Not only do you have the coolest mom ever and the cutest dog ever but you just might be the best story teller since the great paul harvey !!! Mr rowe you are truly blessed.
Hoagie I thought the same thing. I replied too before I read yours and said the only thing missing was the line, "and now you know the rest of the story..."
I meet and had dinner with Alan Hale when I was a young man. What a wonderful experience that was. He and his wife were so very gracious. We later went to a monster truck show at Angel Stadium which was a less that wonderful experience. There was roughly a 1/3 of the seating for the crowd along the home to first base side. but there were a few people spread out around the non-designated areas including behind home plate. Just behind second base was one heck of a mean looking dragster. The announcer was telling us how this was the most power nitro dragster ever made. In the big show later in the week it would have a higher ratio of nitro fuel and four big dirt tires on the back instead of two and that they would only burst the engine for a second. Tied to the back of the dragster was a big thick rope there to make sure it stopped in time before it reached home base. Soon after the engine started up with a deafening roar and the driver hit the gas and let go of the break. The dragster leap forward quicker than a cat pouncing on prey, racing over second base. When it reached the pitchers mound the engine cut off. But then suddenly it kicked on again and the dragster leaped again now out of control and racing toward the wall behind home base. When it impacted the wall it made a terrible sound and the big knobby dirt dragger tires flew, almost in slow motion, well over a hundred feet in the air, up and over the wall and into the sparsely populated seating behind home plate. Crowds of people ran to the scene, including, as I recall, Alan Hale. Soon after the Life Flight helicopter show up and took the driver and a couple spectators away to the hospital. I didn't see Alan again after that but that's OK. I will always remember him fondly and how fortunate I was to have had a chance to know him.
I love Freddy so much! The way he looks at you is just so sweet. He has so much love in his eyes. My buddy passed away in April and I don't think I'll ever get over it. She was my best friend and always by my side. Thank you for sharing Freddy with us. He makes me smile. ♥
Alan Hale Jr. could be in all those movies and yet been lovingly remembered as the Captain of a small boat on a 3-hour tour that became shipwrecked. The Skipper will be remembered forever since episodes of Gilligan's Island play somewhere in the world to this day and probably will for time immemorial. Mike is great in 2018 and is still great in 2021. Thanks for the video.
I love this! And the many roles of Alan hale! I think I have seen many of those movies. The name I knew Jonas grumpy, because of a silly trivia game! I always liked seeing him in those movies! Rip skipper! And thanks Mike for the story! It bought tears to my eyes!
first time ive ever subscribed without a 1 month try and see, i didnt even watch the episode first, its Mike Rowe the only man who still has common sense
I remember him as the Blacksmith in Hangem High, Clint Eastwoods movie....I am like hey!! Thats the Skipper"!. He was good in the westerns, he was good anywhere
It's a good thing you didn't fire, Freddy. Damned unions and all. An excellent backstory on Al, Mike! He was a hell of a guy., and I would dare say not lazy. I used to think I wish I had so and so's voice., and I found myself wishing I had your voice. But the sad truth is - its the person behind the voice where all the magic happens. If I had your voice, I'd still be me and none the better or worse for it. Everybody is special in their own way I suppose. Kudos to men like yourself, Al and as always., Paul Harvey. Good day.
Mike...You have a way of making even your 'live read' commercials entertaining....which, I suppose, is why you've begun to rival those that you tell stories about, and the man who made that storytelling format popular! :-)
Little known fact, Mr. Rowe started doing those shows on cable TV where they sold all sorta of stuff oike jewelry and knives and sutch. That voice and persona just work well..
As soon as you said, "Jonas Grumby," I had it. One of myall-time prized stumpers is asking people if they know the Skipper's and the Professor's names.
Alan Hale Sr., his father was a great actor too. Always remember him as Little John in the 1938 movie “the Adventures of Robin Hood”, with Olivia de Havilland and Errol Flynn.
The way you put that story together about Allen Hale was awesome and no I didn't know any of those movies that he was in but I sure do want to watch them. Thanks for the story.
