Just my opinion. I think Samsung should absolutely design their own software. Same as Apple does with iOS. There would be a significantly larger amount of flexibility and they could really pull in some beginner Apple users.

I have it set to toggle auto rotate when the screen is on, activate Google Assistant with a long press on screen on, double press for flash light all the time, single press for play/pause media with screen off, and long press to switch between silent and sound mode when the screen is off. It's fantastic.
The way cell phone cameras are going it's not long (next 10-20 years) until we'll be seeing full frame quality from our pockets. I mean personally I'll always stick with a DSLR but it's crazy to see the change in our own lifetime of the evolution of cameras 📷📽

You mean phone cameras will reach the quality of DSLR cameras of today in 10 years or phone cameras will be as good as DSLRs in 10 years ? The latter i think is unlikely, DSLRs will always be better as they also evolve. It could still be possible as big improvements will come from AI enhancing pictures, but in terms of the real world physics and raw pictures, DSLRs always have a big advantage.

I think major design changes in smartphones will happen really slow now. Considering the fact that how far we’ve come in this industry, a bit of saturation is happening and a more obvious question is being asked as to how much power and performance you can put in a supercomputer that fits right in your pocket. I’m sure there are still great advances that are going to happen, but I don’t think they’ll happen as quickly as the ones we got to see in the last decade. But still, this is an amazing computer.
mounorman idk about that. The iPhone has had a much faster processor for a couple of years now and it’s not a deal breaker or anything. I think we’ve gotten to a point where smartphones are generally speaking fast enough to do pretty much anything (except bitcoin mining or vr games and stuff)

I think you and everyone else are completely overexaggerating and putting way to much emphasis on 'the exact same phone as last year'. Simply isn't true. Exactly pretty much everything has changed for the better with some things like the speakers and camera in a huge way. That's more than the average yearly phone upgrade from other manufacturers like Apple or Google, yet I never heard a peep with the upgrade from Pixel to Pixel 2. It shows bias.

Another thing to keep in mind is that upgrades will become less and less noticable because simply there will be not much left to innovate on
You are right for the most part, the phone is very new, lots of cool new features, but the reason people see it as the same is the body style. They did not change anything on the physical look of the phone, personally I am glad because, let's face it, it's the sexiest phone on the market. BUT, as much as I love a good Apple bashing, they changed a ton with the X. And Google changed everything but the stock android with the pixel 2 lol (for better or worse).
Pixel and Pixel 2 are completely different phones, and that's understandable since Google has only had two tries at this game. Once you get to the later generations like Apple and Samsung have, shit like the iPhone S line starts to happen. There s9 is basically the s8+ with a smarter fingerprint placement, and that's not a bad thing. I don't know why you have to insist that every fucking thing Samsung does is a breakthrough.
I wouldn't consider it $800+ worthy of an upgrade from the S8 for many people. It's certainly a good upgrade and it wasn't right of him to make that claim, but unless you take photos frequently you won't notice too much of a difference other than speed and a few more computer functionalities.

The Galaxy S7 Edge for example is more than good enough for everything you'd ever need in a phone from looks to performance and then some. who tf needs a blood pressure sensor on their phone? The snapdragon 845 is certainly a much faster _chipset_ Everyone mentions the camera, and the screen is a little better, but quite frankly i don't find brightness or color accuracy a problem on phones. The ram is mostly for showing off although i guess more is always nice (unless you want a PC)
Anton Helsgaun blood pressure is a serious issue for many people, an easy to use measurement instrument would save many lives, higher brightness makes the screen more visible in the sunlight(that's if you go outside your basement, or live in a country where there is sunlight)

