TEST: Footstep sounds HAVE CHANGED - Important info on audible range! - PUBG

- I don't know exactly when this changed, but I started noticing something different when Vikendi came out.

If you have a suspicion about certain situations where footstep sounds behave in a strange/incorrect/inconsistent way, let me know and I might investigate further. Be as SPECIFIC as possible - if I can't replicate the "bug/situation" then I can't document it.
Also remember that whenever you give feedback to PUBG about bugs/errors - if you have data/documentation/clips the bugs are MUCH more likely to get fixed quickly!
Cya in the snow bois! =D
Is this with hrtf on or off?
is it normal that you are louder indoors? In 0:43 as the footsteps was about to be inaudible, it became significantly louder when reaching the steps of the building and even more louder when going inside.
Lord Wacky Jacky! As some of us few talked a few weeks back on discord LOL, the name actually goes honestly man. YOU ARE AMAZING, SPECTACULAR, PUBG WONDER OF THE WORLD, FANTABULOUS, I AM OUTTA WORDS MY FRIEND! These amazing videos/content you produce, it helps alot of us new players aka nubs aka noobs aka rookies haaa... thanks for all you do, I know it is not an easy job cuz ive been thinking of makin a channel but i only play pubg mobile... I really wish there was someone like you on PUBGM who would give out all these minute details for the masses... heck there was one, RED aka RED GAMING or so it was known, not anymore cuz of European shitty crappy laws, the Article 31 i think... Hes by far the best dude ive met on the game (pubgmobile) sadly he is gone... If anyone agree pls give my comment a like... thanks... makes me feel good ;)
You should do a video on sound setup. Ie hardware etc
Wacky would u want to test jumping sounds, also when jumping down from a house + the sounds u make when u go from prone to crouch and such? Would be awesome!
I get scared by hearing my own footstep sometimes.
same, i just run around and always hear a footstep that doesn't sounds like mine ( like a offset step )
@@Kurai0 I have this weird bug sometimes when jumping out of the plane since Vikendi release, I see other players running in the air with loud running footsteps. Also agree with the odd footstep than comes from the side instead of directly below you.

Thats why u jump

This is the problem I have with PUBG Corp. They make changes to fundamental gameplay elements, and somehow manage to leave those out of patch notes. Thanks again for your commitment on providing us with this information Wacky!
I don't think a lot of these changes are intentional. PUBG Corp is just a terrible developer and they don't really know what they are doing.
But then how would Jacky make money?? 💰
Yeah it seems they are more concerned about god damn dance moves for fuck sale how hard is it to fix an audio problem
It is not the footsteps that have changed. It is the feet with which you walk. It is the change of the mind. A change of matter. A change of spirit.
Oh but it is so much more then a game. It is a expression. A gift.
A lifetime.
@@1903JPG oh the literature. This is beautiful, kudos to you brother.

