CHRISTMAS MOVIE REVIEW: Bette Davis 🎄 THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER with Steve Hayes
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 8 сен 2024
- Bette Davis, Monty Woolley, Ann Sheridan and Jimmy Durante have the time of their lives celebrating the Christmas Holidays together in THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER (’41). Woolley recreates his famous Broadway role as acerbic, critic Sheridan Whiteside who breaks his leg on the ice in front of an average, mid-west, household and proceeds to invade and turn their world upside down. It’s comic mayhem at its finest with a plucky cast at the top of their game. Merry Christmas from all of us to all of you!

It's so obvious that Steve is having as much fun as we are when he reviews this delightful, witty gem so crammed with actors having a good time; the Man Who Came To Dinner was the first play I ever directed, some fifty years ago (!) and the bonding between cast members remains strong decades later--Unmitigated fun is easily spread from the stage to the audience, and although there are dozens of topical references probably lost on audiences today, it still works as brilliant American farce!
I so agree and thank you for the lovely compliment! Thanks for watching & Happy Holidays! Steve
I do look forward to all your videos. !
My favorite Monty Wolley story, Monty Wolley was the classmate and good friend of Cole Porter not a former professor of Porter's that they had Wolley portray in the movie "Night and Day" . Porter and Wolley would drive around NYC in Porter's convertible looking for "Tricks" and one night they spotted a sailor standing on a street corner. They struck up a conversation with the sailor who kind of suspected that they were trying to pick him up, so he asked them outright, "Are you two c**ksuckers?" Wooley smiled and said, "Now that the preliminaries are over, why don't you get in and we can discuss the details?"
Hilarious.
Bette Davis played a mighty fine game of chess in Hollywood.
Yup.
Monty Woolley was perfect ❤ when you can't say something nice about someone come sit by me 😅😅😅
You and Alice Roosevelt! LOL!
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Lmao of sweet Alice Roosevelt... 😋 🤣
Merry Christmas Steve. I think in this film Bette gave one of her most restrained and natural performances. She's very real while all the others are big😂
I agree! People who are used to seeing Bette play such BIG, dramatic roles are always surprised to see how restrained she is.
Yes, I like it when she says she's waited a long time for love. So lovely.
@@QueenOfTheNorth65 Yes, because of her "Bad Girl parts, she was always looked for undretated roles ,like this one, " the Geat", : Old Aquaintance" and the nice sister in " A Stolen Life", which, she felt, showed her for who she thought she was. Thanks for watching! Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ It's very heartfelt. My favourite scene is when they go ice skating. But the actor who plays her beaux is so wooden 😆
I totally agree.
Merry Christmas Steve! I didn't realize that Ann Sheridan and George Brent were briefly married in the early 40's. George's daughter, Suzanne, was interviewed on YT, she's writing a book about her dad.
George got around. Bette was his ex-lover as well and used to joke to her friend Geraldine Fitzgerald, that Gerry was the only woman on the lot who hadn't been to bed with Brent. LOL! Happy Holidays!
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Steve, yes, I remember your previous comment about GB &BD on previous videos. According to Brent's daughter, BD and Barbara Stanwick were his two favorite co-stars. In looking @ his wiki profile, he was briefly married to Ruth Chatterton in the early 30's, so he clearly liked strong women. There was a lot of playing around in the studio system back then.
This is one of my favorites too...and we just watched The Bishop's Wife. Synchronicity. Merry Christmas!
Love 'em both! Happy Holidays!
Steve, your review of "The Man Who Came to Dinner" was an extra-special Christmas treat for me. In 1975 when I was a high school freshman (Naperville Central High School, Naperville Illinois) I was in a stage production of "The Man Who Came to Dinner". Even now I'm impressed at the talent of the kids who were in the play. I did the sound effects and had a walk-on part as one of the police officers. Many years later I saw the movie version and after all that time I remembered so much of the dialog.
I'm sure. These wonderful experiences in highschool plays stay with us always. I still remmeber bits and lines from the musicals I did in highschool and loved every one of them. Happy Holidays!
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Why don't you tell them about the drag shows you did? In High School. At your age?
