This video reminds me of my 15 month Newfoundland my water rescue dog. Since the age of 7 months she has been taking my hand with glove on, which is one of THE exercises for bringing "casualties" to the boat or shore. It was natural to her to take my hand or anyones hand who is with her in the water. We were all surprised at her gentleness when the hand was in her big mouth. Some dogs do bite darn hard. At home she was taught to be kind and gentle with my 9 cats. Thanks for sharing, caring and helping all dog trainers and owners to be successful. I am not a dog trainer but I train my dog for water rescue with the Newfie Club. Appreciate the time you take to make your videos and post them on RUclips. Love your daughters plea and respect for her Dad. Hugs from your fan in France. 💕👍👍👍🍾🍾🍾🐾🐾🐾🐕🐕🐕
I have a Wire Hair still really a pup at 2.5. It worked great with step #1 as she is very soft. Moving on to #2 seemed ok in beginning. Is there a good bench mark to know when to move on? Say when she opens mouth to take PVC on her own? What do you suggest?
Larry what do you do when the dog brings the ball back but does not want to give you the ball and almost bites you when you try to get the ball from him!
Hello I'm new to the pet dog world and absolutely love your way of teaching. My Doberminpincher is only 2 months old, but I'll definitely be tuning in to your Chanel for advice & lessons.
I did that to my dog to stop him from biting when he was young. He’s now addicted to gloves and everywhere we go he will find one. He may even take the gloves off your hands if you’re not paying attention.
Hi, I'm sucking up all of your videos as my Mal will be moving in next week and I want to be prepared all around, but what is forced fetch used for? I'm confused about this, I just don't understand...this is diff from regular fetch?
De' Swann I’ve been doing dog training for a while now. The answer to your question. When you have completely finished forced fetch The dog will retrieve and return on command It’s pretty fascinating.
Larry, I'm watching your forced fetch in order, not watching #2 until I get #1 accomplished. Started today with my 7 month dobie. She has clamped jaw, I can get it open, I know how, used to be a vet tech, but when I put my gloved hand in, she does not fight me, she sits calm and she bites down, not too hard but hard enough to feel the molars and glad I have glove on. Should I just keep working until she loosens the grip a bit, use a bigger glove? Thanks. I love your techniques.
Great video and I am working with my lab on this. He is 18 months old and we just got him. He is not big on fetch but I am hoping to take him to be a bird dog. Question, what is a good gauge to determine when the dog is ready for step 2?
This is one video I wish I had NEVER found. Endeavoring to teach a FORCED fetch to my dog I damaged our relationship. Fortunately I found tutorial videos that have a radically different approach to teaching a soft mouth hold and retrieving. This is one video I wish you would remove from the Internet. PLEASE
Jesus Christ man... if the dam dog can't get the message of fetch and return without someone stuffing there fucking gloved hand down the dogs throat then the dog can pick it up as you throw what ya want it to fetch again and again... they will chase most things that are thrown!!!my two Dobermans were fetching at the age of 4mths without shoving NOTHING down their throats...it's a horrible thing to do... !!☹
It seems like you could accomplish this faster if you removed the unpleasant stimuli of having the dog tolerate the glove in his mouth and just shaped the behavior by marking and rewarding for interest in the object -> mouth on object -> sustained mouth on object? That way you're not having to counter condition.
Agree. It's not positive reinforcement to make a dog stressed or uncomfortable. You ignore behaviour you don't want, reward behaviour you do want. The negative stuff has no value in training. (Victoria Stilwell would never sanction this method)
@@sarahholland2600 Victoria Stillwell? Victoria Stillwell? We don’t need no stinking Victoria Stillwell. This is not a Purely Positive site. As such, you should know that following Victoria Stillwell’s ideas regarding dog training is not high on the list of priorities.
My coonhound absolutely gnaws my hand off when I try doing this, I'm on day two and done it about 4 times now with him. I have a tough one! we are also shaping on top of this!
I have been doing your first step in the forced fetch for 3 weeks now on my female shepherd and she still doesn’t want to grab the item by herself. Do I keep doing the first step til she grabs it by herself?
Never seen it done that way. But with a gun dog you teach forced fetch. I wouldn't waste 5 minutes on a shepherd!! A natural retriever can quit on you, probably in the field. A forced fetch retriever never quits. But that ain't even similar to the way it is taught.
Negative is not putting a glove in the mouth , that's positive (cause u add the glove) punishment (cause he doesn't t like it) ... Positive is add , negative is remove ... Not weather the dog likes it or not.
Nope, its negative reinforcement because it is prolonged pressure. Sure you have to add it to begin but you are looking at it from a simplistic point of view. Cessation of slip lead pressure is R- but it must begin at some stage, its the same in this example with the hand. Many people confuse this.
Jayne Petzke look up the definition of negative reinforcement...it's mostly used as a psychology term and negative is when you remove something. He's doing the opposite.
Hes using the terms incorrectly but so are you. positive doesn't mean something the dog likes and negative doesn't mean something the dog doesn't like. It means application or removal of a stimulus. He is using negative reinforcement here. Hes starting to do something to the dog that the dog does not like, and waiting for him to offer a behavior (stop moving and hold still) to switch it off. It's negative reinforcement. Removing something, which is the negative part, that the dog doesn't like in order to reinforce or increase a behavior. It's pretty confusing. Aside from the terminology stuff, this is just dumb. There are positive ways to teach a dog to pick up objects in their mouths and hold them softly until you tell them to release them. This causes the dog stress, hes pairing it up with a recall which is really dumb because you should never call a dog over to you and then do something he doesn't like that's a great way to weaken your recall cue. It's also a great way to establish a negative (bad) association with the place command or jumping up on the chair. There are plenty of positive ways to teach a dog to fetch items they wouldn't normally fetch and hold them softly in their mouths. this is stupid and unnecessary advice that's gonna get a lot of dog owners in conflicting situations if not bitten. This happens to be a high drive working breed dog that can handle a lot of stress and conflict in exchange for a reward but most people's pet dogs would not handle of this as well. I'm not saying this as some vegan bleeding heart liberal whatever before anybody comments that. I'm saying this as a dog trainer.
Michael Daugherty No they're right. It is negative reinforcement. Your correct that negative has to do with the removal of something. But you're getting confused with the order of events. If the dog offered I behavior he did not like such as jumping or barking and he shoved his glove in his mouth as a punishment for it that would be positive punishment. Adding something the dog does not like to decrease a behavior. The dog was doing nothing and he shoved his hand inside his mouth which caused the dog's stress. He continued applying the stress until the dog offered the behavior he Wanted and then removed his hand period of this is negative reinforcement. It's confusing.
the moment my god smells the treats she will stop playing with the ball and simply wants to be close to me trying to get more food. I can't teach her to go fetch.
ONE of the best methods ofteaching force retrieve is with a nerve hitch. This is done with German Shorthaired Pointers. This is done tying a chord around a dogs front leg and pulling on it. A y dog will open its mouth because he will think his paw is in s trap.Hold any dogs paw in your hand even lightly. The dog will naturally bite toward your hand!
WTAF. If you watch It's Me or the Dog, with Victoria Stillwell that is not how an experienced trainer does it. Positive reinforcement means praise & rewards with treat or toy. And ignore behaviour that's not what you want. It NEVER,under any circumstance means negative, uncomfortable stuff for your dog. You've twisted a kind, effective training method. So upsetting.
Go away NUT CASE.....Notice this guy has interaction with his pet? Unlike fools like you who just feed them and lock them in the house for the majority of their life.
Forced fetch? Is that what i think it is? Making dogs feel uncomfortable & forcing them to fetch? Is this for hunting? Still, they shouldnt be forced to fetch & stop hunting already.
dogs are and always will be bred as tools. Doesnt make you love them any more than i do if your idea of love is getting them fat and letting them wither away in your yard.

