Good long range plans for timber growth. Those were similar to my plans but instead of letting my pines grow another 10 to 15 years for good sawtimber I had them clear cut. This was due to trees starting to die from ipps beetle infestations. I was afraid in another few years I would loose most of my mature stand. I'm in South Alabama. Good luck with your plans.
99 miles north of Lake Ontario , i will try Ponderosa pine from seed. 🌲 the ants killed my Jack Pine . 🐜 Beech , maple, oak, birch and yellow pine do well on my rocky lot. 🐺
Thank you for the question! The focus on pines, versus other evergreens, is simply due to soils and environment. While the western mountains of Virginia can support the likes of spruce and fir (and these are grown for Christmas trees) most of the commonwealth is too hot and low in elevation to grow these other species well. Southern yellow pines also have a lot of research behind them for maximized productivity and will have a good sale-ability for timber with local markets.
