LOL I'm sure I will get plenty of complaints for saying something different about the display from other bloggers and even about the battery life but at least for the display you can have your opinion but you can't argue against measurements. They are a scientific fact. I will always try to get you the most accurate information. Some won't like it but at least it is there for you to see =) Don't bite the hands of those who are trying to help move the industry forward for better display quality.
Erica Griffin like I don't get it I have a lg g3 and it has 1440p display and my dad has a HTC m8 the g3 has a better camera it records at 4k if you know what that is if you don't look it up and the display is 1440p on the g3 and 1080p on the HTC m8 and the g3 has a better design
You seem to be the only phone reviewer that says the battery is not good, everyone else MKBHD, Android Authority, PocketNow say its almost identical to other phones with 1080p displays maybe a little bit worse within margin of error
Marques said it lasted 4.5 hours of screen time. Compared to 6 and even 7 hours that other flagships get, how the hell is that good? lol I think some other blogs are too afraid to say it's not that good? Or maybe they are too hopeful? Even the Z2 gets great battery life. I'm disgusted with this silly misinformation.
***** It has2 proper LTE bands to work in Europe. It's not the network killing the device. According to what is using the most power, it's definitely the display. The ONLY device that people are using in the US right now seem to be the Korean models. The same device that I am using for many....F400K... It is also using LTE. I doubt there is much difference between here and USA. BUT I will gladly get my hands on an American device and make an update video.
This is the best review I've seen on the LG G3. Other reviews I've seen i said to myself this display is just too dim and nobody's ever talked about that. She goes into great detail explaining the display which was awesome of her to do. I gotta tell you I'm not too impressed with that I need a bright display but we'll see how the us variants looks I have to get it in my hands to make my final judgement.
Phones is awesome. I have the Verizon version. The sharpening is gone but not in their messaging app I've noticed. The text looks funky there. I haven't tried using another messaging app so I font know if it's affected there too. Text on the other apps appears fine. Screen is noticeably dimmer and warmer than the G2. Something that bugged me at first. But you get used it to almost looks better imo. Love this phone. Gets pretty warm though. Never had that problem with the G2.
Something i learned was never compare your screen to another phone lol like ever! I had all the top end phones and b4 i bought the Lg G3 i put my s5 up to it and thought hmmmm its kinda a bit dim in comparison. But then my eyes got so used to the G3 that i started to find it to be too bright at night and have been satisfied with its screen as a whole. Even playing around with my old M7 i thought wow this screen is so terrible compared to all of the new phones, but after a few days with just the M7 i changed my mind and the screen looked great. Sure there are noticeable difference when you put them up against each other but on the other hand it can be all in your head.
The display on the American version of the G3 pumps out 455 nits, which is just as bright as the HTC One M7. Basically, it's pretty damn bright. From my understanding, the Korean G3 is only pumps out about 418 nits. After hearing all of these reviewers complain about the brightness on their Korean G3s, I was pleasantly surprised to see how bright it was when I got my hands on the American version in my T-Mobile store. I hope Erica will do a followup review with an American G3.
I will never understand battery complaints nowadays. If it lasts from morning to night that'll always be good enough for me cus I charge it every night regardless of leftover juice. Unless you're using it screen-on time the whole day, pretty much any of the top-tier phones will last you.
Me neither, since like 2012 that I had my first smartphone which was the Galaxy S2, people complained about battery life on that too (it was pretty bad on stock though, even for 2011-2012 standards), But I almost feel like laughing out loud with all complaints of people like "ooh, I have to charge my phone overnight or it won't last a week without charging", it's crazy, people complaining about the battery on HTC One M7 and other phones that I owned and they were complaining about getting less than 12 hours or so and when I reached 10hs I was happy. I haven't NOT charged a phone overnight every night since like 2006, I don't understand what the problem is, specially with a phone that has a removable battery, I think that if it's able to lats most of the day or work day with some juice left and you can charge it overnight that's pretty good, I also have an LG G3 D855 32gb.
Phone makers need to stop focusing on displays so much. 1080p is fine for most people. They need to switch their focus to battery life. 6-7 hours being fantastic battery life for a phone is pathetic IMO.
***** a solution (in my opinion) i guess is the development of organic batteries and general battery technology and probably borrowing from stuff like kinetic (sorry if spelt incorrectly) energy that can be found in some watches (using your own electrical pulse to charge the device) to help charge the phone or at least reduce battery drain - could be a feature that is used when holding the phone to make calls for example - in-bed it into the metal that runs around the sides of a lot of the premium phones?
matthew hayward I'm not sure humans generate enough electric energy to charge a phone, but some watches are powered by a mechanism that spins as you move your wrist, that might be something that can be adapted to smart phones.