I loved this movie, when I grew up they didn't show it during the Holidays, which drove my mom crazy. She wanted us to see it. There was no cable, no recorders of any kind for movies for the public. The only way to see it was at a movie art house and we always missed it. when cable came and they showed the movie, she was so excited, she recorded it for both my brother and me,
Mothere knows best! Hooray!!! It's wierd how on the local staions , when we were kids, some movies would show up all the time and other favorites hardly at all. Glad you fionally caught up with it and that yiour Mom recorded it for posterity! Happy Holidays! Steve
My favorite Christmas film (that I can't get anyone else to watch!) Ann Sheridan is so lusciously bitchy; The Oomph Girl, indeed! Everyone is so good, and the plot rolls along ("AAUGH! A penguin bit me!") so well - - a really wonderful comedy.
A Merry Christmas to all at TOQATM, and best wishes for the new year! 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Hapy Holidays and I'm glad you like the episode. Perhaps, you can get friends to watch the moviue this year!
I'll watch with you my friend. I simply love black and white film. Merry Christmas to you and your family. I am having Christmas dinner tomorrow. The first time not on Christmas Day. We have to share our children and grandkids with others. This is the first year that one of my daughter- in -laws will be celebrating the holidays without her mother 🙏 She will be with her dad and 7 sisters and their families on Christmas. Sending many blessings and enjoy your holidays and food. 🤶🌲🎁☃️🦌❄️🎄❤️✌️
There are good reasons you can't get anyone else to watch this.
Ann Sheridan was one of my dad’s favorites. I was introduced to her from
Pistols & petticoats. My dad felt bad when she passed away.
I remember P 'n' P. It was a cute show, on Saturday nights, and typical of the rural sitcoms at the time. Ann wasn't replaced; they closed the show down.
Such a shame. She was so good in everything!
I love this picture so much! And Annie is fabulous in it, holding her own with the Queen of the Lot. That shocking Schiaparelli-esque gown where she is clearly braless! Oomph!!
I know! I'm amazed they got away with it! That outfit is sensational! Orry-Kelly knew his stuff!
Merry Christmas fellow film lovers and movie buffs. It’s such a joy to share these glittering superior movies together knowing we’ve all seen most of them multiple times and hold them in high affection. I first saw this movie as a child and loved it. I still do and it’s a Christmas pleasure to wallow in Steve’s hugely entertaining review with its insight and detail and his hilarious impersonation of Bette. May you all have a wonderful festive season. Until we meet again.
Indeed! Happy Holidays and thanks so much for watching!
I loved this film. The subtle shade was everything.
Me too. Happy Holidays!
Gotta love Miss Sheridan.....and a very Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 ❤️
To you too, Kevin. Hope you have lovely holidays. Always nice to hear from you! Best Wishes; Steve
I love your reviews (and impressions! Especially of Bette Davis) and this one is just as entertaining as the movie!
LOL! Many thanks, but don't let Bette or Billie Burke hear you say tha! LOL!!
It's a jewel of a comedy with the perfect cast. La Sheridan almost steals it, much like Hope Lange in "Pocket full of miracles."
Bette was a great comedienne. She was hilarious in that movie with James Cagney, where she's a heiress kidnapped for ransom, I think.. I can't remember the title.
🤔 "The Bride Came C.O.D." (1941)
@tonynegron1927 Thanks, Tony!!! That's the one! Cagney was also hilarious. Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄!!!
"The Bride Came C.O.D.", one of the few times she acted with a male star of her stature. Most men were intimidated by her.
Oh Steve! Thank you for reviewing one of my all time favorite Christmas films! I got whiplash clicking on to this as soon as I saw the notification! What a fun movie, Davis seemed almost relieved to let someone else chew up the scenery for a change. Mary Wicks was great in "White Christmas" too. And by the way, I agree with you fully on the Cole Porter bio- pic. What a phoney stinker!😆 Anyway thank you for another year of pure entertaining enjoyment and may you and yours have a delightful holiday season! ❤🎄⛄🌟❄️
Cole Porter, actually.
My pleasure. Thanks for watching and Happy Holidays! Steve
@@ginnylorenz5265 Yup.
This is one of my absolute favorites of all time! I just love Monty Woolley!😊
He's perfect for it!
