Slash style licks lesson for beginners/intermediates (from a non professional guitar player🤷🏻♂️)

- ATTENTION: for those with short attention spans and those with low tolerance for any kind of frustration, you can skip ahead to 3 mins 27 seconds and avoid my introduction and overview. But if you feel inclined to complain about there being too much talking I’d suggest moving on to another page.
I had a few people ask me to make tutorials on slash style. I am no gsharp, laszlo, or Jakob-slash by any means. I’m a “advanced intermediate” perhaps who has spent the last couple of years trying to learn the slash style. I just hope this can help some people who need a bit more of a basic and repetitive demonstration of some of these techniques. Just doing this for fun.

Thanks man! I appreciate the feedback and encouraging words. Yea maybe I’m being a bit too negative there, but I think what I probably should have said is that I’m not sure I’ll reach those levels given the limitations of my time. If I wound have stuck with playing this regularly as a kid I have little doubt I’d be at that level, but picking this up again as a man in his 40s with kids and a busy career it’s sometimes challenging to practice as much as I’d ideally like to. @@michaelbaker9606 thanks man, that means a lot! I feel the same way. That feeling is actually what lead me to make the lesson videos. I have been watching so much content (from better players mind you) to try and learn the slash style but often come away feeling frustrated at the level of explanation. I have other lesson videos too if you like this one. I think I have done 9 at this point. I do try and focus on different aspects of the style in each one but there is definitely overlap.

DISCLAIMER: I have been overwhelmingly getting positive feedback about this lesson (which is awesome and very much appreciated) but I have had 3 or 4 guys, who apparently have zero tact, complain that I’m talking too much at the beginning. I could rant about how annoying that is to me but it’s a waste of time. I did this for fun, for free, with no planning. I do talk a lot for the first 3 minutes, so if you want to skip that it’s very easy to do. If that is not something that you can handle then perhaps keep browsing the thousands of free guitar videos and find one that works for your attention span and brain.

This is THE rolling lick that I've been struggling with forever. So, never mind the haters and ones that are compelled to complain about anything and just know you're helping people with this. @@LeroyLuce thanks so much for this kind feedback back man, I’m really stoked that this seems to be helping some folks. I struggled with figuring some of this stuff out too and watched all the mentioned guys in slow motion tons of times, at times with some level of frustration. I was so impressed by how Brett Papa taught some similar licks I felt compelled to try and pass it on in my own non pro level way. But yea, that rolling legato vibe is such an essential slash sound and Gsharp and those guys do it so well. It definitely feels good when you start getting a feel for it. I’m still learning myself, still on the journey. I posted another little lesson a few days ago as well. I think I might do another one where I put today an entire slash style phrase that covers a few different positions and incorporates some classic slash type licks. Then break each section down. @@slashtriono not here and there. If you’re going to do this, you need to come to grips with these people being everywhere. Seriously. You’re going to get that stuff every video. Lot of miserable people in the world, and most are on RUclips and the comment section is the closest they have to a social life and they hate themselves for it. You just need to not expect niceness. Just don’t worry about it.

Thanks for the kind words. I too have looked for this type of thing for myself, where someone takes some time and breaks things down piece by piece and repeats and various tempos. So I had that in mind when I did this and is what I personally like to see. I would love to see Jakob or Laszlo break down some even more complex licks and patterns in this kind of detail. Brett Papa actually does a great job with his lessons. I purchased his course on mixing major and minor pentatonic scales and it’s probably the best guitar course I have ever used. He’s very systematic and seems like a nice guy to boot. Thanks again !

Yea, I guess it makes sense. They are looking at it more like a business and teasing us a bit to get us to buy lessons, which is reasonable. I don’t think Jakob does live lessons but does sell pre recorded lessons. I have bough many of them. They are helpful but I think he goes a bit fast and adds too much variation too quickly. He did make a custom video for me that was a bit more focused. He’s a great player. Laszlo only does Skype type lessons but I don’t think he’s all that available. But I have observed that being a great player does not always equal a great teacher. Brett Papa is a fantastic teacher. I’m just doing it for fun. Cheers !