Yes, The Skipper too.. He had some good roles... Playing the prison guard in that movie with Kirk Douglas (can't remember the name) one of my favorites.
That was such a nice surprise today to get a new one of these. Great episode and loved Freddie in the beginning. I would be a great employee Mike. Please look at my resume. It is up for you and they said I was a 96% match for the job. Thanks ziprecruiter for sponsoring this month. I do love these so much. P.S. I also promise to never lick your face.
Mike, huge fan and I found this from your FB post. After listening to this you brought back a part of my life that has been missing for a long, long time. The only thing missing from this video is the closing statement, "and now....you know the rest of the story." Great delivery, great story I'm your newest subscriber.
Alan Hale was...simply... likeable. The kind of big teddy bear that made one glad he was nice, because if he were a bad, evil guy... people would have gotten hurt. The Skipper was a very likeable man. I liked him. Still do.
apb5000 As a little kid I saw Alan Hale play a heavy in some old western. He was so convincing that it took me a while to figure out that I was watching the “SKIPPER”!
Huge fan of yours Mike, from your Dirty Jobs show to everything I can see you in on you tube. You should think of politics, your very smart and full of common sense, something alot of people lack these days!
Interesting story. My family has had a couple remote connections to the Gilligan cast. One of our neighbor's was Jim Backus's 1st cousin. Then my dad's cousin Bill who lived in California for a while, he worked at a car dealer near Los Angeles back in the mid 80s. A guy came in one day and started chatting with him. Bill got to know the fellow pretty well and would visit the dealership regularly and would hang out and chat. You might be familiar with the man, who once rode a horse for hours just to hitch a ride. Yep, the man my dad's cousin got to know well was Alan Hale himself. That's my own "The Way I Heard It" from my dad's cousin Bill Hackett, who passed away two years before Mr. Hale. Perhaps they are still swapping stories in heaven. 😉
Mike, I personally will continue to enjoy your content through your podcast, but I want to offer my best wishes for your success on RUclips. The more listeners you reach the better.
as somebody else posted "The rest of the story" very well done. Please do more as paul harvey is one of my favorites and still listen to his work today I do wish you would do more and get them out to the air/ wire/ net ect Thanks
So much better than the one about the woman jumping off the Hollywood sign. Okay, I'll keep watching if they're going to be like this. Thanks Mike! :-)
The story sounded so familiar, but I couldn't place the actor until you said "Jonas Grumby". I remembered the name because it was one of the original Trivial Pursuit questions from the 1980s. That's when I knew you were talking about Alan Hale, Jr. I very recently watched an old movie on RUclips that he co-starred in, a 1962 British-American comedy titled "The Iron Maiden". It is an intelligent, very funny, and entertaining movie that I highly recommend viewing. Alan Hale was great as usual.
Wow I got that one 2/3 the way threw . But every time I see him in a movie. I say "Hay! There's the Skipper" You know, I bet you do too. Retro active greatness, IMO.
Aww! I miss that show! Why don't they make shows like that anymore!? Also, Oh my gosh...Fred is a riot! He is totally unconcerned with what you have to say, haha.
Mike I need your help! I can’t get this story out of my head and I can’t remember the name of the episode, and the internet is doing me no help! What is the story of how the Nobel peace prize came to be. That story changed my life, and I need to hear it again! Thank you for the amazing work you do!
Thanks Mike, I really appreciate your stuff. I look forward to it. I have a question, how long does it take you to prepare your material before you're happy with it? Do you use an outline and do you write the commercials as well? Thanks again, you're a pleasure to listen to. Travis
I loved listening to him when I was a kid. I still remember being with my mom on our way to her parents' house on Christmas Eve in a snowstorm, trying to figure out who he was talking about. 😂
DOGS DO TO MAKE GREAT EMPLOYEES! They even get depressed just like real employees. My dog, a truck dog got depressed when I went local. During 9/11 firefighters started hiding in the rubble because only finding dead people was taking a toll on the dogs mental state.
Mike Rowe is incredible! I love his voice and his timing! Great story about the Skipper. Mike is an amazing story teller!
He's a cross between Paul Harvey and Earl Nightingale while being entirely himself.
Excellent story.
Reminiscent of Paul Harvey's "The rest of the story ' series.

