A few things that you may want to consider. If you are an independent business owner and you use your car for business purposes you can also write 100% of the car within the next 4 years since it is a zero emissions vehicle. So you can actually write off approx 15K of your income per year for the next 4 years. Assuming you make at least 60K/ year this would drop your income significantly. You wouldn't have to pay 20% tax on 15K of income which equals to about $3000 per year which equals to tax savings of about 250/ month for 4 years. Not sure if this would apply to you but for a lot of people out there this would be a really good business purchase. Talk to your accountant about this if you use a car for business. Great video though it seems like its a great purchase for you guys!! I was trying to decide who's referral code to use for my order since there are so many of them out there and I think you deserve the extra KMs! Very flawed calculations... Why 6 years for one and 8 years for another? Also why take out transit, if you kept corolla then the transit will also be 0 due to covid. 340 per month on gas is insane.... 50 km each day only amounts to 350 km per week. Even increase it to 500, that amounts to only 2000 km per month... I love tesla no doubt and want to get one but this is not a fair comparison

Thanks for going over these numbers. What pushed it to the Tesak for you is that you drive 3 to 4000km per month. That is very high and most people do not even get remotely close that that. Also, the transit numbers in for the Corolla and not for the Tesla skews it also, but then you took it out for the 10-year example.
Remember you have to change the battery after a certain amount of time then it will be a nightmare . Any damaged part will cost you thousand of dollars, add that too . This not even a fair comparison.
Real good video buddy. You just figured out how Legacy auto works. They make money on maintenance and parts instead of making something that last long. I'm looking forward from going 97 diesel truck to the Cybertruck in Canada.
Thank you so much for this video. Planning to get my tesla model 3 soon. Your video gave a lot of good information. And of course i did shared the video to my parents to convince them lol. Again thank you.
I am looking at this too, I also drive about 100km pre day. My problem is the after warranty cost! Tesla only give you 4 years and 80,000KM of warranty, and I check the extended warranty is like 8K more. Which is not worth it. Sure, I love all the electronics in the car, my issues is after warranty is done; what is my cost of repair. I saw lot of RUclips video how people spend thousands of dollars just to fix a door handle! Currently own a 2013 Honda Accord that I bought new in 2013. Till this day, I haven't have much issues with the car. It is the after warranty cost that I am worry about. And with all the talk of new battery technology (Solid State Batteries) coming out that can eventually double or triple your range in a few years; I pretty sure your Tesla resale value is down to nothing by 7 or 8 years.
At the end of the day you’re buying a luxury car.. bmw Audi Mercedes etc are all high in repair cost if you get an oil change from them it can be up to 250 dollars , can’t really compare the repair cost to a Honda or Toyota, and as for the resale value when I bought the car my goal was too keep it till it dies. Just like your Honda let’s say my tesla doesn’t give me any issues then there’s no problem. It’s always a risk you take when buying a car. All I can do is drive properly ,take care of it and don’t crash lol but for now it’s my workhorse taking from point A-B without touching a gas station and my electric rates dropped to 8cents this month so even better!
@@AndreBhagwandat Well, good luck with your Tesla. I saw lot of video on people complaining quality issues. Like panels doesn't line up and stuff. Did you get any of this problems? As for me I plan to drive my Accord at less another 3 years... Then I will see where the technology goes. I know by then many manufacture like Toyota will have EV with Solid State Battery.. I see what happen then.

Go test drive one and then try a Prius and let me know which one you like more lol honestly they make a better car in my opinion, autopilot, longer range, and they have a crazy CEO that’s not afraid of the changing the way we look at the car industry
1) Why would you keep the transit cost on Corolla 2) wear and tear of Tesla will be way higher than Corolla past year 4 - long term reliability of Tesla is at the bottom of the pack below a bmw- ju st the giant iPad costs $1800 plus tax 3) full service costs $475 plus tax on Tesla, go figure I’m not a Tesla hater but you can’t beat a Corolla, at-least not just yet
Damn 57,000 CAD is really cheap for what you're getting. In my country a standard range + costs 75,000 CAD. I'm pulling my hair when I hear how cheap a model 3 is in North America.
