I tend to favor Xavier over Erik is because, fundamentally not all mutants are equal. Some have the ability to control minds, topple buildings and raze cities and some are just toads or blobs or jubilees. Its important to realize that being descended from a common ancestor doesn't make you the same species. Mutants aren't a collective. If Magneto is successful and creates a world of only mutants, the pre-existing differences will start to become more obvious and it would lead to discrimination among mutantkind. Humans are more equal than mutants and yet they still have wars, poverty and suffering. No one can ever truly get rid prejudice, so why not try to coexist.

@@ladyday8576 Magneto has been shown multiple times willing to sacrifice mutants for his grand purpose. If a mutant can be used as a pawn, Magneto will use them regardless of their safety. Honestly, there is no difference between humans and mutants.
Being a human or a mutant does not make you a good person or a bad one or even an evil one. They all are just people with different lifes, past, experiences.
Having some extra powers is just an additional edge in this whole mess of a world of struggle and survival.
Plus all the envy comes to play, idk how about you all folks, but i'll be feeling envious if i knew that there are people who can bend physic laws by sheer fact of existing.
It's easier to call people with X gene as somethinb but a human, because calling them human leads to a lot of frustration not everyone can handle. In a different but similiar, albeit if much darker sense this is why mass murderers, tyrants and just batshit crazy people are often called "monsters" or "abominations", because accepting that *that* is a part of humanity and by proxy - natural is no fun to say the least.
But, that is what i *think* is right and it is. What i would actually do may (not) have anything to do with the previous. Afterall... when it all comes down to the core of everything - there is no rules, only power. Never strike first, but always have power and means to defend yourself.
So in the end... i think i would not truly care about either position. They both are wrong and right at the same time. Besides, time will wage ruin to their ideals even if they managed to install and uphold them. Xavier is all about justice - protect the innocent and not so innocent from themselves or otherwise, where Erik is all about vengeance - to punish the vile and wicked and... those on his path. The charm of such characters as Apocalypse or Mr. Sinister is too appealing to me, not what they do but what they are in a nutshell - individualists, i don't share their evil intentions, but i do acknowledge them wanting to be independent... essentially to be safe.
      *tl;dr:*
      Erik ftw.
ps: would be interesting to see how things ended up going if Magneto and Charles had swapped life but were the same people.

Charles is a fool who thinks passivity will lead to change and Magneto is a hypocrite who thinks genocide is acceptable if he’s doing it.
They’re both wrong. That’s how storytelling works. Each of them have a piece of the puzzle, but their refusal to comprise has doomed their goals both.
Charles has the level head to recognize ordinary people have innate value as more than expendable stepping stones. Magneto has the experience to understand tangible bold actions are required to enact real change. They could’ve made progress a long time ago. Tragically, their worldviews and experiences have given each of them half of the answer at the expense of the other. Charles lived a coddled life of privilege where matters of mind are literally all that matter, and Magneto lived a life of atrocity where matters of force are literally all that matter. It even displays itself in their mutant ability. They each control what they value most. Charles can change people’s minds and Magneto can bend the world to his will. Not recognizing that both must be put into use as a unified effort to create a lasting difference.

This debate between Charles and Erik is framed by them living in the USA. The land where politicians need private sponsors due to an out of control voting arms race, education is more likely to be lacking or biased, and money talks a lot more due to the cultural over-emphasis on capitalism (sometimes to the detriment of society).
Charles is, I believe, in the right. However he is nowhere near proactive enough to ensure his goal. He needs to be running positive pr campaigns, pander more to the general public, bri- I mean lobby with large sums of money to convince both political parties to not bury him under rhetoric and their own pandering, get that money by swaying key financial supporters and capitalize more on the heroics of the X-men.
Do the right thing and it'll all turn out fine isn't enough in the USA. If the X-men were housed in Germany as an example, they wouldn't be accepted outright but Charles' idea of leading by peaceful example would work far better because of the political climate.

The reason I hate and refuse to acknowledge the parallels between the Dr. King to Professor X and Magneto to Malcolm X is this: They grossly misunderstand the philosophies integral to the work that both real life men did.
Prof. X didn't block traffic. King did. Prof. X didn't engage in political debate. King did. Prof. X didn't protest mutant (black) discrimination. King did. Prof. X took no active role in fighting for mutant liberation. He built a school, took no political stances, engaged in no civil disobedience and hoped that humans would love mutants if mutants kept saving them. Dr. King was peaceful, not passive. Prof. X is passive.
Malcolm X believed in power and establishing and maintaining black folks right to self defense. Magneto is a domestic terrorist who often openly fights for mutant superiority. Not equality. Superiority.
That comparison and others like it are another case of white creators deeply misunderstanding our stories and political views while trying to write them on our behalf. I don't give a fuck what Stan Lee said in 63. Those characters are not based on Malcolm or Martin. They literally can't be.

determined di_myoor A closer resemblance to Malcolm X and Martin Luther King’s ideologies and actions would make a far better, more interesting and inspiring story imo- especially if they started in the positions they occupy in some of the better films. I would love to see, for example, Xavier and Magneto working alongside one another while still being critical of one another. A great story would be one that makes things better for mutants, but not entirely so, much like their real life activist forefathers progressed things for black Americans but didn’t Fix Racism Forever. I would adore to see that kind of nuance in an X-Men comic or movie, and I don’t think I’d be alone in that. If it was, it would be best if several writers from harshly oppressed minorities wrote it, particularly black and lgbt writers.

