When I moved to Sweden 9 years ago I actually swapped hometowns with my Swedish stepdaughter. She moved to England in 2010 when she was 19, made her own life there, and she's now a pub landlady! We're really proud of her :)

I moved from Vancouver to England seven years ago and have never looked back. In fact I've never been back. The move itself was apprehensive but coming from a culture that was virtually identical to here made it a lot easier. I was born in the city of New Westminster in British Columbia. The capital is Victoria. Can you get more British than that. At school assemblies we sang "God Save the Queen". Most times when I talk people say " Oh, you're an American". When I tell them I'm Canadian for some reason they then get all apologetic as if I'm offended. I thought of the move here as something Bilbo Baggins had once said.. "I'm off on an adventure".
I did the opposite move, from England to British Columbia. Initially to Vancouver but now Victoria, and I feel the same, couldn't be happier with the move.
I've worked in retail for years. Some of it in outdoors clothing so we'd get lots of tourists who hadn't appreciated the Lake District has many bodies of water here because it's a very wet place. The rule for North Americans to help a sale along was to enter into conversation with them and to never call a Canadian American, but to ask what part of Canada they were from. Call a Canadian, America, you've lost part of your sale, call and American, Canadian, they'll smile, thank you, then tell you where they are from and buy pretty much whatever you recommend.
If you are shy or socially awkward living abroad can be awesome because you instantly become interesting and people want to talk to you. I am shy and had to work in the US for six months. It was kind of fun because everyone wanted to talk to me and I didn't have to do anything to make that happen!
Every video you do, you come across as insightful and thoughtful. Depth of thought is what we don't value enough but should really value most. You're an asset to us here in the UK.

I used to be an international student and I’m in canada for almost 10 years. From halifax, to Montreal and now toronto. Experienced one time university transfer and canada give me another chance to demonstrate myself. I also visited Alberta and BC for many times and stepped almost every major towns. No matter where I will go for my next step, I’ll always remember my time and good memory in this country

English wasn't rare either but most families of English descent didn't hang on to their sense of connection to the old country like the Irish and Scots families did. We even have a living native Scots Gaelic dialect (sadly quite rare now). MacDonald is just about the most generic sounding Canadian last name possible (Smith and Chen may well be statistically more common but they don't exist in the national psyche as being as stereotypically Canadian as MacDonald/McDonald or Tremblay... or Mackenzie or Roy for that matter). It's not just English-speaking Canadians who have British roots. Most French Canadians have a dash of Irish heritage due to Irish colonists being present during both the French and later British colonial era. Religion mattered more than language back then so Irish Catholics married into French Catholic families and vice versa. Langlais/Langlois (basically the English-speaking guy) is a common last name yet it is exceedingly rare in France... it's a nickname that turned into a last name. Folks with that last name (and a few others that essentially don't exist in France) usually have a patrilineal Irish ancestor who assimilated into French Canadian society. French-speaking Frasiers were common in the area my mum came from (her stepmother was a Frasier who'd never heard English spoken in her life) so I suspect is wasn't just Irish folks who intermarried but we tend to have this national myth about two completely distinct people groups (when in reality, we've been intermarrying to some degree since the 18th century). Mixed French and British ancestry is very common in Canada (at least in any areas where both cultures had a chance to interact).

My Canadian ex wife didnt like it when she was asked where she came from all the time. This despite me telling her to use it to her advantage as Canadians are thin on the ground outside London. Canadians are well respected here in the UK ,yeah i,m not sure why either but hey ! dont knock it .
I think Canadians are respected for many reasons ... the Great War / the 2nd World War ... Canada declared war both times the same week the Crown did ... we have the Monarch on our money & as part of our cultural history ... I, a Canadian moved to England back in 1997 & people often tell me how 'nice' we Cdns are ... and softly spoken ...

I'm delighted to have found you a month or so ago and I enjoy your videos. Some of your points echo what some of my European students have said about being in England but you make it funnier. It was always interesting going to supermarkets with them because they looked at everything and showed me a lot of stuff I usually walked past. And, of course, they had to try a few things to find out what they were - just as you do. Thanks for the work you put into finding out about England and for keeping us amused and educated.
I know exactly what you mean I've seen that "Are you American?"(hostile) "No I'm Canadian" (oh, that's ok then) moment many times, then the conversation rapidly moves on to labatts vs Budweiser
Haha....I am British living in Canada, and I am coming back to UK for a visit with 2 Canadian friends, I said be ready to get caked American, a North American accent is unheard of where I strongly in the UK) but you will probanly get bought a drink when they find out your Canadian and not American. I moved from England to Canada 11years go and while it I similar to the US, the police here are usually very friendly and polite and you feel safe wherever you go
I must be one of the few Canadians that is disappointed about this sentiment. I have family and close friends in the US. I've also traveled around most of the US by motorcycle, car, and semi truck and gotten to see the real America and met many fine people. Despite our differences, we all want the same basic things out of life. We are more alike than any other two nations. I have a great sense of compassion for our neighbours and the Brits regarding the political and social diviceness both seem to be experiencing right now. A situation that I cannot be a smug Canadian about.

