Whew! I was afraid that Imanaga was going to join the Dodgers, making it the Los Angels Dodgers of Tokyo. The Cubs got a decent inning-eating lefty. He will give a solid outing every 5th day. His change up reminds me of Tom Glavine's change up.
As a person who is a massive fan of Japan (and you can tell by my profile picture that I am a huge Japan supporter, not a person who lives in Japan, just to give you a quick explanation:D), it is always nice to see Japanese stars starting their MLB careers! 2024 will be an awesome year for international players!!
I like him, I think hes kind of another Justin Steele really......same velo, same kind of breaking ball, they both have that "magic" high-rpm cut-ride fastball all the analytics dorks love cause batters just dont square it up well. Got the big sweeping breaking ball just like Justin. He just uses the change-up/splitter thing and Justin doesn't. That said, he is a replacement for Marcus Stroman. Does not quite fix the problem that the Cubs need a true power-armed ace to strike out a ton of guys and match up with playoff teams.........but he looks like a good pitcher Im happy to see what Shota can do! I think 14-10 with a 3.42 ERA or something like that would be awesome.
I don’t think there’s a chance he gets an opportunity to get that many wins and losses aka go deep into games. He’s never thrown more than 170 innings. Most years he only threw 155 so it will be interesting
Yea I expect Assad and Jordan Wicks will duke it out for the 5th spot. Taillon gets paid so he will be the 4. Shota slots in as the 3. Low-key I think Shota could be.......ummm....Justin Steele with a change-up.
@@danr154 I was thinking the same, as far as Shota goes. Good comp (mid to high velo, with one plus breaking pitch to compliment a coupla avg ones. Justin has a better slider, Shota has a better change). And, honestly, I would be very happy with that: #3 getting 14-17 wins with an ERA hovering just below 3. Lot of "ifs" to be toooo comfortable. IF The Professor is full back. IF Assad continues to improve steadily (carry his Aug & Sept into a full season). IF Wicks takes the next step and blossoms. IF Taillon pitches more like he did in the second half than the first. But, you are absolutely right: Taillon is signed for the next 2 or 3 seasons, so he will def have a spot.
@@rolmodel12. The problem with Shota is, he always gets tired or hurt during the season. That will be exposed more in MLB`s unforgiving busier and longer schedule.
Ok..from now on if I ever hear the Yankees bought their team after what LA did then the person who says it needs to give up baseball and watch something else instead.
the rules aren't exactly clear, whether it's a bat swing or not. it's not about 'break'; you can't see 'break'. you can see if the barrel is ahead of the dominant elbow. or body. that works in a technical sense. the umpire at third/first has to make a snap judgement. so, his view, isn't so good.
Been a follower of NPB since 2007 and I still don't get the hype with this guy. For all the times I've seen him pitch for DeNA, he's been mid at best. But he did cash in his WBC performance though so good for him!
It's his high rpm fastball. He is very deceptive as well. Just his high rpm fastball thrown above the strike zone with combination of his split change is very good. Now that he is gone from DeNA I think Azuma will finally be the ace! He's already pitchef after TJ surgery for 1 season so he should be getting used to his new elbow now.I expect a breakout season from him.
Who knew he'd be the best pitcher in the league. Good move by the Cubs.
Cubs definitely made a great decision on getting him.