Steve, Your dahling man!!! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! I asked for this review last Christmas and you (or someone else) remembered! You never disappoint. Happy Holidays!!! xxx ooo
So glad you are pleased. Thanks for watchiung and have a wonderful Christmas and New Year! Steve
Love this movie, and this review was a blast! Ann Sheridan tore it up, and I was bowled over by Jimmy Durante - I'm only familiar with his voice work in Frosty the Snowman. Bette Davis - what an unusually subdued role - evidence of her artistry in taking a more subdued role? In any case, to paraphrase a Durante tune (used in Sleepless in Seattle): thanks to Steve for taking the time to make someone happy with your stellar reviews! 🎉❤😊
Awww, that was so sweet! Thank you! You made my day! happy Holidays! Steve
We did this play in high school, Spring of 1964. I was one of the choir boys, but my older sister took the part of the loony old maid relative, an Elsa Lanchester type. She grabbed the part with both hands and tore up the scenery. They awarded her the 'Best Thespian' trophy.
You're lookin' good, old sock. Merry Christmas.
Good for Sis! It''s a great part! Happy Holidays!
Absolutely wonderful review I too also enjoy this highly entertaining movie Monty Wooley is great I think Clifton Webb would of been fantastic as well . Bette Davis is my favourite actress of all time and love her in anything she does . My favourite Christmas movie is Christmas In Connecticut with the great Barbara Stanwyck . Thank you so much Steve for another outstanding year of your special reviews all the very best for the best time of year to you and your family Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Luv Carl Australia.
Although Webb was as acerbic and sarcastic, he wasn't as bombastic and that role called for it in spades. I agree with Bette, Barrymore would have been absolutely perfect,....in his younger days. Because his own character was close to this one ( aside from not being gay).
Thank you for your reply you make a good point regarding Webb Merry Christmas Carl
@@ladywisewolf3942 He would have been terrific. Laird Cregar wanted the role as well.
Hello Carl! Just watched ' Christmas In Connecticut " last nite! Great minds think alike! Happy Holidays!
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ wow Laird Gregar I can actually vision that thanks for the information and by the way Chicken is my weakness love Sidney Greensteet your the best Steve cheers Carl .
One of my all-time favourite movies for the holidays (after The Bishop's Wife). Monty was brilliant in this.
I feel exactly the same way on both counts. Thanks for watching! .
Sheridan: "I shall be a flower girl and give the groom an iron toothpick as a wedding present."
It's almost a throw-away line - I'm kind of surprised it was left in - it's pretty definitive!
Well, sometimes they managed to get a few things under the wire.
Merry Christmas Steve! I love this movie, have read books about Woolcott, love Monty, love Bette. Love you!
Hooray! I'm the luckiest TOQ on the planet! happy Holidays!
One of my favorites! Merry Christmas everyone!
And to you as well! Happy Holidays!
Merry merry Christmas Steve and Johnny. I like this movie. A lot. I just watched My Reputation with Barbara Stanwyck on TCM a few hours ago. TY buddy for your vids and your reviews this past year that sure do bring me a ton of laughs, this year and in previous years. Best of 2024 to you sir. I have to say, you do look mahvelous. 🥰👍👍
I appreciayte you're saying so, on all counts! Many thanks! Hapopy Holidays!
Steve.. Your Bette Davis is so spot on!!!!!
Many thanks! So glad you like it...don't tell Bette! Happy Holidays!
Woolcott was a real piece of work, but at least he gave us Sheridan Whiteside and Waldo Lydecker. The background info was great - I never knew that Anne Sheridan's character was based on Gertrude Lawrence. I loved " She knew they'd be watching Cary Grant. " Merry Christmas!
Bette didn't like a man having more focus than she did. She was always more generous with her female co-stars.
Clifton Webb played Waldo Lydecker.
One of my favs! Steve you are a national treasure- Merry Christmas!
Oh, thank you! Much appreciated!
Steve...I have already watched this film twice this Christmas season ....it NEVER gets old....hope you and Johnny have a FaBuLoUs and Merry Christmas🌲❄☃☃❄
And the same to you! Peace On Earth!
Another great review of a terrific film I haven't seen in too long a time. Did you know Mary Wickes was the live action model for Disney's Cruella Deville? They filmed her acting the part, then rotoscoped over her.
Thanks for watching! I love Mary !!!
I just remembered I've seen Mary Wickes in so many things but never knew her name! (I just saw her in an episode of I Love Lucy: "The Ballet" and in the 1994 version of Little Women w/Winona Ryder). Thank you so much for your great reviews and the enjoyment you bring to so many people. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays and a wonderful New Year to you, Johnny and everyone at TOQATM!

