Stress and strain are two of the most important concepts in materials science and engineering. Stress refers to the force applied to a material per unit area, while strain is a deformation or change in the shape of the material that results from the applied force.
What is called strain?
Strain is the deformation of a material from stress. It is simply a ratio of the change in length to the original length. Deformations that are applied perpendicular to the cross section are normal strains, while deformations applied parallel to the cross section are shear strains.
What is stress on materials?

Stress is the a measure of what the material feels from externally applied forces. It is simply a ratio of the external forces to the cross sectional area of the material.
What is the SI unit of stress?
The SI unit for force is the Newton (N) and the SI unit for area is the square metre (m²). Therefore, the SI unit for stress is N/m². This unit is also known as the Pascal (Pa), named after the French mathematician and physicist Blaise Pascal.
What is the SI unit of strain?
“The unit for strain in the SI (Système International) is “one” i.e. 1 ε= 1 = 1 m/m. In practice, the “unit” for strain is called “strain” and the symbol e is used. Usually, strain is in the order of um/m, i.e. 10-6, and therefore, the unit “µε” (microstrain) is most commonly used.”

Stress can be defined as a state of worry or mental tension caused by a difficult situation. Stress is a natural human response that prompts us to address challenges and threats in our lives.
Why is strain important?
Knowledge of the details of strain behavior is essential for the design and analysis of mechanical parts and structures. The main application of strain in mechanics is to comprehend how materials respond to stress. Any time a force is applied to a substance, deformation or a change in shape results.
What is meant by Hooke's law?

Hooke's law states that the strain of the material is proportional to the applied stress within the elastic limit of that material. When the elastic materials are stretched, the atoms and molecules deform until stress is applied, and when the stress is removed, they return to their initial state.