    • @AlyssMa7rin

They are both embodiments of the extreme ideas of both individuals. MLK was a radical pacifist (and the reason that the civil rights movement actually succeeded), whereas Malcolm X was the reason people viewed it with animosity, his extreme ideology making several people fearful of those the Civil Rights Movement sought to protect. It's not about *what* they did, but how/why the did it. Prof. X was a pacifist because he feared that taking the violent approach would turn humanity, he thought that by trying to simply co-exist it would work out
Magneto believed it would never do so, and that 'equality' (supremacy in reality) could only be achieved through force.

The greatest issue I have with Charles and Magneto's ideologies is that they, by there very nature, always end up isolating mutant kind from humanity; Charles because he wants to teach them how to use their powers (which is a noble goal) and Magneto because he wants to protect them from the wrath of those who hate them (also a noble goal).
However, because of this, no emphasis is placed on integration, on bridging the gap between mutant and human until they are one and the same- and that, I think, is the biggest flaw in both their beliefs. They have differing views on how mutants should interact with humanity (peaceful dialogue vs violent action), but both agree that mutant-kind is separate from mankind, which ultimately forces them into a stalemate because neither is addressing the real issue at hand: There is no mutant-kind, just mankind. Because, regardless of whether they have weird powers or not, they are still human, still a person with thoughts and feelings, hopes and dreams, loves and losses. And powers, no matter how special or dangerous they may be, don't change that.

    Great video Sage.
I have to favor Professor X. If you aren't helping, you're making things worse. I believe a calm answer turns away wrath. But, I can't deny that peaceful resolutions don't always resolve. Sometimes the hurt is too deep to conceptualize. I don't think there is a solution in either of their ideals sadly. In fighting back you further alienate the other, increasing negative reputation. On the other hand, kindness creates an opening for manipulation, and perversion in favor of personal gain at the expense of others. The damage that has been done has been done, and remedying that on a grand scale would take too long to bring both gazes to eye-level. You have two perspectives looking in opposite directions. How can you ever see one another if you do that?
Great video, really encourages a moral dialogue on who is more right. I don't think humanity can ever come to this conclusion on their own. As long as people disagree and are willing to destroy each other over that disagreement, people will never come to understand one another....

On the one hand, Magneto is right. Often, violence is the only way to end injustice when one party benefits from the injustice. Examples: the American revolution and the French revolution. Often, accommodationalism just sends the message to the oppressors that they can keep doing whatever they want without consequences. The other colonies (Canada, Australia, et al) were able to get better treatment from the crown peacefully because America was violent in its demands.
But as some of Xavier's followers have pointed out to Magneto, if Magneto is successful on a global scale, then all he will accomplish is to reverse the roles of oppressor and the oppressed. His way will not actually reduce the injustice, just reverse its direction (that's the same flaw with Killmonger in the Black Panther movie).
Xavier's solution may be flawed and naive and may even fail, but at least his solution has the potential to directly address the injustice itself.

Xavier is more right than Magneto. This is mostly due to the fact that over time, you can improve people's minds, and bring about tolerance and coexistence. While there will always be bigots of one stripe or another, you can build communities wherein those old hatreds are revealed to be pointless and self-defeating.
A key example in reality is how many people in modern day America don't really blink an eye at working, being friends with, or having romantic relations with those who are racially different. Sadly not to the extent that no one cares about such differences, but such barriers are slowly being eroded over time.
A key example in pop culture is in X-men Apocalypse, in how the teenagers from Xavier's school go to the mall in the US, and the worst harm they receive is Nightcrawler getting brain freeze from a smoothie. Due to Xavier's efforts, there is a solid community there who don't care about mutants being in the same area as them. I think this is solid proof that Xavier's efforts are building a better world.

Personally, I believe that both Xavier and Erik have the correct philosophies and neither of them are entirely wrong (to an extent).
Charles is indeed correct about the fact that with patience, respect, selfless services and equality between both humans and mutants is the “right” way of doing things as it is a calmer way of handling the mutant discrimination. However, his greatest weakness lies in his ability to take that first step forward (joke intended) to actually try and make it happen by taking action and reinforcing his conviction and dream of building a unified way of life between both mutants and humans because at the end of the day, words are just empty sounds if you cannot back it up with conviction and desire to make it happen.
Erik, on the other hand, is also correct in his beliefs that mutants shouldn’t submit themselves to being slaves of inhuman treatment and behavior such as experimentation and discrimination. However, his greatest weakness lies in his approach of handling this bridge between humans and mutants because his actions has only filled the bridge with nothing but hate, fear, resentment and vengeance. If Erik was able to see humans and mutants as the same people living in the same world together while taking action to connect them together the right way without going down a destructive path, he would have become a better man that Charles had always seen him to be.
At the end of the day, Charles and Erik are both right and wrong. They both have the same noble and pure heart, but one is too pacifistic and lacked the heart to take action to unify the two worlds while the other is unable to see that not every human is evil and lacked the ability to reason with his actions. If Charles had the heart to fight for what he believed in and if Erik had the ability to reason with his action and realize that not all humans are evil, perhaps the two of them will be able to truly join hands.

