Lunara Hunter Sure! As I understand it, most any froth is the result of built up carbon dioxide in the drink. In the case of beer and cider, this is a biproduct of the fermentation process that makes them alcoholic. In the case of soda, it is added to the drink as part of a separate process. Similar result, but different processes to get there.
Honestly, I don't feel that the moral was stick with tradition. When I watched this episode, I thought the moral was quality over quantity. Yes the apples made cider the traditional way, but Granny Smith showed their refusal to sacrifice quality to make more cider. She showed integrity and dedication to making a good product. I believe that THAT is the moral. Maybe there was an undertone of traditionalism, but I think the main lesson was to have the pride and integrity to keep doing something that you do well to the best of your ability.
Revkor They gave themselves a bad rep when they made all that crappy cider and the townsponies probably didn't want to buy anything the machine made, considering even the cider they did make was made with apple family apples.
Yes it could have, but Flim and Flam refused to offer better. When the apple family refuse the deal they immediately decide they're going to be competitors instead of doing this business thingy called "negotiating."
***** So the epiode cannot teach a moral if the main char is right about something? The moral was not that AJ didn't learn anything but what she's known all along.
Maybe if the whole town got sick of Flim and Flam's shit and helped the Apple Family, or if the the machine broke down and started forcing crap into the cider would the moral make sense. Otherwise, it's just a contrived scenario making the FFB's stupidity in the end outweigh the Apple Family's stupidity.
ZombiiChixx I guess there are a few competitors y’know. And I have a couple of things: the smile song. A glass of water. And pinkies season 6 hearthswarming song. (Please don’t kill me for sharing my opinions...)
There's also the fact that the stake Applejack mentions in the business deal ("we'll lose sweet apple acres if we agree to this") is mathematically impossible. IIRC, The machine produces cider at 4 times the rate of the Apples, so the 75/25 split would've left them with exactly as much cash as they were making before. And if they also pitch in and make cider the old-fashioned way, they'll be making MORE, assuming that the town doesn't run out of cash before they run out of cider (doubtful, given how much they seem to love the stuff). But if this is something they do every year to keep themselves afloat, they'll make enough for the cider season to be worth it. That's kind of a problem since that deal is the whole justification for Flim and Flam being considered scam artists by the rest of the cast. Yeah, they're full of themselves and they try to sell the bad cider later, but up until that point the hatred directed towards them is the result of bad math.
The bet was only for "the exclusive right to sell cider in Ponyville". The farm was never mentioned in the wager so the property would have still belonged to the Apple Family even after losing. You should have taken the last point away with that.
Following traditions can be just as important as stopping them. I can't stand when an episode shoe-horns a "one is always more important than the other" message. There was no reason the episode couldn't have ended with doing both methods. The teams would've created more than enough cider doing that.
TheRealPearl Pinkie's a part animal, so it wouldn't be surprising to find out she drinks a lot at more adult parties off screen, and Dash never gets any so was very upset when she finally did only to loose it.

something that doesn't make any sense, is that the Flim Flam brothers can NOT threaten the Apple family. They need apples to make their cider, and the apple family holds the commerce monopoly on the entire region. The nearest Apple crops are in Applelooza, which is too far for the flim flam brothers to sell their cider in a way that makes a competition against Applejack, so in reality, they can either work in a fair contract, or leave.
I know the hit point sound effects are from Ace Attorney, but what sounds are they? Also what character do you use to represent the stars, because it doesn't look like a normal asterisk.
Admittedly, this is my least favorite episode. Less than ALL of the infamous episodes. 1. I hate character torment episodes(Rainbow Dash being tortured for no reason in this case) 2. The plot actually felt forced with Granny Smith just challenging with nothing to gain 3. The Flim Flam brothers imo are not bad enough to really root for the good guys 4. Traditional vs New episodes are never really good imo(the only one close to that kinda episode I've seen was a pre-movie Spongebob episode where Spongebob faced Zeus in who could create more Krabby Patties)
+Randall Williams (The Shoto) Actually Rainbow Dash does get her cider at the end. Maybe but Granny has been known to do that in the past. It's the threat of losing their farm to make you root for them. They aren't supposed to be evil. It actually does it very well because it says their business practices are bad not their product. When granny tastes it it's actually really good.
marinus18 They're not evil, but the plot for me is forced for the most part. The Apple family isn't losing anyone or anything by not making the deal, and they're not gaining anything by winning. Also, yea they're not bad guys which is actually kind of a problem. They don't give much to root against. I actually rooted for them because of how stupid Granny's decision was
It's pride, pkain and simple. That's why Granny Smith wouldn't back down, too prideful to ignore their taunts. Same reason as why Applejack wouldn't ask for help in Applebuck Season, her pride got in the way. It, seems to be an Apple family thing, massive pride that they can't shove aside.
