You have such a gentle way the way you present the songs.
Karen's Voice was so beautiful. They were bother and sister. ✨
Please do more.

The Carpenters used a lot of layering in their studio recordings, harmonizing with themselves. That is one thing that made their sound different .
You should see Karen Carpenter play the drums! She was so talented! I love her voice, she will live on in music history.
My favorite female vocalist ever.
Karen played drums on this very song on the Ed Sullivan show in 1970. React to that video next, please.
This song was sung at probably 90% of weddings in the 70's
yes, and mine in 1990!
My parents' song in 1985.
Like Queen they did their own harmonies by laying down track after track.
She was considered one of the most beautiful voices ever.
she still is....just magical. Paul McCartney once said she had the best female voice he'd ever heard.....RIP Karen, your tragedy was on all of us
She never wanted to be a singer, wanted to be a drummer. Her voice is amazing.
I love when a young (well younger than me) person hears this classic music and shows themselves to be a music lover. Thank you for bringing a smile this old guys face.
The Carpenters had a lot of hits, their songs were constantly on the radio back in the early to mid 70 's. Karen Carpenter's vocals were so unique and clear, it's almost angelic.
Karen’s voice touches my soul. She’s the one for me. I feel like she is singing exclusively to me. Autotune is jealous of Karen. She could sing a phone book. Period.
100% truth
And if she sang it, I would listen to her...
The greatest voice of all time
Little did we know how much Karen was struggling mentally and the pain those thoughts were causing her to live with. It's amazing how someone so talented and so beautiful could feel that she was so "less" of a person than everyone else. This is part of an interview with Richard Carpenter and Terry Gross about their harmonizing:
GROSS: That's the signature harmonies at the end of "Close to You."
Richard Carpenter, is that your voice and Karen Carpenter's voice
overdubbed many times?
Mr. CARPENTER: Yes, Terry, it's a four-part harmony, and it's tripled. So obviously, it's 12 vocal parts, 12 voices.
Cool idea with your seed boxes! That's a very thoughtful idea to spread to everyone. Thanks for your reaction to these two beautiful voices from the 70's. I enjoyed listening. Take care and be well. Peace.
Karen and Richard are sister and brother....another reason their harmonizing is so beautiful.
That soooo creative of them to overdub the vocals! Really gives the song its “depth” sonically. And thanks so much! Just wanting to share a little light into the world around us. Thank you so much for the amazing info and for watching! ❤️🙏🏾
You’ve got to see her on the drums while singing. No one has ever sounded like her! Richard was a genius arranger of their songs.
That was Karen Carpenter and her brother Richard in white. Her story is tragic , you should research if your so inclined. She gave us such beautiful music during some very difficult times
I definitely will so do and I appreciate you Shari for the info!
There's a TV movie about her life that's available to view on youtube if interested. The Karen Carpenter Story..
@@abovetheinfluence9361 brother and sister duo who actually were the biggest american hitmakers of the 70's... her voice then and now is considered one of if not THEE greatest female pop voice of love and romance songs ever.. this song was HUGE as a wedding song back in the 70's and even today... she was ONLY 20 years old singing this song!!!!!!. and all the background vocals were done by her and her brother only!...
@@tomschmitz5745 Don't forget her Christmas songs...No one sung Christmas like Karen...Voice of an angel...Such a tragic loss.
@@abovetheinfluence9361 your welcome. 😊 Might I suggest another singer songwriter of the time, Dan Fogelberg and specifically his song "Netherlands". Also a talent gone too soon
Those background vocals you so aptly picked out were a first in the recording industry. Those are all Karen and her brother Richard doing the first multi-tracking. There's a great video here on RUclips showing exactly how they did them. The record company loved it because they didn't have to hire several vocalists. The Carpenters were the first to do a few things, like put a distorted guitar solo in a ballad on "Goodbye to Love". And yeah, Karen was one of the best vocalist's of all time. This song by the way, was a commercial for a bank. It depicted a young married couple starting out in life. Richard heard the thirty seconds of it and believed he could make it a hit.
Love your reactions. You know music and I appreciate that. Good luck bro.
