  • (www.landroverf...) We would like to extend a huge "thanks" to our friends at Flatirons Land Rover for loaning us this new Defender to test off-road!
( www.TFLcar.com ) In this episode we take the brand new 2020 Land Rover into the woods to see how it performs off-road. To make it interesting we bring along our old, slightly clapped out 2006 Land Rover LR3 we bought for $5,500. Can the new $80,000 defender keep up with this old beast when the going gets tough? We test the new defender on the rocks, in the dirt and through some mud to find out!

You can option better tires from factory. Also, because it’s the bigger engine car, it’s brakes are bigger and more grabby. Smaller engine has smaller brakes which are more progressive. You can then also get 18” wheels from factory alongside the off-road tires. Make sure the optional diff is there too. This wasn’t a test for either vehicle though really. The trail is easy. I’ve driven tougher trails in a standard L322 Range Rover with ease. We need some proper tests, not just driving on a dirt road.

    1. 2:34 New "Defender" is really a tech updated Discovery
    2. 5:20 Not a serious off-roader or rock climber because of delicate tires, electronics, chassis and design (you can add $4000 scratch protection :))
    3. 12:17 Any buggy, Jeep or American truck, or even old Land Rover, would be much more fun on a trail
    4. 2:01 It is still overpriced to the moon
    5. New Ford Bronco here I come!

@Mikey I have a 2019 Ford Ranger Raptor and my colleague has a 2019 LR Discovery. I can send you POV footage with great quality sound of the Disco creaking and bending Unibody over undulations off road. And that from a 2019 Discovery with only 12,000 kms on the clock!
In my Body-on-Frame Ranger Raptor no such thing also no such noises in my brothers Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.
In a Unibody vehicle your suspension are directly connected to the car via shock struts also.
So IRL it's you that's annoyingly stupid. No Unibody vehicle should be allowed off road 😤

The new Defender is fantastic. Besides great off road ability, it now has comfort, safety and modern tech. It is now a daily driveable vehicle with a huge breadth of capability. It’s very customisable. Create the Defender that u want. Very easy to fit a set of proper off road tyres. And lift kits r already being fitted onto them if u want more ground clearance and off road ability. LR3 / LR4 r also a great vehicle. The Discovery 5 model has gone more luxurious and upmarket. The new Defender is the logical replacement of LR3 and LR4.

I agree, everyone wants to know how the new Defender stacks up. This video let me down, I had been refreshing the channel since they did the behind the scenes hoping for this but this is not what we wanted. The last race video was fun because they are two old off roaders that have been extensively covered and we know how they perform and it was about father vs son. This video is just showing us that the Defender can drive on dirt roads which my 98 Forester could do. Luckily there is a video by Diariomotor (spanish I think) That pits the new Defender against the Mercedes Gwagon (3 lockers) in a series of obstacles and I think it shows the differences well between them. Only bad think about their video is it is in spanish so you have to read subtitles.

Fun vids guys. The LR3 weighs 5100-5700 lbs and the new Defender claims 4800-5300 lbs. not a huge difference and we had a friend weigh the new Defender and it was actually 5600 lbs. and that’s without a third row seat. Both vehicles have the unibody but the LR3 also has a chassis.

I think that when TFL can get their hands on the bronco I think it should be a major triathlon type race they did with the power wagon, frontier and raptor. Go over some trails, running through mud and desert sand running in a bronco, Jeep, Land Rover or Toureg. I mean really give it a run for the money. Got to give to the guys running the drone for the aerial footage, great framing of both rovers near the end

The Discovery was designed to be the best all-round car in the world, you can more or less go anywhere, you can carry you're family to school, holiday or into a desert or muddy field. I think that Discovery generation is probably the best looking Land Rover vehicle be ever and Australians tow 7,700lb travel trailers with them into the outback. A fantastic car and if I could be afford to run one in no Ireland i would but the tax system here is shit!

That is the result of using lift rods. The jack the suspension too high in off-road height and it kills articulation. People do it to use bigger tires but in most cases you can get more traction with the stock size and the suspension working as it should.

What i would prefer to see is not a race but a test of traction between both like they used to on that one obstacle on Gold Mine Hill. I just remember its where they failed to get the Outback up it, although that could partly be the CVT's fault. But yeah put both Land Rovers in no traction, off camber, suspended wheels, from a stop try to get up the tough bits and see who does better. Maybe they're trying a new format that is more entertaining?
Thats more what i would like to see, a better off road ability test than a race where your route has easier choices.
If you have to race, a better way is to time each. That could tell us that one vehicle is more efficient at off road travel which is also important in the wilderness where all there is dirt roads and jeep trails. Range could also be a good test. Which Land Rover can travel the same route off road the furthest?
