  • In this video i cover in detail some of the portwork that i have completed on my Brodix B1 cylinder heads for my dream engine. She's an all-aluminum 588 big block Mopar that i am building for my ole high school hot rod 1964 Plymouth Fury in my tiny little garage. In this video i discuss the different steps that i took to get through the porting of these old school aftermarket cylinder heads.

    Kevin, very nice presentation!!! I'm a die hard Mopar person. I rebuilt my first engine in 1957. First race car was a 1964 Dodge Cornet factory drag race car, with a 426 Max Wedge. I built a 530 cu in with B-1 heads

    Rest of my comments; I remember doing hours of grinding for hours as you did on the B-1 heads. I've been porting heads for 57 year's. I built the 530, it went into a Dodge truck puller. It turned out to one of the top contenders at that time. I'm also a SAE Master engine machinest and etc. Keep up the great work 👍😊.

    • @griffittsgarage
      @griffittsgarage  Год назад +1

      Thanks for the comment, Sean! There are some things I like about the B1's as compared to the Gen II Hemi's.
      For one the valve train is way better.
      The combustion chamber is better in terms of quench and mixture motion.
      Although for this build, I do wish i could get a little bit bigger intake valve and the intake port could be a little better (but that's just me being hyper critical).
      Its not easy getting an inline valve engine to make big power. The B1 feels like a giant small block chevy head with a raised big block chevy rectangle intake port opening. Its going to be fun.
      Thanks again, Kevin

    The dexterity that it takes to Finnish combustion chambers and ports like that is incredible. I know first hand. My wife and I stopped be UEM in May. The owner Chris, as I recall was trying to head out, but he could tell of my enthusiasm to get a tour of the headquarters, that he obliged. It was great. I use their pistons regularly on clients builds. I am not a Mopar guy. However I like V8 engines either way, and I share your passion to go fast. And yes, mechanical roller camshafts rule. Mike at Jonescam, Bullet cams, are my go to people. I look forward to more cool videos.

      It’s funny how we get labeled a Mopar guy or a Ford guy… as a hobbyist I’ve probably done more Chevrolet engines than anything. I do have a 460 sat aside for a future project as well. I agree with you, engines are just fun.

    Well what an amazing Craftsman you've become. Props to Mopar guy. In 5he summer of 68 at 17 I've been reading some old hot rod books about the early hemis, so helping my Dad since the age of 12 keeping food on the table and fire wood for the winter. Junking. And all that. I found a 57 Imperial wrecked at a used cad dealership, Dad worked a weekend selling recap tires. I bought that Imperial for 75 dollars. For money I made on the side mowing lawns. A a small resort lake. The place i went to school there was a senior who had a early 50s Chevy club coupe. All fixed up with a v8
    Riding the school bus I often seen it cruising town we we the last ones off the bus. I found the same kind of coupe. And put the drive train in the 52 and actually drove it. That summer of 68. The only thing I didn't do was weldcthe drive shaft. To this day I don't know why I did this but I put 3 ft long or longer 3inch sq. Tubing traction bars on it. The one my neighbors was reving his new car at the near by cross road, hearing this i jump up on the picnic table it time to see a car top really moving. Jumped in to the junk yard car went to look to see where it was . The guy live a mile as the crow flies stopping there I seen the youngest son. He took me to see his older brother. And the it was a recently purchased drak green Heni post Road Runner. He gave me a ride in it made a couple of rides in it.
    All this set the stage for me being a MOPAR For life. As for you great head porter. Extraordinaire (sp) I've watched many videos. Like many people have commented. I subbed right away.

Left the parking lot. Not happy so I hit the gas and hit the 5k and bang. It was amazing. So next clear road and I forgot all about her. Being up in the norther state we were use to fishtailing. Gravel roads and all. So picked the owner and told him ive figured how to shift like him.. He said go for it . Wow he said you sure did. Soon we were at the drag strip . After a few passes, he tossed me the Keys and said go see what you can do.. well that was my first and next to the last. Because I dropped him 4ths. Not real happy from that time on. Life soon changed I won the draft lottery. So I joined . But that first summer my I bought my first car to drive to work. A white 1960 Dodge Matador 2 Dr. Ht. The old 301 was OK. It died. So a found a 413 (Golden Lyon) from a 1961 New Yorker. Started it. And it had a burnt valve . Pulled the head went to the auto parts house . Stuck it in because I had to get to work. It never gave me a problem. It really woke the old batmobile. As my friends called it. Luckily it wasn't black. At that time and the draft. Messed up playing in the best time to be a mopar guy. But I can truly say I did get to order a 1971 HEMI CUDA. (caps on purpose) . Burnt orange black vinyl top and interior.

      We have found that, as we raise the intake port window, we tend to increase the throat percentages (generally speaking)
      The traditional low port production heads get a smaller throat dimension, because of the lack od valve exposure on the short side radius.

Not a Mopar Guy but I'll enjoy following your project. Enjoy the 128-132 formula for cam selection out there too. That had to have been reversed engineered from dyno sessions and Track Time. Nice work on the ports, much attention to detail. Someone needs to make a cutter to shape the valve guides in port, something possibly in multi blade (3) pencil sharpener fashion, that lead pilots from the guide bore or possibly a form cutter on the fly. Guide ends do need shaped and done without loss of length.

    Very nice anyway you already picked up a tenth because of the weight loss with all the aluminum you took out LOL. I have never ported B1s but I have on about everything else Mopar the only thing I would have done a bit different would be in the spring seats the thickness between the seat of the valve springs and the roof of the port. With a huge cam that will need very high open valve pressure springs I would have left a bit more meat in there but like I said I never ported B1s just seems to me 0.50 thickness is a little thin especially at 7000+ RPM. Don't get me wrong I can see you do fantastic work but it would have maybe maybe gave up a little bit of flow for stronger longer lasting heads in fact at the track there might not have been any difference in the future ET.
    Any remember flow numbers are great but velocity is just as important I know you already know this very well because the width of the bowl area I think you said 90 or 91 percent from the valve seat diameter anyway when you get that monster running I cant wait to see it.