The iPhone X was the first real innovation from Apple in years. It was a good first step, and despite my disappointment in Apple for the past few years, I'm finally excited about what they're doing again. However, the Galaxy S9 is literally the first phone to ever have variable aperture... That right there is innovative my friend. The only thing the same is the shell style, and it's sexy as hell, why change it until there's a better option?
he's calling me an isheep for the 6 to 8 designs. in my opinion, to have a variable aperture is to make picture sharper which Samsung already done it heavily by software. Samsung photos are known to be oversharpen by software. so its kinda useless and no one prints a photo taken by a phone, most ends up in instagram. the only reason left is to cut light hitting the sensor in a bright day light, but nobody never had any problems with it. I think its a gimmick. I bet 98% buyer will just let the aperture open wide. the shell style, many company already have a roadmap of what design and technology will be for the future, they are just milking it, and that includes Apple ;D
Drastic XZ the best phone of 2017??? Majority would beg to differ. And Samsung makes their own cameras. They just let Sony produce some of the sensors to offload some of the work required for producing them in house. And just because Samsung adds new features after the competition to their phones, that doesn't mean that they copy.
I now have the best of both Galaxy S9 & Pixel. Biggest worry I had was user experience coming from a pixel. Took a while but was able to get the S9 to look and feel so close to my pixel. Download Material Theme from Samsung themes and then get Action Launcher from Play store. You can even have the weather widget from pixel via "Another Widget" from play store. Uninstaller/disable all the Samsung apps but keep the really useful ones like Samsung Pay. Don't forget to side load the Google Now Extension for Action Launcher which brings back to good old useful days of Google assistant (way better than the current Pixel Launcher assistant since you will have all your reminders and personal stuff front and center instead of the news) . Now you have the best of both worlds.

I think you and everyone else are completely overexaggerating and putting way to much emphasis on 'the exact same phone as last year'. Simply isn't true. Exactly pretty much everything has changed for the better with some things like the speakers and camera in a huge way. That's more than the average yearly phone upgrade from other manufacturers like Apple or Google, yet I never heard a peep with the upgrade from Pixel to Pixel 2. It shows bias.
WGACA you’re biase too because people say it looks like the exact same phone as last year it has just better specs, apple has done the exact same thing for google i dont know but apple has made some pretty significant changes if you ask me. Another thing to keep in mind is that upgrades will become less and less noticable because simply there will be not much left to innovate on
You are right for the most part, the phone is very new, lots of cool new features, but the reason people see it as the same is the body style. They did not change anything on the physical look of the phone, personally I am glad because, let's face it, it's the sexiest phone on the market. BUT, as much as I love a good Apple bashing, they changed a ton with the X. And Google changed everything but the stock android with the pixel 2 lol (for better or worse).
Pixel and Pixel 2 are completely different phones, and that's understandable since Google has only had two tries at this game. Once you get to the later generations like Apple and Samsung have, shit like the iPhone S line starts to happen. There s9 is basically the s8+ with a smarter fingerprint placement, and that's not a bad thing. I don't know why you have to insist that every fucking thing Samsung does is a breakthrough.
I wouldn't consider it $800+ worthy of an upgrade from the S8 for many people. It's certainly a good upgrade and it wasn't right of him to make that claim, but unless you take photos frequently you won't notice too much of a difference other than speed and a few more computer functionalities.

The Galaxy S7 Edge for example is more than good enough for everything you'd ever need in a phone from looks to performance and then some. These phones have no new legitimate features that warrant an entirely new outrageously expensive purchase.

Everyone mentions the camera, and the screen is a little better, but quite frankly i don't find brightness or color accuracy a problem on phones. The ram is mostly for showing off although i guess more is always nice (unless you want a PC)
Anton Helsgaun blood pressure is a serious issue for many people, an easy to use measurement instrument would save many lives, higher brightness makes the screen more visible in the sunlight(that's if you go outside your basement, or live in a country where there is sunlight)

You definitely can't say it's the same (sure as hell an understatement), but saying it's a worthy upgrade from the S8 for $800+ is over-the-top. It's certainly good, but not fantastic.

in my opinion, to have a variable aperture is to make picture sharper which Samsung already done it heavily by software. Samsung photos are known to be oversharpen by software. so its kinda useless and no one prints a photo taken by a phone, most ends up in instagram.
the only reason left is to cut light hitting the sensor in a bright day light, but nobody never had any problems with it. I think its a gimmick.

They just let Sony produce some of the sensors to offload some of the work required for producing them in house. And just because Samsung adds new features after the competition to their phones, that doesn't mean that they copy.

Thanks very much for this! Just got a Samsung s9 and heard a lot about the camera, wouldn't have had a clue what to do if it weren't for this!
I now have the best of both Galaxy S9 & Pixel. Biggest worry I had was user experience coming from a pixel. Took a while but was able to get the S9 to look and feel so close to my pixel.
Download Material Theme from Samsung themes and then get Action Launcher from Play store. You can even have the weather widget from pixel via "Another Widget" from play store. Uninstaller/disable all the Samsung apps but keep the really useful ones like Samsung Pay.
Don't forget to side load the Google Now Extension for Action Launcher which brings back to good old useful days of Google assistant (way better than the current Pixel Launcher assistant since you will have all your reminders and personal stuff front and center instead of the news) . Now you have the best of both worlds.
