  • While in Wales I had the pleasure of spending a day with Huw in his garden. As we chatted, about self-sufficiency, creativity, and Spring Preparation, I was delighted to see that despite his years of experience and breadth of knowledge, he still gets excited about what's going on in his garden. This video highlights six things - that no matter your level of gardening experience - you can do like Huw Richards, to make your garden "A home for your heart and for your soul".
    If this is your first time watching one of my videos I'd like to take a minute for a brief introduction to who I am. After 20 years of successful careers in the Los Angeles area my family moved to rural Missouri and are taking steps to become more self-sustaining on our homestead. I break down all the farmy things into small manageable steps so you can start homesteading wherever you are.
    We homestead on 2.5 acres in the Missouri Ozarks, and our garden hardiness zone is 6B.
    Our weekly videos break down farming and gardening into small manageable steps so you can make the transition towards self sufficiency and food sustainability without being overwhelmed!
    I garden in the Missouri Ozarks and am in hardiness zone 6B.
    I'm so glad you took the time to stop by my channel, and hope you'll be back often.

      It really is. I spent so much time in it he had to bring me two cups of coffee! It was so lovely and everything he was growing was so big! I'm quite inspired to get back in my garden this year!

    I think Hugh summed it up right at the end when he said a garden is a home for your heart and for your soul. That is just exactly how I feel.

      THAT was my original title for this video! But changed it after discussion with Huw. LOL I deferred to his expertise.

      We all see his knowledge and processes in his videos, I tried to ask questions that would tell us why he does this, whether he still finds joy in gardening, etc. It was a lovely time with him, and I'm so glad he was up for me filming our conversation.

    RUclips suggested this video, probably because I'm subscribed to Huw's channel. It was so insightful to see him summarize his work when someone else is filming, as his channel is more episodic- than summary-style. Now, off to watch your videos . . .

      Thank you Megan and Zarah! I'm so glad you enjoyed this video. Huw and I had a lovely time, and I asked questions specifically because I wanted to know about the emotions evoked when he's in the garden, whether he could still be surprised by it, was it just work or was it still joy, that sort of thing. When I have the opportunity to visit other you tubers I really like to get to know the "why" about what they are doing, because we all see the "what" in their content. I also asked him about some practical things, and those answers will be coming out in a later video.

    Lovely video! What a beautiful trip you must have had. The only thing about eating in season for me is that I only have 1 growing season per year and that's summer, so preserving what I can is important. I so agree though that we should enjoy the fresh vege's too.

    • @LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm
      @LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm  2 года назад

      I really did enjoy my time there. Yeah, I agree, if you live somewhere with a shorter growing season, preserving becomes more important.

    Azteca broccoli is a relative of quinoa, isn’t it? I plan to try harvesting and threshing the seed. Not convinced it’s going to produce useful amounts, but it grows well, so maybe if I scale up a bit and, as you can also eat the leaves and if they’re good for bees too, that potentially makes it a very good addition. Excited!

      Hi Ellieban,
      I filmed this video while visiting Huw, so I'm not sure he'll see your comment, and I don't have the answer for you about whether it's related to quinoa. It very much looks like it could be though! Sounds like a great thing to try doing, let me know how it goes.

      As I filmed Huw for this video on my channel, I'm not sure he'll see your question. You may want to pop over to one of his other videos and ask. :)

    Where do you find seeds for Aztec broccoli? Not being funny I grew quite a few bean types this year and could not find any recipes for fresh Barlotelli and Canellini beans or very few as a result I have dried them, is this not normal, usually store spare potatoes in sacs, and carrots in sand, parsnips leave in the ground for a bit longer, does this count as processing or just storing for the hungry gap and is a good idea, don't have enough food in the garden in late winter, just got a bit confused by start of the video. Happy to eat in season but are you suggesting storage of unprocessed produce is not desirable? Preserving food is definitely very time consuming, storing unprocessed or minimally prpcessed is less so.

      @sowgrowandcook 2 года назад

      I’m pretty sure Huw wasn’t saying not to preserve your harvest; I think he was saying to enjoy eating in season - as well as preserving your harvest- if you live in a zone that allows both.

      Hi Hilary,
      I made the video while I was visiting Huw, so I'm not sure he will see your comment. I can't speak for him, but I got the sense he meant you could become self sufficient more quickly by learning to eat with the seasons. Also, it's important to remember that Huw lives in a temperate climate (Wales) where he can grow food nearly year round. The shorter your growing season, the more important food storage becomes I'd imagine. And his is just one opinion. There are many people who put a high priority on learning to store food. :)

      oh! also, I did a quick google search and found quite a few places to buy the seeds. I also learned that huauzontle is the proper name for it, so you might search for that as well.