Some of the statements you make in this video are unbelievable. There is a HUGE difference between a 1440p display and a 1080p display. I played around with my friend's phone which had a 1080p display (can't remember the name of the phone. It was a Windows phone so it was garbage and I didn't want to use it) and it looked terrible. The sharpening that LG did with their display looks fantastic for me, and you can't even tell when playing games or anything of that sort. Moving on to the brightness, I have to ask. Do you stand outside in the sun all day and use your G3 out there or what? My G3 gets extremely bright and I never have to turn it above 75% to get a comfortable brightness. Lastly, battery life. I've never heard any complaints about battery life and I have never had any problems with mine. While it doesn't have as great battery life as the most popular flagship phones, it is very close. It could be that you constantly have the screen brightness up, which shouldn't be necessary. The G3 is easily the second best smartphone on the market, behind the OnePlus One of course. Who doesn't love a smartphone running CyanogenMod from the box? :)
Oh, and if you're having persistent problems with the battery life, try switching your phone to ART runtime instead of Dalvik as long as your G3 isn't on Verizon Wireless.
"It was a Windows phone so it was garbage" Wow you are one biased fanboy. Brightness of a screen is subjective, not objective. Everyone has different tastes (and eyes) so what might look bright enough to you might look dark or not-so-bright to someone else. 4K is pretty much useless for a 5 inches display. You won't notice the difference with a 1080p display, unless you watch 4K videos (there aren't a lot for now) and photos (pretty useless since the G3 doesn't have any kind of 4K recording).
Not only because of this article , but when "all" is said by other blogers , I allways leave your "words" for last because they're the honest AND documented ones . Admirable work all the way ! Dedicated fan from Greece - Europe .
Erica, after I bought my G3, LG sent me a offer for a free extra battery and charger. It was a limited time offer so I took advantage of it! I'm happy to say that my G3 is performing well and I'm very pleased overall with this device. Thank you for your research and reporting on the G3, you helped me make the right choice.
Hi Tanner Goodmng i have been using lg g3 since 1 month........its a amazing set.............but i have a small problem sound related. After using few hours my loud speaker stops sound ........and sound goes to ear speaker ......even if make full volume sound gonna too small. and i have to restart device to set it again ?? If u anyone have any ideas to fix it plz ......???? i have formatted once but still the same problem
shankar kc, I sold my LG-G3 about a month ago and went back to Apple. I just had too many software problems that I found extremely annoying. I went back to the company I started with, Apple, because their devices work smoothly and reliably. I've learned a expensive lesson and being away from a iPhone for 2 months made me appreciate the iPhone even more now that I have one back.
Kindly discuss the following in your later review for the LG G3: 1) Screen visibility in direct sun light 2) If feasible, review a U.S. version of the LG G3(e.g. T-Mobile' edition) 3) Does the phone heat up when you do anything else with it besides gaming and using Google Maps? 4) Discuss, longevity of the battery life if the phone is used mostly for making calls, taking pictures, checking email, as an eReader(Nook) , and browsing the web 5) How well does the screen function (e.g. brightness) as a eReader 6) Call quality 7) Loudness and speaker clarify 8) Drop test if feasible(build quality)
Excellent review Erica. Finally someone telling it how it is. I've just sent my G3 back. Having previously owned a G2 i couldn't believe how bad the added sharpness was on the G3's display. Immediately it looked to me as if someone had gone to the settings of a TV and pumped the sharpness up to +5. God only knows why they did this, it's so ugly to look at. I much preferred the G2's screen and it didn't suck the battery dry so quickly. Contrast is also below par, especially blacks. Brightness too is lacking, especially in outdoor sunlight. Also my unit was the 32gb European version which has a widespread issue of randomly turning itself off. It would do this on average once every couple of days. Not great when you use your phone as an alarm! The UI, especially in animations is also very laggy. Comparing it side by side with the G2, the framerate of animations looks very low. On top of all this, the headphone jack was faulty. Any slight nudge would result in either a song pausing or skipping to the next track leaving listening to music on the go impossible. Really disappointed, loved the G2, but this product just feels rushed.
This may be too late, but the camera not showing up on the lock screen after holding the button down is because it is asking you what app do you want to use as a default on your homescreen. So, if you hold down the down volume button and don't see anything check your home screen for any popups.
i got my g3 a month ago and i was starting to regret buying this phone too, but i found a solution for that battery life issue.. i lowered the brightness to 60%, closed and uninstalled running apps (these apps continues on running even if its closed or not used atm) and installed DU Battery saver.. now im loving my phone.. slept 6-8hrs with 100% battery and waking up with 99-98% and with moderate usage for like 7-8hours, i can say that this phone's battery life is way more better than iphones and samsung in my opinion specially when going outside for whole day.. the only thing that bothers me with this phone is the heating issue when playing games on g3 .. but since this is a high end phone, then why dont just buy a TAB, PSP or GAMEBOY for gaming purposes right? ^_^ sorry about my english :)
I have mine on 50% brightness, disabled useless apps, turned off gestures, and auto sync. WiFi only don't even have a carrier yet, 4 hours of battery life. Checked the battery usge and everything is below 10 Percent use except screen. Screen ues 70% battery. It's on 50% brightness! T mobile version.
By the way, Knock Code works anywhere on the display- not just in the center and you can enter your Knock Code in a grid size as small or as large as you want.
You are right. This is exactly why it's so easy to do the wrong combination with a big long code. Practically everyone is going to type in a very small area. So if the code is long and you tap in a small space...imagine how easy it gets to accidentally tap a little too much in the wrong spot.