How fun it would be to spend an evening with you talking about all these wonderful movies! You are so much fun! You should be the host of TCM!
Thanks you SO much! I hope you have wonderful holidays! Steve
OMG! I just watched this the other day. I love it and it’s in my library. It is a great movie. There was a lot of drama on set of this picture. Betty did not want him to play that part and she said she was not at all happy doing this picture But said she was glad it was a hit but of course because that added to her contract $$$ buut amazingly I think she did a great job. I actually liked her hair done like that as it really portrayed her as little miss goody, two shoes 😜As well as Ann. It’s just a great Christmas movie right up there with Christmas in Connecticut. You both have a wonderful holiday and can you believe it’s going to be 2024……Cheers ..Brian
I cannot believe it, however , my mirror constantly reminds me. LOL! Thanks so much for watching and Happy Holidays! Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ don’t believe the mirror. You will always be young. Like Cary says in Bishops Wife “those who grow old were BORN old “ You will always be young!!!
One of my favorites. Thanks, Steve, for deepening the pleasure by telling who some of the characters were based on. Makes it even more fun. You're looking wonderful❣ As always, I'm sending love from San Diego, California. God bless you, Lovely Fellow❣❣

Ann Sheridan is two of the "high points" of the movie.
She is so sexy and fun!
Steve, you always have so many great backstories! There's a lot here I hadn't heard before. Love this movie.
Good! Mission accomplished!
Ann Sheridan and the sarcophagus. One of my all-time favorite scenes! I don't have the tape anymore, but I always wait for that scene on TV. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays and Seasons Greetings, Steve and company.
That scene bothers me. All I can think of is that they'll eventually open it and she will have suffocated...I know, I know...but still.... Happy Holidays!
Merry Christmas, Steve! And thanks for another year of wonderful reviews! 😘
My pleasure. Thanks for watching! Happy Holidays!
I love this movie! A wonderful cast, and agreeing with Steve, Bette’s hairstylist should have been shot for making her look so ditzy! The happiest of holidays to you both, and bring on more movie gems in the New Year 🎉❤😊
I used to think her hairdos were a form of revenge buy the make-up and hair departments for the havoc she often created during the shooting of her films. LOL!
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ So sorry to invade the comments (I do read them, lol). But I have always thought the same about the hairstyles for her. Oh she was beautiful, and the film, 'Something About Eve', actually captured that with her hair style, then. ❤
Love this movie. One of my favorite Bette Davis roles (along with The Corn is Green and All About Eve) because she shows a vulnerable side that we don't get to see too often. Reginald Gardiner is also one of my favorite actors. Love the hand buttons on Ms. Sheridan's dress! I also like the scene where the radio people are setting up for the broadcast and one of the men spots Ann Sheridan, she gives him a little smile, and he trips over something. Thank you for the review; fabulous as always.
LOL! I love that bit too. It's little things/reaxctions like that that make the movie for me! There's alway so uch goping on here and so much that you don't pick up on until successive viewings. Thanks for watching! Viva Ann Sheridan!!! Steve
Merry Christmas to you, Johnny and everyone who helps bring us these videos! Fantastic and informative as always. May we have many more Christmas with your reviews and great charisma.
Here's to us who love the movies!
You’re absolutely correct about Ann Sheridan. She could play anything, and she could sing, too. She outshines Bette Davis in this movie, while getting the roles Bette Davis turned down at Warner Brothers. She was very underapppreciated.
I think so too. I always though she should have been nominated for " Kings Row". She's superb.
I knew a Bette impression was coming! *That* you can't beat!
LOL! Bette would probably want to...witha shaprp stick! LOL! Hope you had nice holidays! Thanks so much! Happy New Year! Here's to the movie lovers!!! Steve
Bette Davis is my favorite actress!!!

What a treasure you did a review of “The Man Who Came to
Dinner”! Just watched this other day for umpteenth time.😀 Watch every year around this time, such a good movie can’t top Mary Wickes, the dialogue and “Blossom Girl” Thanks so much!!
Merry Christmas!
(Any chance you can review Joan Crawford “When Ladies Meet”? Not her greatest, but would really get a laugh out of your Spring Byington startled screams imitation during the thunderstorm 😂😂)
"When Ladies Meet" is on my "To Do' list,. Try and catch th earlier pre-code '30's version with Ann Harding, Myrna Loy and Alice Btrady in the Spring Byington role...Spring originated it on Broadway and, in my opinion, is better. But otherwise I prefer the earlier version of the film. Happy Holidays.