Nice, I live in Florida and I'm planning to get a model 3 standard range plus but I'm waiting for the supposedly newer model 3s that are coming with chrome delete included and wireless charging included. Got close to about 10k saved, hoping that the newer model 3s arrive before the holidays.
This was very helpful thanks, I currently have newer cars that I’m financing but I did the same comparison and found it very helpful. I also added tires to maintenance costs since that is a big thing for me, usually near the $1,000 mark which is like 10-12 oil changes. EV car tires can wear much quicker due to torque off the line which is much higher in EV than ICE vehicles. Also, EV cars can be up to 1 metric ton heavier than ICE cars. In my situation I didn’t find the Tesla to be cheaper yet, but I’m also interested in the long range due to trips I normally do where charging is going to be an issue. It’s definitely something to consider in the future though. A couple points, even though EVs do not seem to need any maintenance, annual maintenance is recommended, and when I added those costs up with the increased number of tire replacements my current car maintenance is cheaper. Basically what I’ve read is that tires are going at about 30,000km instead of about 45,000km or better. I’ve read different things online for this, manufacturers are developing airless tires plus there are some that increase the PSI to get better results. Either way, something to watch for and it could impact EV range and maintenance costs. If you end up with lower maintenance costs, reduced energy costs and zero emissions it’s a big win for everyone though
I'd be interested to see a comparison between a tesla and a corolla hybrid...gas fees should be about half (less $170/mth = $2,040/yr), so that should knock off $16,320 over the 8 years...
I actually did these numbers yesterday. Tesla 3 is 25k, 3 insurance is about $40 more month, 3 300 range is 1/4 less than Corolla. Within 5 years it’s about the same cost but you would pay 20k more for the Tesla. If you plan on keeping the car longer than 5 years you probably will be spending alot to replace Tesla parts I think money savings you are better off getting a Corolla. Tires are cheaper and I really think long term maintenance will be cheaper. Tesla are great but I’d say I’d you want to save real money buy a volt by Chevy
how come you're using transit fee for corolla but removed it for tesla? It's not like you will have to stop using the transit once you got the tesla. This math seems so wrong...
The base 2009 Model S cost $65,000 and had a range of 160 miles. 2021 base Model S cost $72,000 and has a range of 412 miles. If we compare at equal cost, thats a 57% increase in range for the same $65000 (not counting inflation). The importance of this is this: EV's improve rapidly, so previous iterations lose resale value dramatically and it will only get worse. The cost of ownership is negligible. After ridesharing becomes mainstream, or around 2030, THAT will be the time to invest in EV's. By then, range will again double and the cost will have balanced out to match current priced ICE's. Dont spend $60,000 on a car unless you have the extra cash for EV infrastructure to speed up your ROI.
Unfair comparison 1) The transit isn't solely a cost from owning a corolla. If you had only a tesla you'd still have that cost. 2) insurance on a 60k car is going to be at least double insurance on a 30k car. That number is total horseshit. 3) maintenance isn't fair. You have to include a total brake job at the 6-8 year mark depending on how you drive. New tires, summer and winter. 3.1) the only place that can do maintenance on a tesla is a tesla "dealership". The Toyota can be maintained at a small garage for a quarter of the price for labor. 4) 6 years vs 8 years gives a totally unfair advantage the tesla. You have to recalculate the numbers if car payments had to be made in a 6 year period. Payments would be 20% more expensive off the bat. Also, goodluck finding aftermarket parts for the tesla. I love tesla, but your comparison is pretty much worthless...
@@JesusIsLord7773 watch rich rebuilds yt channel and you'll see what I'm talking about. Tesla is anti right to repair and that's great for shareholders but really bad and unnecessarily expensive for consumers
I agree with you. Adding transit in one and the difference in years make the calculation confusing. There’s no way insurance is cheaper. Every friend that got a Tesla had a premium increase. This is a car double the price and if there’s any damage it will cost thousands of dollars to fix. The tires wear out so much faster because of the weight of the batteries. A Corolla is a gas car but we all know it’s extremely low on maintenance. If you use this calculation to trick your wife to get a Tesla all good for u but this is not a fair comparison.