Hey, thanks for the comment and I’m glad that you’re finding it useful. I’m getting a pretty good response from people so I’ll likely do some more videos in the future. While I’m a pretty good player in some respects, my experience with teaching others how to play and how to describe it is not something I have much experience with. I tend to overthink everything anyway, so at some point I’ll just post some other licks, phrase, or techniques that can help people get that slash style vibe.

Thanks my friend! It’s surprisingly challenging to do a lesson type thing. I have never been one to read tabs or to even keep up with the fret numbers. But I tried to do the type of thing that I personally like to see - someone breaking down the licks slowly and doing the same lick several times.
This is an incredible lesson, you’ve given us hours of practice, or in my case weeks!

I was kind of approaching this like you were taking a lesson ya know, like 30 mins with teacher who is going to explain some stuff but also just show you the tricks/licks up close over and over. I learn the fastest that way personally and I'm sure many are the same. I actually did another video last night but was already feeling some kind of pressure to not talk too much ha! Those dudes got in my head! It's hard to be super precise because I am not a teacher and do not know all the technical stuff. I'm sure with time i'll got more efficient, but this is just a hobby, I won't be quitting my day job anytime soon ha. Thanks gain!

Awesome lesson man. Nice work, keep Slash’in on! What I find also really helps to make it sink in, is dial up a Blues Jam track in the key of interest and play those type of licks along with it. It really helps to develop the phrasing.
For sure man, I do that most nights. I usually rotate between jamming to traditional blues at various tempos and various other "rock" or "slash style" backing tracks. It's definitely one of my main practice routines. I did this for kicks. I had a few people ask me, and I am thinking why would these people ask me when there are masters like Gsharp, Laszlo, Jakob and the like. I figured maybe those guys are a bit too advanced for some so I thought maybe i could do some more basic stuff for those trying to get some of these licks and patters down. My first video ever talking!! I wish Brett Papa could do an advanced slash style course. He's such a great teacher. Cheers
So my first venture into posting a RUclips video that involves talking and teaching and I already had one guy say “gave up after 3 minutes! If you’re gonna give lessons get to the point” ha. I just deleted because I have no time for that kind of thing. I clearly say I’m no professional and obviously just a regular guy making a phone video in his home and the guy was angry I talked too much!! Maybe I did talk too much but I’m thinking man, no one is forcing you to watch this. There is no shortage of short clip high quality guitar videos out there. Gotta love how the internet and anonymous communication really brings out the best in people 😉
These exercises are fuckin’ GREAT. I’ve saved this and I’m gonna memorise these. And I’ve been playing 27 years. Lessons like this would have cost a fortune when I was a kid. Be thankful people.
Dude, thanks so much for the positive feedback and enthusiasm!!! I’m with ya, I’m in my 40s and originally started playing as a young teen and back then I either learned by ear (rewinding a tape or CD over and over) or from some VHS tape that cost 50 bucks in 1989 that wasn’t even that good. The amount of content (for free) on RUclips is amazing.

@@stevehulme1640 hey, it’s never too late to learn, and seems like you’re off and running. But like many skills, it does seem like starting young is helpful. I’m 49 and initially got into playing around 12 and played a lot until 16 or 17 and then kind of lost interest for long stretches of time and only got back into electric again over the last few years. Definitely the longest I’ve stuck with it. I think my life is more stable and predictable at this age which has allowed me to remain focused. It’s a lot of fun for sure.
The slash November is a great guitar! I actually sold mine a month ago to help finance / justify a custom shop LP. It’s a sickness.
Lots of great content out there for learning. I’d highly recommend Brett Papa, he has tons of fee stuff on here and has some pod stuff that is well worth it. His teaching style is excellent.

