Hongshan Forest Zoo, Nanjing, China

Hongshan Zoo, also known as Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo, is a renowned zoological park located in Nanjing, the capital city of Jiangsu province, China. It is recognized as one of the best zoos in China. The zoo is known for its commitment to wildlife conservation, animal education, scientific research, cultural entertainment, and leisure. It is also recognized as both a wildlife conservation and animal education base for China and as the Wildlife Rescue Center for Jiangsu Province.
Established in 1928, Hongshan Zoo has a rich history and is one of the earliest zoos in China. In 1998, the zoo was relocated to its current location and renamed Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo. It was the first zoo in China to cease animal performances in 2011, setting an important precedent in animal welfare. In 2018, the zoo achieved another milestone by successfully introducing a pair of koalas, making it the first urban zoo in China to house these iconic Australian marsupials.
The zoo spans an expansive area of 684,000 square meters, with a diverse collection that features nearly 300 species and over 4,000 individual animals. Notable residents include white tigers from Germany, koalas from Australia, chimpanzees from South Africa, penguins from Antarctica, and a host of nationally protected species such as giant pandas, golden snub-nosed monkeys, gibbons, black leaf monkeys, red-crowned cranes, Northeast tigers, red pandas, Chinese alligators, and Yangtze alligators.