Les Paul did it before Richard and was an influence on him.
Listen to Les Paul and Mary Ford recordings from the '40s to actually hear their multi-trackng sound.
Really enjoyed your reaction. Karen was so talented. She's considered to be on of the best drummers ever. It's heartbreaking the struggles she suffered.
Jay, thank you for your reaction to the legendary Carpenters. So glad you appreciate their exceptional artistry. Karen's vocals are otherworldly. Brother Richard's arrangements with his use of layered background vocals of he and Karen and his implementation of a wide range of instruments are masterful. They are a rare gift to the world of music.
I've heard her a thousand times and her voice can still give me chills.
Karen Carpenter and the brother Richard (the composer and plays piano) both of California.....so many great songs. She has the voice of an angel. "Rainy Days and Mondays" and "Goodbye to Love" are my personal favorites.
I've always loved the carpenters I remember when she died hers and Minnie Rippertons deaths were very very hard for my mom RIP she loved them and they died way too young 😢 and so did my mom
Minnie's "Loving you" was so beautiful too!
Isn't there a blooming richness in her voice when she hits the long notes that's amazing? The two fronts are siblings, Richard, who was the musical leader and writer, and Karen, The Voice.
I was only a kid when she diedi remember my mum being really upset.
My mum's a Motown girl and liked the kinks and the animals some pretty cool stuff, bit of a English rebel chick back in the 60s.
And she gave me a very good music education.
I can listen to Jimmy ruffin or the isley brothers.
Then listen to Metallica .
Karen carpenter had a flawless voice..
God bless her..,💙
Yes they are family, the guy singing next to her is her brother! I always loved her singing voice, it comes very natural. Almost conversational. Tragically she suffered from anorexia nervosa, which was little-known at the time. She died from heart failure at age 32
robichj oh wow... gone wayyyy too soon. Her voice was so “full.” ❤️
She was mentally and emotionally abused by her mom . Her mom wanted her brother to become famous not Karen. They Richard started The Carpenters and Karen sang . She died of heart failure due to her anorexia she looked like a skeleton before she died .
She could sing the phonebook!
Nice reaction.
She had beautiful angelic voice and The Carpenters have a nice back catalogue of hits so you have struck Gold here.
Me ♥️. Would love some positive right now. Also, I feel lucky to have been able to be a kid in the 70s. So much great music to grow up with. Karen was one of a kind.
She had the purest voice. I like to describe it as a little glimpse of heaven.
Another recommendation for a woman with an amazing voice and unbelievable lyrics is Janice Ian “At Seventeen”. It also came out in the 70s.
Seems like a good time for Society's Child, as well.
Saw Janis Ian many years later and her voice was still amazing!
The Carpenters will never be replicated. Richard did all the arrangements of their songs. She was a drummer starting out....she has the voice of an angel.
Karen Carpenter's voice is so angelic. It's definitely in the top 5 of female vocalists I've heard in my lifetime. My favorite Carpenter's song is "Top of the World." I remember singing it as a child, and I've carried the words with me all these decades later.
That contralto( alto 2 ) voice of hers is so unmistakable. And in 56 years, I can't recall another so pure. She had several that just give you that peaceful feeling.
A great reaction, Sir
This song was hugely popular at weddings in the 70s. Her voice is perfection
Yah , the Carpenters are no joke ! Seriously gifted musicians ! Mom and dad had them playing all the time as a kid , with Bee Gees! My childhood was incredible!
Karen Carpenter was blessed with a beautiful voice. She died way too soon. Rest well Karen.
Just found your channel tonight and love your reactions! The Carpenters are my favorite and Karen's voice is second to none. My understanding is she always thought of herself as a drummer and didn't enjoy being in front. Her death from complications of anorexia rose awareness of the disorder/disease. Thank you for sharing your spirit and light with us!
It is truly a blessing to see/hear young people visiting music that has been tucked-away for decades, and now resurfacing on YT. Many people reviewing Soft Rock and Soul lately, and some of the best ones recorded in years 1969-1971. Check out: Carpenters, 5th Dimension, Roberta Flack/Donny Hathaway. America was in the throws of the Vietnam War, and the baby-boomers were now 20-something, and ready to love their way to a happier place.
