Just came across this adorable reaction video of you hearing Jeannie C. Riley singing her breakout hit, "Harper Valley PTA" for the first time. She recorded it in 1968.... 54 years ago. It was written by Tom T. Hall about a real life experience.
I grew up listening to this song and singing it onstage (and off) for as long as I remember. It's so sassy and full of attitude! Love it! Great story too! Sure put those nosy busy-bodies in their places! :)
As Jeannie C. is a friend of mine, I've just shared this video with her so she can watch your reaction for herself. :)

STAN, My favorite Reactor: Jeannie C Riley's records was a staple on country & western stations all throughout the country. There's a saloon around my neighborhood that still has this 45rpm record on their jukebox. Country female singers of every name, like Dolly Parton, Kitty Wells, and particularly Loretta Lynn, whose chart-topper was called "The Pill", became world-wide sensations.

Jeannie C. Riley is best known for her 1968 country & pop hit "Harper Valley PTA". But she had some other songs such as "The Girl Most Likely", "There Never Was A Time," "The Rib," "The Back Side of Dallas," "Country Girl," "Oh Singer," & "Good Enough To Be Your Wife". Later she became a born-again Christian and began recording gospel music during the late 1970's.

All those songs you mentioned is on her Greatest Hits album, which I've had for ages. I grew up singing along to most of those songs, with "There Never Was a Time" and "Country Girl" being my other favorites. Down home, straight-ahead classic country. They don't make good country music like that anymore.

This song was very popular in the black community. The soul music radio played this sing regularly.

Ms. Riley completely inhabited this song. You could easily envision her as the mother she is singing about. Great reaction.

Her first album (one with her & daughter with note in her hand) she has several songs that goes into a lot more about Mrs Taylor, Mr Harper (which has a steel guitar player that makes the guitar answer her as Mr Harper.that is so cool) & Shirley Thompson. The other songs weren't released as singles but they're really good.

There was a TV sit com of the same same that was based on this song. I think it starred Barbara Eden.

Yes, you're correct. Barbara Eden pulled off that role perfectly, with attitude and sass! :)

I highly recommend checking out the podcast “Cocaine and Rhinestones” by Tyler Mahan Coe. He devotes three in-depth episodes to this song. He is very knowledgeable about the backstories of country music and he does his homework.

You should check out her Greatest Hits album for other hits. Harper Valley PTA was her breakout song and a blockbuster hit, but it wasn't her only hit.