I love the surprise of who your story is about each time you post one. Thanks again for sharing Mike. Looking forward to the next one.
Thankyou. The twist in the tail of these tales makes them complete.
SKIPPER!!!!
That was fantastic! Thank you, Mike Rowe for telling the tale of Alan Hale, Jr.!
I love Freddy so much! The way he looks at you is just so sweet. He has so much love in his eyes. My buddy passed away in April and I don't think I'll ever get over it. She was my best friend and always by my side. Thank you for sharing Freddy with us. He makes me smile. ♥
Thanks Mike, I love the way you tell your stories. I grew up with Gilligan's Island and this insight on one of it's most beloved characters was great!
I love this format. Thanks Mike!
Outstanding work, Mike! Awesome story! Absolutely love these!
Excellent as always, Mike. Thank you!
The Skipper was great on the Andy Griffith show, too. I really enjoy these tales. God bless and keep you and your family, and staff; Mr Rowe
What a great and wonderful story that shows the character of the man. Alan Hale has been a favorite. 💖

As always, thank you Mike Rowe for being you!!!
I’m in awe,again. Thanks.
Time well spent. Thank you :-)

Great story and awesome story teller
I like how these videos always end; with a smile on my face.
first time ive ever subscribed without a 1 month try and see, i didnt even watch the episode first, its Mike Rowe the only man who still has common sense
Ahat
Excellent series!! Love this show and click it fast enough when the notification pops up.
He did some great western characters before Gilligan's Isle. Quite a shock to somebody who first watched him as the skipper.
Wow! Thats it - just WOW! Great storytelling.
I remember him as the Blacksmith in Hangem High, Clint Eastwoods movie....I am like hey!! Thats the Skipper"!. He was good in the westerns, he was good anywhere
FINALLY I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR "THE WAY I HEARD IT" EPISODES TO RETURN TO RUclips SINCE EPISODE 30. THANKS FOR ALL THE HARD WORK MIKE.
Awesome way to tell the history. These are great!
Excellent Story Thank q Sir !

Dang... got me again! Enthralling storytelling, my good man.
There’s my baby! Freddie!

Thank you for that...I may be one of the very few people who did know who Al was, and I will never forget who he became.
Freddy looks good!
I like the theme music
Thanks for another video
:) Awesome! Thanks, Mike!
You tell the BEST stories, Mike! I love you. And your dog.😁💖🇺🇸
As soon as you said, "Jonas Grumby," I had it. One of myall-time prized stumpers is asking people if they know the Skipper's and the Professor's names.
Oh my goodness...
you are very good Mike!
The Rowe binge is ON!!!
Alan Hale Sr., his father was a great actor too. Always remember him as Little John in the 1938 movie “the Adventures of Robin Hood”, with Olivia de Havilland and Errol Flynn.
I love watching these at 2x speed as much as I love listening to the podcasts at that speed.
The way you put that story together about Allen Hale was awesome and no I didn't know any of those movies that he was in but I sure do want to watch them. Thanks for the story.
His dad was famous
Jr was a nepo baby
Yes, The Skipper too.. He had some good roles... Playing the prison guard in that movie with Kirk Douglas (can't remember the name) one of my favorites.

What a great story!
Rowe is the man!
Seeing Alan Hale play a Villain (hang 'em high w/ Eastwood) is really unnerving.
Huge fan of yours Mike, from your Dirty Jobs show to everything I can see you in on you tube. You should think of politics, your very smart and full of common sense, something alot of people lack these days!
Exceptional!

We all loved The Skipper.
By the way,
You’re not half bad yourself.
I didn’t think the podcast would work on video but you killed. Maybe that’s why I am a trucker and not in charge of creative stuff. Subscribed.
Great voice for a microphone.
Awesome

Looks like Freddy has a fan club! 🐕 🐶
Alan Hale Jr. was also in an episode of The Andy Griffith Show. he played the part of a farmer who tried to steal Barney,s girl.
Oh man I think I remember that!
That was awesome
I just realized I was missing you in Facebook. Now that I've found your RUclips channel I've subscribed.
I'd still love to hear how he got roped into playing the sheriff in _The Giant Spider Invasion_ .
Freddy sounds like a few 8th grade students I taught over the years! Thank goodness I’m retired!
Mike - Love the series - please keep them coming. Have been trying to figure out what brand watch you are wearing in these videos - please do tell...
Aww! I miss that show! Why don't they make shows like that anymore!? Also, Oh my gosh...Fred is a riot! He is totally unconcerned with what you have to say, haha.

Awsome
And now you know the rest of the story!
This had Paul Harvey written all over it. I would be happy if Mike picked up where Paul left off.
Me too Dark Side !!!
I loved listening to him when I was a kid. I still remember being with my mom on our way to her parents' house on Christmas Eve in a snowstorm, trying to figure out who he was talking about. 😂
Isnt this actually Alan Hale JR? His father, Alan Hale, was also an actor.
Heather Kadera , yes, it is Alan Hale, Jr.
Yeah. Mr. Know-it-all Rowe got it wrong.
Zip Recruiter is one of the best job search sites I've used.
DOGS DO TO MAKE GREAT EMPLOYEES! They even get depressed just like real employees. My dog, a truck dog got depressed when I went local. During 9/11 firefighters started hiding in the rubble because only finding dead people was taking a toll on the dogs mental state.

Happy to subscribe, to stay in touch.
Thanks
Mike, Love ya man. Are you auditioning for Paul Harvey's place in history?
Cool!
Love Skipper
Did you mention Hang 'em High? He played a Blacksmith.
Just watched that a was interesting to watch Alan Hale Jr as a bad guy trying to hang Clint Eastwood's character.
What kind of dog is Fred? I have a very similar pup and in not sure what he is.
Maybe a Cairn Terrior?
Thanks for picking up where Paul Harvey left off. And by the way America....MIKE ROWE FOR PRESIDENT!!!!!
Mike I hate to say it but you’re site is going to the dogs ;) but I still love it.