It was also a great time for folk, singer/songwriters: James Taylor, Carol King, Jim Croce, Simon/Garfunkel. All were amazing musicians, meaningful lyrics, and deeply reflective. Something we could use alot more of these days...
Karen and Richard Carpenter were brother and sister. Originally, she was the band's drummer. On this and other songs, they went back in post production and recorded their own backing tracks. This is why the harmonies are so smooth. Sadly, in 1983, Karen passed away from complications brought on as a result of anorexia nervosa. She was just 32 years old. This song, released by the duo in 1970 on the B-side of their album 'All My Life', was written by Paul Williams and Roger Nichols. It was discovered by Richard Carpenter when, while watching an ad for Crocker Bank, the tune was used as the background music for the commercial. The song remains a popular and well known Carpenters tune, and even today, is heard at many wedding events.
A lot of the story of the Carpenters is about Karen, her talents and her tragic story. Her brother Richard was not just an accomplished pianist but also quite the arranger. You should find any concert where he performs classical with a full philharmonic orchestra to appreciate his genius.
Love the Carpenters. So much feeling behind the emotions.
Love your reaction. You really got it - the smooth clarity of Karen's voice hooks you, then the harmonies almost sneak up on you and WOW. Brother and sister voices matching perfectly (Richard arranged the music, as well, so he knew what would work for them). The Carpenters are having a bit of a revival with younger listeners like yourself hearing and appreciating how talented they were.
They are brother and sister. He composed all the melodies to her vocal's. He would listen to the notes and tones and know. Karen started playing the drums they wanted her to come out from the drums so the audience could see her. Karen heard someone say she was a little fat and she heard it and began an eating disorder. You can see and hear her pain in the music. Still to this day he supports her memory. The Carpenters came out it was refreshing to hear something different. The 70s' were something in itself a lot of beautiful music was made.
Everything she sang was such perfection. Her voice was smooth like butter. They have many great songs like Rainy days and Mondays, Close to you, Yesterday once more, For all we know, Top of the world. She was also a drummer.
Can you do a reaction to Jeff Healey "Can you see the light" please. You will not be disappointed. He was a blind guitarist, totally Underrated, and Insanely Talented. Unfortunately, we lost him to cancer March 2 2008. He also did a song with Stevie Ray Vaughn "Look at Little Sister" which is another awesome performance by both. RIP Jeff!! xoxo
This song started out as a jingle for Crocker Bank (look it up on YT). Richard Carpenter, Karen’s brother used his brilliant musical arrangement skills to craft it around Karen‘s silky contralto voice.
karen carpenter actually had a 5 octave range
I read it was a 3 octave, but she rarely sang in head voice. I don't think she was comfortable singing in the higher range.
@@candicescott7176 Karen said, quote "the money is in the basement".
One of the most silky, effortlessly beautiful female voices ever. RIP Karen.
Karen Carpenter is one of the best female voices of all time. The was she interprets the lyric was second to none. She could take the cheesiest song ever and make you believe it was the best song ever written. Such a tragic story and a huge loss to this world when she passed. Thanks for sharing your reaction
They are siblings. It's sad she was taken so early. Beautiful music.
Nice reaction to The Carpenters. He was a brilliant, writer producer, she was an amazing vocalist with such a pure tone and seemingly effortless delivery. She was also a really good drummer, and early on she sang from behind the kit on many songs.
Two other absolutely mind blowing performances that I would recommend reacting to are:
Dimash: SOS. Live on, I Am a Singer. There is good reason why many people consider Dimash the best singer alive today.
Marcelito Pomoy's cover of, The Prayer. Live on Wish. He is just an amazing and unique talent. Perhaps the only one in the world who can do what he does.
One of the best female vocalists ever. Her voice was magical.
Cool. She had a beautiful voice. Very talented. Have some beautiful songs. Think they were brother and sister.
Anything by the Carpenters is fabulous. She is the greatest female singer.
I was a kid when the Carpenters were popular! Great vocals, with no fuss. Just clear music and harmonies!
