Good presentation sir.
Great information on this channel. This guy is obviously the real deal. Much more sensible than the guys that recommend carrying a 100 pound pack full of crap everywhere that most people would be discarding because of weight after about 100 yards. At home, I like having as much as possible, but out, and especially on foot, you need what you *NEED.*
I also carry a mega size frensel lens. Book size. Bought at the dollar tree for $1 in the school section. You can practically light a log on its own. A dry one of course.
I really enjoy your videos. Good, solid information presented without all the ego I've come to expect from "survival experts" on RUclips. Keep up the good work!
Texas Survivalist Network I appreciate that. You will never hear me call myself an expert at anything, I cringe when I hear the word. I specialize in survival and preparedness for the eastern woodlands and mountains, that’s as far as I am comfortable describing it.
im glad you made the point of open flame as the choice for emergency/survival situations. i always have a small fire kit on my belt(no solar but, since im in urban locale, in an emergency, somebody's side view mirror might accidentally fall off an unattended vehicle). thanks for sharing.
agreed on all counts, brother. I keep at least a minimum, but diverse kit in my pocket, bag, truck, house and at my camp at all times. Both of my kids' packs and my wife's packs all have their own as well.
Very informative. I would have never thought of the bees wax birthday candles. Wonder if a Altoids breath mints tin would work? I loved the dog playing and checking on you while you talked. I raised Dobermans for many years. I love Dobermans, but after losing my boy after 15 wonderful years, I do not believe any other Doberman could rise to his level of love, dedication and courage. We now have our first GSD and he is now about 8 years old....he is very cool, but his horrible shedding drives me crazy and he's too large to fit in our Corvette. Our next dog will likely be a Belgian Malinois..... strong, intelligent, courageous and the right size to fit in our Corvette Z06. I live by these words, "to love me, first you must love my dog."
One thing I use as a last ditch fire starter is the top couple inches of a road flare cut off with the cut end dipped in wax. Ignition and tinder in one.
I really dig the videos you put out. Usually can find at least one good idea that I haven't thought of previously. The beeswax b day candles is a good idea. Also having to explain the idea and meaning of "everyday" makes me laugh. That's the world we live in, people need everything spelled out.
"Finding and harvesting fatwood.." So, I found and harvested (for about $10) a big ass box of it at walmart. Filled up a gallon ziplock tight, so enough to last a long time. Also make my own tinders from cotton balls and bacon grease (doubles as chapstick). Between that and a fatwood stick wet kindling can be started. Melting canning wax and soaking it up with cotton balls works even better for wet starts, but is much more of a pain to start with a ferro rod. Love the channel, great looking pooch :)
Excellent video. What I like most about your vids is their efficiency. You edit so that a 6-minute video has 6 minutes of info; so many channels have vids that are 2-3 times as long as they need to be. One thing I'd recommend, which I don't see many guys mention, is the superiority of a butane torch over a standard Bic or any soft-flame lighter. They're wind-proof, refillable (mine are clear, so I can see how much fuel is left), and burn much hotter than a Bic. Regardless, I love your channel; I just subbed!
Thanks for the sub! I imagine a torch would be bombproof for starting a fire. For me, I choose a normal BIC because they are cheaper and I can use it with or without fuel. I have not had much luck with the piezo-electric switch in the torches being able to start select natural tinder like the ferrocerium rod in an empty BIC. Granted, I have not tried all of them mainly because the fuel always leaked out of them and the ones I did try didnt work with natural tinder when empty.
I live outside Wilmington NC and I have been in a few rough spots in the winter and if not for a ferro rod I would have entered into hypothermia without a doubt.
You aren't far from me. You should check out the Coastal Carolina tinder video if you haven't already. That was filmed in Stones Creek Gamelands about 40 minutes north of you
Nice video. I've started to pack a film canister loaded with alcohol soaked cotton balls and it's been great. Every ball call start a few fires and I can cram about ten in a canister. Nice and light and easy to replace. Gotta work on my fat wood collection.
Loving to use my Ferro rod to start natural tinder I’ve collected and processed I cringed when you said to use solar ignition when the sun is out to save resources.... but dagnabit you’re right! Valid and important point, so thank you sir! (Still gonna use my ferro rod but will start using solar more predominantly lol)
I really like how you shared about using the solar source and that it helps conserve resources .I to run a simular kit I use trick birthday candles and a piece of file for steel and flint fires this also gives me a dry place to strike matches if I need it.
They do actually, for example the bigger UCO candles I use come in paraffin, citronella, and beeswax versions. The beeswax last about 12 hours and the other two only about 9. They cost more, but last longer.
