    The best hotels have lights on the two sides of the mirror in the bathroom instead of above it. That's the clue. And to one up it, diffuse it. So take your diffused new lights and mount them as large stand up panels on the two sides of your face, roughly making a 90° angle between the two light panels with your face as the focal point. The advantage of the LED panels will be of course, no large umbrellas.

    In 2013 I was involved with a venue that had overhead F96T12 instant start (8-foot) single pin fluorescents and all were the "CW" type with 65 CRI and it was a place I took a lot of pictures of people at the venue. I spent about $150 and relamped all the fixtures with the 87 CRI "CWX" variety in the 58x100 ft. space and it saved me 15 to 20 seconds of color balance twiddling per photo, which saved me hours of time and greatly improved all photos taken in there, even ones where people used their phones. It eliminated the awful yellow-green tint and the $150 was well worth it for all the time it saved and it greatly improved the looks of the place.

      3Cr15w311 wow, I can relate! There are so many places with absolutely no consideration for the light quality, and it's even worse if they have a mix of five or so different types of light. Sometimes you can't even pull colors out of a photo in post because the lights at the venue don't output enough light in that part of the spectrum! I still see some lights at the store with CRI

      @@JeffGeerling This place was a ministry and Christian concert venue and the lights were from a Fred's store that opened there in 1973. Still, I was amazed that I could make that much improvement for $150 by going from 65 CRI F96T12CW to 87 CRI F96T12CWX in the fixtures.

    Replaced my closet lights with 1x4 version. It's so much nicer than the crap florescent tube light it had before. I agree, the install is pretty annoying though.

      I completely forgot that! They're Feit Electric FP2x4 panels, I bought them for a little over $100 each; see www.feit.com/product/4500-lumen-flat-panel-light-fixture/ for details. I wish they made a higher CRI version.

    Hey Jeff, thanks for this video. I am building a home based office and stuido (that is also a gym space ). I create fitness based content and on camera, talking head type videos. I am trying to figure out the best lighting design and curious if you were to start over, what you'd install. Are you happy with these larger foot print lights?

      If I were designing my office again from scratch (which I may have the opportunity to do someday if I build out more of my basement!), I would probably have dimmable 'can' lights (but warm LEDs) for general task lighting, and make sure they can provide lighting on the walls behind me, and also spaced out around the room.
      Then I would put in a track for track lighting about 3-5' in front of the position I'll use for video (I would probably put in two tracks on each side of the room), and that way I could position different track-style lights in different places as needed.
      Finally, I would ideally have a few outlets around the room at standing-desk height so I could plug things in without a mess of cables under my desk and on the floor, especially things I may temporarily or permanently mount on a wall.

    Jeff, I'm interested in the software suite you use to do your videos. I've paused on your Desktop scenes, but there's a lot of app icons that I don't know the name of.

      Day to day I do most of my work via macOS Mail, Safari, Sublime Text 3, Terminal, and Slack. Some of the other apps I use with some frequency are macOS Photos, Calendar, and Notes, then Adobe Photoshop, and for comms LimeChat, Slack, and Tweetbot. For news/RSS I use Reeder. That's about it. Anything else is in CLI/Terminal (like Docker usage, Ansible, that kind of stuff).

    Safety first! Very funny!
    Use a licensed electrician - It’s mandatory in the land of OZ.

    • @JeffGeerling
      @JeffGeerling  4 года назад

      In Missouri, most electrical changes may be made without a licensed electrician, even those that require a permit (changing a light fixture does not); as long as you follow the code and get a permit + inspection when required, you’re golden. Now, if you don’t know what you’re doing when it comes to sparky bits, then yes you really should have an electrician do it!

    Jeff, What model monitor stand is that in your video?

    • @JeffGeerling
      @JeffGeerling  4 года назад

      It's a Vivo dual-monitor stand, but I'm just using it for one monitor: amzn.to/32VvLCt - it fits my 27" display quite well, and I can use clamp mount adapters to pop on some other accessories too. It's been rock solid for five years now.