Wow, it's like Applejack knew everything that happened in this episode was bullshit and wished Flim and Flam never showed up with their thingamajig. That "moral" was funny though. XD
Your critiques were all correct. In fact, I'd argue you weren't tough enough on the Apples' poor business sense. Regardless, I still like this episode. It's not M.A Larson's worst by any stretch; that distinction belongs to either "It's About Time" or "Magical Mystery Cure", though MMC at least has an _excuse_ for being awful (corporate mandate).
2:18 the brother didn't want to see steve to the apple family. The twin brothers attempt to broker a deal with the Apple Family, who will supply them with their delicious apples, and they will sell the cider under the Flim Flam brothers name. They call for a 75-25 split in profits in their favor and the bothers would keep the 75. Applejack reminds the others that their cider profits keep the family business afloat during the winter months; if they were to accept, they would lose the farm.
Flim and Flam were offering to make the cider with their machine, not trying to sell it. Also they were betting on who could sell cider in Ponyville and if the Apple family couldn't sell cider they'd go bankrupt. This makes more sense as the Apple family can't prevent Flim and Flam selling cider other than through this bet.
I have to correct you on one thing, Enter. "Nothing to gain." How about keeping their business? AJ said that they make most of their winter money off cider, and if they have competition, they'd lose profits, and thus, go bankrupt and lose the farm. I already had a slight dislike for Rainbow Dash from what I've watched so far, and the opening to this episode didn't help her at all. Mr. Enter, why did you not deduct points for her Dialogue as they're flying there? Saying things like "I'll buy all I want so she can't have any" and "Maybe i'll get one and save it for later and drink it drop by drop while she watches." I mean DAYUM. I knew she was a showoff and a bit of a hothead, but that is just straight up being an asshole! Besides, businesses work on a first-come, first-served basis. If you wanted it THAT badly, you should've camped out like Pinkie (and a lot of the others) did. It's like the midnight release of a new game, or sales on Black Friday. She makes it worse by at first not caring that the Apples will lose their farm if the Brothers win, just wanting some cider, regardless of how good or bad it was (which backfires on the bros later) but at least she helps out in the end. Although, I have to give AJ some flack here too. Part of my family is farmers, and we know a lot of farmers. We have a garden, and whatever we don't eat, we sell, or give to our friends and family. Applejack, you knew Rainbow would want some cider, so you should've saved her a cup or two. You should've done that for all of the main cast. I know business is business, but if it's reserved, and they're still willing to pay, you're not out any money for it. Also, Flam is voiced by Scott McNeil, the voice of Duo Maxwell from Gundam Wing, Jetfire from Transformers Armada, and Dinobot, Rattrap, Silverbolt, and Waspinator from Beast Wars. This guy has talent.
People kept calling the Flim Flam Brother competition... except they weren't competition at all. They had a machine that could make cider... and zero apples. If the Apple Family didn't sell them apples... then they had no product. Just a very specialized machine that could not fulfill it's purpose. Even today, I don't believe there's a single mention of any other apple orchard in Ponyvillle (or indeed, outside of Apple Family control regardless of location). They weren't competition. They were con-artists who got an old lady hot-headed and proud enough to agree to a pointless bet that would ruin her life if she lost. Honestly, this makes them the most diabolical pony-villains in the series to date (unless you count Sombra, but he barely qualifies as a character).
They were competition, they explicitly said they were going to go buy apples to use with the machine. As for being con artists, not in this episode, they were cutthroat but legitimate business men and inventors. There was no lie. They invented the machine, made it, and were trying to use it legitimately to make money. In later episodes they are flanderized into con artists because most people are to simpleminded to notice the key differences (like the person I'm replying to.)
