I think the fact that Lapras never won a battle goes well with the other fact that it was literally just a baby. It didn't lose either so that does make me happy :D
Yeah, I think Lapras' story is much different from other Pokemon as the battles aren't what mattered, it's the narrative with its family.
The fact Lapras battled Orange Island champion Drake's Gengar to a draw was impressive, despite being a very young Pokemon. And as it was shown, Drake had some strong members in his team where it wasn't a swift victory for Ash in winning the Orange Island league.
I agree that it’s lack of battle prowess was due to its young age as when it reappeared having matured during the Johto saga it was significantly stronger and was made the new leader of its heard

Honestly, Ash releasing Lapras is probably one of (if not the) biggest examples of Ash's training style in doing what's best for his pokemon rather than what would be best for his pokemon trainer career
Very true! Lapras' release (and then return as a lader) was a fantastic way to end its storyline so I'm not upset it never went to Oak's lab
Lapras is a shinning example of how Ash touches the lives of many Pokémon he catches, including those he eventually released. Lapras went from traumatized lost baby to proud leader of its family!

I remember Ash’s Lapras, it used to travel with him until released to its family. I know Lapras was separated from its herd that one time and some jerks started beating it, which caused it to have trouble trusting humans until it met Ash. And it was a pretty good battler, even though it got knocked out along with Drake’s gengar in the match. It was one of the ice types Ash used to own and then came along Glaile which is still at Oak’s lab. The time when Ash and Lapras saw each other again was the Jotho saga where it was all grown up, and long story short became the new leader of the herd after it demonstrated bravery against Team Rocket.

I majorly disagree with people who say Ash should've kept Lapis when it was never the intention to keep him in the first place.
Like Larvitar, he never intended to keep them Ash had full intention of keep the two of em and wanted to return to their mothers

Orange islands was the coolest season. I loved it as a kid, especially Ashs awesome team with both Lapras and Snorlax 😍

They need to update Lapras and bring it back. It was such an iconic Pokémon in R/B/Y and G/S/C. Plus, It was always epic seeing it on the original Pokémon intro opening.

Lapras has been my favorite since playing Red Version as a kid. The one and only time my parents bought me some Pokemon cards, after I begged relentlessly, there was a holographic Lapras. I have held on to that memory to this day.

Ash and Lapras' relationship is what I like about Brock's time with Stantler too.
One thing I like about lapras in game is the fact that it’s no longer a endangered Pokémon species

When I was younger I knew a kid that bred and released a lot of Lapras to repopulate them. You know regular kid stuff.

Wait!!! Lapras came back??? How do I not remember that???? ❤️😭 While Lapras was never meant to be a permanent member of Ash’s team, Lapras has to be one of my favorite Pokémon he ever caught. To this day, Lapras is one of my favorite water type Pokémon :)
Johto had like 200 episodes, so it's easy to miss one haha

As of Gen 7 Lapras is common as hell now.
It went from rare and practically extinct in the wild to now you get to catch them in the wild a lot now.

Ash's training style and battle style makes him the best trainer of all. Evwn pokemon creators does not give him a chance to stay with one of his pokemons other than a small pikachu. But now finally pilachu can transform into a gigantamax. I hope creators would give ash a chance to unleash his greatness

Professor Alex Silver they could’ve come up with a plot that involved them having to take a boat to see if Pokémon from poachers or just chasing team rocket in the ocean during the Sinnoh region arc or the kalos arc where at the end of the episode ashes training for the Pokémon league and him and his friends were taking a cruise before going back to their hotel rooms and lapras surprises them just saying
Despite Lapras not winning any battles it was impressive that it defeated Drake's Gengar, given Lapras didn't partake in any prior battles and Drake was the Orange Island League champion.

I was happy to see lapras again in aim to be a Pokémon master episode 7
Lapras was a big help to ash, though the bond ended in a short period of time but they made it like they knew each other for a long time. ofcourse it made ash's journey easier to travel overseas right?

I remember when I was a kid and seeing Ash & Lapras reunited in the Johto region I thought Lapras was going to rejoin Ash’s team now that it was older
It's a shame that Ash's Lapras didn't decided to return to Ash's team because it has fully grown and became stronger than before. Plus it would be cool if his Lapra could Gigantaimax because it's form is my favourite.
At least the story ended happily :)

Lapras *Did* return in a Journeys series, however it was kind of a disappointment :/
1st She's just there for some help to carry on the episode.
2nd The main focus is just a Stuck Wailmer who evolves in Wailord.
I like rewriting episodes at times so here's a plot I would change
...So after Wailord is finally freed, Ash is still in the cave and water is heavily rushing in. (instead of Lapras calling Wailord to help) Lapras rushes into the cave in a attempt to save Ash and she does manage to get Ash but the water currents are too strong, Ash tries to tell Lapras that'll she needs more help but she doesn't listen. Then suddenly a current pushes Lapras and Ash into a stone wall, injuring Lapras' fin. But still determined she manages to pull through and save Ash just in time.
I'd like to know your thoughts on this plot change :)

Ash is a better man than me. Let me tell you, I couldn't release my Pokemon the way Ash does. That Lapras would have been hard to let go and just because the Pokemon is strong, but because it is soooo cute!
I wish Larpras would have returned or at the very least, Ash caught another one. I would have been accepted Misty catching one.

lapras low key one of the most loyal pokes ever...that thing is the only reason he beat gengar lets be real
I absolutely love lapras and will forever. Such a powerful yet peaceful and gentle pokemon. My pokemon sword lapras is called Precious for this very reasons - cuz it simply is.

The Lapras herd swam away not run away, regardless Lapras was mostly a method of transportation for Ash & company to get around on the Orange Islands. And yes Lapras didn't get any wins but given Lapras was very young, it was certainly impressive Lapras was able to battle Drake's gengar to a draw. Also I would agree it wouldn't be too likely Lapras would return since the Lapras herd always travelled in the vast ocean and unless there is another chapter of the franchise where Ash is on the open sea, it isn't a strong possibility for Ash to reunite with the young Lapras he had for a short while.
I would have loved an Alola return :)

It's on my list! I have to figure out a way to cover Team Rocket's battles. Determining what counts as a win and loss (and who defeated them) is super murky for their team. I always found it weird how James never even caught weepinbell on-screen

I didn't know Ash's Lapras was an infant first when Ash met his Lapras when it look like an almost full grown Lapras.
even a baby is sill big for lapras haah
You could say it puts into perspective how a Pokemon as huge as Onix (which is 28'10" for the record) can be hatched from an egg without having a smaller pre evolution
But even the other baby Lapras are smaller than Ash's Lapras as a baby too.