Half of the rounds i can't hear people until i have line of sight otherwise they can run silently to me as long as i haven't seen them. also left and right is occasionally switched...but when i spectate i can hear everything perfect and pin-point an enemy from a single step... sound is just broken in this game
Yeah I got the same problem as well after Vikendi came out. I just can't hear some people anymore. Some people seems to have this bug and it's game breaking really.
Same
@Opanic i think this bug has been for long time, but yeah, i have it too. One of the worst bugs, especially when you play FPP where sounds is even more important than in TPP
I have the same problem. I don't know about spectating but when I watch streamers, it feels like having wallhack. That's how well I can hear enemies from streams.
Check if you have 7.1 enable on you soundcard driver.
I've never been able to identify people by the sound in the game. I don't think it's ever going to change but now I have even more risk of being heard without actually hear anything myself. NICE!
Then there must something wrong with your system because although the sound is far from perfect if you have never identified ANYONE by sound then either you're exagurating or your sound setup is bad (or you play on too low of a volume)
@@martinaasandersen3775 It's my ears what's not working xD
The crouch run/walk audio is exactly why I am playing my character barefoot. When my character is moving in that way, she only makes a sound as her foot thumps the floor, but with shoes it sounds like the feet are more dragging along the floorboards/ground and while it isn't necessarily any audio level difference between barefoot and with shoes and the sound travels just as far, the sound for me as the player is much more 'pleasant' and unintrusive to when I want to listen for other movements.
Basically - shoes will make a jingle-ish sound and drag along the floorboards on wood, but barefoot only makes the footsteps audible and less background noise.
Also, on that note! Did they change audible levels for weapons as well? Me and my friend always sought out beef whenever we heard it as we played before, trying to get a piece of the pie as best we could whenever someone shot. We could hear rough distances of the gunfire and be like "Oh that's very close. Let's go there." then proceed to make our way towards it. Usually as soon as we came over small hills or mounds, we usually could see the fight. But now whenever we hear gunshots and we run towards it it feels like we can NEVER find it. Hell.. even UMP9 shots have lured us to run for hundreds of meters and never find a fight.. thinking it was just fired like just a stonesthrow away. Of course that could be the map and it's overabundance of compounds to run to.. but it just struck us as odd.
I feel you. I always run for gunshots and there's never anyone there. Wasn't always like this, especially in the super early days. You'd find enemies exactly where you think they are every time. Now it's just weird.
I know what you mean man. Everybody plays to win these days.
Thank you very much WackyJacky - making us even better players 😉
OMG O.O
Hahaha and I've been crouch walking on Vikendi like it's Splinter Cell, feeling like a 300 IQ badass.
Thanks again Jacky for an excellent analysis.
So this explains a lot of my frustration with people magically knowing where I am in towns.
Unbelievable
Idk why the footsteps are so loud to begin with. The worst offender is hearing steps while you’re in a building and the enemy is across the street in another building. Really, the sound should be muffled or not audible at all.
DayZ does this pretty well and R6S has the best inside/outside audio that’s muffled. When you’re inside, you shouldn’t be able to clearly tell where sounds are coming from outside the building and vice versa.
Have someone full blast sprint around out side of your house and see if you can hear them clearly from the middle of the house. Even with a window open or the front door, you most likely won’t be able to hear them well.
Now I’m not saying to make it 100% realistic but damn cmon now, the current sound system is way too loud in the footstep department at least.
PUBG Corp needs to officially recognize WackyJacky. This content is pure science and incredibly valuable.
Switching guns makes it sound like someone is around you walking.
I thought I was the only one who ended up getting freaked out that.
was that added in the latest patch? I thought it was always life that...
i noticed that too and id always end up looking to my right

