- Learn how to possibly improve the final quality when nesting compositions in After Effects. Details below...

The Collapse Transformations switch has two functions. One of those functions is around vector artwork and is not explored in this video. The second of those functions involves nested compositions.
By default, After Effects looks at a nested composition as a single, effectively pre-rendered, element. With the Collapse Transformations switch active, After Effects examines the elements within nested compositions and will render a higher quality result if the detail is present.
SUMMARY OF STEPS IN THIS VIDEO
Source video
Original video: videos.pexels.... (Herwin Heyman)
Renamed for use in this demo to bird.mp4
1920 x 1080px
Composition: bird
192 x 108px
Contains bird.mp4 scaled to 10%
Composition: container
1920 x 1080px
Contains "bird" composition scaled to 1000%
With the Collapse Transformations button active the video looks crisp and not pixelated.
10% x 1000% = 100%
Wow they hid such an important function in a box with extremely nerdy naming?! This opens so many new possibilities omg
I hear you. I think it would also help us users a lot if Adobe put more information in the popup that is displayed when you mouse over a tool.
@@MichaelBullo I can now assemble smaller comps in a 1080p comp, scale it up and animate their position to appear in a sequence to create a fake 2D environment illusion!! This is too op!
@@ABDTalk1 Sounds awesome mate. Best of luck creating some cool scenes.
you know whats crazy, it might sound dumb but i've been looking for an easy way to intentionally downscale my videos. it thought i would have to render with the worst possibel settings but you just showed me a much easier way. thank you so much!!! also learning collapse transformations
Thank you. That's great this video helped you out in multiple ways. Best of luck with your projects.
Five minutes video for you to say Collapse Transformations switch 🙄 🙄
Pretty much… with a little context 😉
@@MichaelBullo Nice Work Man good luck 😎
@@marawanco1 Cheers mate. Have a great 2021.

Thank you so much! Finally found out how to solve some issues I had!
Excellent. Thanks mate.
I know I am kinda off topic but do anybody know a good website to stream newly released movies online ?
@Bentlee Fabian I would suggest Flixzone. Just google for it :)
@Abdullah Magnus yea, been watching on FlixZone for years myself =)
@Abdullah Magnus Thanks, signed up and it seems to work :) I appreciate it!
hey bro, my problem is that i cant press it, it doesnt let me press the vector thing.
What kind of layer is it? Movie? Shape? Illustrator file?
thank you
Thanks mate
Hello, thanks for this. How to sort the issue of a black bg being created when u press collapse transformations on a pre-comp? I have AI layers on a precomp, That precomp then I placed on my main canvas and scaled up to 250 but I want the vectors to keep their quality so I collapsed but then a black bg is created and I don't know why. Can u help?
Thank you. A few thoughts…
BACKGROUND
While it may look like a solid black background, you may just be seeing the background colour of your composition. Check your Composition Settings (found in the Composition menu) for both your comp and your pre-comp.
TRANSPARENCY
There is a button that allows you to quickly view the transparency within a composition as a checkerboard pattern. I have a video on this that may help…
ruclips.net/video/jmztmEtNZ3I/видео.html
EXPORTING
Are you exporting out your video in a format that supports transparency such as .MOV? If you are exporting out to something like .MP4 that doesn't support transparency, your transparent areas may be just rendered as black.
Great explanation but can you tell that do we have to turn collapse transformation in every single precomp in every project?
You only need to activate it when needed. Are you regularly nesting large content within small comps that are in turn nested and scaled up within large comps? If so, that could be a bit of a pain in the butt ;)
is this on AE 2020?
I recorded this on AE 2019. Are you having a problem?
@@MichaelBullo just figured u had to press the switches at the bottom lol ty though
@@iShockYT Ah yes. We've all been there mate :) Nicely done.
I cant click it because theres no box underneath it to put it in
Are you trying to activate this on a layer that doesn't support the feature such as a Shape layer?
@@MichaelBullo Im just using a regular mp4 that i recorded.
@@aceevfx.2879 Are you able to recreate what I did in the video? If you want to use the exact video I did the link is in the Description.
@@MichaelBullo Yes, I did everything in the video but its still pixilated.
@@aceevfx.2879 Can you step me through the specifics. What are the pixel dimensions of your video, comps, etc...

Thank you so much!!
Thanks mate
this button not active for me ,. i want to use in a png file format
Hi Alan. Are you sure you've exactly followed the steps in the video?

👍
Thank you so much man !
Thanks mate. Happy to have helped.
hey, i cant enable the collapse transformation? help pls
Can you please provide more information… You can't find the button? You can't enable the button? You've found the button but it's not working? etc…
@@MichaelBullo i cant enable the button
@@hania_roids123_ What kind of layer is it?
When I Render it out though, it renders as if the switch is turned off, how do you render with it on?
Are you sure Collapse Transformations is the source of your problem? Could you perhaps just be accidentally exporting out a low quality video?
@@MichaelBullo I'm certain. The entire perspective changes in the render
@@jamesdavis625 When you say "perspective" do you mean the aspect ratio is changing? I'm still going to recommend you go through the export options. If you export out via the Render Queue click on the blue text to the right of Render Settings. If you export out via the Adobe Media Encoder click on the blue text within the Queue panel.
@@MichaelBullo Turned out to be a camera issue. It renders Active cam, I have it set to front cam in preview. I created a camera with front cam attributes and renders perfectly like I intended. I appreciate your efforts in trying to help me figure out this issue though. Thank you
@@jamesdavis625 Ah. Nicely done. Good to hear you solved it. Thanks mate.
So nice explanation
Thank you
Great explanation
Thanks mate
Nice!!!!
Thank you
I cant see the box for the Collapse Transformations
Check out the part at 3:21
@@MichaelBullo i still cant find the box to enable it.
@@zafi9133 Did you find it?
@@MichaelBullo no :(
@@zafi9133 Go to the Workspace section within the Window menu and check you are using the "Default" option. If you are, try the option "Reset Default to Saved Layout"
👍👍

Beautiful! thank you!
Thank you Khaled
Just an idea - show the solution first and then explain it for the people who have time ;-)
Good call. That's actually what I do on my more recent videos. Took me a while to figure that one out ;)
thank you