I have to comment here bud. I was actually watching your window film vid. BTW it's exactly what I need. And noticed you look a lot like a close friend of mine. He's half Jamaican and half chinese. Dr. G that’s so crazy Lol He could be a cousin, my family is so mixed up jk thanks for watching it, yea the film is pretty good for the price let me know what you think
You forgot to mention one important thing, how about the resale value! The Tesla model 3 will have a much higher resale value as well if you decide to sell it which means you will get more money back
This is absolutely not true. The only reason Teslas retain value JUST a hair above the rest, is brand value, however the pure nature of EV's and the rapid movement of the industry literally bets against resale at the highest level. Nobody will want to buy a $60,000 used Tesla for anything close to that, not even half -- if the new 2024 Tesla drives twice the distance, charges twice as fast, and self drives twice as good. ICE vehicles at least retain value because gas hasnt really gotten much more efficient, however battery tech is polar opposite as time goes on, especially within the next couple years. Before you go against my claim, look at used car sales but more importantly, the length of their ad posting. Most overvalued posts dont budge, and you will see a clear drop up to 60%. That is absolute trash just after a YEAR of ownership.
@@FrotLopOfficial I'm not going against anything you said here, but you should look at subaru resale value. They're the highest on the market right now. When I was looking to buy one a few years back, it was basically buy a used 10 year old wrx for 25-30k, or spend a few more grand and get a brand new one. It's crazy how well they retain their value. I ended up buying a brand new 2018 wrx off the lot for 35k back in 2017, and subaru offered to buy it back off me just a few months back for 30k as trade in value. I'm not too sure how tesla resale value is, but I'm holding on to my subaru strictly for this reason alone. However, I might add a tesla to my garage here pretty soon.
I'm not thinking you are mechanically inclined. Still rely on oil to produce electricity therefore I will stick with Corolla until they allow hydrogen in the US

because we saved on travel we don't take any public transit anymore, I still added it in at the end. If we just ran the corolla like how we do the Tesla it would cost more with the kms we use each week
It’s about 2500 down to place an order, fully refundable and I believe when you work out your financing options you can leave it on the car payments or take it back before you start your monthly payments
Your video made sense to me and the calculations. Similar situation - I moved to Whitby, now Oshawa North. I drive about 116km per day for work (thankfully I'm WFH ight now). Haha, funny enough that my fiance has a hard time convincing me that we should get it. I'm having second thoughts now. Gas alone is about 450 for both of us with two separate cars and maintenance. Hope this is not brutal for winters and the Tesla will last for at least 10 years.
For me the lease doesn’t make sense because it only goes up to 25k km per year, my tesla right now is 8 months old and at 28k, I definitely think it’s more reasonable to finance, you own the car! Unless you want to upgrade every so often, leasing is about 5k down and $520 per month for 4 year term so within that term you’d pay $29k thats a lot for basically renting... in my 4 year mark to compare I’d spend around $35k I would definitely own it and you wouldn’t have to worry about leasing conditions like km overages and other nonsense
Maintenance of your corolla is too high. As well, tires on corolla are 4-5 times cheaper than on Tesla. Due to heavy weight, on Tesla you have to change the tires twice often than on corolla. I own 2021 Tesla model 3 Standard for 3 months now. And I own 2021 Corolla LE. Same situation as yours. I agree, that electricity is cheaper than gas. However, driving Corolla interstate is more convenient that Tesla. Driving Tesla in the city on my busy business days is sometimes frustrating as I come back home with 5% of battery 😂.
I'm still not sure why you included transit since it's independent of what vehicle you own. I would say though, if you really want a Model 3, it's not as unaffordable as people think
@@funpoleece how so? We payed for public transit ... when we had to Corolla lol then with the tesla I decided to just drive her to work and because of the pandemic.
@@AndreBhagwandat I get that you were paying $200 when you owned the Corolla, but why would you keep the $200 in when you extrapolated the ownership of the Corolla vs the Tesla for the next 8 years? Are you saying if you own a Corolla you would have continued to use transit for the next 8 years?
Insurance is not a scam.. it’s based on actuarial science and data. It is also a heavily regulated industry. Unfortunately, its only convenient when people like you need it most.
