  • ... on the request of Mr. William Shriver, here is the uncut Help on the Way ~ slipnot ! ~ Franklin's Tower.
LoloYodel 2 camera-angle remix (with special thanks to the two angles of Lazy Cow !).
The 1st of a two night stand at Hampton under the disguise of "The Warlocks". These two shows were often described as simply magical.
This 2nd set starts off with a huge bang with a BIG "Help on the Way ~ slipknot ~ Franklin's Tower" which seems to have all the necessary energy and inspiration (in addition to it being played for the 1st time since Sept 1985). The "Eyes of the World" which follows, after "Victim", is very strong, lively & dynamic. The "Need a Miracle" out of space is rockin' with Jerry swaying to the beat ! This segues into "The Wheel" (on target) then "Gimme Some Lovin'". Although Weir turns to Billy (Kreutzmann) shrugging his shoulders, as if to say "not this time, sorry, Jer's decision", this is also nailed and hammered. This set ends with a pristine and glissening "Morning Dew". "Bid You Goodnight" encore (only the 4th time played since New Years 1978 !)
    Set 1:
    Foolish Heart
    Walkin' Blues
    Candyman
    Me And My Uncle ~
    Big River
    Stagger Lee
    Queen Jane Approximately
    Bird Song
    Promised Land
    Set 2:
    Help On The Way ~
    Slipknot! ~
    Franklin's Tower
    Victim Or The Crime
    Eyes Of The World ~
    drums
    space ~
    I Need A Miracle ~
    The Wheel ~
    Gimme Some Lovin' ~
    Morning Dew
encore: And We Bid You Goodnight

Actual goosebumps listening to this.. They were more interested in the fun they were having and the profound experiences of the people listening in the crowd than they ever were about the money and the fame. I appreciate this music so much. It saved my life in so many ways.. I will forever be grateful.. no pun intended.. Remember kids: if you plant ice, you're gonna harvest wind..

Another time’s forgotten space... I was front row at this magical moment! Mickey came out for 2nd set and was bouncing on his throne, pumping the crowd3 up! We were all expecting China Cat but then those two notes! And the mood at the beginning of Franklin’s was total euphoria!!! Man what a memory.... chill bumps watching this. The sound here is awesome as well. I appreciate the MIDI now a bit more-Mickey’s tom work with Brent and Jerry’s MIDI during Slipknot is powerful and dark here and there! Gosh I loved this band in these exceptional years. How lucky were we then!!!!!

I’ve never seen them. Plenty of Dead an Co shows, just too young to see Jerry live. His music lives on and I am grateful I get to hear him and watch these shows at least. I consider myself lucky too for being alive at the same time as the Dead, not as lucky as you. Life would suck without Jerry

No matter how many times I watch this I'm always floored by the awesome power of this incredible musical moment in time.
The seriousness of Jerry's demeanor, the intense energy of the crowd all combined to make this an all time musical melt down for the ages.

I was there. It was a wild scene. Show billed as "Formerly the Warlocks." I had heard that the Warlocks thing and the limited ticket outlets were done at the behest of the city council, who didn't want the Deadheads overrunning the city any longer. The local business, like hotels and restaurants, on the other hand, LOVED us. Yes, we were boisterous, but we were polite and didn't fight and puke all over everything like some other concert audiences.
There were lots of extra tix around because of the way they sold them outside their normal channels. The tix themselves were beautiful, they looked like the mail-order tix from that era with the colored paper and foil-embossed lettering that read "Formerly the Warlocks." There were very few non-heads in attendance because of the stealthy marketing. People were using pieces of stickers or bits of chewing gum to stick their extra tickets onto signposts and the windows of the venue before they went in, presumably so the ticketless could come along and snag them. I saw plenty of people walking around with their fingers in the air, but just as quickly as I spotted them, someone would come along and hand them a ticket.
Once inside there was a crackling, vibrant tension in the atmosphere; we all knew something was coming, but no one knew what it would be. I had heard rumors that they had rehearsed HOTW as early as Summer 89, but they didn't play it on that tour so I figured it was just rumors. Then the first set for this show was well-played, but not atypical, so by setbreak I was thinking that maybe it was just going to be a normal show. But when they came out on stage for the second set, everyone could just feel it: something was up. Something big was coming. The exuberant tension of the crowd started swelling like a balloon as they began the count-in, and when that tension popped at the sound of the opening chords of "Help on the Way," the wave of joy that burst from the crowd almost lifted me off my feet. Such a great moment for the Grateful Dead, and such a glorious time to be a Deadhead.

Brother you hit the nail on the head with your description of the first set and into the second. It was an otherworldly feeling when Jerry hit the first notes of HOTW. Miss those extraordinary days of the late 80's tour.