The only thing I really hated about this episode was seeing Pinkie Pie being a total dick and seeing Rainbow Dash in total agony. It goes against Pinkie's character, and I was never too big a fan of character torture porn episodes, which was the main problem with a lot of Spongebob episodes. Other than that, I can't really hate this episode, just because of that damn Flim and Flam song. It's just so catchy.
I don't remember where but another reviewer explained the whole percentage issue to show that the Apple family can't math. If the Super Speedy Cider Squeezy worked 3x faster then the Apples did, then in truth they would only loose 25% profit. They could then make their cider the old fashioned way and sell it to rich ponies as all natural and homemade, charging twice as much, thus make more profit then what they made before.
This is actually my favorite episode. I love the song, and I love the Flim Flam Brothers as over the top characters go. they're energized, over confident, and a lot of fun. I think the mean spirited joke with Rainbow Dash, and a lot of the forced story actually helps the atmosphere of this episode, which tends towards an almost Broadway play, as it mostly all takes place in the same location, and is more focused on the obvious snake-oil salesmen. Taken in terms of a more logical story, sure, maybe you can be offended by it, but the atmosphere giving it the stage play feel, I think, lends itself to not taking itself quite as seriously.
Hey Apple Family, do what most stadiums do (or at least the stadiums I've seen), and only give ponies a limit of 2 mugs of cider. You won't run out as quickly and you won't feed anypony's demon or anypony's habit.
I dont know-this episode is a real mixed bag, but I think that more comes from the fact that even though the stakes are really really REALLY high, it felt underwhelming at the same time.
Hey, just a correction: they didn't have nothing to lose. They weren't giving up the rights to the farm if they lost, they were fighting to force the other one not to sell in the town again because otherwise Flim and Flam would run them out of business. And that's why they left at the end, because the exclusive rights were suddenly worth jack shit because everyone hated them.
Honestly, I think the main reason I like this episode even at all is the Flim Flam Brothers themselves and the song they sing (which is both a fun exposition song and a cute tribute to The Music Man). I just kind of enjoy how they're villains that are more realistic in the sense that they're not evil or out to cause trouble but they're just normal ponies trying to make a profit. It also helps that I'm a pretty big fan of both of their voice actors: Sam Vincent (Double D in Ed, Edd n Eddy) and Scott McNeil (Dr. Wily/Proto Man in the Mega Man animated series and Wolverine in X-Men Evolution). It's very rare that either of these two turn in a performance that I don't find likable and I personally think they make a fantastic duo here. But yeah, Flim Flam Brothers and their song aside, I find this episode to be kinda "meh".
In Applejack's defense, I think at least one of the lessons was to accept a friend's help when you need it, which was one that she had already learned in season one, so it makes sense that she wouldn't have to learn that in this episode.
This episode annoys me so much. Applejack doesn't even try to negotiate a deal, ignores the benefits, CHEATS IN THE COMPETITION - 'honourary family members my ass' - then ends it with 'I was right all along!' just annoys me so much.
Actually, there's another possibility. The Apples are at their peak, which is at just the moment before they start producing their own alcohol. It'll be the tastiest apple you've ever eaten. Granted, getting them at that proper stage is rough, but since they run an apple orchard, i'm sure they know they time in which they have the most flavor. The apples they threw away, horses in real life would still eat them. If the alcohol was true, they would have allowed the cider to ferment after they won
I love the song Flim and Flam sing. And secondly, is Granny's aversion to being called chicken an homage to Back to the Future (Parts II and III, not the first)?
They still have their traditions to hold up. Applejack trying to convince the apple family to accept their offer actually would have made a better plot than some con artists trying to take the farm.
Traditions are well and good until they start to hurt you. And seeing as they never make enough cider to meet demand, I'd say it's hurting. But I do agree that it would have made a better episode and Flim and Flam could have become regular characters.
The way I can get through the mean-spirited torture of Rainbow Dash in this episode is through my own personal belief that Rarity had told Pinkie that Rainbow went against her element of loyalty by abandoning them in The Last Roundup and that Rarity convinced Pinkie into doing this out of revenge on her part.
***** It was shown at the beginning of the episode that Rainbow Dash crashed while doing a stunt. Rarity was watching with the other ponies, so she couldn't have caused it.