Another epic video by WackyJacky, always helping me to become a better pubg player
He souldn't be doing this kind of vids. In 2019 footsteps for a videogame seems to be the basics...
Its pubg there's more than just audio problems. You deserve a medal for playing this game day in day out. I can't handle more than 2/3 games at a time without quitting. They have never fixed the main problems from all their updates.
So glad Jacky you've covered this. This is definitely something I have noticed but nice when you get some type of confirmation that this is an issue.
So glad you came out with this video, I was so confused on how other players were able to hear me walking from so far away.
Thank you so much! On pub G mobile. The footsteps you can’t even hear where they are. They’re just there so when you’re trying to listen to your ears and take in the information that your speakers are giving you you can’t tell where the person is because the first steps is all the way around you and the 360 sound environment. Instead of left right forward backward underneath up top
Why does PUBG keep updating these things making the game different every damn time, while ignoring the real changes they should be making... Ugh!
like what?
gotta adapt to the meta brew! this battle royale!
Like terrain impact on sound. You can hear sound from underground places like sanhook caves like they were in the open. And hills doesn't change the sound of gunshots either.
Pubg are still pubg, they only changed a little bit . Unlike fortnite that so different from season to season
like the circle speed on vikendi, the drops on vikendi (incl lvl 3 stuff).... Sanhok was better balanced
I don't even play anymore but I still watch your videos. Thanks for sharing your passion
Thanks for the test, Wacky. I first noticed something was clearly different when I lost a chicken dinner, thinking I was sneaking up on the last guy when it was obvious could clearly hear me, considering he was waiting for me to emerge to open fire. It was pretty frustrating, but I did still have a pretty good round.
Wow not just me then, i started stand walking as it seemed quieter. Also people who i thought were close just seem to disapear in the game, now i know why! Thanks Wacky
In my opinion the audible distance should be going down instead of up to encourage sneaky plays. Also WTF 60 METERS???
yeet, my bushcamping tactics just got twice as effective :D
Mayne wacky use high quality headphone to hear that far
@@Niinda94 thats not how hame sounds work. They sound plays to all headphones no matter how good or bad they are.
RIGHT! They're just encouraging more camping with this shit. Bluehole is the budget version of EA.
@@DonatasCer but on a higher quality you can hear different tones better.making sounds like walking easier to hear. it really makes a difference.
I always thought it was ridiculous to be in a house and be able to hear someone in the house next to you, let alone 2+ houses down. How do people in this universe live with neighbors?
They just kill them I suppose.
@@DOOMRUL3Z you made me lol
"And if you want to hear more, subscribe to the channel..."
I see what you did there.
Who the hell hears footsteps that far????
Not in game, in replay, sure.
The citizens of PUBG can :D
just watch cocotacos stream, sometimes he just turns around and aims at a rock 50meters away, suddenly a guy peaks it.
he has predator hearing
Apparently when my friend inspects me, they hear footsteps more clearly than I do. They often asked me why cant I hear the sound? Well I cant!
🙋♂️
Damn, I love the effort you put into improving the user experience / info about the game. thanks!
No channel in 2018 earned so many likes like yours, and you deserved every single one. And as i see you continue to earn Likes.... Great Video as always !
At least you can hear the footsteps. In Blackout you can have a group of 4 just outside your building and they don't make a peep..
You are by far the best at this Jacky. Bluehole should think about making a W. Jacky character in game for all the work you do. Lol...
Imagine having this good of hearing in real life.
Hearing someone walk in their house (or doing other stuff) nearly a football field away.
Glad they stuck to realism
If PUBG Corp isn’t paying you for this info, the should be. You’re probably saving PUBG Programmers hundreds of hours with these videos. You leave no stone unturned. Wacky Jacky always has the science to back his claims.
Very respectfully,

