  • Have you lost your footing out in a boat? We add non skid to give the floor extra grip. I also take the liberty to change the color because white is to white out on the flats. I show you how to tape out, sand and prep the surface, mix and tint the gel coat & take you each step of the way in this short video. I also have another video doing the same project on a Parker center console. Don't forget to subscribe if your fixing your boat or fishing the coastal Carolinas.

    Thanks for the great video! I am going to repair the fiberglass steps in my pool and your video answered all the questions I had on the gelcoat finish and adding sand for grip. Ordered the gelcoat with wax from Jamestown Distributors. Everyone else tried to make it look like rocket science. Thanks for keeping it simply for us DIY'ers!

    What about mixing microspheres in gelcoat?

      I'm sure that would work. Sometimes whatever you've got is what you got.

    How course of a roller pad did you use? I've seen people do it by dabbing with a paintbrush but it takes so long. Also is gets pretty high/rough and you need to knock it down with sandpaper. Just wondering how the roller texture turns out

      I forget i think 3/8" nap. I usually use 3/8. 3/16 would work but would be fine. 1/2" I think would be to much and you would have to sand down. Hope that helps.

    Nice video, but the quality is good enough to make out the final appearance.

    let me ask what if you boat has the paint splatter design then how do you go about doing that?

    • @captainrobthompson8728

      Ok so you could go over the whole thing and make it a sold color or you can get the black gelcoat. I think from Carolina skiff in pints. I think the way is to use a 2" brush you have to have the right amount on it. So practice first on cardboard. Almost throw and twist the brush in your hand. This will spider web it. I hope that helps.

      Yes you can I roller it in once I have the floor wet then roll over again. My window is small so I do sections at a time. Roll out 3' by 3' then spread sand then roll over again. Move to next spot. Does that help?

    Hi, I just ran across this video. I have a 2007 Parker 2320 Pilothouse used for fishing everything from salmon to large tuna. The entire existing gel-coated deck was cracked from baking in the Florida sun. I want to apply new gel-coat with non slip to the deck. I have already prepped the deck by running an 80 grit with an orbital palm sander over the surface, then I applied a one part bondo filler by pushing in and swiping the filler with razor blade to fill in the necessary cracks, letting it harden then I ran the palm sander over the entire deck again. Now I am ready to buy gel-coat. I want to ensure uniform and even spread of the added sand. So, I thinking of premixing the sand in one container and using a drill mixer tool so the sand is evenly suspended in the gel-coat, then pure into a tray and roll that as my first and second coat. Or, should a have a second tray without sand as my immediate second coat, and do the first and second coat application in 3x3 foot sections as recommended? My goal is to achieve an even texture and so I'm thinking premixing the sand with a drill into the gel-coat is better. What do you think?

      Ok so I kind of like both ideas. One. The sand sinks fast so you really need to keep mixing. I like spreading sand by hand too so you can build up what type of non skid you need. I have a feeling you'll be fine because your taking the time to do it right. Just make sure your sand is dried out good as well. That I think is the biggest trick.

      I wouldn't use Bondo on a boat-it is hydrophyllic. Use a fairing compound, smooth it out, sand smooth to the edges and then acetone before applying your gelcoat...

    So skimmer does not add a non skid coat on there boat. kind of unrelated to this post but you said in another video that you brought the hull and added the poling platform. Did that save you any money?

    • @captainrobthompson8728
      @captainrobthompson8728  5 лет назад

      They can. As for my preference I ran the boat for a year to find out what I needed over what wanted. I had the Honda motor the trolling motor and platform off of another boat I had. The 3/8" nap and sand made the non skid aggressive the color is all I had to choose. You always save money doing all your own work. I was a Honda outboard tech for 15 years this is what I do all the time no matter where I worked. I can only blame myself if it doesn't work out the way I want. If you have anything you need to work on let me know. I'll help.

    Can first coat be the no wax , let cure and second coat be with wax and sand?

    • @captainrobthompson8728
      @captainrobthompson8728  3 года назад

      You can do that. But the first coat will not cure so don't expect it to dry. It needs the wax to float up and seal it off so it can cure. I just did one good coat.

    Taking off interlux and going to replace it with gel coat .. Do i need to remove all the interlux down to the original gel coat. Ant suggestions on how to remove the interlux. i have a power washer and orbital sanders. can you buy gel coat pre tinted ?

    • @captainrobthompson8728
      @captainrobthompson8728  2 года назад

      Hi Harold. I would Sand it down all the way to get good adhesion. Orbital will work but a harbor freight 8" will make much quicker work of it. You can get gelcoat in any color from spectrum but most places have some general colors white and tint is not hard. Make sure final coat has wax in it to seal out the air and cure.

      Since it's paint 80-100 would not be to bad. 40-60 would really tear it up quick.

      @captainrobthompson8728  2 года назад

      Depends how aggressive you want the non skid. I've done it on both coats or just top coat. I like it just on the top coat for recreational fishing aggressive if it's a work boat and your out in any sea.

    What’s the name of the paint

    • @captainrobthompson8728
      @captainrobthompson8728  5 лет назад +1

      It's gel coat not a paint. There are lots of different manufactures. It's a lot thicker and harder. Jamestown distributors have a good selection at a good price they have a tech line as well if you need to figure out quantities. I hope that helps
