I know that had to be so hard for him. All of the late night shows are canceling obviously not just because of no audience, but that's a big factor. It's just dry trying to tell jokes without a response and I'm sure it was nerve wracking for John to do this. But I'm glad he did!

Hearing John Oliver talk in a blank, empty room without any laughter was so eerie. Watching things that are supposed to have audiences but don't now feels post-apocalyptic, like public figures are robots that are left working after all the humans have died.
Going to school with no teachers and only a couple of people at any time was weird. We had to collect our books and every single teacher was in a meeting so we kinda just went in there and grabbed it.

He was probably grey all along but stylists were shut down and he couldn’t get it done. If you watch later episodes his haircuts were mishappened, he or his wife were probably cutting it.
I must mentally applaud how Jon Oliver told the first joke as per his usual- and he immediately noticed how awkward it was without the audience laughter- and he immediately changed up the delivery to be more mellow and personal. Coming into this almost two years later has me laughing and crying at almost the same time. I started outwardly sobbing at John introducing Fauci, because that was a simpler time when we had no idea who Anthony Fauci was.
It made the jokes feel like they were falling flat. You never really realize how much you use the audience's laughter to cue your own until the audience is gone.
That's because you're expecting jokes - and the lack of canned-laughter, makes it impossible to tell where the punchlines of his weak jokes are. He is flailing his arms at Trump, listing the ONE of the two countries that has responded diligently to this crisis; Singapore and South Korea. Other than these TWO countries - NO GOVERNMENT IN THE WORLD has responded with due diligence. If anything - Trump has actually done a LOT more than some countries (like Sweden... which has done sweet fuck-all... and is TO THIS DAY - forcing parents to send their children to school at the threat of going to jail/loosing custody). Trump is a pile of shit.... but compared to ALL the other piles of shit... this pile of shit at least floats. John Oliver will never even recognize this... this is what makes John Oliver a partisan hate-mongerer intent to tear the country down. For example: Why does a leader say that the markets are doing fine? Because people are stupid fucking herd-animals. The little things make such a big difference in the void of this broadcast. After the little rant about Liverpool, the audible "thump" of his hand on the desk before his says "Look" somehow captures the desperation in the message he is delivering. It probably wasn't intentional, but it works.

He's such a genuine man. This is a weird time - especially seeing John without the studio and no laughing in the background. But when it got to doctors in Italy deciding who lives and who dies, you could see that it affected him. It feels a bit like the end of the world. Here I am in 2022 rewatching this because autoplay is weird. I jokingly say to myself in fits of laughter with this show "we don't deserve John Oliver." But man, this dropped three days after things really started hitting the fan, and in retrospect I wish John Oliver had had some sort of fireside chat like this every single day of 2020. Funny, sincere, calm and collected with a real sense of urgency, but never panic. We really don't fucking deserve John Oliver.
I remember this one so well. I had just been furloughed by my job and was looking for something...anything to help guide me through. Hearing John say "we're gonna be on our own here for awhile" made me feel better
It's moments like these that show how good John actually is at his job, because he's still able to give a good performance despite there being no reaction to his lines at all.

At 5 am this morning, my husband went to work. He is a physician at a VA hospital and going to be seeing few more coronavirus patients today. This morning it felt like he was going on a war. There is no isolation or quarantine for our healthcare works. Please pray for them 🙏

I live in Washington and went grocery shopping Saturday. Seeing all those empty shelves has made me feel surreal as frack. It's like living in a horror movie.

I’ve seen several other late night hosts go on without the audience lately, but John is the best at this by far. His timing is flawless and he just moves along with the show.
It was weird to watch... He looked uncomfortable. But also...his inflections were as he were in the room with you. That was...strange for TV Talk Show
Because unlike many others he actually has comedic timing that doesn’t rely on responses from others.
