My Aunt who lives in Washington now, went to San Fernando High School at the same time he did when she lived in Los Angeles. She remembered him singing to Donna during lunch breaks all the time at school. The girls used to smile and giggle when he was around. She said he was really nice and remembered the plane crash too. I also worked with a guy at the Stein Mart in Granada Hill's and his grandfather and Ritchie's grandfather were brothers. Turns out Ritchie was a first cousin to him.
My Mom was at the last show that Buddy Holley, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper performed for The Winter Dance Party. She was born and raised in Blackhawk County, Iowa and her birthday was a few days after the concert. So, my Grandparents allowed my Mom and her 2 sisters along with another friend to go. They went to see Buddy Holley primarily, but my Mom was turned into a huge Ritchie Valens fan after watching him preform that night. When they woke up the next day and found out all had been tragically killed, she was devastated. She could never talk about it without crying. So, that's my little story for my Mom, she's no longer here to see your vlogs, but she would have loved them! Thanks again Jordan and Jah.
@@texasgina 😞 I'm so sorry about your Mom. It kinda hurts when you forget for a minute and think "oh wow, they'd really love this - I'll have to tell them about it later!" We love Ritchie Valens and love La Bamba! I watched it so often...then my kids loved it and now my grandkids love La Bombom as my grandson calls it. Rest In Peace Ritchie...you are still missed and your music lives on!
Richie Valens’s La bamba still gets played on radio in the UK. Last Christmas I went to see the musical ‘Buddy’ at a London theatre. The song that got the most cheers was La bamba. People of all ages were singing and dancing in the isles. It was fantastic.
How cool of you to do this video. My dad went to San Fernando High School and graduated two classes before Valens. He knew him, and went to his funeral too. Very sad!
So cool - I was 14 when I first saw the movie La Bamba when it was released for tv screening and was inspired to learn guitar - the sound track was awesome but I also bought Ritchie Valens original recordings as much as I love the Los Lobos cover Ritchie’s recordings have a sound and that I love - it was goal for over 30 years to visit his grave finally did last year 2018 travelling from Australia RV road trip New York to LA pulled into street where entry to the San Fernando mission Cemetry gates are at 2::00 and waited in the Rvlike an excited kid waiting for sun to come up to go in and visit his grave while I was there spoke to groundsman who said almost daily Ritchie Valens grave is visited by fans from all over the world 60 years after his death that’s is pretty incredible he has inspired many people to play guitar what legend
I fell in absolute love with his music when I was around 7-8. And still to this day, I do not understand how the plane actually crashed. He would’ve grown into such a wonderful artist. Gone too young.
I've seen Ritchie's grave. My dad's buried there too at San Fernando Mission Cemetery , as are Chuck Connors, (The Rifleman), William Frawley (Fred Mertz), William Bendix (Life of Riley), Charles Beaumont (A 'Twilight Zone' writer) and quite a few others of various fame.
When i watched la bamba theres something in the movie that strucked me ...the love between family the music ...up to this day ill never forget this movie when i have the opportunity to go to california i will visit his grave just like you did....
Love the movie LaBamba! My husband & I visited the Surf Ballroom last summer. It was amazing. It was open so we were allowed to walk around & take pictures. We then visited the crash site. It was very surreal.

Waylon Jennings was Buddy Holley's bass layer at that time. Waylon was supposed to go on the plane with Buddy Holley and Ritchie Vallens, but he (Jennings) saw that the Big Bopper was sick with the flu so he gave up his seat to him. It was a decision that haunted Jennings the rest of his life. It was reported later that a Buddy Holley band member heard an exchange between Jennings and Holley. When Buddy Holley found out that Jennings had given up his seat, Holley told Jennings, "I hope you freeze your ass off on the bus". To which Jennings replied, " I hope your airplane crashes".
Poor Pacoima was known as the armpit of the San Fernando Valley - probably because of all the industry. Watching you go up and down the stairs felt like i was at the Gym doing the Stairmaster your right i used to be fit and now that i stopped and started again is the worst feeling ever!Great video
I remember "the day the music died." I was 11 and really into Buddy Holly and Richie Valens(uela) and was really devistated. It was the first time in my young life that people I knew of and admired died and broke my sense of everything's going to be alright. The interesting thing about that flight is that Waylon Jennings was supposed to be on that flight but traded with either Richie or J.P. because he had a cold. Waylan went from being a member of Buddy's band to being a big country music star. I grew up in LA County until I was 20 and still miss the area. I'm now in my 70s, my house is paid for, and can't afford LA any more.
I have his first LP Ernie Valens his cousin signed it Richie's dad and Ernie's mom were brother and sister a great great guy Ernie was when I met him he believes he still owns the house at Ritchie bought before his death and the plane crash which is a terrible terrible loss for all of us in the music industry including late great Buddy Holly, and jiles p Richardson the Big bopper
Another great video. My name is Ricky from Brooklyn, NY. I have seen a lot of your videos and enjoyed all of them. Especially the ones you have done on Mae West. Love your dog! I had a chihuahua who I would take to the beach at night. Now have a rescue Chihuahua she Hates the beach go figure! Good Video.
I was actually in Pacoima back in 2000 and I stayed at Ritche's Aunt (Ernestine) and Uncle's (Lelo )house. So I got to meet them, unfortuneatley, Ernestine was in the hospital at the time but I was able to still meet her. I live in Iowa and I'm about 2 1/2 hours-3 hours away from Clear Lake, Iowa, where Ritchie's, Buddy's and The BB's plane went down, and live about 45 minutes away from where their pilot is buried. I am actually going to be going to Clear Lake and Mason City this summer. I can take some footage from the crash site. I saw the movie La Bamba back in 87, when it came out and honestly I had no idea who Ritchie Valens was. I only knew who the Big Bopper was and Buddy Holly. But after seeing the movie, I mean it's a real tear jerker, and I came interested in knowing more about Ritchie. Thank you so much for doing a vlog on Ritchie. As I have mentioned before, I love watching your vlogs!