Oh I almost forgot "ME" 🙋♀️🤪. Love your reactions 👍
Great observation on the lower range of her voice. It had such a rich tone to it. She and her manager knew this very well.
[from an article on Karen] "The focus on her lower register and the success it brought led Karen to jest by saying, “The money’s in the basement.”"
Karen Carpenter had a voice like no other. She was so talented & was taken from us way to soon. My cousin, sounds exactly like her, & sang this song when we got married in 1987.
This was the #1 wedding song in the 197O’s. So beautiful even 50 years later.
Yhe Carpenters. Love their music, sad story.
One of the greatest female voices.. ever. Take a listen to Superstar.. it’s painfully beautiful. Karen Carpenter.. truly a unique talent.
Her voice is ear candy
Probably one of the most played songs at weddings after it was released. Karen’s voice was impeccable and the emotion was there; we connect. My two favorites by Karen are For All You Know and the best, Goodbye To Love.
This song was written by Paul Williams originally for a bank commercial. Richard Carpenter, Karen's brother, is an amazing arranger and producer. He contacted Williams and asked if he could write an extra verse. The rest is history for this #1 hit.
Love this SONG. Love Carpenters ever....
Love this reaction greetings from Northern Ireland
She was a true, blue, pure singer - what an excellent vocalist. She and her brother were truly great as a GROUP, very difficult to do controlled harmonies, but, they grew up mastering this technique.
What an amazing duo - she should have NEVER BEEN BULLIED INTO GIVING UP THE DRUMS, AND BECOMING A LEAD SINGER, THAT IS NOT WHAT THEIR DUO/BAND WAS ABOUT!
Hi Guy! Richard and Karen Carpenter are brother and sister. Karen is the Voice, and Richard is the arranger, producer, and musical genius and sings, front, and back up vocals with his sister. Richard is classically trained. They were a musical force to be reckoned with, back in the day!
Me Hey Jay....alot of positive vibes watching your reaction! It's great seeing your take like it's brand new. These Carpenter tunes are timeless. Peace! Rc
Love the carpenters!..listened to them all through my childhood..they did their own harmonies..Richard and Karen, siblings, Richard was the arranger
Check out 'Superstar' next. My favorite. Her voice is amazing.
Allister Fiend adding “Superstar” to the list now! 😊
@@abovetheinfluence9361 You won't be disappointed. I'm a 70's, 80's guy who grew up listening to Rock/Metal, and the Carpenters, along with ABBA were my buddies and I go to when we just wanted to mellow and enjoy some great harmonies...of course, theses were hidden in the secret cassete box under the seat...we did have reputations to uphold!!! ;)
@@abovetheinfluence9361 I agree.. "Superstar" next, then "Close To You." Her voice is like honey on your soul 🙂
@@abovetheinfluence9361 great choice to add to your play list!
@@abovetheinfluence9361 Greetings from Australia! Karen is the best female vocalist I've ever heard. I agree, please review Superstar. It is fantastic. Susan
Her brother Richard Carpenter was producer, arranger, writer, musical director,he was the driving force behind the music
Sibling harmony. She had a beautiful yet troubling soul. 💔 💜 Amazing drummer. Watch her and her brothers back story. Me
They are brother and sister. Richard (on the keys) is 3 1/2 years older than Karen. Richard is responsible for the lush arrangements and harmonies. He is a damn genius on that!
Her brother Richard did all of the arrangements and the vocal arrangements. On records, they would layer their vocals to get that smooth sound. Everyone falls in love with Karen's voice. There is nothing like it
Richard and Karen Carpenter are brother and sister. Richard put a lot of the music together and played keyboards. They did a lot of studio background work on their music, thus the deep melodies and harmony. She had a voice of an angel, you'll have to check out their other music. This was on a TV show, they didn't really set up bands on shows that much on live TV back then.
One of their best harmony segments is in the song "I'll Never Fall In Love Again". They do a 39 level overdub with just their two voices.
