I maintain that this is the best transformation for Goku in any of the games. You can feel the anger but theres definitely that sadness and desperation. This is heroic Goku at his finest

Goku's not a hero and Toriyama was annoyed that the anime staff made Goku appear heroic compared to his source manga version, but anime tries to appeal to kids.

3:37 is where I still feel that intense feeling since I saw that the first time. Nothing changed this was really so well made the music and Gokus rage. You can feel it literally.
8:10 There saddest moment here isnt when Krillin died, its when Goku overcame his naive view of everyone evil, and realized some people can't be changed and actually questioned their evil. Huge departure from Dragonball....

honestly nothing will top the story mode and cutscenes in any of the proceeding DBZ titles. i love how they modeled the scenes almost directly after the episode with little details or dialogue changed, even the chapter/episode announcer.
Budokai 1 is unmatched against 2 and 3! The dialogues, monologues and emotions in the cut scenes are pure from the heart 💯! Which is why it’s the greatest

This was my first time experiencing the story of DBZ, and the direction of this scene (with this soundtrack) is utterly iconic and burned into my mind as a child... even though they downplayed just how animalistic Goku became. He threatened to kill his own son if he got in his way, which added to the scene, but it's alright because everything else was handled so well.
People forget how much of a shock it was to see Goku's transformation. It didn't even need to be directly stated what a Super Saiyan was, because it's just understood intuitively when witnessed. The whole arc built up to it, and Goku *chose* to stay behind on a planet on the verge of detonation, just to settle the score. He really should have died, as that's what was thematically meant to happen. And then the power of marketing brought him back.
I will always love Dragon Ball... until the end of DBZ, anyway. GT and Super can fuck themselves.
My favorite moment from this game might honestly be 9:30, just him screaming with no way out as the planet explodes is just something else. When 5 year old me played for the first time it sent chills down my spine
The music that starts to play when Goku gives his Hope of the Universe speech still, to this day, gives me massive goosebumps. Nothing will ever top this soundtrack

This was the first DBZ game I ever played and the first time I saw anything after the Frieza saga.
I'd seen the Vegeta and Frieza sagas on TV and I thought it ended there because it came full circle, but after a while I heard rumours about Frieza coming back as part machine, Frieza's father and Trunks, and then androids attacking. The Budokai games got me into seeing the rest of the anime and the Cell and Buu sagas certainly did not disappoint 😁😁
