You have done a fantastic job of opening up Montessori to the average mom. Montessori is NOT about money.. it is about respect for your child and that bond as we assist them in discovering our world. You have not changed... This message in each of your videos is so cool. I just did this decluttering with my husband actually on Christmas night, where we purged SO many things. I ended up with bins to spare as well. I have been so inspired by your thrifty and inexpensive solutions you have shared through the years. Thank you. Excellent video.

Hello. Thank you for all you continue to share about your montessori practices. Even though my oldest goes to preschool, we strive to maintain a montessori lifestyle at home as much as possible. My nieces went to a montessori school for several years and I loved their way of learning, especially with math. I have prepared the beads myself but looking for additional math resources I can work on with my son. We are all visual learners and I know he would love this approach. Will you be willing to share some math lessons/activities sometime? I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you for all you do.

I would love to see progression videos on how to introduce and build upon specific skills through the Montessori approach with younger toddlers. Things such as cleaning skills, self care tasks, and rudimentary art supply usage and example activities that gradually fine tune their skills as you follow the readiness signs in your child. That along with how you introduce some classic Montessori materials like dressing frames, pouring activities, and flower arranging.

Yes, please! I am homeschooling my 3.5 year old daughter and honestly she's not all into all the activities I come up with for her. She doesn't like to sit for a "lesson"... I feel like we're not doing school at all.
Also, mornings are kind of crazy around here. How do you get your girls to get up (on time), brush teeth, hair, change pajamas, make, eat, and clean breakfast all before school starts (8:30 ish)??
Mornings are just dragging and then it's noon.. 🤦‍♀️

I am so here for decluttering content!! Also I could not agree more that it's not about the stuff. My eldest (4.5) spends more time playing with sticks and bits of paper and stones than any of the toys we have. And the baby loves nothing more than a saucepan and some kitchen utensils!
Edit: thinking about future content, if you'd be happy to share I'd be really interested to hear about the prepared adult side of Montessori and what that looks like for you and Mike. If/how you build in moments to fill your own cups so you can be really present for the girls. I know it's something I struggle with - I have massive introvert days when all I want to do is hide behind a book all day. Hope that sort of makes sense!

Also I would LOVE a video on the unit study materials you’ve gathered! I haven’t heard you talk much about those or the units/items you use. Sounds so cool! You’re absolutely right about doing Montessori on a budget or in a small space. My family and I live in an 8’x22’ off grid tiny house on wheels and we do Montessori with our son. We have about 30”x12” to work with for his items and so we know it’s not about the “stuff”! Thanks for your great video!

  • @CheryPet93

I think some of the „you have to rich“ comments do not refer specifically to the „stuff“ but as well to the time. Not every family can afford the time to spend the time with their children at home, but need to work really soon after the child is born. And if you dont have a childcare near you, which is dedicated to montessori, it will be very difficult to implement the philosophy of monetessori in the way you‘d like to do, because there is only about 1 to 3 days days left a week you are spending really paranting them more then just while morning- and eveningroutine and night. Of course here are also bits of montessoriphilosophy that one can implement, but following your childs play is really dificult in these situations. At least i guess so.

People tend not to realize how external clutter creates internal clutter in our minds. You had some good ideas for this. I am always hesitant to buy things to store things or arrange things because the things I buy are then more things that have to be arranged and cleaned, etc. LOL. I want our home to be warm and comfy, but I also need clarity, cleanliness, calm, coordination.

Great as usual Ashley ♥ Could you elaborate on how exactly to do Montessori on a budget/ talk about how to do Montessori without the "Montessori materials"?
Though I always try to remind it is about the principles and concepts, I struggle to wrap my head around what my baby would do without these"toys" or how can she keep herself engaged?
And I end up buying a pile of stuff, which may actually not be of persistent interest to her.
So, if you can make a video on demystifying "Montessori Toys" that would be aweeeomseee..
    Thanks and Love from

Hearing you say out loud that Kylie will likely be home schooled the rest of the year really broke my heart. Don't get me wrong, I know your providing an amazing environment and phenomenal education for her, and she is incredibly lucky and happy to be with you and Mia. But I remember how excited she was to stay school and how much you and her were waiting for that moment. To know how short lived it was because of, frankly, factors we as the adult population should've been able to control really breaks my heart.

I totally agree that Montessori is not supposed to be about the stuff. I guess part of the struggle is that there are so few Montessori content creators out there who ever actually show what it looks like to do Montessori without the stuff. They always have the stuff. So when you don't have the stuff, you kind of don't know where to turn for what to do and eventually figure that Montessori must not be doable after all. I'd love to see more content on how to do Montessori without stuff - maybe a video about how to start Montessori without spending any money? I feel like this would help a lot of families!

So happy to see this video. We live in a small apartment and are usually very minimalist with everything - really helps when living in a small space with a baby and toddler.
But after I first started toy rotation, I also started hanging on to nearly every toy/activity/book, even baby clothes, as it was out of the way in boxes, always thinking maybe one of our girls will get a future use out of it. This resulted in the boxes looking a lot like yours have by now and I find it incredibly hard to tackle the crazy amount at this point. So thanks for the inspiration - it really helps to see your video.