This song was written by a man called Paul Williams he recorded it with him on Vocals and he used for a California Bank Commercial but then he gave the Song to The Carpenters where they Made it into a Huge Hit Song
What people don't realize is that in the video you just watched, the reason Karen carpenter was sitting while singing this song is because she was so weak from the anorexia she was suffering from. She had one of the most purest voices ever recorded and will ever be remembered for it. She and her brother wrote and sang many beautiful songs. It is a crying shame that she died at such a young age. However, the carpenters music will forever live on. Their music was wholesome and the lyrics had deep meaniings. If you sit back and truly listen to the words of their songs, pure poetry.
Brother and sister duo.. He was a piano prodigy and amazing music arranger.. She was a natural at the drums- her true love and passion- but once it was “discovered “ what a perfect angelic voice she had, that’s what she became known for, “One-take Karen” had perfect pitch and never hit a wrong note.
Unfortunately her perfectionism extended to her view of her body, and she became severely anorexic, 5’4 and got down below 90 lbs.
Some believe that the pressure to get out from behind her beloved drum set and be front and center, she felt more “visible” and self-conscious. She complained that “out front” people could see “every pound”
She died as a direct result of her anorexia, years of starving herself damaged her heart. In the end she sought help but they used IV nutrition to put 30 lbs on her in a couple weeks, that was the final stress her heart could take.
Anorexia was not really understood at the time, her death brought public awareness to it for the first time
Richard and Karen were brother and sister and were from Downey CA. Karen had one of the greatest voices ever!
Karen and Richard are brother and sister. This song was heard by Richard on a bank commercial. He added his touch and they recorded it.
Karens voice was just amazing, sooo buttery smooth.
Karen Carpenter was amazing singer. Her brother Richard is standing next to her in the white suit. They both loved & cared for each other. Richard helped coronate the music background.
They are siblings.
Really appreciate your reactions. Descriptive , musically inclined, astute and knowledgeable .thoroughly
Enjoyeable .always look forward to seeing you again. Easy on these eyes .
3cheers from Canada
My Dad had her records and was a big fan. I grew up listening to much of her music.
The CARPENTERS WERE a group from 1969 to 1983 . The core of the group was a brother and sister. Richard Carpenter was a brilliant arranger, songwriter, and keyboard player. Karen Carpenter was one of the best female pop singers of all time. She was also one of the best drummers singers of all time.....check out Karen Carpenter kick-ass drummer here on youtube. Karen died at the age of 32 one month before her 33 rd birthday...from complications due to anorexia
Ok...YOU SIR ARE AMAZING!!
Your sentiment at the end was just BEAUTIFUL!! I got teary eyed!! I am a new subscriber and am I glad to know you!! God bless you, peace, and health.
I am so happy to call you brother!! You made my DAY!!
🙏😁🌹
This was a brother sister group. Richard wrote most of their songs and could play just about any instrument especially piano. He had great background vocals too. Karen had the voice of an angel! So beautiful. She played a mean drum too! Unfortunately Karen died very young from anorexia. Her death brought the disease to the forefront. Can't tell you how many weddings this song has been played at. Take care and thanks
Rainy Days and Mondays. So beautiful.
This song started life as a commercial jingle for a bank. Peter, Karen's brother and the musical genius of the group, contacted the writer and had him rework it for them to release on their album.
Richard and Karen Carpenter, brother and sister, from Downey, California. Richard did all of the arrangements and producing. There was a made-for-TV movie of their lives (it's probably available here on RUclips or some other platform). In the 1970's, there was not a couple who got married that did not play this song at their wedding or at the reception.
Richard Carpenter was a young music prodigy; Karen was just a kid sister struggling to get some of the attention lavished on her brother by their parents. She tried to learn a couple of instruments and ended up drumming in her school marching band. While Richard was playing classical piano and experimenting with jazz, Karen was falling in love with the drums and managed to persuade her parents to buy her a small kit. She was soon good enough to persuade Richard to let her be the female drummer in a jazz trio he was forming, which would be unusual today and almost unheard of back then.
