Isn't it amazing how different songs, and memories they invoke, make up the soundtrack of our lives...
Jeannie C. Riley is best known for her 1968 country & pop hit "Harper Valley PTA". But she had some other songs such as "The Girl Most Likely", "There Never Was A Time," "The Rib," "The Back Side of Dallas," "Country Girl," "Oh Singer," & "Good Enough To Be Your Wife". Later she became a born-again Christian and began recording gospel music during the late 1970's.
Love this song. It was a hit when I was a kid and the PTA and teachers were preaching, as she says, "hypocritical" morality. As a left handed kid, due to research, I was under suspicion of being ""artistic" (gay) and my parents fought the cure of forced right handedness. My mom said "then he will be artistic" - surprisingly, one my right handed brothers was also gay. A right handed homosexual, who would've thought that could happen?
This is a song written by Tom T. Hall and it is based on an actual incident from his childhood.
Classic, from when songs told more than just love stories or lack thereof.
This song was a HUGE croosover hit,,,,was a top 10 hit even on the Pop chart. I has also so many markers of the year it came out which was 1969 I believe....Sock it to the PTA board was a reference to the phase the old TV Show Laugh-In created, and of course the mini-skirt reference, that was the height of the mini-skirt fad !!! Great reaction Nick
The song was a #1 HIT NOT just in top 10 ! It came out in 68 NOT 69 !
Peyton Place refers to the popular show that featured scandals.
"Ice" reference is when ice was delivered to homes before AC amd reliable refrigeration. In shot, she's banging the ice man! I used to think she said "eyes."
Gotta love the 70’s!
There’s a video from a movie starring Barbara Eden that acts out the song. One of my childhood favorite although now that I know what Peyton Place was, it helps my understanding a bit.
There is a follow up song to this one called return to Harper valley . It picks up many years down the road
Normally I will switch to another reactor if the person realizes they know the song...but I didn't with you! I am so sorry that you lost your grandmother...your love for her was obvious...I still miss mine. But your smiles were what kept me watching and they made me smile...thank you so much for that!
Supposedly based on a real incident that happened in a little place in South Carolina in the late 1950’s or early 1960’s
I still hear this on one country station, at least once a day. Peace out, Saucey!
I love the sass
Love this song. Check out the video for this from the movie if the same name starring Barbra Eden
You get a chance, now you gotta see the movie made about this song
Oh geez does this bring me back to my childhood!
Haven't heard this in so very long. Check out the made-for-tv movie, Harper Valley P.T.A. starring Barbra Eden.
Unfortunately, hypocrisy is still alive and well.
This song would have never happened if Mrs. Johnson had said yes to Bobby Taylor. Realize that the country is ruled by the equivalent of the Harper Valley PTA.
Well that was certainly a blast from the past. Not my fav blast but was fun to hear it again
Jeannie C. Riley ~ Interview/"Return To Harper Valley" is the second chapter of harper valley pta, part one is based on truth check this out
Mrs. Taylor seems to use a lot of ice whenever he's (Bobby) away = she's drinkin' a LOT with someone else
Your secretary "left town" LITERALLY, because he got her pregnant and wouldn't abort
This is just a little Payton Place = a mid-late 60's soap opera where EVERYBODY knew EVERYTHING about EVERYONE, aka DRAMA CITY!
This song was about the tiny towns that dot the southern states and how the local councils (like the Parent-Teacher Association, who was SUPPOSED to improve relations between the school system and parents) abused their power to press their personal points of view (usually stating "religious" reasons for their condemnations). This is VERY much something that EASILY happened is a lot of towns.
(PEYTON) PLACE!
I wish you just listen to her and enjoy and stop talking
BURN.🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
There was a made for tv movie with the story starring Barbara Eden😍
way too many interruptions. No thanks.