Surely Applejack is one of rainbows best friends, so why couldn't AJ just save her a cup that makes so much more sense. Or have a ticket system to make sure everypony gets some. This episode is infuriating for me but the song almost makes up for it.
I think this episode is supposed to have some elements from the story of John Henry, I didn't realize it until watching this review. Think about it, a regular person is do honest work than a machine comes along to replace it since it doesn't get tired and is more efficient. The machine ends up losing because of good old fashioned man power. But instead of one man doing this it is a small group of people, and it helps because horses are very strong animals and are much stronger than humans. I wouldn't say it's a bad episode but it's not a great episode.
to me, the problem with the apple family (aj and granny smith in particular) was that there wasn't any modesty in their characters. also, the episode was pretty much Neptune's Spatula, mixed with John Henry, and the moral of Selling Out, and because of that, was very predictable.
Everyone, even Netflix seems to oversimplify the deal. It wasn't a direct bet for the farm, it was for exclusivity rights for the cider sales. And without those cider sales, the apples would lose the farm. If they didn't make the bet, film and flam would seriously cut into their profits, and again, ruin the apples. The scenario is basically that the apples can only stay in business if the flimflam brothers leave altogether.
I think Applejack was completely justified in not being stubborn here. Her family business, and on some level, her family's lives were at stake. She may be stubborn, but she's not so stubborn that she'd continue to fight a battle this important that she knows she can't win if it's within the rules to have help.
My lord! You really know how to make me feel like I have a terrible taste in episodes. I for one thought this episode was great. I really enjoyed it. Possibly due to my Apple Family bias... I'm one of the few that actually likes them so... Flim & Flam were really fun antagonists and the song was really damn good and I think their character designs were absolutely fabulous. I know you're the critic so your opinion has more substance, but I would never give this episode 3 stars. I'd give it 4. So I suppose this is another episode for the underrated list...
Wow the title is a mouthful. This episode is OK. Definitely one of, if not, M.A. Larson's weakest episode. I enjoyed the competition and some smaller moments are great. Flim and Flam are enjoyable villians. But, the mean spirited humor can bother me a bit, the anti moral isn't good, I'm not a fan of the song, and I don't like Pinkie in the episode. But if this is the weakest M.A. Larson has done on this show, then it shows how awesome he was as a writer on this show, which I do hope he returns (yes I know Fame and Misfortune credited M.A. Larson as writer, but he confirmed it was just the concept that was him, and that he didn't write it). 3 Out of 5 Stars Orange So Far:57/130
now on the bigger arguments that the 6 are older is from this episode as well, but you're forgetting that there are many countries that have different drinking ages, including Canada, which have pointed out that there drinking age is 17, and sent ponies are small horses which are horses can barely get drunk at certain number of tags, I'm pretty sure that they have a lower drinking age. Continue with review
My question... where would they getting the apples in order to actually compete? The Apples own all of the apples in PonyVille. Did they have to go out of town every night to get apples for more cider? Imagine the gas prices...
So in other words, Mr. Enter, to paraphrase a line from your Ball of Revenge review: "If Charlotte Fullerton can have a shining gem, then M.A. Larson can have a steaming turd."
You're right. Honestly keeping tradition even if it means being counterproductive is just.... stupid. Just a downright stupid moral. I mean the tradition is to keep producing cider why does it matter how it's done? I mean at least in this case it's justified since The Flim Flam brothers were gonna take most of the profit
This score system seems kind of... odd... it implies that as long as an episode does good things as often as it pisses you off, it gets a perfect score.
The episode would have worked a lot better, if the ponies would got angry at the Apple Family, because they could not supply enough cider but still rejected the Flimflam Brother's help.
Great review, but I disagree with you on the whole tradition front. Yes, the SSCS6K machine is faster, and yes, tradition does often slow down progress. But that shouldn't necessarily mean that you throw out tradition just because something comes along that would make things go faster or smoother. For example, my parents bake me a particular chocolate cake every year for my birthday, like they do for my siblings. It would be more efficient and probably cheaper to just buy a cake from the store, but we choose instead to keep the tradition of baking the cake for each person's birthday. I agree that some traditions you might feel obliged to follow for no good reason, like the rule of no magic for Winter Wrap-Up (which underutilizes roughly a third of the population). However, traditions like hand making cake or cider help to commemorate the past, as well as serving as a sign of care for the product that you produce
+CPCoulterTweedles I agree, but the episode could've illustrated this better. The moral would've been better served if the machine had poor quality control from the get-go; that would've made the point more realistically.