The family had moved to California in her early teens to further Richard's music career but both he and Karen were a little 'square' for what was then the 'happening' place for teenagers. Jazz was niche music and certainly wasn't going to make him a big star but Richard would adapt to an industry now influenced by the 'British Invasion'. Karen quite possibly already had insecurities emanating from the family dynamic . . . now, as well as a parent-pleasing sibling, she also had to compete as a California 'chick'. Worse still, Richard would write songs and arrangements for her to sing when she was happier in the background somewhat safe from unfavourable scrutiny. Nevertheless, she remained the dutiful sister, which she continued to do as they morphed into a short-lived pop band with a couple of Richard's college pals.
According to Richard, he felt like an arrangement he had come up with might sound better if Karen sang it in a lower register. They tried it and "magic happened". He knew exactly what needed to be done; Karen - reluctant though she may be - would have to ditch the drums for a position front and centre in a new venture called Carpenters (never THE Carpenters). Karen had other ideas. She didn't want to let her brother down but in her heart she was a drummer who sang on some numbers. She would soon come to realise that her voice was the main attraction; a notion that discomfited her because of Richard's major role in arranging and often writing and producing their output. Never one for bare midriffs, mini skirts or plunging necklines, she was also very attached to the refuge of her drum kit. It took a team effort to entice her out but their act would always incorporate an extra drum kit she could retreat to.
She was good too. A 1975 poll in Playboy, which admittedly might be inherently skewed towards a pretty girl, rated Karen's drumming above the likes of Ginger Baker, Keith Moon and John Bonham, who was displeased enough to remark: "She wouldn't last 10 minutes on a Led Zeppelin number!" She apparently made a start on proving him wrong but thought better of it after a few minutes to kill the debate. But she was a young, attractive female pop-star and inevitably judged for the way she looked, which can best be described as like the transplant to 60s/70s California she was. Maybe her insecurities were formed at home but nourished by celebrity. Her untimely demise marked the moment the word anorexia improved the vocabulary of many of us. I can only say we should be thankful we had her before the social media age, which would have destroyed her before she ever got started.
This specific song is one Richard first heard as a TV ad featuring a young couple buying their first home, facilitated by a Crocker Bank mortgage. He recognised the singer as Paul Williams, who was coincidentally signed to the same label. Richard contacted Paul to ask if what he'd heard was part of a complete song. It really wasn't but Carpenters had had a recent number one with a Bacharach/David song so lyricist Williams, who was yet to have a hit, was inspired to write the rest almost overnight. He would not regret it as it became almost as big a hit for Richard and Karen and continues to earn him royalties even today as a wedding video favourite. The harmonies, as in most of their songs, were Richard and Karen multi-tracked after Richard had studied the similar technique of Les Paul and Mary Ford.
Thank you for your reaction. I loved it . 😃👍🌼✌️
Lyrics, "white lace and promises". Talking about getting married and beginning a relationship together.
Karen Carpenter is a top class singer.
I was 12 when this group came out I love them Richard heard this is a bank commercial in LA and turned it into a song and number one hit I believe
Dude, it doesn't get more white bread than this, but this is a great song, definitely their grooviest. My Mom loved The Carpenters. Nice reaction.
Considering this started out as the theme to a BANK AD, yes it is amazingly good.
Love your energy! Also love Above the Influence. I'm in recovery and so it speaks to me. Also love that you want ppl to have affirmations. You seem like a Lightworker to me!💜
So glad you did this...I grew up on them and she was an angel.
Man, if someone hasnt suggested it, you cant go wrong with Dimash. Also would suggest Tingre ..the song Heaven. Or any Merle Haggard. :)
Much love from Texas, like your whole vibe, seem like a cool person.
Even after 30 years, I still get chills listening to her voice and three-part harmonies.
Hi, I appreciate your reaction& amazement at her lovely& distinctively different vocals. Please react to their, "Superstar Quad Mix" video or "Close to You Quad Mix" These versions bring out the Best of their original sound! 😎 Peace out 👊
her voice was perfect. Literally pitch perfect and she had what was considered one of the purest voices ever.
Brother and sister, and the background track is their own singing, they did all their own background singing work on a separate track and then put them together
The Carpenters had a number of great songs. One of them is "Only Yesterday" from 1975. Recommend it.
They are sister and brother. Loved them. Love you for doing this ❤️