Hello my guitar brotha since G sharp i didnt saw such a good lesson about playing Slash style that we all so much love,and i watch them all,niko,lazlo you name it but this one is by far the best lesson i have seen !this lesson allows everyone to start to go on this path while the most around its just show off so we can buy their lesson wich i tot respect its their channel they can do whatever they want.
This lesson is a real helper for us all Slash afficionados it is like you said in the end of the video.
Ill be always greatfull for this video that unlocked my brain on how to play Slash like you gave us the base so we can start to go on the right path.

I know from my work experience and hours of practice that decoding some of this stuff can be tricky. There are tons of excellent player on RUclips that we all benefit from. I’m a huge fan of Brett Papa and highly recommend both his free and paid stuff, particularly his paid course on mixing major and minor pentatonic. But yea, not tons of stuff out there of people breaking down slash style licks in the way the Brett Papa breaks down his stuff. Sometimes we just need to see someone up close repeat these things over and over and various speeds in order for our brains to process it.

@@lets_rock_it papa Stache ha “welcome welcome welcome”. That dude is a RUclips treasure. Seems like a super cool dude that l’d like to have a beer with and hang out and he’s a monster player. While he doesn’t play exactly like slash there is a lot of overlap and I have learned things from Brett that have directly translated into the slash style. Some of my go to runs are definitely ones I have picked up from him. I haven’t learned the cage system yet but I know I should. I need to practice rhythm more as well. I think I have naturally pretty good timing but I need to practice more. For the last two years I pretty much just play licks to backing tracks or play along to GnR songs where slash track has been removed. I just practice lead non stop. Always good to be more well rounded but I’m not a professional musician and have lots going on in life so I have to use my music time wisely. Thanks again 🎸

1 thing i have learn with steve stine dont be judging your playing level i did that also and i felt i was never good enough.what matters is we having fun with what we playing and once i got rid of that it was much better for me even when playing with others and how many guitar players have a insane technical level but dont make us feel anything.while other players with lot less skills makes us goosebumps,make us smile i call it they hit our soul.
At the end of the day we all getting better as long we keep playing and we dont have to be that skillfull to hit ppls emtions off course it helps but theres a lot guys ovethere with insane skills that their music just dont hit me.
Keep that in mind it did help me i was too demanding with myself and it didnt bring much positivity for me.Now i just want to have fun as long i dont murderer a song iam good with 😄

One thing about Slash that many people never mention is his right/picking hand. Every so often ( you have to really listen , and also know your instrument/amp : i.e. spending a lot of hours simply playing and adjusting the tones on guitar with volume and tone knobs as well as amp settings etc.) IS THAT Slash with pick very lightly or strum very lightly over the bridge pickup- a lot of times a double stop riff - by he holds the pick lightly with a very light pass over the strings - it does make distinctive sound/tone that picking hard does not sound like it
Cool man, thanks for sharing this cool and interesting observation. Yea, so much nuance in everyone’s playing. Jakob slash (if you’re familiar) told me that he personally has a very strong pick attack and uses a thicker pick which results in that kind of characteristic slash chimey sound, particularly on the high e, b, and g strings, on lead parts. I actually use a medium pick and lean more towards picking a bit lighter. But, despite being a big slash fan my personal goal is not to sound exactly like him. I’d rather be some combo of slash SRV, and Clapton ha. I like slash’s 80s and 90s phrasing and just that dirty major / minor pentatonic vibe with his rolling legato, but I prefer the vibrato and feel of the others guys.
You should post a video of what you’re talking about. I wish more people would post vids like I did because I’m still very much learning myself. Cheers my friend 🎸👍🏼