Great review as always! The lack of brightness and contrast, plus the decreased battery life means I will be holding on to my G2 for a bit longer. Thank you for helping me make that decision. I've been saying I wouldn't be able to brag about having a quad HD display when everyone else is holding a brighter screen with a higher contrast ratio. Quad HD seems like too much of a compromise right now.
the sharpening issue has been found not to relate the display but actually the kernel used, there is now a fix kernel that gets rid of the over sharpening on XDA
excellent, now i can buy this phone, but what about lag ?? i found this comment at some sites, please answer "Things I dislike: 1. Quad-HD screen. I've downloaded some 2k wallpapers to fully appreciate this quad HD screen (By the way, Quad-HD and 2K are same). To be fair, those 2k resolution images look pretty amazing on this phone. But that's about it. For every day use, like texting, browsing web, etc, having a quad-HD does absolutely nothing, it only makes the phone noticeably slower, which leads me to #2 2. Lag. I come from iPhone 4 (running iOS 7), so I know what lag is. And this phone has it, surprisingly and unbelievably a lot, too. Sometimes I wonder if this phone has more lag than my iPhone that is 4 years old. One time, I needed to check what time it was, so I pressed the power button. The screen turned on roughly about 2 seconds later (lag), froze for about 4 seconds (more lag), and finally updated the clock after ~6 seconds of lag. Now, I'm not a heavy user; I have maybe 15 apps at most, and I always turn off apps after I use them. Still, I notice lag quite frequently, and while it's bearable now, I fear that after 1+ years of use, it may become quite unbearable. I can only hope that LG phones have longevity... By comparison, I notice much more lag on this phone than I do on my Galaxy S5."
Dido to tito's comment .. Truly the best review I've seen so far.. Very impressive details and overview of the saturation and sharpening effects... And i also am appreciative of the battery review, its my main concern on purchasing a phone... I think I'll be getting a g2 for the time being, which will also allow some time to pass and see if a prime version will be released as I've been hoping for a device with with a 805 or 810 chip...Thank you
Hi Erica, Had mine for a week, I cannot fault the battery life.First two days it was awful, but on the third day I got a software update. I am a medium to heavy user. I charged it 7am yesterday, this morning I had 58% battery life left.I reckon I could squeeze two days out of it. Overall happy with the Lg G3.
I had my LG G3 D852 model since it came out in Canada. I keep my brightness at 38% most of the time and my battery lasts two days. If I'm conservative enough i can go a day with only using 5-10% of battery life in a day!
I've got an LG g3 eu version and the screen is very bright I also have an HTC one and the screen is brighter than that on the htc and the battery life lasts all day ...I think battery life gets better with use overtime !
The camera shortcut problem on ~18.00 might be caused by your finger or something blocks the proximity sensor near the earpiece. My G2 also do the same "not responding" thing if I block the proximity sensor & press the camera shortcut key. I think it is actually pretty cool, it detects when your phone is on your pocket so it doesn't drain the battery if the shortcut key accidentally pressed.
I noticed that, on your video, you had the auto-brightness still toggled, while you were moving the slider. Contrary to other devices, where auto-brightness gets de-toggled when moving the slider, the G3 allows manual adjustment (while still having auto-brightness toggled). If you un-check the auto-brightness toggle, the brightness goes up a lot and is much more significant. I wouldn't have known that, until I finally purchased the phone this past Friday.
Erica Griffin You got yourself a subscriber, your in-depth reviews are second to none, keep up the good work. Looking forward to the Oppo Find 7 review; it is between that and the Find 7a as an upgrade to the Nexus 4. Sadly the Oneplus One doesn't support UK LTE bands.
That's why I just love your reviews, Erica, cause u r always saying the naked truth about devices... None of other "big" reviewers do not mention about sharpening, poor display quality, bad battery life, also lagging interface?!...
I've had this phone for about 2 weeks now and I gotta say the battery life is amazing and the quality it pretty sick! it'll last me about a day and a half even if i'm playing video games. my only complaint is sometimes the home buttons are unresponsive for about 3 seconds.
are you mad?? not bright enough??? I have the G3 and I use 21% brightness. That's more than enough if you are inside, even outside if the sun doesn't hit the screen directly. I'm quite inexpert but the image quality looks mind blowing to me. A square? really?? do a cross or something, repeat a spot, that's a welcome card, not a "key code" or whatever
I like that your videos talk about saturation, contrast, and nits. I f***in hate that no one talk about nits or microns in the camera. I'm wondering what is lowest nits you can use, and put it on future videos.
I agree with what you are saying about the quad HD display... I rather have a slightly brighter display for when I am outside in the day time... Other than that, I think that the LG G3 is worth a look... Now, I have added that to my choices of upgrades when I get my next device here shortly...
So, Erica Griffin , what would you get, an S5 or a G3? I want to retire my Galaxy S2 and I really liked the G3, until I saw your review and the disappointing screen and battery. Looking forward for your in-depht review!
