    After removing the bluing, if I want to keep the steel as is, should it be treated with anything to help prevent rust, or simply keep it oiled?

  • @guaporeturns9472
    @guaporeturns9472 3 года назад

    WD 40 does prevent rust but it has to thoroughly removed before you can reblue but In sure you know that. Hot water rinse and towel dry is what I do then reblue. I just don’t remove old blue until I’m ready to reblue.

    Dude super video. Hey so I used muradic acid one time in an old motorcycle gas tank and it almost instantly rusted so with this method using the wd40 or I assume gun oil would work as well since they are basically the same thing how would you prevent long term rust. That sure beats the wire wheel and the hours I spend, thank you. I'll still need the wire wheel to some degree but this is going to save me a lot of time. Curious, will sulfuric acid work as well or might it damage or pit the metal? Unfortunately, I "used" to be able to purchase technical hydrochloric acid, (the real name for muriatic acid), but they stopped selling it to plebes at the pharmacy. I can buy muriatic at the hardware store but they are charging you for say 25% acid and 75% water, I'd rather just pay for the acid and dilute as I see fit as water is free, and distilled water is way cheaper then a diluted acid water. in a 4L jug I'm paying for 3L of water, when I can dilute myself. Sulfuric acid, well I have 20 gallons of the stuff undiluted.

    • @brianpowley6108
      @brianpowley6108 2 месяца назад

      I guess you're free to experiment as you wish.
      Just buying the Muratic acid seemed relatively uncomplicated.
      I'm not at all familiar with the reaction of sulphuric acid and gun steel, so you're on your own there.
      Good luck.

      @@lorenzodemedici2299 It's simple, you care for it like any other gun and keep the finish lightly oiled like you would a blued gun. Gun bluing both inhibits rust and helps hold oil on the surface further inhibiting rust... which is why most steel guns are blued. The difference is that you'll have to be a little more diligent in keeping the gun oiled and carefully watch for rust to start forming because it will be more prone to it.

      @bgpowley  5 лет назад

      @@matthias4300 It isn't pure 100 % hydrochloric acid. The solutions are anywhere between 14 to 30% HCI

      Brian Powley Right, I was just saying that muriatic acid is the same as HCl in case the other guy was having a hard time finding it. The concentrations definitely vary though, I get a 34% solution at the local pool store that I’ll dilute to suit the job. Do you do any bluing and what do you use, nitre?

      @@matthias4300 correct...I wasn't arguing with you. I just making sure Luis didn't happen to get 100% HCI and think it was the same thing. Woof!
      I try to find 18% and that seems to work good enough.
      As far as bluing, yes. I have a Nitre blue salt tank and I can do some rust bluing...but only for myself, not for customers.
      Hot bluing gets sent out.

    What is the wd40 used for? Also does it have to be a specific muriatic acid brand?

    • @Mrjackietreehorn
      @Mrjackietreehorn 2 года назад

      Muriatic acid is a compound of hydrochloric acids found in volcanoes and mammals stomachs. Also, sold in most local home improvement stores. You need to add oil to the surface of the metal to prevent it from flash rusting.