Tesla Maintenance: Battery degrades and needs replacement around 150K miles ($13k-$20k), Suspension, Wheels, Tires, Door Handles, leaks in headliner, front suspension replacement, Brake caliphers, Charge port not opening, MCU and display panel replacement??? I've read that Insurance is much higher for a Tesla because body repairs are more expensive. Wait until the Government realizes that EVs are not paying "road tax" as done with Gasoline. Cost of wiring a 220vac home charging station. Check out some other videos like this: ruclips.net/video/_OBxDDa8J14/видео.html
If you watched it... I took out the transit cost because when we bought the tesla we decided to stop taking transit therefor driving more. Then at the end I removed the transit cost from the Corolla total just to compare.
I was questioning this as well, but now it makes sense. He was using Transit with the Corolla because it was cheaper than driving him and his wife to work (more driving = more on gas), which he now does with the Tesla because of the savings of electricity being cheaper than gas.
...then I continued the video and you he said $100 extra for gas when you take out transit. *Scratches head again* Why wasn't this taken into consideration pre-Tesla? That extra $100 could have been saved for a downpayment on it, reducing the interest.
@@trevoreff4906 at the end I took out the transit cost, so now I’m saying we’re gonna drive the Corolla to work and back for two people, so it’s an extra 100$ because we’re using the car only. All of the tesla breakdown is the current plan . I drive my wife to work I come home I drive myself to work I pick her up on the way back. With the Corolla before...I drove her to the train station, so less driving but there’s a transit cost. Now with the electric car it made more sense to stop transit all together and just run the tesla all day.
@@AndreBhagwandat I get that. I'm saying if the cost of driving is cheaper by $100 (with the Corolla), wouldn't it have made sense to drive her to work? It's crazy what you guys have to go through to get to work in the GTA. I visit the area often, I don't know how you guys do the two hours of extra driving per day. Elon is solving some pretty big problems in the world. With everyone telecommuting to work, and the advent of Starlink, we're going to see a lot of people moving to rural areas of Canada. Those that stick to the big cities will be saving money by commuting in Tesla vehicles.
Welllll… in the area I live I guess it’s much more expensive to own a Tesla. I did comps on my current car (2007 Toyota Corolla that I paid $7000 for) insurance is 90 a month in so cal for me. with all insurance maintenance gas oil etc. over 5 years it’s cost is estimated at 31,680. My vehicles are babied and hardly ever need much work done. A Tesla on the other hand is 35000 (even used doesn’t seem to go down in price) the insurance per month more than makes up for any savings ($384 per month). Over 5 years it costs 62340 yikes 😱 thank you high cost insurance
im buying a tesla 3 soon too. I'm renting so i dont know how i will charge the car. I also dont konw if my landlord will let me charge it. I live in a house, share with other people.
There is one MASSIVE issue BTW, there are a lot of horror stories about Model 3's (also other Tesla Models as well) regarding electric issues. I just wouldn't trust this car at all if it were out of warranty simply because there are people having issues with this car during warranty. Also these Tesla vehicles have TERRIBLE resale value.
Damn 6 and 8 year terms is long. Sure you still own the car after 6-8 years, but Consumer Matters talked about this. 4-5 year terms are the recommended ones because you always end up paying more on longer terms, and you have to prepare for unexpected repairs/damages and unexpected life changes. Lower monthly payments seem more manageable but over the long run you're spending 100k on a 30k car and 97k on a 50k car... If people cannot afford a 4-5 year term on a car, they should not get that car. Look at total cost of the car instead of monthly payments. Think different model or think used instead of stretching out the payment. I'm afraid that people will look at this video and be encouraged to get 8 year terms...
I understand your point 100%!, look at it this way, I would never have done an 8yr term on a gas car because of the added expenses, my main goal was to have a reliable car, while maintaining a budget not another used one where a lot of cases you end up spending more in repairs. Model 3 warranty is 8yrs... If the car last 10 years yea the term was 8 but you spent the same money if not more on a Corolla in that 10 years. So I picked the car I’d enjoy while spending the same amount. Unexpected life changes can be different for everyone which makes the 8 year more risky, but don’t buy a new car in general if you can’t afford it. Regardless I’ll need a car until I retire lol so I’ll be going to get another car in decade or so I’ll always need one, the tesla maintenance is very low, it’s constantly updating, theyre finding newer ways to have longer batteries. In My opinion it’s the type of car that would last and it also has one of the highest resell values
Ronnie Lee you are forgetting a major factor... interest rates. You are only financing the initial car itself nothing else. If you are buying new anyways and are able to get a low interest rate, You should always leverage for as long as possible. Example: if i told you heres a 100K you can pay me back over a 20 year period and you only have to pay me a $1000 a year in interest. You should definitely take that deal because you can earn far more by investing that 100K. Thats why so many people invest in real estate. Because you are able to leverage money at far lower interest rates. Especially right now, Its practically free money. It is important however to be able to afford the car monthly. Because at the end of the day, cash is king. If you don’t have a fairly safe and consistent cash flow monthly its best to go with a cheaper car. Life is a game of interest rates. As long as you are smart with your money. Don’t let monthly payments or debt scare you off. Let your investments pay for your monthly expenses.