Hilarious review as per usual. I’ve watched this great movie untold times. Terrific cast and one of my favorites, Jimmy Durante. A true gem. Merry Christmas everybody.
Happy Holidays to you too!
Great pick, Steve. I’ve always been a big fan of Monte Woolley and this film. I also loved The Pied Piper and wish it would show up on TV again. I also liked Bette Davis in this. My aunt managed the Loews Kings theater in Brooklyn and I remember looking at a picture she had under the glass top on her desk of her with Bette Davis and Olivia de Havilland when they were at the theater for the premier of Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thanks for keeping cinema alive.

Mine too! I love "The Bishop's Wife"
of all the xmas movies - of all the bette davis movies - .. and I am a fan of both - I always pondered why I was so resistant to this particular film. It never was one that I suggested to people, but it was there amongst all the best... YOUR review and posting of the video essay makes me think - maybe it was the hair! lol - and I LOVE Bette - even taught a class at Facets - included were films I thought were underrated or appreciated from Bett's filmography. The Catered Affair - would love to see what you thought of it! I am so appreciative of your channel and your love of film! thank you again for all that you bring... jw
Thank you for watching. The way you felt about "The Man Wgho Came To Dinner" is the way I feel about " The Catered Affair". Bette drives me crazy, trying to do an imitation of Thelma Ritter, who had created the role on television and should have done the movie. Oh well, different strokes...thanks for watching and have a terrfic hioliday! Steve
No one does Bette better than Steve! lol 😊
Shhhhhh, she might hear you! Thanks so much and have lovely holidays!
Wishing you the Merriest of Christmases and the Happiest of New Years from my house to yours. We're under a bad inversion here and its gray and grim, but it's always a sunny day with the latest review from the Divine Tired Old Queen, All hail!
This is a fabulous choice for this season, you always pick my favorites. And no matter how may times I've watched them you always find a new facet I've never really seen before. You're always not only fun but educational. (BTW If I recall correctly, despite the title, isn't "June Bride" also set at Xmas?)
I'd love to know if you've ever heard of an old time radio comedy called "The Magnificent Montague", written for Woolley in the early 50's?
Thanks again for the sunshine.
I never heard of "the Magnificent Montague", but I'll bet its's fun! He was a rascal! Thank you for the delightyful compliments and I hope you have a lovely holiday!
I really liked this film. Seemed like a wonderful transition from stage to screen. Monty Wooley was a great choice doing his original role. These productions gave many audiences a chance to experience that play in a Theater they would normally not have. By the way everyone go see at least one or two plays out there and keep it going.
I totally agree!! Keep live theatre alive, well and prospering in the New Year! Thanks for the sound advice and for watching! Best Wishes; Steve

Gr8 review. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this movie. Btw, your Bette Davis impressions kill me every time. 🤣🤣🤣. Merry Christmas! 🎁🎄☃️
Thanks so much! Happy Holidays!
Steve - one of my favorite films, AND one of my favorite TOQATM reviews EVER!!!!! I love your Bette Davis impression; I think you may be channeling Charles Pierce!!!! The Christmas holidays are not a happy time for me and watching your review really gave me several good laughs! Merry Christmas to you!
I'm so glad!! This made my morning! I love the holidays and over the years, the movies have molded me that way. I love the music, the lights and the sweet melancholy. There are certain films that bring me exactly what I want to feel at this time of year, this is one and "The Bishop's Wife" and " A Christmas Carol " with Alistair Sim are two others. I hope you have lovely holidays and thanks so much for watching! Best Wishes; Steve
I love you upload more videos now, so we won't have to wait that long, no long gaps in between. Happy one !
Good! Enjoy! Happyt Holidays! Steve
Thank you Steve.....what a wonderful Christmas gift...a brand new movie review from you...by the way I've always been a fan of Mary Wicks...happy holidays!!
Me too. She added something wonderful to everything she was in.
Thanks Steve...appreciate you liked my appreciation for Mary Wicks...happy new year honey....I'm watching one of my fav films "Postcards from the Edge"...I think it was Mary's last appearance...two minutes of film playing Meryl's grandmother....playing Shirley's Mum and Mary has two memorable minutes...I always watch for it ...bless Mike Nichols...best to you for 2024 :)