Erica I just have to say, I've now got this in The UK and the battery life is amazing. I've never had a phones battery last as long as this. I have an iPhone 5s at moment and it has worst battery life Ive had. A very close second to ridiculous battery is the htc M7, awful and the battery takes ages to charge. I don't know about comparing to say Galaxy S5, but you have to say it blows away those two I mentioned.
I'm not sure if this has been addressed, but the bug you mentioned might have been because you were covering the proximity sensor at the time. Its so that you don't trigger the shortcut in your pocket. I had the G2 mini and had the problem of it turning on when I didn't want to and found it really annoying as it heavily drained my battery.
I agree about the display. I saw it at the store at full brightness, and it was still too dim. Also some people complain about this phone overheating all the time.
Thanks for the awesome video- really enjoyed the insights into the display. I think I'll be sticking with my HTC One M8, but this looks like a sweet phone!
I have had my 32 GB LG G3 for a week now and no problems what so ever battery life is great and the LG G3 mobile phone does not lag for me it's a fantastic mobile phone.. I prefer it over the HTC one m8. The htc m8 specs and feature already seem somewhat outdated and old It's great to hear htc one m9 have added the specs and features the public wanted and demanded now if the m8 had 5.5 screen with a better camera and battery life then by all means I would if got the htc one m8 hence those are the features for the oncoming new m9... LG G3 is a great phone The phone to look out for 2015 is the Sony xperia z4
i agree with you and hopefully you will reply for this and you can deactivate the ''over sharpening'' in settings and it is automaticly on when you get the phone
I think there is something wrong with her eyes. My G3 outshines ANY other phones in brightness and My God battery life..I don't know what you're doing wrong but I don't even have to plug my G3 in overnight. I've have more battery life than any Samsung phone including the Notes.. Being an EVERYDAY owner.. I can't agree with this video at all.. Sorry Erica and I've compared it to a few..
tried g3 kept for demo at Verizon store, really liked the bright white display got the phone and found it was dull as it says in video, store representative tried to replace it with other unit but it was dull as well. They called lg and explained the difference between demo units and sale units. LG asked me to ship my cell to them so that they can look into it.
Avi J Sorry to hear that. I know my display goes dim on auto and battery saver but never been so dim or dull that my pictures or anything else looks bad. It might be Verizon that is the problem since they altered the phone as usual..like the fonts. Good luck with whatever you get but I can tell you I am loving my G3 with no regrets. ;-) coming from a Note 2 as well..
My Note 2 finally died. I was thinking another Note (Galaxy Note 3), but opted for something unique and different for a change, thus I ordered myself an Unlocked Silk White 32GB G3. Please tell me I won't regret having chosen it over the Galaxy Note 3?
YESSS you are the first person that I know that you think the same, I tried the LG G3 and the screen looks HORRIBLE! It's like a 720p display hahah I used a note 3 for example and this problem doesn't happen, well, kisses from Argentina ;)
I would rather have a removable battery any day over a few extra hrs of screen on time lets add 4hrs on screen time x2 for the extra battery.Every device I have owned i keep extra batteries all over and never have to be tied to a outlet. 1 at home, 1 in the car, 1 in the office, and 1 in pocket when traveling long days it beat hanging out near outlets any day.
Erica, I was surprised you didn't mention the ability to adjust the overall size of the keyboard. There was also a recent power management software update you should install.
I own the 16GB G3 and it's a damn good devicel. The battery lasts a day with the brightness at 50% and at auto. The only time I've experienced lag is after a fresh boot up or after a software update, otherwise, a pretty smooth device. The only thing I don't like about the screen is the over sharpening, it looks ugly; but to be honest, I haven't noticed it much after using the device for a while. Otherwise, it's a good device. So overall, it's a decent device.
Erica...thanks for recommending the site you mentioned, I had a look at it no bad at all, previously I had a look on amazon, but your video feed had help me understand the negatives detail to the phone and positive indetail features on this phone, but I don't know what colour to get...lol...!!!
Hi Erica, could you please confirm if the G3 camcorder has the "zoom-in effect" (narrower field of view than that of the camera) at 1080p and 4K mode? Thanks.
Finally, a fair and honest review. All the others say since it's good only because of the 2K resolution. The quality of this screen is horrible, it's not all about numbers. I would take a 1080p phone over this any day. Your reviews and Mobiletechreview's are the only fair, honest, and unbiased reviews on RUclips
Good honest opinion of the G3 it's very obvious to me that QHD is not going to make that much of a difference, but just seeing the oppo find 7 looks more of a design elegance. But you also have the oneplus one with all the hype surrounding this phone I would be hard pressed to ignore it. I look forward to see your reviews on the oppo 7 and oneplus.
Erica the hiding on screen buttons is not a new thing - Android 4.2 introduced immersive mode which removes the bars and makes it full screen if possible. It has to be coded support into by developers of apps, but there is a app called Immersive that makes any app full screen. Must have for M8.
My LG G2 running cm11 4.4.4 gets 6-7 hours of screen on time .. Usually closer to 6 when I'm listening to music and web browsing.. Just a total beast with cm11
Did u custom install cm11 or did you use the auto installer? And are you using the AT&T version? I'm looking to root my phone but don't know the safest way of doing it
wow, i was wondered about, that you use that program for checking display, you are the first youtube reviewer. you are not the only blogger, who says, that its not that good, like many people say, for excample gsmarena says the same, and about camera with its slowmotion...