It's sound like Minecraft tbh
Lol I thought the same
and the grunt sounds in pubg sounds like Roblox
@@atherling5557 Hurt sound? When enemy punch/shoot you?
Indra Arbhawa idk sometimes you just hear a grunt and it sounds like roblox
Said the same on reddit and got slaughtered
thank you wacky!! i thought i was going crazy wondering how the fuck people were hearing me creep around so easily! i absolutely HATE it when these kinds of things are shifted about so much by a developer as it screws with your perception of how you can conduct your movements in game for the greatest advantage.
hope PUBG corp sees this and re-doubles their efforts to put sound design polish on a more important footing than it has been.
Yes, in PUBG mobile too. I think the foot step is bugging, but it's actually changed. Thanks for the test. 🙏🏻
Thank you i knew it was different i heard someone on a rooftop like 50 meters away and was convinced he was right next to me he looked just as confused as me when i killed him, thanks pubg
So it rewards more the ones who never move. What a nice call Blueballs.
and those with good headphones..
and those who want to play on louder sound which may potentially damage their hearing.
That explains a lot! I was wondering if something has changed, especially in some situations on Sanhok i was quite sure about it.
I didn´t know how it really worked out, but there we have it. Thanks, Wacky! Important video, it is going to change how i gonna play in the future!
WackyJacky101 I'm convinced the volume and range at which you can hear various amounts of gunfire has also changed, I've heard loud gunfire to presume it was in a nearby compound to later find it's actually the next compound along... I think they have made changes here too.
Video request: Optimal sound settings (equalizers etc) for pubg if possible :) One that focuses on footsteps.
You forgot to test jumping sounds D:
*:D
Play Me some of that jumping Sound
Thank you for the effort. I suspected that something was off, but now I know for sure.
Nice video Wacky, i think you should add the audible distance of people without shoes, jumping, ads, looking at different directions while staying in place.. you know Updated General Sound Movement..
I have been having the same issue with sound, noticed it with the Vikendi Update. I was hearing footsteps very close by and then the enemy wasn't there to find out he was quite far away. Its kinda cool tho and helpful
So I wasn’t going crazy and they did change the footsteps range. Personally it has helped me pin point enemies way better than a month ago. Still got to learn how to judge the distance of a silenced m24 tho! I always think it’s closer than it ends up being.
Yesterday, I heard someone on a roof of a building in the Military base, then decided to get inside the building because thats where I would be safe..
Turns out there were 3 people inside gg.
i noticed this but i thought it was my headphones, it's definitely been happening since 26th dec because that's when i started playing again. on that day i managed to hear a dude who was under the bridge on erangel and it surprised me since there was a good distance between us
Thanks for the info, footsteps have definitely been more confusing recently
15 meters is how it should be when they're right behind you.
I will get disappointed if this video got disliked. Appreciate your work buddy!
Every patch so many things change in the game, it's hard to get used to it.
I could understand if there were leaves or sticks on the ground; it's nigh impossible to walk through a forest quietly IRL. On flat pavement, it is ridiculous that sounds are so loud and so easily audible from a distance.
Wacky I agree that shoes and no shoes just sound different in almost every situation but PLEASE test the shoes/no shoes when crouch sneaking around. This is the one instance where I’m almost 100% positive the sound effect with shoes on is noticeably louder. I think it’s when crouch walking. When you have shoes on, crouch walking is louder than standing walk. Whereas, without shoes, they sound the same or very similar.
Edit: and I mean normal crouch moving vs holding control while standing walk.
Edit: I just realized you stated this in the video that standing walk is quieter than crouch walking. HOWEVER, you’re only testing with shoes. Try it without. I promise its different.
I feel like this is for ALL sound atm. I constantly hear vehicles and run over a cliff ready to spray only to find them like 200m away or I hear gunshots and think there has to be people in this compound only for them to be in the next one over. Weird thing to mistake after thousands of hours played, but if you say its only footsteps I guess I'm going crazy.
i got rekt by this change lately lol...when u think ur far enough to be quiet but infact ur enemies is waiting for u to peak out and surprise you instead
I just dropped into Vikendi and the footsteps sound completely different - muffled and the volume is about half what it used to be. so I did a quick search to see if something had changed in the last two days.
Since the vikendi update, some of my friends and I, are having troubles hearing footsteps even very close to us, across all maps.
I will not here others players' footsteps until I am 5-8m from them.
But it seems sound is fine in spectator mode, but not while playing
So yeah we can't hear footsteps at all up until people are 5m away
Except for people walking indoors, where we hear them clearly as before
I noticed this on Xbox with the snow map. We only have it in the test server at the moment but I just figured that’s what it was and on the update when it’s officially on the game they would fix it. More specifically, when I snuck up to a house it sounded like a dog was running around inside and I was like DAYUM MAN that’s a lot louder then it used to be! You could still hit it with a grenade over hand but underhand no way.
i have heard that the footstep sound box is cylindrical. so as long as the person is walking within the horizontal that you can hear them, you can be at any height and still hear them
When I really sit down and think of this change to the audible distance, I'm peeved with the sounds of inside to outside and visa versa because it sounds like the walls aren't even there, but at the same time the sounds of outside to outside seem pretty realistic in terms of how far away you can hear in a similar environment. Bluehole really needs to figure out how to make that inside to outside and visa versa sound like it actually has to go through a wall instead of just changing the sound files used.
Best thing is the airplane...sounds like it’s exactly above you, but you don’t see shit when you look up
dang that is a huge difference, looks like im gonna have to change my play style a little
This is much better and before i couldn't even hear the guy sneaking up on me its good now imo
Standing walk making less noice than crouch walk makes good sense. Being able to hear runners 60+ m away ... not so much.
Maybe a topic about audio settings would be in place? I have my effects higher than master, and heard better than my partner in duo, and when he set up similarly he noticed he hears so much better now than before.
Sounds like you’re walking on stones with sand or pebbles. Also audible footsteps at 60m is too much it seems.
Game is a joke rn ..
Wow wackyJacky thank you for this been do my head in thought they were louder
Bluehole never disappoints
As a noobies pubg enthusiast, Really love wickyjacky tips & trick
Ohh ma boi Jacky, Excelent Job! The question is....Did they test it out like Jacky? I don´t think so, not even close.
Excellent video. That crouch walking is a lot more noisy than stand walking has been the case for a long time and I find it super annoying and counter-intuitive. It does depend on the surface that you are walking on, though.
Me : *hears steps
My Brain : *ffffffuuuuucccckkkk
Enemy : *50 metres away , huh no one here , okay
Enemy : *stops
My Brain : *shuts down
Me : *fires a full round of m249 to the air
Enemy : huh thats weird , *snipes me
I've noticed that a crouch step (while in building) is making much more noise (for me in headphones) than a normal stand walk step wich can even dont make a soun if step was really tiny. but a few such tiny steps and you can look out of your cover unheared. that's the trick)
Def something up with the sound, people just seem to disappear sound wise then re appear .. think as you said before left right switch..but its worse...also think people are coming from the left and they appear on the right... sound for upstairs and downstairs and getting a sound like people are walking outside when they are inside so makes it seem they have come through a door...I have people just appear out of no where without a sound so its inconsistent. also could be my headphones!
Great video! So to sum up, it's pointless sneaking around anymore which makes the game more of a shooter than a survival game. I always knew the no shoes thing was a myth
From your results it seems to me, that the values are randomized for every player. Some month ago I got hit by a huge nerf on audible distance. I could hear people running outside around 100m away. Now i can not hear them >25m away from and that did not change with the latest patch.
Another great material. Good job Wacky. You're the best :)
This explains so much. I've been so confused as of late.
Hey man thank you for giving us this useful informations ! 😊😀😁😇😢
So many times I had issues with non existant foostep sounds from people very close to me, it even happened once with a buggy that tried to roadkill me, it wasn't making any sound…

