- This 1000 watt POTA activation was almost a failure. But thanks to some high quality redneck engineering, we were able to absolutely crush it!

That was flipping awesome. Never thought I'd see someone fix an amp with parts laying around in his truck. Sideboom is a living legend.
That foot switch is a Brad K5NFB jeep CJ speical
The amp was not fixed. The only thing that was done was adding a PTT switch for the Amp.
"you're not hamming harder damnit!".... "Hold my beer". These are quotes from the video. This shit is GOLD mike!
"We're just going to redneck engineer this, coz we gotta git down." I love it.
Classic.
I love the smack talk while troubleshooting lol always the sign of a true friendship! Looks like you guys had a blast.
If you can’t break your friends balls, are you really even friends?
@@mikedahlhofer5511 Exactly!
I enjoyed the crap outta 'dis!
Always the best here. One of the best POTA activations I’ve seen on the Tube. Thanks Mike and Sideboom!
Thanks for watching
Thank you!
I’m speechless. I….am….in shock & awe. BEST video and ingenuity of 2023, the Award is given!
We had to get down
Man nice to see y'all are regular people.
Guys like this will build a race car out of nothing and win!!! Love the MacGyver way to get it to work and go on air
You should see my yard lol
@@sideboom3118 I've seen the inside of your truck. I can only imagine how your yard looks.
You’re in the big time now, not only one KW and the hexbeam but we get b-roll of the park too! - Dave K8GB
Yeah it was nice to be able to go off for a bit and get some B-Roll while the other guys were playing radio. I just put a camera on them and took another one out wondering.
I was impressed with the 2 bioenno 300ah batteries. It was at this point I knew nothing good could come of this.
Absolutely epic activation. Good work Mike and SIDEBOOM!!!!
This video had me laughing hard. It was just like our group, so you're not alone. But hey, you overcame the challenges! Great job, and keep the videos coming.
The "food switch" was an Emmy award winning performance, loved it & "How NOT to POTA" hi hi 😂
I have 2 of those amps, one exactly like the one you show and the same amp but with an internal 15V 100A switching power supply.
Firstly, the amp is NOT RF sensing! You do need a PTT cable.
Secondly, the 1000W refers to input power, you might get 600W out with e decent power supply, it needs up to 75A at 13.8V.
On CW you can only drive it with max 45W and SSB 70W depending on modulation levels, more than that the current draw will exceed the max of 75A and trigger the self-protection circuit breaker. It will also go into self protect on high SWR or a bad connection.
Loved the video and the channel!
👍Enjoyed watching this. Good that you listened for mobile and QRP stations. Nice to get out and have some fun with fellow hams.
Wall to wall and treetop tall!
Ok Mike when I heard you did a 1,000 whiskey POTA activation with a HEX beam my first thought was damn you, you beat me to it!!! However after watching your video and seeing how a real HAM (sideboom) vs. an appliance operator (you and me) POTAed on… I’m impressed! Awesome activation and great video of course. Your video editing consistently gets better. But more importantly, you showed how when things don’t go to plan, you just make a new plan. Kudos to you guys and my only regret is not being able to work you guys. 73 de KB9JQU - Curt in the Black Hills of South Dakota
Hey thanks, I appreciate you noticing. I'm always trying to improve my editing. It's really fun but boy is there a lot to learn! And yes, if this were just me, I would have packed up and gone home (after activating with significantly less wattage of course). I wasn't raised with electronics and am always learning as I go. Now I know if something doesn't work, just stick some wires in it and touch them together lol!
Brilliant..just brilliant..I’m lost for words, but great to watch while waiting for the ‘big bang’ that (thankfully) didn’t happen..😊..Thank you..73..John..G4EIJ
This was awesome Mike. Thanks for the 1000 watts to KY
Hi Mike,
During the entire video had the tune "I've got the Power" playing in my head. 🙂 Great activation after all the redneck repairs. Stay safe. 73 WJ3U
That's a really horrible song to have stuck in your head 🤣
Great video!! Helluva way to wake up this morning!! Can't wait to actually work you on the air! 73 de N5BIG
you guys are HIGH!!!! LOL thanks for the video.
"That's what happens when you're in a van down by the river...." LOL!
sideboom need to add 2 fans to the amp
It actually didn't get hot
Wow! Nice work!! Looks like you contacted someone here in South Dakota!
Awesome Mike! Wish i would have worked you guys! Cheers and 73! W3LAM
Well Mike you are the FIRST EVER for me seeing a KW battery operated....