People are just blinded by Lg's QuadHd display feature but they forget other smartphones also has QuadHD screens as well. Like you said QuadHD screens seems to be more like a test, they were not ready yet and they need some time to solve stuff with sharpening and brightness, just like 1080p was in the beginning like S4 or the ZL/Z. I've seen G3's personally and it looks awesome, you need some time to realize that has a bit issues with sharpening, it's hard to tell only by seing once. I'm pretty glad with my Z1 but sometimes the screen bothers me by being a little bit washed out some times, I'm really into going back to Samsung or even LG, since HTC, Oppo or One Plus One aren't available in Brazil.
People saying the phone hasn't got the best battery life(including the reviewer)-Are you kidding me?Over nine hours of heavy usage is not enough for you?My current LG Nexus 4 lasts four hours when trying to do something with it(2100mah battery) and that is on auto brightness(which also brings me to the brightness point-anything lower than 70% ain't bright enough?Really?!).The phone is quite good, only problem and a big one would be the overheating(please keep in mind that everything on this phone-3G/4G/WiFi/Graphics/CPU is on one chip-meaning that if that shit overheats so fast,in an year max that phone is dead).
That 9 hours was off the charger not actual usage time. 9 hours with 4 hours screen on time isn't good at all but about what I would expect from a 5.5" QHD IPS LCD. My Nexus 5 can get 4 hours screen on time with 12-15 hours off the charger depending on what I'm doing. I consider that pretty bad.

Was looking to get this phone when it came out. But after hearing many reviews talk about the lack of brightness on its LCD display, made me wonder if I really wanted to deal with the problems of viewing the display in direct sunlight. Had this problem with my og droid incredible and my galaxy nexus. Both AMOLED displays. HTC's LCD displays are beautiful and very bright, and they seem to always have the right amount of brightness when auto brightness is enabled. I could be wrong but, I believe Sharp provides HTC with their LCD panels.. But anyway.. I went with the GS5.. This display is awesome while using it out doors....
Can't wait your next video. G2 vs G3. I have two devices (F320S and F400S) and I can see the display a little different between of them specially the white colors.
I have a G2 and Note 3 and have to say the G2 has a dimmer display than the Note 3. Samsung's AMOLEDs are definitely brighter in general than other phones. However, I do love my G2 with its 1080p display and it has great battery life. I find LG's knock on/off (off by tapping twice on the notification bar) and button placement features extremely helpful. I basically use the Note 3 for watching videos in bed and the G2 for everything else.
I just love my LG G3 (16 GB model Europe, Belgium). Got it a few weeks ago (thanks to your review). It's the best Phone I ever owned. The only downside is indeed the plastic casing. Really fragile :-S
What are your initial thoughts on battery life and display brightness in direct sunlight? Currently, I am using a G2 and love it. The screen is sharp and I keep it at 50% brightness unless I am walking outside and it's sunny. Then I increase it to full brightness. However, at full brightness it still seems that it could be brighter. My phone is charged just once a day. I am concerned about the G3's screen draining the battery quickly. I also want the next phone to have a crisper and louder speaker. I am upgrading soon and would like to have expandable memory in the new phone. So I am deciding between the S5 and the G3. Which would you recommend?
Erica can you voice an opinion on whether or not the G3 is worth an upgrade from a G2 in your full review. I do own a G2 and have done some modifications to get extra features that may or may not be innate in the G3. Would a G3 be worth it to a savvy Andriod user? Or is the LG G2 the best bang for buck of the two? In your opinion. I think you are great and i respect your points of views.
Just got the lg g3 and its way too awesome inside and out. Screen is way too insanely sharp. It can be a good and bad thing. It strains my eye muscles trying to adjust to the resolution. It literally feels like wearing someone else prescription glasses by just looking at the screen. I actually have to lower the brightness to help my eyes out. With that said I'm a sucker for crazy specs. Definitely best phone so far!
I see I guess I have been too distracted by the physical LCD texture that I couldn't notice the finer quality aspects of the picture. I'm surprised this isn't something mentioned on any review, I looked through many and only you barely touched up on it. I think it's one of the phones biggest let down about its display above all else. I know other phones like the htc one did show some but you would have to look hard to see it.
Good start with this review ... give it a full work out to see how the battery does would be great... I think you might be right about the screen brightness level.
you said the battery is that great but what about phone arena's battery g3 battery test? according to them it's got better battery life than any other smartphone
I found you G2 review so insightful that it was the deciding factor. I'm now looking for a new phone and am seeing one feature being ignored by reviewers: Voice Recognition. The G2 I have is from from T-Mobile, and since they updated the OS to Kit-Kat 4.4.2, it has an utterly useless voice recognition. My state, Utah, just enacted a law where you can be fined $100 for interacting with the screen while driving, so voice recognition is of utmost importance. So what I am asking is: How are the VR features of the G3? What are the best / good phones for VR? Oh, and please could you make that a feature you regularly check on phones you review? Thanks Again. Love the G2 ( minus the VR derp...)
