The buildings commissioner and the FDNY officials qualified most of their comments, but at the same time recognized the public need to know. It is at times like these when those of us looking from the outside realize just how amazingly well the various NYC departments work together. These officials serve millions upon millions of residents. Nonetheless, it was obvious by the looks on their faces and the tone of their voices just how much these officials value the life of one person. I applaud them.

So,--- the private owner of the house was doing unauthorized work and violated a stop work order...what an idiot.
Could be the private owner of the house is a foreigner and where he/she come from there are no building inspections.
One worker dead. Sorry for his family’s loss. We can’t really comment without knowing all the facts can we?
But we can say that the technology we have now can alert a building department of unauthorized work done on anyone’s home by the product the home owner buys or rents.
He/she rents a scaffold or back hoe a building department worker can match the purchase with a permit of lack thereof.
I think the greater good is the safety of future people using the structure that it is sound and it won’t collapse because it was done without inspections and plans.
It’ll be a changed society in a few short years.

As an FDNY EMT that worked in Harlem, I have seen FDNY Firefighters perform stupendously Courageous feats that were even Acrobat level dangerous but without the safety nets to catch them. What Firefighters sometimes put themselves through is like a real life "Die Hard" movie but these real Heroes don't get the Millions that Hollywood actors do.

I just received a warning from Google that using the word chief in my original comment may sound disrespectful to some viewers. Since I have become enlightened about my insensitivity, I may pass it on through a mass e-mail to all fire departments in the country and warn them that they could be next.🧯