Goonies was shot in ASTORIA OREGON
Lol fake news 🤣🤣🤣
blimey just found the video, crazy stuff dude,, bonkers as we say in the uk, but hey you had fun great stuff
Hi Mike! Thanks for using my contact in the video. This is the first time I've ever heard my signal played back and it sounded pretty broken and garbled. Any chance you could listen to it, (starts at 17:11, W4DEG) and let me know if you think that's the way it was actually coming across or maybe just an artifact of the video recording? I also had a contact with you later, your first contact I think you said...any chance you might remember if it sounded that way then too? Regardless, thanks for a fun video and the nice contacts. 73!
I was struggling to enable PTT trigger from my Xiegu G90 to a Sailor T2131 LA... Seems this trick gives some insight for PTT trigger :) Excellent..
That was great, loved seeing the set-up, the humor & I couldn't believe it, the first time I've ever seen, a "POTA KW" !!! 😂👍 73 de WA4ELW in TN 🇺🇸 dit dit 😃

"That's why Data speaks with that Creole accent" 🤣
I'm waiting to see spontaneous combustion!🔥😄👍
so were we!
Oh man I am loving this video hilarious... Wow.
Nice job guys.
Making it happen.
Holy pile up Batman!
Yeah it was pretty thick!
I wound up with a HUGE GRIN that's lasted several minutes at this INSANITY. I run QRP CW, and have no SSB Equipment. My FM Gears is all 10 watts or less. This is something I might gace done in my misguided youth. Still grinning 10 minutes later.
👍😁👍73 de KC9IH
Nonsense. ASTORIA OREGON REPRESENT.
The Goondocks!!!
@@QRPadventures haha. I'm never believing a word from him again.
Fake news 🤣
That looked like it was fun!!!
Only mildly lol!
HOLY SHOT! I didnt realize they made Biennos that big! Even Carpet bagging Texans get into the Bigger is better thing before long. I had the 7200 as my first radio. I miss it it was a great radio. I do love the 7300 though. Best Hold my Beer ham radio video ever!
Obviously you said the false Goonies bit so we would comment... it worked. haha.
I love putting in completely fake "facts" in my videos!
I owned a 7200 for a few years and upgraded to a Ftdx 10. I have a hard time dialing in stations by ear on the new radio. It sounds completely different and I can’t tell if I’m high or low by listening alone like I could on the 7200
Classic. All it needed was some Samuel L Jackson commentary.
Which film?
thats hamming harder in service! 😊
What direction were you pointing the Hex Beam ?
Mostly East. I had them point it more North about half way through my activation.
You can tune the operator off of 11 meters but you can't take the 11 meters out of the operator.
Sublime !
Hi Mike
I have your video going at the moment,
What gauge wire did you say you are using to power that amp,
Keep the great videos coming,
Thanks Dave
It's 0AWG wire
Thanks
I didn't know Oliver Anthony was a ham operator!
I don't know who that is.
@@hamradiotubeit’s a damn shame
" Why in the world would you do that?"
Hehehe...
Just cuzz. 😂
That was freaking insane! However, sadly, now all other activations will pale in comparison😂
Wait till you see my activation in Italy!
Hahahaa "60 over" comment. Oh man - roaring here with laughter - awesome activation and fun Mike Buddy. Woohooo
Pretty cool. I don't do high power but I am thinking that the Hex Beam is a much better receive antenna than a vertical or EFHW too so that makes it much easier to conduct your transactions. Enjoy your day and 73 KN4MXZ
Well, every antenna is a compromise in some way or another. A beam is going to be really good in the direction it is pointed, but not so much from the back, where a vertical is going to be omnidirectional but will less overall gain. You gotta pick your poison.
Your background music was "Rollin' & Tumblin'" or some varient of that. Who is the recording by?
I've got 6 different audio tracks of music on this video. Which one? Nothing called Rollin & Tumblin though. It's all from RUclipss royalty free library.
Hillbilly Hammin' at its finest!😂
Serious batteries, cables and power switch. Must be expensive high-end car audio parts.
Glad you guys ended up on the air... and without fire.😂
I was hoping you would say QRP to that 20 over in Jacksonville guy.😅
What was the effective PEP with that hexbeam? Mad sutup.👍🤠
I have a buddy that keeps threaten to go portable with an amp powered with a 500W of solar and a super capacitor.
I’d go with him!
Keying 1 Watt and Swinging to 2!!
Cool but Mardigras did not start in New Orleans it was in Mobile Alabama just a fun fact but super cool setup
those are some bats!
You forgot the beer. 😢
Hell yeah, make those relays clickity clack!
I would love to have that metron 1000.
me too!
Everything has a price.
Not gonna lie, I thought you guys would be hitting Europe with that wattage. At least you didn't weld any stuff together setting it up.
WANG DANNNG....💯👍
Kazoo power!
If you called out "VIDEO", to tune the amp, would you get a clear picture?
Only on SSTV
Hey, who forgot the rotor for the Hexbeam?🤔
Did you hide the forklift off camera, moving could send you to the hospital
We like to live dangerous
We are strong like Hulk!
hell yeah, 13:40: that is how it gets done
Sorry I missed this.
This is awesome. 1kw doing pota 😂😂😂😂. I love it
hamming harder
That amp is 1000w input and 600w out
Sooo awesome!!!! POTA Got Down!!!!!
KN6JHC
That's an amp from the 70's.
I watch a lot of 1a audit videos...has an overzealous park ranger shot anyone for Pota-ing yet?
If you did this in the dark the leaves on the trees would probably glow 🙂
Jam up job to a quirky pota
Yep that is the same shinanigans me an a budy has done..lol. & then Some Soooo mant times over the years when we was a cuple of broke kids wanting to get on the air..lol.
Nice pile up. 😂😂😂😂
Did ya’ll perform a RF exposure test before operating? You wouldn’t want anything bad to happen to anyone within a mile of that amp.
We did the calculations. Everyone was in a safe distance
Awesome. Love the red neck engineering!
Now your field haming
