Those spencers are quite fantastical. Would women have actually worn the kinds of clothing shown on fashion plates, or were they more like modern high fashion magazines and runway shows where the majority of clothing is intended to be an art project rather than a usable piece of clothing?
Kirsten Paff I’ve never seen a surviving Spencer exactly like these styles but I think they probably were worn as a lot of the existing ones are quite light weight and decorated I think they where a good way of showing off when wearing a plain white dress.
This reminds me of my childhood! I had an aunt who was a wiz with her crotchet needles, had loads of yarn, and my sisters and cousins used to sit with her to make huge Pom poms for our roller skates. Your new spencer is so beautiful! Also, I thought the video speed was perfect.
Denise M pom-poms on roller skates sound excellent. I always planned to make a giant pom-pom as a cushion for a friend of mine maybe I should do that now.
Thank You for sharing your technique with us. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing your process and learning how to make pom-poms. The spencer is absolutely stunning! Whomever it belongs to is one lucky lady.
Miss Constance, you make it look so easy, and your videos are never boring! They are great, you have a way of presenting the subjects that is utterly fascinating. Please do more! I can't wait to see what's next. I loved the pom Poms, and I'm going to try and make some. I don't have anything to put them on yet. But someday, I will.
Jackie James hello I’m glad you liked the video, you could make some lovely pom-poms and string then together like bunting I did that for a friends wedding a few years ago. Or sew them onto a hat to make it a bobble hat I love a pom-pom especially on a beret.
@@stanceymackenzie thanks for the great ideas. I'm going to make a couple and put them on a knit draw string bag I have. I think they will look good and give the bag a different look as well.
Enjoyed that, thank you. My granny showed me to use a tiny bit of steam from the kettle if I was making a 100% will yarn to finish the pompom if gives a fluffier finish. My granny would be approximately 130 if she was still alive.
Yes! I love pom-poms and have always had trouble wrapping my head around how to make them. Now I know exactly how I'm going to make my pom-poms for my 1880s parasol when the time comes!
Tip: the larger the inner circle is relative to the outer one, the denser the pom-pom can be, but if you make the ring _too_ narrow you risk it tearing too early.
Harleigh thank you. I have speeded up some of the work and edited out all the times I get really tangled or drop stuff. I’ll have to do a live video one day so you can all see how clumsy I am in real life.
Lovely Constance! I have made large pom poms many times, but always wondered how to make much smaller ones, but using a darning needle and card looks to do the trick nicely!
@@stanceymackenzie I hactually have these little plastic devices for making large pom poms that makes them SUPER quick, I can pull the yarn right from the skein! But they didn't come this small so I was trying to work out how to do it but this looks to be the thing!
This brings back memories! We used to make pom-poms in Kindergarden and sewed them onto pillows and stuff. I actually never seen Pom-poms on clothes before (except on Harlequins), but the do look great! Do you also make tassels yourself?
Sandra Schütz hello, I remember being taught to make them when I was little too. They a great fun. The regency era did quite like pom-poms as trim usually quite small. I think that tassels were probably more common. 19th century knitwear is sometimes decorated with them too. I do make the odd tassel as well
I can't help but think how much those tails and pom poms would have delighted cats
Do I know how to make pom-poms? Yes. Did I watch this anyway? Also yes. But I did learn how delightful spencers are, which is very good.
Love that you’re on RUclips now, i absolutely love your work, can’t wait to see more projects ;)
Florencia Mondaca thank you very much. Is there anything in particular you would like to see filmed or made?!
Constance MacKenzie anything you like, but i would like to see more videos about little details like that

Lisa Hodges that is excellent advice I use my iron as is semi industrial
i definitely have gone too far when trimming pompoms lol. i love the tails on the spencer, reminds me of a butterfly
Those pom-poms are just adorable! I really like this whole ensemble. It’s lovely!
Thank you.
Thank you for sharing ❤
This is just so lovely! I love that sleeve!
Thank you

Brandon McKinney excellent I’m glad to hear it.
Very pretty. Thanks for the tutorial also!
Thank you very much.
It's a beautiful spencer! And the pom poms match very well!
P0nyl0ve thank you very much.

I love them! And also the Spencer!! Those tails are awesome!!!
Costuming Drama thank you.
It is so nice watching you work, it's so smooth and seamless. My hands do not move nearly that fast out of fear of tangling my thread.

@@stanceymackenzie haha excited for that day!
That is absolutely magnificent!!!!💕💕💕
Valerie Bartz thank you very much.
Lovley. The tricky part is, as you said, when to stop trimming.
ambrosiata I did just keep trimming on all of them until they went in the post
Constance I adore your old style black scissors that you used to cut the wool for the pom poms, they're so cute!
Brissy Girl thank you. They are called snips I think sometimes advertised at gardeners too.
Lovely Constance! I have made large pom poms many times, but always wondered how to make much smaller ones, but using a darning needle and card looks to do the trick nicely!
Emily Donnelly yes smaller ones are fiddly but quicker to make.

Yet another great video and I'm already looking forward to the next one! Perhaps something to do with ruffs? *fingers crossed*
Sofia Uhlmann I’m glad you enjoyed it. Are you interested in the whole process of ruffs or just the starch and setting?
@@stanceymackenzie the whole process! I tried to make one once and failed in the most glorious way...