Man ok.look i had to subscribe. I have not long ago entered the intermediate stage according to everything ive learned on RUclips. And from family n friends. I think its awesome you started teaching/showing some of what hou learned and how you learned it. Most pro/experts if you want to call them that. Goes way over most everyone's head with way to much theory and terms that the bedroom garage guitarists wont get. For many of us out here n i know i speak for many we are not expecting slash or even Tyler larson to be worried about us when we pick up our guitar. We just want to have fun enjoy and play. And that's what it's all about. I really hope you keep it going. We can learn more from someone like you than we could from Carlos Santana.
Dude, I’m honored to get such a kind and appreciative comment like yours. I’m really glad that you find it helpful! I totally understand what you mean about things going over one’s head at times. There is tons a great free and paid content out there, but sometimes it’s difficult to find the specific thing or approach that works for each person. I have found Brett Papa to be extremely useful for my particular needs and skill level, definitely recommend you check him out if you haven’t already. But yea man, I kind of approached this as if I was actually trying to give a friend a lesson. So I do talk maybe too much for some and it’s obviously not scripted, but I think many can appreciate this approach. I have only had a handful of rude guys whine and complain that I talk too much. When I was a kid in the 80s all I could do was rewind the tape over and over and use my ear or hope to see slash’s hand for a moment on some grainy live VHS performance. But I digress. @@slashtrio that's right man. I'm 55 yo born in 69. I grew up in a musically inclined family so to speak. I played drums since I was 12 lived it eat it breathed it. A couple years ago i just really started paying close attention to Gary Rossington of Lynyrd Skynyrd and Leslie West playing Mississippi Queen. My journey with the LP started and I fell in love with LP Jr's and off I went kind of with the same passion and love I had with drums as a young fellow. I know I will never be anything of significance I just want to learn as much as I can in what time I have and get as good as I can and have fun doing it.
@@chucklee347 coo man, my bother is the same age as you, I’m 49. I started guitar at age 12 but I didn’t always stick with over the years. Went decades without playing or learning lead guitar. But as with many skills like this, getting the foundations at an early age often helps. Many things I have learned to do over the years I take for granted, the more subtle stuff (micro bends between notes, picking dynamics, string rakes, all these details can really made one’s playing sound much better and more like pro, even when playing easy phrases). I may try and do a lesson on that type of thing, getting the feel that gives your playing feel and attitude. But yea man, the players you mentioned are awesome. I definitely appreciate southern rock and classic rock way more now then back in the day. As a kid I was into punk rock so it was a lot of power chords. But went through big GnR phase in HS and tried to learn slash’s stuff. Was very hard back then because I didn’t know anyone who could play like that and there weren’t many recourses back then. I also like SRV. RUclips has helped me tremendously. I love LPs too man, I have a couple too many 🤷🏻♂️. But you’re right man, it’s all about having fun. I have kids and work all the time, so this is my passion and time to zone out and lose myself in something. Thanks again

Of course I would love to have Gary rossington's slow laid back technique while having Paul Gilbert's blazing speed if needed. But would that sound like me. Not to offend but you sound pretty young (relative to me that is). I’m 48 and playing since I was 18. Im just guessing from the way you are talking about your own playing (not based on your apparent skill level) that you haven’t been playing all that long. If im right, I can say I wish I had your skill level when I was your age 👍
@@lockeshill hey no offense taken. I guess I must have a youthful voice because I’m 49🎅🏼. I initially started playing at age 13 (my dad plays guitar) and I played a lot from 13 to 17 (was in punk bands and dabbled with GnR but I couldn’t figure most of lead parts out). I stopped playing completely and then got into again in college for a couple of years and got really into blues and SRV. Then I went to grad school and totally stopped again. Fast forward to 2004 I got into acoustic and signing (punk - ish kind of stuff) and did that for a few years. Didn’t start doing this electric lead thing again until 2019 or so. So in a manner I have been playing a long time but with long breaks. But I suppose that learning the foundations at a young age has helped a lot.
As far as how I speak of my own level, I’m just not one to boast or to assume too much, I think I’m pretty good but there are tons of people on YT who run circles around me, and guys like laszlo, gsharp, and Jakob definitely play the slash thing at a higher level than me. Thanks again 🎸👍🏼
This is excellent mate. If anyone is struggling, who's a hammer on and pull off with 1,2 1,3 and 1,4 type, put together an exercise for yourself to loosen up 2,3 and get the trill speed going there. I doubt you'll regret it. Mine were tight, and I'm now making good progress with this, after slackening them off by practicing fast phrases (slowly to start with then gradually quickening) over and over, that I'd normally use 1,2 for. If it makes the back of your hand ache behind your pinky and ring finger it means it's working. Don't push it two hard. Take your time. Break and go back to it , later. Trigger finger below the base of your ring finger is not great.
Awesome man, thanks for the tips!! I have been trying to do more exercises as well, definitely helps. I probably seem a bit tighter here than when I’m free playing, I tend to get more tight when I’m recording myself. It’s amazing how much the little red record button can get into your head 👀
Cheers, Dude. Yeh, the flashing red light. I record acoustic guitar tracks for my friend to put vocals over. It normally takes me more than one attempt, as soon as I hit record. I've known her for thirty years and no one else will ever hear them, but it still makes me nervous ☺
@@pistoltips5270 I get it for sure. I often record myself (just audio) jamming to tracks and I’m often very pleased with it. But when I try and do a RUclips video I often get tight and have to do a few takes. I think I do better when improv then covering some exact solo.