"Dear Princess Celestia, I wanted to share my thoughts with you.... I didn't learn anything. I was right all along."
Best moral ever.
I used it as my senior quote for high school.
Dear princess Celestia. Today I learned that with a large enough influx of unpaid labour you can offset the benefits of mechanisation and maintain your customer screwing monopoly.

"I didn't learn anything" that made me laugh so hard
It's definitely alcoholic. Only alcoholic cider has a froth.

***** i take it as both. except 1, its not a good moral, and 2, i only giggled a bit

ZenoDovahkiin doesn't that technically make her a smart-ass

I love that Apple Bloom is illegally serving alcohol.
Apple cider doesn't foam like that unless there's alcohol in it. It HAS to be hard cider.
+notoriouswhitemoth So does that make all the residents of Ponyville alcoholics, (especially Pinkie and Dash)?
+Vince Shadell I don't think drinkinf one mug of hard cider a year constitutes a fundamental change to someone's brain chemistry.
notoriouswhitemoth Pinky was carrying arms full of it, and Dash was so desperate to get some cider that she ate the dirt that had cider spilled on it.
TheRealPearl Pinkie's a part animal, so it wouldn't be surprising to find out she drinks a lot at more adult parties off screen, and Dash never gets any so was very upset when she finally did only to loose it.

And you care enough to comment that because...?
Hiền Phạm how?
+Randall Williams (The Shoto)
Actually Rainbow Dash does get her cider at the end.
I actually rooted for them because of how stupid Granny's decision was
Yes :3
It's pride, pkain and simple. That's why Granny Smith wouldn't back down, too prideful to ignore their taunts.
Same reason as why Applejack wouldn't ask for help in Applebuck Season, her pride got in the way. It, seems to be an Apple family thing, massive pride that they can't shove aside.
super speedy cider squeezy 6000 is on my personal spotify playlist
i like it too much
+valcano You can never like it enough. Trust me.

Applejack reminds the others that their cider profits keep the family business afloat during the winter months; if they were to accept, they would lose the farm.
at that percentage ratio yes. but if they moved it 60/40 both would win.
1:30 - 1:38
The Sash-Ringing... the Trash-Singing... Mash-Flinging... The Flash-Stringing, Ringing, The Cr-Crash-Dinging, da...
The song reminds me of "Ya Got Trouble" from Music Man.
That's the point.
Subtext: Consumers waiting for Apple product releases.
It took 5,999 attempts to come up with 'Steve.'
i think cider is only a way of getting alcohol past the censor.
Or just stockpile cider.
OMG friends do tease each other in real life. Not all teasing is hurtful.
Is the SSCS 6000 powered by steam, electricity, or magic?
...yes
I dont know-this episode is a real mixed bag, but I think that more comes from the fact that even though the stakes are really really REALLY high, it felt underwhelming at the same time.
Hey, just a correction: they didn't have nothing to lose. They weren't giving up the rights to the farm if they lost, they were fighting to force the other one not to sell in the town again because otherwise Flim and Flam would run them out of business. And that's why they left at the end, because the exclusive rights were suddenly worth jack shit because everyone hated them.
Just call it the froggy apple crumple thumbkin.
Applejack doesn't even try to negotiate a deal, ignores the benefits, CHEATS IN THE COMPETITION -
'honourary family members my ass' - then ends it with 'I was right all along!' just annoys me so much.
So is this the first episode you started using the points system in?
I'm still convinced the Flimflam Brothers are secretly the Crimson Twins from G.I. Joe.
Tomax & Xamot live again.
then why is apple bloom there serving it huh
Actually, there's another possibility. The Apples are at their peak, which is at just the moment before they start producing their own alcohol. It'll be the tastiest apple you've ever eaten. Granted, getting them at that proper stage is rough, but since they run an apple orchard, i'm sure they know they time in which they have the most flavor. The apples they threw away, horses in real life would still eat them. If the alcohol was true, they would have allowed the cider to ferment after they won
Spike's face at 0:08 is great
I love the song Flim and Flam sing. And secondly, is Granny's aversion to being called chicken an homage to Back to the Future (Parts II and III, not the first)?