I think the part you are leaving out is resale value, not many people can live with a 3-4 year finance. You might be paying more for your car then your house or apartment. 5-year is the sweet spot, for payments, 4 years is the sweet spot for cars, that’s when you want to trade them in. Resale value on gasoline engines does not equal electric vehicle value. Think about this, after about 80,000km you would need to have both front and rear brakes done, at 120,000km you would need suspension and DIrect Injection problems kick in. After that you should have it paid off and you may have other engine repairs on top of everything else. Electric uses regenerative braking, the motor slows down the car, not just the brakes, so those brake pads last a lot longer, tires should be about the same. The 8-year warranty on the battery is something to watch for, but so far Tesla owners are only losing about 10% of range after roughly 250,000 miles (400,000 km). It’s hard to find Tesla’s on the road, even harder to find used ones for sale, even Models 3’s are starting at $45,000+ CDN so we’ll see if that price goes down or not. They seem to be reselling for 80% of their original price, gas engines drop to 75% as soon as they are driven off the lot. I just checked my SUV, which I bought for $50K CDN, almost 3 years ago now, it’s worth $24K CDN Max. So Electric is going to be a lot more valuable as a trade-in. Likely you are getting a battery with 90% of it’s original range.
nice way to justify buying a tesla lol. $245/month insurance for a corolla is insane. I guess it depends on the drivers experience that are insured. Hope you do a future video to confirm if your calculations here hold up with the tesla. I feel the maintenance cost could be very different in 6 years due to how much you guys drive it.
Lily Qu nope not assuming, we actually got the car before the pandemic so we calculated with that cost, I’m sure gas and electric will go up but it’s still worth the look to consider electric
I had the same question as Lily. Shouldn't you remove the transit costs from the Toyota (assuming you are not going to take transit any longer) and then compare?
@@AleximusJames he did lol did you watch the video? He gave all the scenarios, one thing he left out was the resale value which means you will get a lot more money back with a Tesla versus a Corolla
I like how you ad the 200$ of transit fees to the car you want to seem more expensive, this video is brutal and a waste of time, yours numbers are very flawed.
I think you should watch it again… the 200$ stays on the Corolla because it didn’t make sense to drive my wife to work with it (gas wise, oil changes) it’s taken off the tesla because we realized just driving it solely is cheaper.

As for me I plan to drive my Accord at less another 3 years... Then I will see where the technology goes. I know by then many manufacture like Toyota will have EV with Solid State Battery.. I see what happen then.

Great video fam I'm sold!
Wanted to get Tesla but I dont own a house to have a charger, need to go out to charge, how long will it takes to charge for approx 100km range?
It takes about 15-25 min for about 250km range on a supercharger
Great info...I didn't even know that point about not using the brakes....wow!
1) Why would you keep the transit cost on Corolla
2) wear and tear of Tesla will be way higher than Corolla past year 4 - long term reliability of Tesla is at the bottom of the pack below a bmw- ju st the giant iPad costs $1800 plus tax
3) full service costs $475 plus tax on Tesla, go figure
I’m not a Tesla hater but you can’t beat a Corolla, at-least not just yet
Because we still took transit with the Corolla, it didn’t make sense driving it as much as I can the Tesla. The gas was too high
Do you keep it in a garage?
Damn 57,000 CAD is really cheap for what you're getting. In my country a standard range + costs 75,000 CAD. I'm pulling my hair when I hear how cheap a model 3 is in North America.