I love mixing major and minor but not sure I could teach it in a very efficient/effective manner because I do not know all the scales. I know some of the basic major shapes but mostly I do it by identifying the major notes that are within the minor position and then target them if that makes sense? I might be able to at least show what I know at some point. In the meantime I would highly recommend any of Brett Papa's videos on mixing major and minor. I actually bought his course on that and it's very good. But even without buying the course you can get a lot from his free stuff. I'll add the link below:

So much value in this! But Minute 13 man slow down! 😊 That’s where I get lost with g sharp. all smooth and slowly on the first and second string and boom everyone speeds up on the 3rd and 4th string and I get lost. 😢😅
Ha, I appreciate the feedback and I in fact feel your pain my friend! I still watch gsharp videos and even have paid lesson videos I got from Jakob slash, and both of them often just fly over lots of stuff and I’m left watching some tiny section over and over in slow motion trying to dissect the technique! It can be a frustrating feeling because I know I could likely play the licks or learn them quickly but I’m just having a hard time seeing what’s happening. That being said I love those guys and I wish G was still alive, dude was the best. I would still recommend Jakob’s vids (they are priced very reasonably and he won’t rip you off) but just be prepared to get a little overwhelmed with some of it.
But your point is definitely well taken man. That’s why I did these videos to begin with, to try and slow things down so some of us mere mortals could progress. I’m new to teaching so sometimes it’s tricky to record in real time (it’s all one take no edits) and to cover everything and to keep it organized and digest-able. I plan on doing another video sometime soon that goes over these legato patterns down more. Thanks again man 👍🏼🎸🤘🏼

Hey, thanks for noticing. I snagged this LP from Chicago Music exchange over the summer. It’s “dirty lemon burst”. It’s only a AA top but I really like it less flamy. It’s more “curly flame” and it’s all over the top. Actually looks more like the derrig guitar than the slash models that often look to orange to me or have AAAAA tops that are a bit much. But yea it’s a good one 🎸👍🏼

@@YehoashDream yea, I really liked those pick ups but I ended up switching them out for the SD slash 2.0s. Definitely higher output and a fatter sound. Yea I know you’re a big LP guys and I have seen you with many over the years. I do like more flamy tops as well but I wanted one that was more subtle. My other favorite is my wildwood 50s unburst, it has a beautiful flame top. These are both just standards (not custom shops) but they are really good ones, they play and sound very nice.

@@YehoashDream yea man, wildwood is awesome. They say they “hand pick” their tops. I wanted to find just the unburst I wanted with the right top. Wanted it pretty flamy but more of a wide / wavy flame as opposed to that chevron vibe. So it’s just a “wildwood select standard’ so they changed a few hundred more fro that (as compared to typical standard) but it came with 50s spec (which all the other unbursts were 60s spec at that time), the better top, and they special pickups. I did change out the bridge pup but left the neck, it’s super clear and articulate. Interestingly I seem to play my November burst the least. I think maybe I just need to have it set up again, the action is actually too low for me. I need it slightly higher to be able to grab the stings.

