It’s virtually unbelievable that none of the correspondents even mention the existence of the Brussels Agreement when talking about the causes of unrest. The EU has signed and guaranteed its implementation but Prishtina has been ignoring it for 10 years now, without any consequences. This is the main reason why the Serbs boycotted the elections in order to show that they will no longer participate in the Kosovo institutions unless the agreement is fulfilled.
Before Brussels, these municipalities were completely out of the Kosovo system and the agreement required the Serbs to integrate. They did their part, but the Albanians have been avoiding theirs for 10 years. Kosovo Prime Minister Kurti came to power by promising not to recognize the Brussels Agreement. Since he finally started to feel the pressure to fulfill the obligations guaranteed by the EU, he is trying to escalate the conflict, so he can find an excuse to kill the deal. To be sure, he is not alone, as the German government also tries to meke the deal obsolete because it finds it too good for the Serbs. Therefore this report by DW is so superficial and biased. Note that the Belgrade perspective is presented by an Albanian journalist known for his pro-Albanian views in the dispute.

The democratic principle, from an American perspective, is simple. Our government recognized Kosovo's independence. I assume our diplomats were intelligent enough to know what the borders were in that recognition. Therefore, Kosovo has a right to set up elections within its internationally recognized borders. And Serbia should stop trying to destabilize Kosovo with ethnocentric racialized games! The Serbians had an opportunity to vote, they could have voted their own mayor into those offices. There are no reports that the elections were not free and fair. The Serbians deliberately chose to try to destabilize Kosovo on merely, prejudicial ethnic grounds by boycotting the vote. So, what that only 3% voted? That's on the Serbians, not the Kosovo Government. Pres. Biden & Sec. Blinken, if you can't reason properly on American democratic principles, get our troops out of that country. This is an EU matter. Serbs, you didn't vote, your choice. You lose. That is democracy. Your basis for the boycott is immoral. Your ethnocentric attitude is totally unacceptable. You lost by your choice.

    1. ALBANIANS (ILLYRIANS) ARE THE ORIGINAL HABITANTS OF THE BALKAN PENINSULA, THE SLLAVIC (SERBS AND OTHERS) CAME LATER, ALBANIANS ACCEPTED THEM IN THEIR TERRITORY
    2. SERBIA (RUSSIAS PUPPET) COMMITED GENOCIDE ON ETHNIC ALBANIANS DURING THE MILOSEVIC REGIME. TO THIS DAY THEY STILL HAVENT ACCEPTED THE CRIMES AGAINS HUMANITY, THEY HAVENT PAID ANY DUES, PLUS PRESIDENT OF SERBIA VUCIC (MILOSEVIC MINISTER OF INFORMATION..) Currently, Serbians are suffering like humans, but if Russia controls influence over Eastern Europe, they will suffer like dogs. So it all comes down to how you prefer to suffer, at least suffering like humans has some dignity attached to it, an entity you can blame for your suffering, but under Russia, you'll be too focused on dodging conscription, forced labor, and prison sentences for speaking your mind, you'll only care about raw survival, your next meal.

People like you who know nothing about that period (which you showed saying in Titos time Serbia was on Russians side) should better educate themselves before trying to be a smarta**. Tito was a splinter in the eyes of super powers because he refused to pick sides rather he brought people together from different religions and ethnicities made it work, people lived, worked and laughed together and nobody was asking where is who from. That is just a proof that it is possible for people to get along, unlike now atm in the balkans and the rest of the world. Biggest problem is for this situation and the most of them in the world is that 99% of countries are forced to pick sides instead of everyone trying to be on the same one and improve relationships and humanity.

Life was better under Tito, because he borrowed an utterly unsustainable amount of money to fund the Yugoslav economy. Part of the reason why the country collapsed, was because of his fiscal irresponsibility.
Tito was able to keep the good times rolling through exorbitant IMF loans and that was enough to mostly suppress the long-simmering ethnic tensions, but as soon as he died, the house of cards came tumbling down.