@Chia Sanzes no of course not. How does it not make sense? I flew to Cali to visit a friend and she is friends with his family and we drove to Pacoima, and we stayed at their house. So what doesn't make sense?
Man! Look at those dayum chemtrails showing at 9:36 those lousy rotten bastards .. And at 14:20 the lines / trails are widening 'till hours later most likely they flooded the sky with the gray haze of chemtrail soup .. Great video as usual, I've seen a few of your videos already and really enjoy them as you have so much great information and and your own excellent style of dialogue and great photography skills. Keep doing what you do it's very much appreciated ..
very interesting and fascinating cemetery tour of The Great Ritchie Valens and yes watched La Bamba a few times, thank you for Sharing this from across the Pond in UK
Hey Jordan, great video. I saw the movie years ago, but I don't remember it now. Maybe it's time I should watch it again. Thanks for the William Frawley grave site tour as well.
Hey Jordan just came here from the Phil Hartman vlog but couldn't comment there, so just wanted to say even if it was sad it def was a well received vlog on his passing n life, and too see ww house karate kids n Brady's was a treat as well kudos to that vid, and the in depth backgrounds you venture on for us cheers to good vlogging 🤘
Definitely love all of your tributaries. Just saw a documentary on Barry White who said he would always be eternally grateful for Bob Keene/Keane hiring him as a producer of one of his A&R labels when he was young and struggling -- even when he "didn't know what A&R was".
Very nice video! I just watched LaBamba for the first time. Awesome story. Knew part of his story, but not much. Nice Ritchie vinyl you have. Hope you still have them.
My parents were very into music when I was young. (In the 80s) I was 7 and had a 50s cassette tape of hits with Chuck berry, big bopper, buddy Holly, ritchie valens.etc...I was hooked. I found out about the movie at that time. It was over. He also, was the reason I got into music.
Donna (Richie's girlfriend ) had a brother that was necking with my cousin Jannie in his car in front of her house. Jannie's big brother my cousin Harold recently out of the military (101 Airborn Div. Paratrooper) came out front and shook up the couple and proceeded to kick the young man's butt. I heard this story years later as they were two of my favorite cousins.
It's sad what happened to Ritchie, Buddy and JP Ritchie was just getting famous and starting to fly when it all came crashing down and all at 17 years old. I always wondered what their music would of been like if those guys did not die that night.
I’m watching this video and I just got to say I’m surprised that you went to Pacoima. It’s my hometown and I love how it’s on RUclips. I don’t see much about the valley
I have cousins how grewup in Pacoima and went to school with Valens. Last funeral I attended at that cemetery, I looked up Valen's plot. Ritchie Valens and Selena were grand musical icons who died, so young and tragically.
The La Bamba movie is still beautiful, sad, and will keep this magical musical boy alive forever in our hearts. Thanks for this visit!
Great nivt

@Chia Sanzes no of course not. How does it not make sense? I flew to Cali to visit a friend and she is friends with his family and we drove to Pacoima, and we stayed at their house. So what doesn't make sense?
Great video! You tell such great stories!
I'm I'm Canterbury U.K.
it is time to watch that film again.
take care, virtual friend
Hey Jordan just came here from the Phil Hartman vlog but couldn't comment there, so just wanted to say even if it was sad it def was a well received vlog on his passing n life, and too see ww house karate kids n Brady's was a treat as well kudos to that vid, and the in depth backgrounds you venture on for us cheers to good vlogging 🤘
I really enjoy your shows. There are great.
Hey buckeye, i to loved Ritchie as a kid....great video awesome rock on....
The best resource I have on Ritchie Valens is Ritchie Valens: The First Latino Rocker by Beverly Mendheim.
Thank u so much for sharing this ,I love to read and would appreciate reading about this talented Artist .😊 btw Just ordered this book 📖 ☺
I'm sure the book is long out of print, and I'm glad you ordered it, and hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.
Thanks for the video, I love labamba I seen it over 100 times
Ritchie was fantastic performer
I love La Bamba and Ritchie. My birthday is actually 30 years to the date the plane crash happened. Thanks for this tour.
I really enjoy your videos. Jah is such a good companion!
I love watching some of your older videos from back in the day pre-mask LOL
Definitely like seeing the little guy. Another good one
Also, I had no idea he was already famous at 17! What a loss.
I’ve been watching your videos for some time.Great Great videos ..Old Buddy Holly fan ...Greatest singer to ever live..
Rave on from Birmingham Al
I been to that cemetery my aunt and brother in law is buried there and a Doctor I used to go and see for years is buried there also .
Love his music & also the movie Labamba
Excellent Video!
I love that you met his manager. Great vlog
Cool video. Sad thing that happened to him and Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper.
It's sad what happened to Ritchie, Buddy and JP Ritchie was just getting famous and starting to fly when it all came crashing down and all at 17 years old. I always wondered what their music would of been like if those guys did not die that night.
Thanks 😊
I’m watching this video and I just got to say I’m surprised that you went to Pacoima. It’s my hometown and I love how it’s on RUclips. I don’t see much about the valley
Loved this vifeo. Loved richie myself growing up
Choked up right now long live rock and roll
I Thank you so much for this Video. I'm Addicted to La Bamba!!!
Beautiful movie ❤️🎸
I have cousins how grewup in Pacoima and went to school with Valens. Last funeral I attended at that cemetery, I looked up Valen's plot.
Ritchie Valens and Selena were grand musical icons who died, so young and tragically.
Great video