Nice, I live in Florida and I'm planning to get a model 3 standard range plus but I'm waiting for the supposedly newer model 3s that are coming with chrome delete included and wireless charging included. Got close to about 10k saved, hoping that the newer model 3s arrive before the holidays.
Newer model is here!
You will regret buying a tesla they don't age well and will become a money pit
@@Pepsi69486 how would it become a money pit?
I have over 35000km and my tires are still fresh, I’ll be honest with all my videos I’ll let you know when they wear down
@@AndreBhagwandat oh that sounds good then
Does the Corolla drive it self?
First 10 seconds of video = auto-like. Exactly the reason I'm here.
If you plan on keeping the car longer than 5 years you probably will be spending alot to replace Tesla parts
I think money savings you are better off getting a Corolla.
I did stop, because it’s cheaper to just drive me and my wife all the way
The base 2009 Model S cost $65,000 and had a range of 160 miles.
Love this video!
Unfair comparison
1) The transit isn't solely a cost from owning a corolla.
Maybe it’s worthless to you... but like I said in the video that is my situation. Thanks for for watching 😊
Tesla does not say you can only do maintenance only at tesla. 😂
Dope video! We have a Tesla Model 3 too! It's the best car we've ever had
I know Right! Everyone needs to get on board lol
Why are you still including the transit on the Corolla?
With the tesla it's cheaper to just drive It out and eliminate transit. But If I do that with the corolla it would cost too much
Good video! I’m considering getting a Tesla also this video was helpful! Fellow Whitby guy here 😊. What is the battery like in winter?
cheap to maintain but broke down a lot? did you fix it yourself?

However, I might add a tesla to my garage here pretty soon.

how come transit 200$ became 0 with tesla? you atill have to take ttc right?
because we saved on travel we don't take any public transit anymore, I still added it in at the end. If we just ran the corolla like how we do the Tesla it would cost more with the kms we use each week
Maybe you can retrofit a heatpump since the refreshed model has one. It improves the range dramatically in the winter.
I wish... lol I think with my schedule it will all work out
You could’ve stopped at car payments, insurance and electricity. That in itself is cheaper per month.
You mentioned no downpayment for corolla on your calculation, How about tesla?how much is the downpayment?
I’ve obviously taken a gamble on the 10 years but I’ve never regretted it since the first day, especially with these crazy gas prices NOW!
if you increase the tire pressures to 40 psi your corolla will be faster and even more fuel efficient
You should also make a video on which is more reasonable to finance or lease a tesla. That would be helpful to us looking to get one!
Hey did you get full self driving or not?
No I didn't
Great video man
Maintenance of your corolla is too high.
William Chan I included transit because it’s my situation, then I removed it at the end 🤓

I don’t like model 3 because rear wheel drive. Tesla leans you to get the AWD/long range battery.
All depends on the situation I’ve no problems with mine in the winter
Insurance is not a scam.. it’s based on actuarial science and data. It is also a heavily regulated industry. Unfortunately, its only convenient when people like you need it most.

Great video! This is making my decision on purchasing a Tesla more reasonable 👍
👌 it’s awesome trust me
What a horrible comparison. He took down transit cost of 200$ from Tesla and kept it in Corolla. Lol.
Tbh on your sheet on the maintenance cost for the corolla would not be just $30.. could be 50-80$ cad
Thank you for sharing! I pay less than $100 for insurance on my VW so I am afraid I won’t like the Tesla quote 🙉
I don't agree.... you have to include your $200 transit... having an EV doesn't mean your schedules magically comes together.... CAAPPPPPP !!!!!!!!
I think you missed the part where I drive double the amount to not take the transit now because it’s much cheaper to drive with the electric car….
The 24k for transit is not related to the tesla nor the corolla
im buying a tesla 3 soon too. I'm renting so i dont know how i will charge the car. I also dont konw if my landlord will let me charge it. I live in a house, share with other people.

@@AndreBhagwandat i think i will just charge it outside. cause im always out. I dont like to be at home most of the time. Thanks
I got my tesla. It was a no brainer buy. definitely best investment of my life.
Hahaha i literally use the same exact tv as a computer monitor as you
Damn 6 and 8 year terms is long.
And the 100k-97k is the overall cost a lot of people would be spending with insurance, gas, oil change etc
Nice video. I’m always thinking about an electric car. I like the model Y. 🙂