Thanks a lot, I've been hesitating between G2, G3 and S5, but G3 makes no sense, because what can you do with the beautiful screen if the battery only survives half a day if you don't touch the phone! I have also tried an S5, and that's great but the keyboard is horribly small again! I have a big hand, so I decided to go for a G2, because that's suitable for my hands and there is only a tiny little difference compared to the G3!
it happen to me twice that i put the lg g3 charging, during the nigth with the battery below 15% the phone is off the next day on the mornign . I dont understand why.
I am also a person that likes a nice bright display, I am Still using a Galaxy Note 2... This has a nice bright display, but even this is hard to view in sunlight. I am a gardner, so i am always outdoors. I was considering Upgrading to the G3 but after seeing this, i don't think it would be much use as my daily driver. It just wouldn't be practical.
One problem is that 1080p content will often look better on 1080p screen than on a 1440p screen. But then again 720p content usually looks better on 1440p screen than on a 1080p screen...
Erica thanks for another amazingly informative review. Can you clarify one thing; the GSMArena review has a top brightness measurement much higher than yours, did you really say the 100% brightness output is less than 400 nits? Also can you check carefully what the brightness output is at the 65% for which you tested the battery life; according to GSMArena's review the brightness output at 50% is only 1/6 of its top brightness output, which means your test occurred at only slightly above that output level. Most phones map 50% on the slider to 50% nits, so a direct comparison of phones at the same slider % is not fair. I think a lot of people are getting confused by LG's weird way of mapping slider %es to levels of actual brightness output and overestimating the LG G3's battery life on that basis.
You do good reviews Erica. BUT you need to speed up! Its difficult to concentrate without me speeding up to 1.25x. So, maybe you should take care of it in post processing. But I am a fan of your in depth reviews.
Guys.. same thing happens with the G2 when it came out, was better overall than the other androids, but once rooting, custom ROMs, and kernels came into play the game was changed and the LGG2 took over. I mean just when it comes to hardware and the rooted 4.4 with Overclock kernel my LG G2 d801 is sooooo much faster then the S5's I have came across. Just wait until XDA devs come up with the fun software stuff we all love :D
Root your phone with xda do the guide it says for 4.4.2 I'm running stock rom. Dorimanx v4.8 over clock kernel which has some crazy battery save features as well as performance tweaks the app that I use along with it to control it is called STweaks
Erica Griffin I have a colorimeter, but no spectrometer, i just got my g2 to a relatively perfect 6473k color temp, so for me there is no need for a spectrometer. Still i enjoy watching your videos and cant wait for a full indepth review. I may buy the g3 just for its display because it seems to have potential other than the color shifting and contrast problems. For example... if i take the time and calibrate it correctly i can fix most of the displays gripes, especially brightness, i got my htc one m8's display to about 538 nits, its amazing what android phones can do when devs put their mind to.
Coming from the Nexus 4, I get like 3hrs of on-screen time and could get through the day if I have REALLY minimal use. But on typical I play music (not stream) from the Google Play Music app, use Tumblr, Snapchat, and browse the web on average. I also typically keep the display low on the Nexus 4 (at 0 or just about usually). Basically, I'm not a heavy user. I don't game, take tons of pictures/videos, constantly have the screen on bright, surf the web, and so on and so on. So how would the LG G3 last me with that same use? Because I hate the battery life on the Nexus 4. It's the worst I've ever had with a phone (my Galaxy S3 was better and also my iPhone 4). I mostly ask because this phone is high on the list of phones I would like to get, along with the Moto X+1 and I want to check out the Note 4. I]'m also tempted on waiting till Q1 or Q2 of next year and hold out for phones with the Snapdragon 808 or 810. And mostly wait to see Project Ara phones. Also camera is important as well, but I feel that can be a bit more subjective at times.
LOL I'm sure I will get plenty of complaints for saying something different about the display from other bloggers and even about the battery life but at least for the display you can have your opinion but you can't argue against measurements. They are a scientific fact. I will always try to get you the most accurate information. Some won't like it but at least it is there for you to see =)
Don't bite the hands of those who are trying to help move the industry forward for better display quality.
Very true 💯
True 🔝💯
Erica Griffin true
Erica Griffin like I don't get it I have a lg g3 and it has 1440p display and my dad has a HTC m8 the g3 has a better camera it records at 4k if you know what that is if you don't look it up and the display is 1440p on the g3 and 1080p on the HTC m8 and the g3 has a better design
***** note 4 battery life isn't good at all either. I am using samsung note 4. The battery life is not that great as it is mentioned.
Erica Griffin I'm getting
^
***** It has2 proper LTE bands to work in Europe. It's not the network killing the device. According to what is using the most power, it's definitely the display. The ONLY device that people are using in the US right now seem to be the Korean models. The same device that I am using for many....F400K... It is also using LTE. I doubt there is much difference between here and USA. BUT I will gladly get my hands on an American device and make an update video.