The reappearance of Help>Slipknot! after a 4 year absence. The following night the boys played the first Dark Star since 84. Death Don't Have No Mercy was also performed at these shows also. Breakout city!!!! Their career was in mid peak!!! I actually listened to the second verse of Dark Star being performed live at home sitting on my bed studying for a mid-term. My friend called me from the hallway on a payphone. When I answered, I heard my friend say, "The Dead are doing a mad Dark Star Down here!" Then he walked away and left the receiver hanging with about five bucks worth of quarters in it. I got to experience it as it happened. I heard Jerry singing, "Mirror shatters in formless reflections of matter..." I had dropped him off at Logan airport earlier in the day.

    Paradise waits
On the crest of a wave
    Her angels in flame
    She has no pain
Like a child, she is pure
    She is not to blame
    Poised for flight
    Wings spread bright
    Spring from night
    Into the sun
    Don't stop to run
She can fly like a lie
    She cannot be outdone
    Tell me the cost
    I can pay
    Let me go
Tell me love is not lost
    Sell everything
    Without love, day to day,
    Insanity is king
    I will pay
    Day by day
    Anyway
    Lock, bolt and key
    Crippled but free
    I was blind
    All the time
    I was learning to see
    Help on the way
    I know only this
    I've got you today
    Don't fly away
'Cause I love what I love
And I want it that way
    I will stay
    One more day
    Like I say
    Honey, it's you
    Without love in the dream
    It will never come true
    ----------------------------------------------------
    In another time's forgotten space
Your eyes looked through your mother's face
Wildflower seed on the sand and stone
May the four winds blow you safely home
    Roll away, the dew
Roll away, roll away the dew
Roll away, roll away the dew
Roll away, roll away the dew
I'll tell you where the four winds dwell
In Franklin's tower there hangs a bell
It can ring, turn night to day
It can ring like fire when you lose your way
    Roll away, the dew
Roll away, roll away the dew
Roll away, roll away the dew
Roll away, roll away the dew
God save the child who rings that bell
I may have one good ring baby, you can't tell
One watch by night, one watch by day
If you get confused just listen to the music play
Some come to laugh their past away
Some come to make it just one more day
    Whichever way your pleasure tends
If you plant ice you're gonna harvest wind
    Roll away, the dew
Roll away, roll away the dew
Roll away, roll away the dew
Roll away, roll away the dew
I'll tell you where the four winds sleep
Like four lean hounds the lighthouse keep
Wildflower seed in the sand and wind
May the four winds blow you home again
    Roll away, the dew
Roll away, roll away the dew
Roll away, roll away the dew
Roll away, roll away the dew

Wolf re-emerged at these "Formerly The Warlocks" shows with new experimental midi capability. If you look closely you can see wires taped to the body of the guitar. This same technology was then built into Rosie which debuted the following year. Jerry used Wolf for this entire fall tour. Bobby's birthday 10/16 is considered by many to be the best show of the decade, myself included.

Dennis Campbell I remember that technical transition. There was a few shows there where the Wolf had duct tape all over the body and odd extraneous switches on it. My fave Jerry guitar, always a wonderful surprise to see him show up on stage with it every now and then in the later years.

October 8 & 9, 1989 Hampton Coliseum shows. The Grateful Dead were billed as Formerly The Warlocks for these two shows. The shows were recorded on 24 track tape which have been mastered to HCDC specification.

In fact, they let the Wolf out that Fall of '89. Heard it run round Philly.

So .... don't know if people remember the free show in D.C. on the Mall supporting affordable housing with Tracy Chapman, Indigo Girls .... and many other greats!!!!??? I mention this b/c 1 day prior to the Warlocks shows, this concert occurred and the beauty of this was the Mall filling with Deadheads from all over the country.... and the next day the road to Hampton Virginia to see Jerry and the Boys was lined with microbuses, artistically painted school buses converted to homes... etc, etc. THEN.... 2 amazing and probably the best shows that I have seen. We even had our bus broken into the first night and my tickets were stolen... but I "got a miracle" the next day and we made our money back selling banana, peanut butter sandwiches AND then we heard Help-Slip-Franklin's.... and we lived in a hippie house in D.C. on Franklin Street .... no words to describe the shows and the Help-Slip-Franklin's , just sweet music and friends all around..... wow, I feel bad for the younger generations who never will get these kind of vibes and energy... thanks for the posting the video. and ... "may the 4 winds blow you safely home..."

The ONLY thing this is lacking is the reprise of the transition lick to finish it off after the last solo instead of the fade-out, but it was so joyous and in the moment I suspect they probably just forgot and finished Franklin’s the way they were used to at that point lol. That would have been the perfect cherry on top of the return of the full H>S>F suite, but Oh well...always a hoot.
