch of gameboy color & sp games from the early to mid 00’s
God I miss this game. I lost it some time ago and haven't found it since then. :(
Honestly someone please tell me that this video game doesn't look like an early Sony PS1, Sega Saturn title ?!

Remembers me of Galaxy Force.
Some great camera trickery in this game
The reactor core stage is the reason I know that Nanostray partly remade this. The main menu of the first one, it has different colors of the same technological design.
The main frame, too. Because just like them, the final boss is double sided.
Ah, memories. The first Gameboy Advance game I ever bought.
Finally found this gem!
@georgemargaris

oh! Shin'en was behind this game! :0 that explains the quality

It looks, sounds and probably plays like an Amiga tech demo.

I loved this game so much growing up, but never passed stage 1 😩
i loved Iridion II it had a great soundtrack and excellent gameplay... i dunno why Iridion reminds me so much of thunder force IV
When I play this on the Game Boy, it's hard to tell how close the projectiles are to see if they'll hit you
Nice graphics! 😎👍
Best game of stars ships from my life!
memories 1st grade wen i got it...
Pro gameplay. You had it mastered better than I ever did XD
This is for game boy advancw.
i always die on the final boss every time i play this game
As a child age 6 or 7 me and my brother furthest achieved only stage 4 smh
Never made it through lvl 6. actually! Great game *_*
Damn shinen back at it again pushing Nintendo consoles to limits
Wow this is like Neo Geo Style graphics, very impressive for the GBA
8-bit is pretty much NES sound. This is GBA, it was capable of MUCH higher quality music than the original NES.
This looks great for gba, music is brilliant to,I'm getting this
nanostray's final boss looks a lot like mainframe, is it him as well?
Classic game I was 5th grade playing this stage 2 slapped too hard 😂😂😂😂😂
I miss this game and I wish I still had a way to play it
You can download a Game boy advance emulator and download a ROM of the game and that's it, you can play
This actually isnt that technically impressive. The BG is actually a huge looped sprite. This technique was first used by capcom, mostly in the VS series and power battle/power fighters.

18:33 Clearly inspired by Galaxy Force .
@georgemargaris
Manfred also worked on "Tales from heaven". Check out the title screen music!

45:48 memories 😢
is this soundtrack considered 8-bit?
... Why does the game start in a disposal tunnel, anyway?
That's how I passed that game like 20 times!
Games like this also make me wonder why there was no starfox port on the GBA
Actually games like star x was literally starfox on advanced
anyway you can get the soundtrack?
I haven't played this game in years
My childhood 😍😍😍
Like like the successor to Star Fox!
In Nanostray final boss is same thing!
I found this game very hard. I could barely make it past the first level, and forget about the second. Looks and sounds great, but some of the enemies are small and dark, especially on the regular gb.
Shin'en should seriously do updates of Iridion and Iridion II for the 3DS.
My first GBA game! :)
I FOUND IT. UNLOCKED MEMORIES
I think this game could be a decent casual shoot em' ups....
omg that looks awesome for the gba
240p !?
Jonathan Mazzini Yeah, that's a higher resolution than the GBA displays.
It took me a while to beat this game
