I don't care who builds them there will never be an aircraft to beat the DC-3 for being not just one of the hardest working, longest lasting aircraft ever built but also it's style is just beautiful, in a class all of it's own!
We had the Pratt & Whitney R-2000-7M2 engines on the C-7A Caribou, twin-row radial engines rated at 1650 SHP each. They have the Hamilton Standard Propellers: the YC-7A Prototype did not have reverse; the C-7A had a separate Integral Oil Control (IOC) behind the prop which enabled the propeller to be fully reversing - made the C-7A a great STOL airplane. The major headache was not with the engine but the exhaust pipes. There is only one stud per cylinder to support the entire exhaust system without any other supports. The front row of cylinders had a short stack from the front row to align with the exhaust pipes of the rear row cylinders. The welded brackets broke frequently on all of the exhaust stacks! It paid off to ensure the exhaust port liners were not worn out from vibration. The air pressure carburetor only has three mixture settings: off - auto rich - auto lean. There was an additional accelerator pump diaphragm on the right side of the rear accessory case. I spent seven years in the military working on the C-7A's in the late 70's and early 80's.
Thank you so much Michael for your service and for all the information, always loved the Caribou but I hardly ever saw them. They have or had one for years at the Chino Airport in California, I'm not sure it is still around. Unfortunately it was just sitting and rotting away, very sad.

Yes I love that radial engines sound too. Grew up in the 1950"s in Roanoke, Va and got my dad to take me to the airport every Sunday. Only 3 airlines. Piedmont had the most flights with DC3 craft with P&W 1830 engines. Eastern and American had several flights a day. Easter with Martin 404 and American with Convair 240 planes. @@EdWhisenantAviation Thankyou for the reply Ed. Yep, i think the R2000's are rated at somewhere around 1,400HP for T/O, in the C47, where the R1830's are about 1,150 - 1,200 HP. Have flown a few times in the std DC3 as pax, never as PIC. Amazing to think they are still flying today, 70 or 80 years on from their inception. Cheers, Mike.
The DC 3(C47) ......and the Super DC3 (R4D-8).....flew both of them with a freight company......By far, the most beloved airplanes I've ever flown! The Super 3 had cleveland brakes, and the regular 3, the old expansion type brakes........WE flight planned the TAS with 120 kts., the Super with 145kts.......quite a difference......fuel burn 100 gph, no blowers on either one.