The same cultural similarities have been reported by 'The Buuey Tribe' (a small American family currently situated in Cambridgeshire, England). They seem like very nice people, too.
People enjoy meeting folk from different places. I worked in a Goverment office with many nationalities. Chatting with people from different backgrounds is always interesting to me.
I live in London and I've only ever met one Canadian. I might have come across a few and assumed they were Americans but even so I didn't actually meet them. I've met people from most European countries and some of the larger countries outside of Europe. Generally London has quite a large immigrant population but Canada doesn't seem well represented here.
I was a student in London in the 1960’s, found it surprisingly different from USA. I had visited in Canada many times, much closer to USA. Later I lived in Japan twice, and yes the alphabet is vastly different. In fact they have three alphabets.
Been thinking about emigrating to Norway from the UK so even though our situations aren't the same, its always nice to hear your experiences with moving. I'm a new masters graduate though so its difficult getting work in the first place.

I'm glad you've moved back closer to the sofa for the last few videos. The first one looked like you were out in the wilds and this has a more homey, comfy feel to it. You've also taught me a lot about Canadia, stuff I probably would never have known. It's nice to hear from the perspective of a foreigner. Used to work with a Canadian/American (he was Canadian moved to America) he was my Head chef at the time in a American diner in England great guy loved working with him he moved on to wales but we still keep in touch

4. I think "respect" is the right word, and I think it's warranted respect. As you said it is a big move, and it takes courage to make such a big move into (despite the similarities) the unknown, which is why it's something everyone comments on, because most of us never take such a big jump. Even better, you not only did it, but seem to have made a success of it. Big yourself up, you're worth it (as the shampoo ad says).

I moved to Markham, ON to Corby, EN 7 years ago and leaving my family was really hard I still cry to this day that I’d can’t be with my cousins, aunt uncles and grandparents. But I do visit as much as I can. People don’t know I am a dual citizen at most. But yeah.
I'm an American from just outside Chicago watching one of your videos for the first time. I understand American and Canadian English accents are similar, and the U.S. is geographically closer to Canada than you might like, if you want to feel you've made a significant move, but aren't Canada and the U.K. more similar than Canada and the U.S.? Similarities would include parliamentary government, publicly provided health care, relatively low crime rates, relatively high tax rates, and low public firearm ownership rates.
The United States and Canada are distinct countries, but they're not really _foreign_ to each other, in the same way that other countries are foreign. The cultural differences between nearby parts of each country just across the border, once you get past things like kilometers vs miles and whether there's a one-dollar bill or not, are absolutely dwarfed by the much larger differences between the various cultural extremes within each country (Minnesota vs Georgia vs California, Montreal vs Sault Ste Marie vs Yellowknife, etc.).
There is a bit of a time window when you can do exciting things before you have to settle down and save for old age etc. Travel is so mind expanding. I moved from Canada to the US but have traveled abroad. One great plus about re-settling there is the ease of traveling to the rest of Europe. I have considered moving to Portugal for retirement but it is a big leap for an older person.
You forgot all the British colonies and former colonies around the Caribbean who are closer to Canada and speak English. (Belize, Jamaica, Bermuda, Bahamas, Guyana......), some of whom even drive on the same side of the road as Canada, and are in the same time zone as Ontario. The weather seems to be better than England. Oh, what a young lady puts up with for the love of an Englishman.
Canadians drive on the right now. The only British territory I can think of with right-hand traffic is Gibraltar. However, you're not wrong. Nigeria, Vanuatu and even the US were all British at one time, and they all have right-side traffic (in theory at least!).
Hi Alanna you really need to live sometime in the north of England to see the English that Canadians and the rest of the world never get to see and hear, you will find them very different to people in the south of England.