The Apples could have just negotiated a better deal....
Banchoking Well, actually, it's kind of their farm now. After all, they won the contest.
I think AJ was fine with getting help from others this episode, because she couldn't afford not to.
why did you call it steve
+Angelise Ambrose Super Speedy Cider Sqeezy 6000 is hard to say
The way I can get through the mean-spirited torture of Rainbow Dash in this episode is through my own personal belief that Rarity had told Pinkie that Rainbow went against her element of loyalty by abandoning them in The Last Roundup and that Rarity convinced Pinkie into doing this out of revenge on her part.
That actually makes sense. Rarity did say at the end of The Last Roundup that she'd get back at Rainbow Dash.
***** It was shown at the beginning of the episode that Rainbow Dash crashed while doing a stunt. Rarity was watching with the other ponies, so she couldn't have caused it.
"Screw it! I'm calling it Steve!"
From now on, I will call the Super Speedy Cider Sqeezy that. xD
THE STEAVE CAN DO ANYTHING
Can it turn into a transformer? Because if so, SOLD
1:00 you have probably never been to kansas city in the fall
Screw it, I’m calling it Steve killed me.
1:36
Screw it, I'm calling it Steve
to me, the problem with the apple family (aj and granny smith in particular) was that there wasn't any modesty in their characters. also, the episode was pretty much Neptune's Spatula, mixed with John Henry, and the moral of Selling Out, and because of that, was very predictable.
WAIT
This is a Canadian show?
American/Canadian
3 Out of 5 Stars

So Far:57/130
I love Flim and Flam so much. They are The Music Man…squee
The Flim Flam brothers are voiced by Sam Vincent (Double D) and Scott McNeil (Half the cast of Beast Wars)
This episode of MLP is the only one feeling like it was written by Max Gillardi.
Fun Fact: Flam is voiced by Double D from Ed Edd n Eddy
You mean Sam Vincent. That's the voice actor's name.
And it's actually Flim.
Mei Lu oh right Sam Vincent. Oh and it is Flim
now on the bigger arguments that the 6 are older is from this episode as well, but you're forgetting that there are many countries that have different drinking ages, including Canada, which have pointed out that there drinking age is 17, and sent ponies are small horses which are horses can barely get drunk at certain number of tags, I'm pretty sure that they have a lower drinking age. Continue with review
Anyone realize that the "steam" is a reference to the steam drill from the classic Tall tale John Henry?
My question... where would they getting the apples in order to actually compete? The Apples own all of the apples in PonyVille. Did they have to go out of town every night to get apples for more cider? Imagine the gas prices...
Steve? Really? Did you really just take a page out of over the hedge?
PS: you need to review that movie some day.
So in other words, Mr. Enter, to paraphrase a line from your Ball of Revenge review:
"If Charlotte Fullerton can have a shining gem, then M.A.
Mr.Enter: Screw it I'll call it steve!
Me:lol
Is mlp a Canadian show?
I really liked this episode actually
will flim and flam come back for revenge?
Am i the only one that thinks this song sounds like something out of "The music man?"
+Marisa Wolfanger I think it was intentional.
turn on the closed captioning for a good laugh!!! i am dying reading this stuff. xD
phim and phlam remind me of sylvester mcmonkey mcbean from "The Sneetches" and their song reminds me of "The Music Man" song Ya Got Trouble.
the name of this episode took me months to remember the name of this episode, until then i just called it "Super Speedy 6000"
I'm pretty sure this episode is based of the Legend of John Henry
Something I find kind of funny about this review is that most of the points that were taken away were because of RD "abuse". And Steve is awesome
Another point in the favor of the cider being alcoholic is that cider doesn't foam unless it has alcohol
Poor Rainbow Dash. All she wanted in this episode was to have even one cup of cider.
This score system seems kind of... odd... it implies that as long as an episode does good things as often as it pisses you off, it gets a perfect score.
0:11 - And *that* is how Super Lesbian Horse RPG came to be :P
I can't say I'm surprised that this episode is not as good as the title. When there's such a cool title, you can expect the episode to not be good.
The apples nearly got flim flamed
Wait
Flim flam
Flim and flam
Oh for fuck sake hasbro
I love your videos.
I really really like this episode..... Idk why.