Hi there, thanks for the positive feedback! The how long have I been playing question is a little tricky because I originally started quite young (age 12 or 13 - in my 40s now) and I played pretty consistently until around 17 or so then I stopped for a while. Then played again for a year or two in college (got into blues more) then stopped again. Didn’t really play at all until I was in my 30s and that was more acoustic punk-ish kind of stuff with vocals. Got back into lead guitar in 2019 or so. This has definitely been the longest I have stuck with it. Definitely still hooked. Thanks again 🎸👍🏼🤘🏼

Looks like B dorian/minor pentatonic. Which would be played in the key of A major. The reason to understand the underlying music theory is to be able to improvise in this style in any key, anywhere on the fretboard. Thanks for the video.
Hey thanks. Yea I didn’t mean to suggest knowledge of music theory is not not preferable, I was just acknowledging that my own understanding of theory is fairly limited at this point. I started playing as a kid and learned mostly by ear and learned to improvise the way that many who ply the blues do, learning a few of the main “boxes” or scale shapes and then just running with it. I certainly was adding the blues scales, chromatic runs, and Dorian notes without completely understanding the theory, just tying to emulate my hero’s.
But your point is will taken and i practice all the time and watch excellent instruction videos that teach more about what you are talking to. I kind of just did this video on a whim and my main goal was just to show some basic techniques that slash uses to get that sound. I’m assuming that most people who are on this journey are also watching more professional videos from people who can more confidently teach all the theory and such. Thanks again for the comment. 🎸👍🏼

Hey man, thanks for the comment and glad the video has been helpful in some way for you. I think it’s a preference and whatever you’re accustomed to. I traditionally used my pinkie very little and have had to make some effort to strengthen it and use it more often when it’s needed or especially advantageous. I think many shredder type players always use their pinkies a lot, whereas a lot of the old blues players (SRV, Clapton and others) do not use their pinkies that much. Even slash seems to use his pinkie less than you might imagine. But yea, I would assume that either was is fine if it works for you. For most of the rolling legato stuff (like in this video) I mostly just use the first 3 fingers. I tend to use the pinkie for stretching out to get further down the feet board. Hope that helps. I think Gsharp, laszlo, Jakob and all those guys use their pinkies a decent amount but probably not as much as shredder type players. I think it depends on the particular lick or phrase too. When doing big ascending runs (like nighttrain outro solo) I think you’ll see guys use the pinkie more. Would be interesting to go and watch gsharp and see how often he uses the pinkie. I still watch his stuff and will try to identify a specific lick or phrase I like and then watch it over and over at slower speed. It’s too bad that guy passed away, I know he did Skype lessons and custom recorded vids. But yea, I’m trying to fill that void to help beginner and intermediates get some of the slash style and blues licks I have figured out. Yeah, sad he passed. I think helping guys transition to other positions is a great idea. With these scales, all we do is learn to go up and down. Finally breaking that and moving lateral really change my playing. More fun too
Forgot to tell you. The way you did your video was so refreshing. Repeating and repeating and being so paitent is a big help. That way a guy doesn't have to keep playing with his remote, doing that awful slow speed thing that sounds so terrible....lol. Good luck with your videos. I kind of like your talkative relaxed approach. You set the scene up really nicely, rather than the here's the lick played really quickly, now work it out for yourself, kind of thing. That's cool, too, if you can read guitar in the mirror, so to speak. Not everyone can. You have a good thing here. Nobody needs to be rude.
Thanks! Yea everyone learns differently so you can’t really please everyone. I’m sure if I was doing this all the time I might be more succinct in some parts and obviously more prepared, but like I said in the video, I’m not a pro and just doing it on the fly. Some people will be jerks regardless.