Hello Ed. What were the performance gains by doing these conversions? I've flown DC-3's in years past and love the type. If a trusty Golden Retriever could be an airplane what would it be??? a DC-3/C-47.
WOW! That's pretty cool you used to fly this back in the days in & out of Waterbury-Oxford Airport, it's being taken care out here at Chino Airport in California. Thanks so much for your comment.
Wow, what do you know. This cool DC-3 was based only a couple of miles up Rt 8 from my hometown. Incredible plane! And of course, P & W was east outside of Hartford, and Windsor Locks is only a couple of miles NW of Hartford, and a lot of pilots got their intro to the P-47s and the F4Us they would do so well in with their R-2800s as well. Thank you for posting. As Donald Douglas said in 1981 just before he passed, they had no idea at the time they designed her in the mid 1930s, that she would outlive all of them. She gets the job done, and it's great they did a heart job on this one. My Dad was a Cbt Avn Egr in Iceland, and then in the ETO and helped build CAS fields for the 9th AF P-47s, and had C-47s drop in periodically. His greatest memory was helping to build the AF up top the hill from Omaha, and saw the C-47 skytrain that started. C-47 after C-47, he said. One of the scenes in the C-47 vid here on RUclips shows guys with helmets working to unload/load these gals once they touched down. My Dad said the Germans would periodically shell the Marston Mats, requiring them to replace them. They had to work all night to have their AF ready for an inspection the next a.m. by Gen officers.
My pleasure. And AFAIAC, with our Greatest Gen going to their Final Reward with The Almighty at the rate of 800 a day now (when Ambrose wrote his book, BoB, it was 1,000 a day. We are losing them quickly. All that will eventually survive is Oral History, from 2nd Generation, what Ambrose' Museum down in The Big Easy pushes so hard now, and more & more it must come from what little they shared with us. I firmly believed they were so reticent about speaking about their experiences b/c it was something they wanted to leave behind, and too many bad memories of friends lost to the brutality of war. Look at the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan. That shows and says it all.
Ive often thought about larger piston engines on a DC-3, but I was thinking something in the neighborhood of the P&W R2800, which is probably to much for the airframe. The R2000's from the DC-4 would probably go on without much modification. I wonder if the power to weight ratio is better than with the single row Wright 1820's.
I'm sorry, I would be the wrong person to give you that information, I was just a very lucky guy to have gotten a flight in this historic Aircraft. Thank you for watching & maybe someone will give some answers.
Hello Cat, the DC-3 Engine P&W R-1830 is 1200 HP & the P&W R-2000 is 1300 HP and the HP can go up if using a higher octane, ya you can feel the difference with the R-2000 engine, especially on taking off. Thank you for watching & for your comment 👍
Totally awesome video Ed....The DC-3 being one of my all time favourite Aircraft Interesting to learn about it having P&W R-2000 Engines...and it's Hiper conversion....I bet you enjoyed this flight ...i would have......Great stuff...Best wishes....Steve.-:)
Love the DC-3s but the C-47 with it's beefed up floor and double doors is the way to go. Can't beat the sound of the o'l school pistons but turboprops are it.
Yup I love them both and this one has the DC-3 Hiper Conversion, which removed the standard DC-3 P&W R-1830s engines to DC-4/C-54 P&W R-2000 Engines that included Modified Stainless Steel Cowlings and engine mounts from DC-4, also installed what they call is the “Crosswind Landing Gear” which is Heavyweight Landing Gear used by the Military on later versions of the C-47. After all of that a huge thank you for watching :)
There were some EC-47Q's that used R2000 engines. IIRC they listened in on North Vietnamese communication (ELINT) Intel gathering)....The US Army also used RU-8D's at some point.....
I was an aircraft mechanic in Vietnam 1969-1970 with the 362 TEWS (Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron). About 65 C-47's were converted to the EC-47 variant. Of those 17 were Q models powered by the PW R-2000 engine. I noticed that N62CC has a radome as all EC-47's had weather radar installed. I was wondering if N62CC might be of them. But I rather dought it as all EC-47's were transferred to the Vietnamese air force at the end of US involvement. When South Vietnam fell, the pilots crammed in as many family members as they could and escaped to Thailand or other countries. They all probably ended up as chicken coupes.
It's a fooking truck that flys. Thousands left over from WW2 still flying. Take off or land in any cow pasture. Astonishingly forgiving of novice pilots. Supremely rugged construction. Workhorse of the Berlin airlift. Most likely the best twin engine piston aircraft ever built.
Actually , that's not true. The DC-3 came first, it was only later pressed into military service. The first users of the DC-3 were American Airlines with their inaugural passenger service on June 26, 1936. The so-called C-47 is just a DC-3 with some extra bits and pieces like a cargo-door and towing eyes for gliders etc. It is in fact the other way around - "On of the very few commercial aircraft that made an easy crossover to military service"
HELLO AS A C/C ON A C-130 I WAS SURPRISED TO SEE THE AMOUNT OF OIL ON THE COWING AND THE AMOUNT IN THE CYLINDERS AT START-UP TIME FOR ENGINE MAINTENANCE?? TKS

Now that was a great video! Really cool to see and hear the smoking engine start-up, what a great experience that must have been to fly in this classic.

In the late 1960 and early 1970s I flew in them in Honduras and Nicaragua. Great aircraft.
WOW! Very nice, I bet you have some stories you could tell, thank you for your comment & for watching.
Thank you so much for sharing this!!! It's probably unique in the world having the same engines as the De Havilland Canada Caribou
Yes and thank you for watching :) and you very welcome I'm so glad that I was able to share my video.
Miss the " Bou" for sure
@@orion4565 Thank you for watching.
Just found this vid, WOW, what an amazing aircraft. Beautiful sound, and beautifully videoed from inside and out. Must have been a fantastic experience taking a ride on it. I guess it had a bit more ' boogie ' down the runway than the R1830 versions??
Yes it had a lot more takeoff power, it looks really nice now check it out

