WD 40 does prevent rust but it has to thoroughly removed before you can reblue but In sure you know that. Hot water rinse and towel dry is what I do then reblue. I just don’t remove old blue until I’m ready to reblue.

Sulfuric acid, well I have 20 gallons of the stuff undiluted.
I guess you're free to experiment as you wish. Just buying the Muratic acid seemed relatively uncomplicated. I'm not at all familiar with the reaction of sulphuric acid and gun steel, so you're on your own there. Good luck.

Chances are your two guns are not blued to begin with . You said your 1911 is made of stainless steel. If it is "black" over that SS then it is either gunkoted or some sort of cerokote. You mentioned a 922 revolver. Is it the H&R 922 or the Taurus 992? If you have a Taurus, yours might be made of titanium and also not blued.

@@barbandrob1 I tried vinegar and it worked a little. I have not completed it yet. Some people use fine sand paper and to be honest that's probably the best for the slide. The barrel came off with metal polish cream and a rag after soaking in vinegar. I started the project but never finished. It's on my list.

I've got a question. I have a late roman helmet, unfortunatly it's blued. (i dont know if its hot blued or cold blued) does it matter? Does your way remove both kinds? Also, is it requred to fully submerge a part? can it be enough to simply drench a piece of cloth with the acid and wipe it over the helmet? Would that work? (the helmet is rather bulky and has internal liner) with kind regards.

I'm not experienced in this sort of stuff but I have a RIA 1911 GI, If I were to remove the finnish and keep it the way it is after I'm done would I need to do anything to it like keep it coated in something?
@@lorenzodemedici2299 It's simple, you care for it like any other gun and keep the finish lightly oiled like you would a blued gun. Gun bluing both inhibits rust and helps hold oil on the surface further inhibiting rust... which is why most steel guns are blued. The difference is that you'll have to be a little more diligent in keeping the gun oiled and carefully watch for rust to start forming because it will be more prone to it.
@@bgpowley but if its already sliver can I still do this? I am asking bc i want to polish it right up quickly without using the vinegar steps you see ppl are doing online. Or do you think i should just simply wash it clean with dish washing soap then just go for the polish?

The concentrations definitely vary though, I get a 34% solution at the local pool store that I’ll dilute to suit the job. Do you do any bluing and what do you use, nitre?

As far as bluing, yes. I have a Nitre blue salt tank and I can do some rust bluing...but only for myself, not for customers. Hot bluing gets sent out.
Muriatic acid is a compound of hydrochloric acids found in volcanoes and mammals stomachs. Also, sold in most local home improvement stores. You need to add oil to the surface of the metal to prevent it from flash rusting.

so I've been looking for a chrome 1911 for a long time...and now I'll just do this.
This removes bluing. Removing chrome is another entirely different process.
After removing the bluing, if I want to keep the steel as is, should it be treated with anything to help prevent rust, or simply keep it oiled?

It was removed in order to gunsmith and refinish the gun.

I bought cement muriatic acid and dropped it in and it didnt work. It sizzled but color never changed
I'm guessing your gun wasn't blued. Only works on bluing.m

I wouldn't know...this is about removing bluing from steel. Aluminum is anodized, not blued.
Do not use on aluminum it will start to eat the aluminium fairly quick

No, because There's no advantage to your suggestion....and now you have a cloth rag to deal with. Just dip it in the acid, neutralize, rinse, oil.

Just get a gallon of Muriatic, any percentage, at the hardware store and use it straight out of the bottle. it's all explained in the video.