I knew something was up. Ive always bragged that the audio was pretty good in pubg. But lately ive been having some issues
Excellent job wacky. No one thought of such bugs. ❤️
Yes finally I got my true answer that stand walking is quieter then crouch walking
Standing sprint: 1:16 Standing run: 1:28 Standing walk: 1:42 Crouched sprint: 1:56 Crouched run: 2:11 Crouched walk 2:19 Prone Crawl: 2:38 Slow Prone Crawl 2:57
Compare all of the sounds when close to you.
Standing walk seems to the best if you know somebody is close to you already... and crouched run seems to be the best for distant stealth and mobility BUT not good if somebody is close by.
Glad I'm not able to hear vehicles 200m from me anymore

I still think there is a massive discrepancy between game vs replay. Just yesterday I had someone crouch walking and stand walking with ZERO audible at 3 meters. Yet on replay they are really loud.Combine that with invisible player bug and bullets going through motionless people sometimes up close, its getting ever more frustrating.
No. It's definitely the same in game. The audio is just fucked and doesn't always work.
@WackyJacky101 I have seen a bug in pubg where I am not able to hear footsteps of players when they are nearby i,e, within 10-20 meters. First I thought it might be my game issue but later when I discussed with other pubg players they also are facing the same issue. I am from India and play on SEA server.
Wacky never seems to disappoint
Amazing video, you are so good bro and your videos no lees, i get from you so many tips for this game, thank you so much!
Just like WackyJacky to pick up on such game technicalities. 😆
I noticed that walkin while standing and holding the lean button is very quiet, crouching and leaning is louder than standing which doesn't make sense. FYI
so i can put on shoes again... my character has been running around in the snow barefoot ... feels sad man*
The next question would be, is this the audio system itself that got changed in a way or just the footsteps.
I personally sometimes feel like someone is shooting right next to me while they are actually more like 100 meters away combined with what you just showed here and it could potentially be sometime within the audio generation itself.
I’ve had the opposite issue. Foot steps that sound farther away, end up being almost on top of me.
always amazing and extreamly useful videos
So yesterday I heard a player come into range somewhere between 65 and 70 meters. He was doing a mixture of sprint, vault, and jump. He promptly called me a cheater and reported on his stream. My Audio setup is a Behringer u-phoria umc22 DAC, and Audio Technica 650X headphones.
I'm actually really surprised that stand walking is more quiet than prone crawling.
Now I know my friends keeps telling me I have good ears(awareness) but I don't. I just hear enemies walking around even I lowering the volume down from my headset... I thought I was the only one hearing these steps.