Catslasha Catz woah bro. Its 2 ½ and yes I know I was just saying I'm using a phone that gets ½ the sot so yea 4 hrs is good
This is the best review I've seen on the LG G3. Other reviews I've seen i said to myself this display is just too dim and nobody's ever talked about that. She goes into great detail explaining the display which was awesome of her to do. I gotta tell you I'm not too impressed with that I need a bright display but we'll see how the us variants looks I have to get it in my hands to make my final judgement.
tito nieves and shes not hard to look at either. Nerds are feeling akward watching this one lol.
You're only watching this on youtube so of course it may look dim.
Son Goku everybody that I know that has one tells me the same thing
Same that happen to Oppo when they first introduced 1080p to a smartphone now it became a norm maybe later in time you will think 2k is a norm
Couldn't agree more.
You won't notice the difference with a 1080p display, unless you watch 4K videos (there aren't a lot for now) and photos (pretty useless since the G3 doesn't have any kind of 4K recording).
coap Not biased. Give me a good reason that a Windows phone is superior, because I couldn't find any.
***** Well no review I watched about it mentioned 4K recording.
Not only because of this article , but when "all" is said by other blogers , I allways leave your "words" for last because they're the honest AND documented ones . Admirable work all the way ! Dedicated fan from Greece - Europe .
I love her! c: She doesn't think all the phones are perfect, she looks for the pros and con's on all phone! c: Cant wait for more reviews!
Hi Tanner Goodmng
i have been using lg g3 since 1 month........its a amazing set.............but i have a small problem sound related.
*****, no big deal, I sold it.
Great review. One of most technical and to the point review of any gadget i have seen on youtube.
Kindly discuss the following in your later review for the LG G3:
1) Screen visibility in direct sun light
2) If feasible, review a U.S. version of the LG G3(e.g. T-Mobile' edition)
3) Does the phone heat up when you do anything else with it besides gaming and using Google Maps?
4) Discuss, longevity of the battery life if the phone is used mostly for making calls, taking pictures, checking email, as an eReader(Nook) , and browsing the web
5) How well does the screen function (e.g. brightness) as a eReader
6) Call quality
7) Loudness and speaker clarify
8) Drop test if feasible(build quality)
sorry about my english :)
Thanks Erica for the great info. Your reviews are so helpful. Please keep us up to date on the g3. I use the g2 and just love it. Thanks again.
Wow, you got a new subscriber right here! Never seen such an in-depth review :)
the sharpening issue has been found not to relate the display but actually the kernel used, there is now a fix kernel that gets rid of the over sharpening on XDA
excellent, now i can buy this phone, but what about lag ??
i found this comment at some sites, please answer
"Things I dislike:
1. Quad-HD screen. I've downloaded some 2k wallpapers to fully appreciate this quad HD screen (By the way, Quad-HD and 2K are same). To be fair, those 2k resolution images look pretty amazing on this phone. But that's about it. For every day use, like texting, browsing web, etc, having a quad-HD does absolutely nothing, it only makes the phone noticeably slower, which leads me to #2
Nicely done Erica.
thanks for the review. Battery is very important to me as I am away from power sources for long stretches
I really like the look of the LG G3 and the HTC one. I think I'll get the LG g3 though since the camera quality is poor on the HTC one
Great preview as always , nice hair too :) thanks for all your good reviews !
Great battery life (read 1 day+) is the #1 app or feature request for new smartphones. If the LG G3 doesn't pass this test, it's off my wish-list.
Been waiting for this thanks for another great review =)
I'm not sure if this has been addressed, but the bug you mentioned might have been because you were covering the proximity sensor at the time.
Its so that you don't trigger the shortcut in your pocket.
I had the G2 mini and had the problem of it turning on when I didn't want to and found it really annoying as it heavily drained my battery.
Does it support art or just dalvik? if it does could you check how using art impacts battery life?
I agree about the display. I saw it at the store at full brightness, and it was still too dim. Also some people complain about this phone overheating all the time.
Thanks for the awesome video- really enjoyed the insights into the display. I think I'll be sticking with my HTC One M8, but this looks like a sweet phone!
I have had my 32 GB LG G3 for a week now and no problems what so ever battery life is great and the LG G3 mobile phone does not lag for me it's a fantastic mobile phone..
I prefer it over the HTC one m8.
The htc m8 specs and feature already seem somewhat outdated and old
It's great to hear htc one m9 have added the specs and features the public wanted and demanded now if the m8 had 5.5 screen with a better camera and battery life then by all means I would if got the htc one m8 hence those are the features for the oncoming new m9...
LG G3 is a great phone
The phone to look out for 2015 is the Sony xperia z4
i agree with you and hopefully you will reply for this and you can deactivate the ''over sharpening'' in settings and it is automaticly on when you get the phone
I think it's the wallpaper she uses, looks pretty dark.I have a way lighter wallpaper.
Max Payne Agreed and same here
tried g3 kept for demo at Verizon store, really liked the bright white display got the phone and found it was dull as it says in video, store representative tried to replace it with other unit but it was dull as well.