@@EdWhisenantAviation Thankyou for the reply Ed. Yep, i think the R2000's are rated at somewhere around 1,400HP for T/O, in the C47, where the R1830's are about 1,150 - 1,200 HP. Have flown a few times in the std DC3 as pax, never as PIC. Amazing to think they are still flying today, 70 or 80 years on from their inception. Cheers, Mike.
It even sounds alot more mean than a normal DC-3!
Ya, it sure does, thank you for checking it out 👍😎
There was a Pacific Southwest DC-3 at Chino near the Planes Of Fame museum but last I was it, It was in peaces.

Because it has the P&W R-2000 Engines, thank you for watching Thomas 👍😎
The DC 3(C47) ......and the Super DC3 (R4D-8).....flew both of them with a freight company......By far, the most beloved airplanes I've ever flown! Question: Did the DC4 require a type rating, if already typed in the -3? The Super 3 had cleveland brakes, and the regular 3, the old expansion type brakes........WE flight planned the TAS with 120 kts., the Super with 145kts.......quite a difference......fuel burn 100 gph, no blowers on either one.
That's pretty cool that you flew both of them, thank you for the info & for watching 👍

That sounds like an Air Festival that is worth going to, thank you for watching 👍
What a beauty.
Woow que tiempos aquellos... es grato escuchar esos motores.. gracias por el video

Nice video. Thanks for sharing it. Increasing the power from 1200hp to 1600-1700hp must give the old bird quite a boost in performance.

Q: Doesn't the longer twin row engine change the CG?
Or isn't that problematic?
I'm not 100% sure but I think very little, Great question 👍😎

Hello Ed. What were the performance gains by doing these conversions? I've flown DC-3's in years past and love the type. If a trusty Golden Retriever could be an airplane what would it be??? a DC-3/C-47.
This DC-3 is using the DC-4/C-54 P&W R-2000 Engines, you can really feel the difference on takeoff 😎👍
I was a lucky kid to fly in DC 3's from Boston to Barre Vt ... wish I could again

I flew this airplane when it was based at KOXC 20 years ago. However, back then it had gear doors!
WOW! That's pretty cool you used to fly this back in the days in & out of Waterbury-Oxford Airport, it's being taken care out here at Chino Airport in California. Thanks so much for your comment.
actually I believe I may have been wrong about the gear doors.
Thank you very much for watching and for all the information that you shared.Take care.
Yes the DC-4/C-54 P&W R-2000 Engines are on this DC-3. Thank you for watching :)

Am I correct.... the DC-3 engines are 1800 HP and the R-2000 engines 2000 HP? I did notice this craft jumped up in the air. Still learning.....

+Steve Lewis Video Channel. Thank you so much Steve, you and I both love the DC-3, yes it was in incredible flight. Take care.
Most still flying are c47's even if they been converted still a c47
Does anyone knows if its possible to engine swap a double wasp in a C-47/DC-3?
This DC-3 has the DC-4/C-54 P&W R-2000 Engines
Do the props on the R-2000's always come with thrust reversal function?
no nkp thailand ec47 no reversal function AND R1830 and R2000 had different props
There were some EC-47Q's that used R2000 engines. IIRC they listened in on North Vietnamese communication (ELINT) Intel gathering)....The US Army also used RU-8D's at some point.....
Thank you for the info on the EC-47Q's & the RU-8D's it's always good to here about other models 👍

Yes this aircraft has proven itself over & over they will not die they remind me of the UH-1 Huey's, C-130's all GREAT Aircraft 😎👍
On of the very few military planes that made an easy crossover to commercial service...
Yes that is so true, thank you for your comment & for watching 👍
Actually , that's not true. The DC-3 came first, it was only later pressed into military service. The first users of the DC-3 were American Airlines with their inaugural passenger service on June 26, 1936. The so-called C-47 is just a DC-3 with some extra bits and pieces like a cargo-door and towing eyes for gliders etc. It is in fact the other way around - "On of the very few commercial aircraft that made an easy crossover to military service"
Great video! :-)