Michael Wheelock how did the forced fetch go for you?
Wouldn't it be allot more pleasant for both parties to simply get a dog who enjoys fetching?...
Poor Luca, I don't think he liked that much LOL

Chances are your relationship wasn't good with your dog to begin with. That or you did something wrong.
Travis Malone, that is neither here nor there. Bottom line this method of teaching did not enhance the relationship between my dog and I
Shut the fuk up! the reason dogs are put down and killed are because of people like you! Stop killing dogs with your dumb training!

What is the point of sticking your hand in his mouth? I really don’t know. Just asking.
So many non-coercive ways to teach a reliable retrieve of any object you choose, not sure why this is necessary .......
it is incredibly important to get a clean delivery to hand. Especially important in hunting situations
why does luca come back to you after realising that you're going to be shoving your fingers in his mouth when he sits on that chair?
Because he is trained, lol.
A food motivated dog will still come back for the reward.
Because the glove in the mouth is not painful it’s annoying
why are you not marking his calmest with a "yes" immediately. Your dog, that understands marker training, why would you not mark that?
It seems like you could accomplish this faster if you removed the unpleasant stimuli of having the dog tolerate the glove in his mouth and just shaped the behavior by marking and rewarding for interest in the object -> mouth on object -> sustained mouth on object? That way you're not having to counter condition.
silverxslinky Maybe it is the start of the dog having a soft mouth and not chewing on what is in its mouth