Hey thanks for the comment and I’m glad you have been able to get something from the video. Unfortunately I don’t do tabs, I have never been one to use them. I tend to either figure things out by ear or by watching tons of tutorials and then kind of doing my own thing with what I’m able to absorb. Which part are you stuck on? I haven’t watched the video since I made it so I have lost track of some details. And iv havnt gotten to the next videos yet iv been really trying to study this one, but after you do the hammer ons on the b string then you do some other back n forth movement and end up on the D string, its kind of hard to explain in typing, but you go to the g D and A string then end on the D string with some vibrato
@@hunit200 hey man, now worries. I’m glad to help when possible. Yea, it’s difficult to explain these things in writing. I think I know what you’re referring to. It’s as you descend down the scale while doing some “slashisms” I guess. I tried to go back and see what exactly you might be referring to. You might try my part 3. For that lesson I construct a specific lick pattern that goes up and down the scale and I think I might break down those g d and a licks a bit more clearly. Between part 3 and part 4 I go over those bluesy legato type runs a lot. Part 4 is bit more about doing major and minor. I hope that helps. It’s difficult me to explain too much with through typing as well. I know it can be frustrating, but be patient and keep at it. I do this with gsharp videos and almost lose my mind because he goes really fast, adds variation too quickly, and sometimes the cam angle isn’t great. I watch in slower speed and hope to absorb something! Would be great to do these live in real time!

@@hunit200 hey man, I appreciate the kind words and I am really glad you’re finding it helpful! I had really never considered doing lesson type videos for a variety of reasons, but I had 3 or 4 people ask me if could either make a lesson video or do zoom type lessons so I decided to give it a try. I tried to just make the kind of video lessons that I prefer, that is someone taking their time, doing lots of repetition, and so close cam angles. I realize that I left out all the picking hand info! That was kind of an omission on my part because the picking part comes to me quickly and intuitively 98 % of the time. I have since realized others aren’t like that ha. But also I’m doing this with an iPhone and no editing so I feel like the left hard is what most people need to see most. But yea man, I’m sure if you have the patience to get through some of my longer vids (I don’t always talk as much as the fist one ha) I’m sure you’ll pick up some licks you can incorporate into your own playing.
But keep at it, while I was already a pretty decent blues guitarist, up until the last couple of years and didn’t know many of these slash type licks, so it’s something I have been absorbing a lot.
Sorry for the long reply! But yea man, feel free to reach out whenever. I enjoy chatting with other guitarists. I don’t play out or even with other people so it’s cool to connect. Hey man, it’s mostly just B minor pentatonic with the blues scale / flat 5 and another note or two added in. But the general framework is pretty much b minor pentatonic. Joel that helps. Sorry I’m not super knowledgeable about scales, still learning myself 🎸👍🏼

I'm sorry if my title was not accurate, I guess I hesitate to call my playing advanced because I reserve that for all the guys I watch (gsharp, laszlo, jakobslash). I suppose it's probably more intermediate than beginner. Maybe I was thinking it was more a beginner/introduction in terms of trying to learn some of Slash's techniques (legato, hammer ons/pull offs, which are really not beginner techniques by definition I suppose). I tried to go slow and repeat a lot. I did that simply because that is how I prefer to learn. I have leaned tons from gsharp videos but he goes very fast and tends to do lots of variations, so I have to watch little sections in slow motions over and over. Anyway, this was my first ever "lesson". I might try another one sometime and do even more basic stuff like bends, vibrato, double stops, and more basic blues licks. Cheers!

I started to respond but i’m going to ignore that kind of negativity. I mean it’s hard to please everyone and I am just doing this for fun. There is tons of great instruction on RUclips but much of the slash stuff goes by pretty quick. I’m in my 40s and would have killed to have seen people break stuff down like this when I was a teenager. Hey thanks, I’ll try to keep that in mind. My instinct is to talk more than I did here, but it also puts a bit of pressure on me as well because I’m not a professionally trained musician and am really not one to pay attention to fret numbers and and such. So trying to call out the fret numbers and which string I’m playing is more ideal I guess but it’s also a bit more challenging for me. I’m sure I’ll get better at that with practice. But, if you watch the newer lesson I think you’ll find that i am repeating the same patterns many times, so maybe just try and get one section at a time. That’s what I do when I watch stuff.