It's like a 720p display hahah I used a note 3 for example and this problem doesn't happen, well, kisses from Argentina
;)
Hey Erica Griffin Try to get a European variant. I heard they improved the display color and brightness.
Where you heard it?
Good review, I have had mine now for about 3 days and so far I love it
before that I had a iphone 5.I like the g3 better.
I'm looking to root my phone but don't know the safest way of doing it
Jake Sundberg towelroot and installed twrp I backed up everything and got cm11 specifically for d801 (T-Mobile)
Woooh all these phones, I had the chance to come and check this video for the 2nd time.. expect to have me coming through your window soon. Thanks.
You are a beautiful phone reviewer in whole RUclips community .... love you :*...
It seems you failed to discover that the G3's knock on has more than quadrants. There are also tap timings.
wow, i was wondered about, that you use that program for checking display, you are the first youtube reviewer. you are not the only blogger, who says, that its not that good, like many people say, for excample gsmarena says the same, and about camera with its slowmotion...
FYI, enabling art runtime om my LG G3 (international version) gave me a boost of about 1.5 extra hours in battery stamina!
Please research on display in sunlight, if possible difference between Samsung GS3. And how is the GPS reception.
Couldn't have said it better. thanks
I bought the phone and am glad to say that the battery life is impresive for that screen.Just keep in mind that I am using it in about 35% brightness.

My G3 didn't come with the extra battery, but the telco gave those who pre ordered a lg quick circle case and wireless charger.
If feasible, do a comparison between an LG G3 running Cyanogenmod and the LG G3 running its OEM ROM.
I typically get anywhere from 6-7 hours screen on time on my Note 3, if I don't game too much. Brightness stays somewhere between 20-30%
Great reviews, honest and unbiased.(unlike some reviewers :).. Can you please do an indepth review for the HTC One m8
I think the reason for the 60fps option don't exist should be the fact of the 60fps is the default for 720p and 1080p modes
Z2 review please
Did you know that you can also double tap on any blank area in the home-screen to sleep the device?
5:00 That sharpening i think is the LCD digitizer, and i hate it. Defeats the purpose of a quad hd! Stands out too much.
Indeed the digitizer is very very apparent and makes the display look bad. But it's nothing to do with the sharpening.
And about the oversharpening of the icons. What if as a developer I put borders around it, that would be considered as oversharpening?
Just FYI or you might have already known about this, LG G3 natively shoots at 2160P30, 1080P60, 720P60.
Miyabi Igarashi 720p 120fps
Thanks a lot, I've been hesitating between G2, G3 and S5, but G3 makes no sense, because what can you do with the beautiful screen if the battery only survives half a day if you don't touch the phone! I have also tried an S5, and that's great but the keyboard is horribly small again! I have a big hand, so I decided to go for a G2, because that's suitable for my hands and there is only a tiny little difference compared to the G3!
Bet you're really gonna love the new Note 4. From all the rumors is sounds soooo good.
Erica, Can your eyes notice the diference between 1080p and QHD? I think thats the big question besides numbers and proves.
it happen to me twice that i put the lg g3 charging, during the nigth with the battery below 15% the phone is off the next day on the mornign . I dont understand why.
Thanks for "helping to move the industry forward"
I am also a person that likes a nice bright display, I am Still using a Galaxy Note 2... This has a nice bright display, but even this is hard to view in sunlight. I am a gardner, so i am always outdoors. I was considering Upgrading to the G3 but after seeing this, i don't think it would be much use as my daily driver. It just wouldn't be practical.
Note 4 man...
Yeah, very true... I have got a bit longer on my contract anyway so perhaps the Note 4 will be worth waiting for! :)
I think a lot of people are getting confused by LG's weird way of mapping slider %es to levels of actual brightness output and overestimating the LG G3's battery life on that basis.
correction, most phones map 50% on the slider to 33% nits, but that's still twice as high as what LG does.
LCTesla it's samsung that maps it to 50%.
Just saying if i can get almost 3 days of battery life out of my g2 using wifi and using phone as normal, i'm sure the G3 is better.
Tony Roberts 3 days!! Teach me!! Thats amazing how are you getting that good of a performance?
Root your phone with xda do the guide it says for 4.4.2 I'm running stock rom. Dorimanx v4.8 over clock kernel which has some crazy battery save features as well as performance tweaks the app that I use along with it to control it is called STweaks
Do you think the display calibration issues could be solved with a mod or installing a new rom? Or is it baked into the display?
It cannot be solved with a new rom or mod, no.
Erica Griffin what about faux display settings. Its possible to get better brightness range and color temp with it.
Good luck doing any of that without a colorimeter and spectrometer
Erica Griffin I have a colorimeter, but no spectrometer, i just got my g2 to a relatively perfect 6473k color temp, so for me there is no need for a spectrometer. Still i enjoy watching your videos and cant wait for a full indepth review. I may buy the g3 just for its display because it seems to have potential other than the color shifting and contrast problems. For example... if i take the time and calibrate it correctly i can fix most of the displays gripes, especially brightness, i got my htc one m8's display to about 538 nits, its amazing what android phones can do when devs put their mind to.
yes you can..i have done it on my nexus 5 with franco's display control..