This was zo satisfying to see the organisation of everything. I realised that i wasn't organised as a person because i never really needed to be as i could go by not really focusing on enything other than my own daily items and personal necessities because i was not responsible to anyone else if i did not have what i needed for education or work that was my only responsibility. Yet once i took more responsibility of the house being minimal for my baby's sense of order and i moved onto my own minimalism joirney i found out i naturally needed everything to have a place and be in its place 👀. This really just came from Montessori to be honest. I loved how easy it was for me to clean the areas that were minimal for my baby, especially the shelf. So really it is about efficiency and making life a little bit easier once we have gone through the process of decluttering.
I remember why i always procrastinated on every task i had to do simply because it was too overwhelming the thought of going through all the clutter. Coming from a borderline hoarder's house it has been a big learning curve and im sure i have gone the opposite direction as a reaction perhaps but this is far better for our mental health as a famil too. Hahah everyone wants to go to our room to just relax because of how calming it is now.
I am so excited for the focus on more of the non-material aspects of Montessori. At the start it was, as you have always said, esier to set up the physical environment initially when doing Montessori but all the interactions between us and our child and the way we live our lives day to day are extremely important to work on, more important if it really is something that is going against the habits we have previously had.
I am also now realising that i place so much more value in the experiences we have rather than the 'work' that Huda is doing. My favourite memories are when we have invested in experiences like the aquarium or swimming or the farm or trips to other areas of the country or different parks and just visiting other family with children.
These are indeed what will form who they are; the way they are spoken to, contribution they have to the house and the independence they have. All of these are forming their character. I wish we had this growing up, more so than the activities that she has, I value the way she is being treated with resect and understanding.
And i truly am greatful for you helping us do this for them. You have been a great guide for us so thank you😫🙏🏼💕

    Dear parents!
When Your kids are very good behaviour all the time and always taking good care of their things, keeping their rooms very clean, loving their favorite things and want to make nice childhood collections of their things: books, clothes, toys, video games, clothes, DVDs and etc, then donataing is very wrong thing to do. If You have few space then storage boxes and shelves will help You out and Your kids will be very happy and thankful then, if they can keep their favourite things. Childhood things are very valuable and it is very sad, if they won’t see them anymore in their life. Every child should have the right to keep their things, if they can take good care of them all the time!!!
    Respectfully,
    Astra Viil ☺️🙏

I have always hate clutter. And I was so afraid when we had our baby, because I thought oh lord toys everywhere ahahaha. And being very honest that’s why I started Montessori 🥴, because I didn’t want our house to become a mess. So thankfully it has worked wonderful for us. We are very minimalistic, our garage only has 4 wall cabinets and everything is very well organized. I feel so much peace every time we arrive in our garage and everything is tidy and clean 😍. And inside our home we only keep what we are really using, hate when you open a drawer or door and you just wanna run and hide ahahahaha, not in our home. And keeping everything de clutter is very easy when you don’t have a lot of stuff. Everything has a place and everything in its place 🙌🏻

  • @BumbleSmeeBee

I think the problem with the misconception about Montessori is that the face of Montessori today really is social media influencers, who in turn earn their income from ads/sponsors/affiliates. So it’s skewed toward the “stuff”. And so there aren’t as visible examples of non-materialistic Montessori practise.
Every time I log onto Instagram, I see a suggested reel featuring a fully functional play kitchen, and I’m jealous, haha. (I have a small space, I’m time poor, and am not handy like that, so we make do with a step stool and parental assistance.)
Also, some things are just easier if you can buy the nice fancy stuff. It can feel hard to see beautiful Montessori spaces and then look at your own attempts and feel like you’re not getting it right.
I appreciate your conscientiousness, honesty, and self-awareness on this subject.

Do you have any videos explaining why Montessori doesn't force on languages and math right away and one on why Montessori doesn't teach the names of the alphabet, but instead the sounds is the main focus? I'm trying to walk my husband through a lot of the things that I have learned but I'm not very good at putting into words so I have been showing him your videos and it has been making things easier for him to comprehend what I'm trying to do with our son. Along with trying not to teach my son to memorize numbers by their symbol but trying to teach him and understand quantity versus the number itself as it holds no true value to a child until they are old enough to comprehend that. It is just a symbol.

I'll also like to ad that actually you'd end up spending money on your children's toys and environment anyway so for me this seems not be a good enough argument against using Montessori at home for those peole who assume it is for the rich. We are no way close to being rich but i prioritize my daughter's development and think about the types of items i buy instead of just buying whatever is common for children to have. I know i could take more time to look around what i coudl use in and costruct activities from that instead if buying the activities and the items we do buy are an investment for every child we may have as they are a good quality they do last longer. The fact i we don't need that many toys to keep them engaged already because they have the skills to get involved in the daily house work and be part of the world as it is looking for activities to do that aren't just for 'keeping children occupied'.

