    The Volvo V90 is the full size wagon which shares its architecture with all 60 and 90 series models (S, V, and XC). The two Volvos we've driven previously this year featured the T8 Hybrid powertrain, and this one demonstrates the evolution of the T6 gasoline version. Whereas the last-gen T6 was a transversely mounted, Turbocharged Inline Six, T6 now means a transversely mounted, turbo and supercharged 2.0L inline four, mated to a haldex-style AWD system. While there are certainly some improvements over the older powertrain, especially in the handling department, does this complex gasoline powerplant try to be too many things to too many people?
    Volvo provided the vehicle, insurance, and a tank of fuel for this review.

    I have driven this exact car with the Polestar Optimization Package (a $1295 option on the T6 AWD) and can tell you it makes a world of a difference on these cars. Shifts faster, better throttle response, more power, more torque, more power to the rear, better supercharger/turbo integration, and more responsive paddles/transmission, among other things. I wouldn't buy a new Volvo without that package.

      Mark Kibbe but it should have the gearbox software as standard. Massive rip-off to charge to sort the standard cars shortcomings. I’ve got a 2019 diesel V90. The gearbox is the weakest part of the car by far

    • @markkibbe1802
      @markkibbe1802 4 года назад +5

      @@Bottomburbsburnbums Agreed that it should be standard, especially on the R-Design. The car with the Polestar tune is how the base car should be programmed, and the optional Polestar tune should be more enthusiast-based with even more aggressive software that gets the most they can out of the hardware. I thought the gearbox was decent, but I am used to driving a P2 XC90 V8 with the atrocious 6-speed auto that has 2-second shift times and really tall gearing, so the 8 speed feels like a dual-clutch by comparison. But it could (and should) be better.

    I just picked up a V90 T5 R-Design and the greatest surprise has been how nimble and playful it is. I was expecting a much softer, more sedate car, but its steering and brakes are incredibly sharp, and even the T5 does a great job of fully utilizing its torque.
    It's also one of the most beautiful cars I've ever seen. Everything is so perfectly proportional, not a single line out of place, and I'm sure it will age incredibly well.

    I ordered one of these in January and got it about a week ago, same loadout minus the big wheels (thanks Ohio). Above riding really soft on comfort mode, she likes to dance and it's surprising. It really doesn't feel like you're heaving a ship behind you it just turns and goes, their suspension setup is tremendous, barely any side hop and it feels the same at 20mph and 80mph. I haven't really gassed it as I am letting the engine break in but they take advantage of the supercharger, greatly. The torque under 2K is tremendous, the transmission knows where to stay most of the time. It's a TF80 based Japanese transmission and they've always been a little wonky dating back to 2006+ Volvos however they're very reliable for the power. It's a very good car, I highly recommend looking into them, unfortunately the Bursting Blue color is out for '21 as it's a very deep color, blue in daylight but purple in sunset light.

      Volvos suspensions have improved. The 850 R and s70 sporty cars were harsh over bumps and did this weird dance at the rear end in corners around bumps. But that characteristic is even in the last generation's Volvos, where they seem to side step over ruts and bumps in corners. It was a particular body movement characteristic. The new ones just shrugs them off. While the new ones wearing the largest tires may not absorb the biggest bumps and ruts as well as some other makes, they do a lot better than older Volvos.
      I feel, despite the smaller engines and compromises in the transmissions, Volvo is making their absolutely best cars now. I wish they'd tighten up on reliability but past Volvos have been a pain in the butt too in terms of reliability. I think a bit more fine tuning of the suspension and they equal the German cars. Maybe a tip higher in terms of interior materials as well. They're getting close to the Germans. Closer than they've ever been.

    I think people over estimate how much they need "fast" cars.
    I'm a big believer that a 5-6 sec 0-60 is great for an everyday vehicle. I also couldn't care less how many cylinders the vehicle has (my everyday is a 4 and I have owned 4,6,8,12) the difference is sound and ability to adjust to inputs from the throttle (not to mention front end weight.)

    • @michaelpowell4823
      @michaelpowell4823 4 года назад

      @Blue Steel If you look at the vehicles that sell the most you are absolutely correct most are right below 200HP.
      The problem I believe is manufacturers limit the HP for fuel economy standards instead of tuning the engine which could deliver more power and get better milage. By that I mean develop the torque curve as low as possible in the RPM range; giving the driver a better feel of acceleration while also creating a system where the driver does not ring the engine out in order to move. Less RPMs means less fuel consumption.
      No matter what a 300 HP engine uses the same amount of fuel; doesn't matter how many cylinders, or how it is generated either by turbo or supercharger or naturally.

    I have a 2019 V90 CC T6 with the Polestar Optimization. The Polestar power and torque gains are only 14 and 30 respectively but it really improves the drivability of the car. Better throttle response, shifting seems faster, and torque bias is slightly more towards the rear.
    Would argue that the back storage would have been better if Volvo hadn't sloped the hatch as much (more like the V60). Also there is almost no underfloor if it has a spare. So not a lot of storage, IMO. Overall, I really like it - biggest complaint is the gas mileage is disappointing.

    Surprised to hear about the gearbox misbehaving in manual mode. My V90 Cross Country (in Europe) will not shift up in manual mode on its own, also it shifts down anywhere in the band. That said, when I drive in the Alps or similar roads, I almost always drive in manual as the car has no clue what lays ahead and takes you halfway through a hairpin in 6th gear if left in auto. Other than that, I love it.

    I drive a v90 T4 Momentum (turbo petrol, entry level) here in the UK. It's a family car. Shift points are irrelevant when everyone around here does 5-10 MPH under the speed limit wherever they go, the roads aren't wide enough for two cars to pass each other safely, and every street is constantly choked with traffic. It feels like the QE2. The brilliant infotainment, adaptive cruise control/braking, build quality, and ride comfort are the real selling points. Forget dynamic mode, especially when petrol is $7.15/gal. Just leave it in eco and take advantage of the freewheeling functionality.

    People in the USA and I guess North America are nuts to prefer an xc90 or xc60 over this beautiful wagon and the equally beautiful v60. It's just nuts. Volvo wagons used to be very popular all over the USA when they weren't that stylish. They work great. Volvo has put enough performance into these cars for the everyday driver, the interior is fantastic, the comfort and the usability, the styling is gorgeous, yet the roads are full of xc90s and xc60s. The SUVs are nice but not everyone needs one. I go literally months without seeing a current Volvo wagon though I see a good amount of older ones. Buy wagons again, America.