Hi, just an observation as an American living in UK. I get the same 3 questions. 1 - Are you on holiday? Answer no I live here.. 2 - Why would you move here? Answer I love the country, a chance to travel and I don't have to learn a new language. 3 - You know it rains a lot here? Answer It snows a lot in Niagara Falls. I hate shoving snow, I don't have to shovel rain. This seems to be every ones opening salvo.
Well Allana im not upset.... I thought that was very well put and explained. I feel exactly the same ...I agree with your 5 benefits.....just in reverse, I chose Canada purely for its strong links with the UK, we even share the Queen! Plus as I often explain to people, its got everything the US has got but non of the crap... like ridiculous gun laws that the US has for example, and I find Canadians are half way between Americans and Brits humour wise and culturally....Blighty and the Great White North will always have a strong connection.
Genuine question; which do you think is easier someone from Canada moving to the UK or a Brit moving to Canada. I’m thinking more the things you did / had to do to move here (all the form filling, costs etc) or when first here ie: Bank Accounts, Insurances, Health Care, Mobile Phones, Driving, Housing, Employment etc
As an English man, ive always thought that people here have such a negative attitude towards life, they can be such stick in the muds. So its refreshing to meet people like yourself with a possitive attitude towards life. I happen to be a natively bilingual Canadian and I've heard both Brits and French folks say essentially the same thing about themselves (the French will comment that they're "râleurs"... moaners... and then comment on how cheerful French-speaking Canadians are). It appears to be a cross-Channel self-criticism. The silliest thing is that most Canadians tend to view complaining as their own national sport too. Maybe it's a rather universal self-perception among people who have it pretty good.

From my perspective I have to say that I respect and admire you for having the courage to tackle the life changing experience of moving to a totally different culture. Your confidence in the presentation of your videos proves that you have mastered the difference.
I'm delighted to have found you a month or so ago and I enjoy your videos. Some of your points echo what some of my European students have said about being in England but you make it funnier. It was always interesting going to supermarkets with them because they looked at everything and showed me a lot of stuff I usually walked past. And, of course, they had to try a few things to find out what they were - just as you do. Thanks for the work you put into finding out about England and for keeping us amused and educated.

I know exactly what you mean I've seen that "Are you American?"(hostile) "No I'm Canadian" (oh, that's ok then) moment many times, then the conversation rapidly moves on to labatts vs Budweiser

Haha....I am British living in Canada, and I am coming back to UK for a visit with 2 Canadian friends, I said be ready to get caked American, a North American accent is unheard of where I strongly in the UK) but you will probanly get bought a drink when they find out your Canadian and not American. Lol
@@user-daviddog Have you thought about moving to Canada? I love the US but I wouldn't live there with a health system that only helps if you can afford it. I moved from England to Canada 11years go and while it I similar to the US, the police here are usually very friendly and polite and you feel safe wherever you go
I must be one of the few Canadians that is disappointed about this sentiment. I have family and close friends in the US. I've also traveled around most of the US by motorcycle, car, and semi truck and gotten to see the real America and met many fine people. Despite our differences, we all want the same basic things out of life. We are more alike than any other two nations. I have a great sense of compassion for our neighbours and the Brits regarding the political and social diviceness both seem to be experiencing right now. A situation that I cannot be a smug Canadian about.

Steve Gould Oh yeah, they sure do look sharp dont they, those pointy metal couch/sofa feet, I'm sure they are pretty blunt though as far as actually cutting through the carpet, but definitely looks like they may leave some heavy indentations

Hope you have fun! I went to Toronto about 15 years ago and was asked if I spoke English. I'm a Geordie who really doesn't even have that strong an accent haha.
The same cultural similarities have been reported by 'The Buuey Tribe' (a small American family currently situated in Cambridgeshire, England). They seem like very nice people, too.
People enjoy meeting folk from different places. I worked in a Goverment office with many nationalities. Chatting with people from different backgrounds is always interesting to me.

I live in London and I've only ever met one Canadian. I might have come across a few and assumed they were Americans but even so I didn't actually meet them. I've met people from most European countries and some of the larger countries outside of Europe. Generally London has quite a large immigrant population but Canada doesn't seem well represented here.

I was a student in London in the 1960’s, found it surprisingly different from USA. I had visited in Canada many times, much closer to USA. Later I lived in Japan twice, and yes the alphabet is vastly different. In fact they have three alphabets.

Been thinking about emigrating to Norway from the UK so even though our situations aren't the same, its always nice to hear your experiences with moving. I'm a new masters graduate though so its difficult getting work in the first place.