This is the part that really gets overlooked! Most end up buying at least SOMETHING to entertain their baby, if they can afford it. But a couple quality items and the knowledge to set up the independent space will go far beyond a box full of flashy toys

I love minimalism and would love to see more of you combining that and Montessori. We work hard to do Montessori at home and live in a tiny apartment with relatively few toys. For us, that just means a whole lot more real life skills, outdoor play, and creative thinking. It’s doable, but doesn’t feel social media worthy. It’s easier to show a picture of a cool shelf than of you drawing with your kids and talking about the differences between a cow and a horse 😅 But to everyone who’s going through the same: we’re doing a good job. Our kids are benefiting greatly. We got this

Hey Ashley! I was just wondering since you donated books to your local library…at what age did you first visit the library with both of your girls? I want to know what age range is “appropriate” or more so what level of development should I watch out for to take my little bud. Thanks for sharing your plethora of knowledge with us btw! Truly has been a haven for parenting approach.

@@E009629 it’s not that. We have our personal library at home. I’ve been reading with/to him from I was pregnant and we read daily now. But the public library is different experience I imagine. Also, it’s not just books. Newspapers, magazines etc are all great resources too ;)

    Hello Ashley,
and thank you for this new video. Thanks to you I have learnt a lot about Montessori. You have been by my side since I began with this very interesting and amazing journey.
My question is: could you please make a video about what specifically you have inside every box? I think there is a lot of exercises and games your girls use we still have never seen before and would be a huge help for us! Sometimes I just need one example to get or realize my own activities! It’d be great if you could to that! (although I think you would have to make a video for each one box 🤣✌🏻 Take it easy!) You are awesome!
We love you so much guys and are always happy watching you from the far away Austria! Remember: there are no kangaroos in Austria! 😊😊🤣🤣😘😘
Waiting all exited for a new video! - Bye bye, vacadoooes~~~😂😂👋🏻👋🏻😊😊❤️❤️

What a nice video! This year I donated 10 huges bacs of girls' clothes and some toys. It was such a gorgeous feeling of liberating myself from all this staff! I put away the Montessori boxes, hoping to save them for our future grandchildren. 😉 In the USA, and particularly in your family, do you have a tradition / a habite to save some toys and books for the next generations?

I'm definitely a natural born collector. But I think it comes sort of from the fact that I grew up in a level 1-2 hoard. To me it's like, if my place contains pens, it must contain gel pens, glitter gel pens, brush pens, ballpoint pens, invisible ink pens, erasable pens... all in every available color. And kind of the same with everything else. Do I have stuffed animals? Well then I have to have a stuffed animal in every possible kind of animal I can find. Do I have Legos? Well then I need at least one of every single kind of available Lego. I'm trying to find a way to get over this mindset, because I have narrowed down the number of categories of things that I have to honestly very few categories. But within those categories... I have too many of everything. But it doesn't FEEL like too many; in fact it feels like too little. But I have so much stuff absolutely everywhere, and I want to get rid of it. Ah, it's just so frustrating. Can anyone relate? How do you get over a mindset like this? How do you choose?

I was just talking to my 1 year old about this, yes you read that right, my 1 year old! 😆 clearly I was alone with her talking to myself jajajaja but like you, I am on a decluttering journey & boy is it amazing! I started watching Dawn from the Minimal Mom too, so when I heard you were binge watching her I was like SAME! 😂
Btw you are amazing and my girls (4 yr old and 1 yr old) and I love watching your blogs while we eat breakfast! 💕

Yes definitely do more on the topic! I think of Montessori and minimalism as the two different sides of a coin. How about taking some time to show what yiu actually keep now for these age groups in each bin? Maybe a similar video for the girls' clothes/accessories and other they have not related to toys? For example bedsheets, water bottles, kids plates, hair accessories etc? How about stuffed animals? Our collection keeps growing against my will 🤪

I am excited for your content about doing montessori without the "stuff". We live in a condo and I already have a problem with space to keep things. For example, i would love to have a pickler triangle in the future but if i buy that we won't have a living room anymore. So i am really excited what i can still do for my son (he is 4 mos old now) montessori wise. 😊

I discovered Minimal Mom 4 years ago around the time my son was born. I really believe that the decluttering I've done plus applying Montessori principles have resulted in him making a smooth transition from naps to 1.5 hr quiet times that he looks forward to. He can focus and play independently for so much longer than a lot of other kids his age. It's not just his shelves we keep simple - it's our whole home and our schedules too! I'm really looking forward to content that's less about the "stuff"!

Hi Ashley. I would enjoy more videos like this. I just reorganized my daughter's toys yesterday! And I will definitely have to fine tune it. I also would like to say that your positive discipline video is a touch stone for me. When my daughter is melting down and I'm about to melt down it is your video that comes to my mind (over all the other books and content I've read) in the moment of stress. You help my daughter and I on a regular basis. Thank you.

My kids go to daycare and school so we don’t have as many learning activities, but we do have a lot of open ended play resources- it would be great to see what you keep when your girls are doing the majority of their education outside the home :)

It’s so hard to get rid of things, especially the expensive stuff. We are having another so I have a reason to keep, but after I know will I will struggle.
Goodwill is great, but I highly encourage you to look for smaller thrift stores that support specific causes you are passionate about it. I usually drop off a load, then do a quick trip and I don’t always find something but when I do it’s usually a jackpot!