    Love the video. Have a look at predator heads, if you haven't already. I haven't seen a better wedge head than the preds. There really isn't as I'm sure you know a wedge for a mope that can fill the cylinders of a big inch motor. You know what would be really cool for BB Mopar Wedge engines? A *Wedge* head that has the same port arrangement as a Hemi that could actually use a Hemi intake. I'm not talking about Hemi heads on a Wedge here.
    I wonder if it's doable?
    I'm watching this and thinking of all the variations of these heads over the years and not one has addressed the paired intake ports and paired center exhaust ports at least that I know of. Ultimately they might be limited by port cross sectional area on the intakes because the pushrods bracket the intakes and heat concentration on the center exhausts.
    I do know many heads support big power it's more just a thought experiment.

You are correct. It is possible and the only reason It’s never been done is because of small market size… the guys that tend to focus on ideas as deep as this see the big Mopar as too small of numbers and they couldn’t get a big enough return on their investment. It was something I found in a technical book store and was well out of date by the time I read it but I was shocked and disgusted but at the same time amazed at the lengths Mopar people would go to when they got sick of being beaten by Fords.

      Hi Magnus, thanks for asking.
      Although I have been playing with port work for a really long time last, I just stick to the proven basics. Straighten the roof. Don’t over port the bowl and keep a certain amount of restriction at the push rod pinch. Keep in mind, it’s a 4.5” piston operating between 5000 and 7500 RPM. These heads could actually stand to be larger, but for now I just want to see how it works in the car. I’m super excited about getting to do this.
      David Vizard is a wealth of information, as is Weingartner Racing, Eric has the best cylinder head channel on RUclips.

    Many years ago when i was a kid i had mopar hot rods but at that point my friends had chev and i finally moved on One of the things that i did not see or know about was a set of heads besides a hemi that would support the hp i wanted to see . There were just torque motors and i wanted more . I always wondered if any one made a set of heads would support hp like a ford or chev . Thanks for the videos

      I love all muscle cars. Growing up my cousin bought a brand new 71 roadrunner. He was 18 and I was 11. I was like his little brother. I was hooked to Mopar ever since. I think everyone has a reason for the brand they prefer. I have helped build all of them. Just couldn’t understand why everyone wanted the same old Chevy. I like that not everyone has a Mopar. Sorry for rambling. I absolutely look forward to your videos. Going to start on my 72 Charger 440 build soon.

      Tim thank you so much for the comment! I like this question.
      All I want is a 8 second time slip. It I don’t want to get silly with the nitrous. It ran 9’s on the old 498 BS headed combo… so I think it’s obtainable 🤔
      I’m taking a break from doing work for others, long enough to hopefully get this RUclips idea off the ground.
      What heads were you looking to have done?
      Again thanks Tim

    Can you just raise the intake ports right up to at or above the gasket rail and make them even more straight-shot to the valve?
    I understand that would be a vast amount of work, custom intake, etc.
    But aren't the ideal ports just a straight shot to the valve?
    I also know that heads are not a constant-flow thing and different rules apply, or we could just use 6" diameter ports for maximum flow, but this is a piston engine, not a gas turbine.

    • @griffittsgarage
      @griffittsgarage  Год назад

      Indeed, that is exactly what I did. The top of the port window is directly inline with the top of the bowl. Which matches the angle of the intake manifold runner. It’s pretty neat. That’s where maybe 80% of the material came from.
      If I spent a crazy amount time welding up the roofs above the intake ports we could keep raising them yes.
      But there are bigger heads out there that I would look at first.
      Thanks for watching, I like how you think🙏🏻

    • @exploranator
      @exploranator Год назад +1

      @@griffittsgarage That sounds like a beautifully set up set of heads. For years with the manifold, like the Tarantula for example, people just acted like changing directions of the intake flow suddenly mattered not at all.

      Pretty much, it’s just that grinding cast iron is a much slower process. It’s also rougher on the ole hands. Aluminum is soft and easier to cut.

    Uh yes, Kevin, me and some of the boys here are wondering, are you running a v8 or an automatic?
    Also, are you planning on running full race cams or just 3/4 race, cause you mentioned that you're gonna run street & strip, so we weren't sure at that point! Also, if you ever suspect a burnt valve there at the track all you gotta do is hold a dollar bill up at the tail pipe and if it doesn't suck it into the exhaust pipe then it's not gonna be a burnt valve that's keeping you from turning in those 8 second passes, it's probably because you haven't flipped your breather top over upside down, not to mention it sounds much better when you kick it down to the floor when you're taking off...trust me!!!
    One last thing, we all think you're shooting wayyyyyyyyyyy low on your 60' times! 8 seconds? Really? Come on man, I know it's a dang Ole 67 model Plymouth but geez, you art to at least get way deep into the 5's or the 6's with your 60' times cause if you don't you ain't never gonna outrun them dern Chevrolet boys in them Camaros & Chevells in the 1/4 mile!!!
    OK, feel free to holler anytime if you need more advice, I'm thinking of starting a blog on this kind of information & advice, for free!
    OK buddy, later!!! 😀😃🙂

      @@griffittsgarage I hope you don't have to clearance the pushrod holes too much in your heads from having a lot of offset on the intake rocker.What size pushrods will you use 7/16" depending on your spring pressure.We had to remove the roller lifter at the track 1 time and barely had enough room with the heads on but I think you have a taller deck ht.