My bff lives in London as well as some family and other friends that I have made while visiting. I have always dreamt of moving to London and my plan was always to go there after finishing nursing school.That idea is actually what pushed me through the program and somehow, I just gave up on it but it recently came up in my mind again and I think I’m actually gonna do it🤞 . I'm glad you've moved back closer to the sofa for the last few videos. The first one looked like you were out in the wilds and this has a more homey, comfy feel to it. You've also taught me a lot about Canadia, stuff I probably would never have known. It's nice to hear from the perspective of a foreigner. Although, you've been here a while now, so I guess you can't really be called a foreigner at this point. You're one of us, one of us, one of us.... :-)
Used to work with a Canadian/American (he was Canadian moved to America) he was my Head chef at the time in a American diner in England great guy loved working with him he moved on to wales but we still keep in touch

4. I think "respect" is the right word, and I think it's warranted respect. As you said it is a big move, and it takes courage to make such a big move into (despite the similarities) the unknown, which is why it's something everyone comments on, because most of us never take such a big jump. Even better, you not only did it, but seem to have made a success of it. Big yourself up, you're worth it (as the shampoo ad says).

I moved to Markham, ON to Corby, EN 7 years ago and leaving my family was really hard I still cry to this day that I’d can’t be with my cousins, aunt uncles and grandparents. But I do visit as much as I can. People don’t know I am a dual citizen at most. But yeah.
I'm an American from just outside Chicago watching one of your videos for the first time. I understand American and Canadian English accents are similar, and the U.S. is geographically closer to Canada than you might like, if you want to feel you've made a significant move, but aren't Canada and the U.K. more similar than Canada and the U.S.? Similarities would include parliamentary government, publicly provided health care, relatively low crime rates, relatively high tax rates, and low public firearm ownership rates.
We have Tim Horton's in Manchester and scotland. Why are there none in the south of england? Maybe it's too warm.....

The United States and Canada are distinct countries, but they're not really _foreign_ to each other, in the same way that other countries are foreign. The cultural differences between nearby parts of each country just across the border, once you get past things like kilometers vs miles and whether there's a one-dollar bill or not, are absolutely dwarfed by the much larger differences between the various cultural extremes within each country (Minnesota vs Georgia vs California, Montreal vs Sault Ste Marie vs Yellowknife, etc.).

There is a bit of a time window when you can do exciting things before you have to settle down and save for old age etc. Travel is so mind expanding. I moved from Canada to the US but have traveled abroad. One great plus about re-settling there is the ease of traveling to the rest of Europe. I have considered moving to Portugal for retirement but it is a big leap for an older person.
You forgot all the British colonies and former colonies around the Caribbean who are closer to Canada and speak English. (Belize, Jamaica, Bermuda, Bahamas, Guyana......), some of whom even drive on the same side of the road as Canada, and are in the same time zone as Ontario. The weather seems to be better than England. Oh, what a young lady puts up with for the love of an Englishman.
Canadians drive on the right now. The only British territory I can think of with right-hand traffic is Gibraltar.
However, you're not wrong. Nigeria, Vanuatu and even the US were all British at one time, and they all have right-side traffic (in theory at least!).

Katharine Isabelle is my favourite actress and she's Canadian and is also the undisputed queen of horror movies. I have a region free dvd player because some of her movies are not available to buy in the UK. So I buy them from Canada or America. It costs more what with shipping but I'm such a fan i have to own the dvds
Hi, just an observation as an American living in UK. I get the same 3 questions. 1 - Are you on holiday? Answer no I live here.. 2 - Why would you move here? Answer I love the country, a chance to travel and I don't have to learn a new language. 3 - You know it rains a lot here? Answer It snows a lot in Niagara Falls. I hate shoving snow, I don't have to shovel rain. This seems to be every ones opening salvo.

Well Allana im not upset.... I thought that was very well put and explained. I feel exactly the same ...I agree with your 5 benefits.....just in reverse, I chose Canada purely for its strong links with the UK, we even share the Queen! Plus as I often explain to people, its got everything the US has got but non of the crap... like ridiculous gun laws that the US has for example, and I find Canadians are half way between Americans and Brits humour wise and culturally....Blighty and the Great White North will always have a strong connection.
Genuine question; which do you think is easier someone from Canada moving to the UK or a Brit moving to Canada. I’m thinking more the things you did / had to do to move here (all the form filling, costs etc) or when first here ie: Bank Accounts, Insurances, Health Care, Mobile Phones, Driving, Housing, Employment etc

As an English man, ive always thought that people here have such a negative attitude towards life, they can be such stick in the muds.
So its refreshing to meet people like yourself with a possitive attitude towards life.
Dont get me wrong, i love my Queen and country, its just that i feel that most dont realise, how lucky we are, compared to so many other countries.

I happen to be a natively bilingual Canadian and I've heard both Brits and French folks say essentially the same thing about themselves (the French will comment that they're "râleurs"... moaners... and then comment on how cheerful French-speaking Canadians are). It appears to be a cross-Channel self-criticism.
The silliest thing is that most Canadians tend to view complaining as their own national sport too. Maybe it's a rather universal self-perception among people who have it pretty good.