Out there among the Marvel stars, millions of different species of all shape, sizes, and yes powers coexist and collaborate. There are problems like anything else, but as far as differences go they all just treat each other as people. Out there, you chock up all the craziness to "just another day in the galaxy, always full of surprises"

You could also compare this to pain and Madara and saskue and obits in Naruto. Humans cannot understand one another unless they face similar pain. We rarely think in this way, which is why hatred exists. If you are reading this, I urge you to try to look at the point of view of other people, to see why they took the actions that they did. However, you cannot change others ideals to match yours which is the blessing and curse of today. If everyone thought alike, there wouldn't be any advances in life, and we wouldn't become better. However, racists and other unsightly thoughts cannot be changed unless that person is done away with, which is what saskue was talking about when he wanted revolution and what madara and obits wanted in the dream world

I agree, Nagato was the most rational one of the Naruto villansm and his Philosophy is a realistic middle ground between Professor X and Magneto. Madara and Obitos plan of a dream world is nothing more but escaping reality and erradicate it for the sake of a mass Illusion everyone lives as a dream. Where nothing and no one is real. Sure it would do the trick but is nothing but a lie afterall. And Sasuke well, Sasuke was an emo kid that lost his parents , sought revenge most of his life. Was corrupted and changed later down the road. Wanted revenge again against another target until way later where he finally got some sense knocked into him by Naruto.

Realistically speaking magneto is correct even though his fight fire with fire philosophy is the wrong way to go about it the "equality is taken through force" rings true. Humans as a whole aren't gonna accept mutants, people genuinely fear other groups of people who's race, religion, cultural background is different from theirs which is dumb but the fear that humans have for mutants are understandable, mutants like Jean, Charles storm and cyclops can do so serious damge if they wanted to so it's easy for people to spread fear mongering propaganda about mutants.

    Great video man
I think the solution to the problem should be
    1. Let both humans and mutants realize the cruel things they did for each other. May be they could create empathy for each other and forgive each other for that.
    2. If 1st one doesn't work then ,like most people here saying, isolate them from each other. And then slowly find solutions to all their issues. But here the problem, though not that big, is who has the authority to isolate them as you can see in X-men universe that some mutants work in government too.
    3. If both of the above ones don't work then the ultimate solution
    --- ENLIGHTEN THEM
I'm sure they will find peace😊
There may be some other solutions but these are the ones that instantly came in my mind.
I didn't gave that much of a thought to it.

I love X-Men. While Xavier and Magneto are not perfect, I think the actual flaw here is that comics need status quo and thus neither can ever truly achieve their goals. In any other fictional media with an ending, Xavier COULD establish a world where humans began to trust mutants and there was lasting peace. But we know this peace cannot happen because comics prefer status quo and the status quo at Marvel is for mutants to be hated and feared. This also means that Magneto cannot ever achieve any truly lasting results either, because Genosha unfortunately wasn't a permanent solution in this status quo comic world. Both of them are destined to constantly fail. Not because it's impossible to succeed, but simply because it's impossible in a comic media where status quo rules and Marvel will never allow mutants to have lasting freedom or happiness.

I think I lean more towards Magneto's way of thinking, of course there's merit to both approaches. Looking back on history, everyone remembers the great things Martin Luther King said...but not the same level of respect is given to Malcolm X. Not many people are willing to admit that civil rights was fought for using both ideologies. It's not enough to say nice words and ask nicely to be treated as equals, sometimes you have to be aggressive and demand your rightful place at the table.
The same thing happened with women's suffrage. It was through the extreme actions of the suffragettes that caught people's attention and pushed the conversation forward. Where the polite, women who asked nicely for their right to vote went ignored.
The LGBTQ movement only started to make great strides after the Stonewall riots happened. Yes, peace is always preferable but you need to agitate in order for your voices to be heard.

I think neither person is completely right or wrong. While Professor X is right in the sense that peace should be achieved between humans and mutants it definitely will not happen overnight and humans by nature are judgemental so maybe to a certain degree yes peace can be obtained with compassionate, sympathetic humans but there will be always be people who fear what they don't understand. Magneto has every reason to feel rage towards humanity and the need to fight fire with fire is understandable but it will just confirm the fears people have towards mutants. I've never watched/read much of X men but it looks interesting

The problem with the whole X-Men philosophy is we have to choose between either extreme pacifism and and extreme machiavellianism, not to mention that the connection between those characters and the great activists you mentioned don't exist at all,Dr.King wasn't impractical in his approach to the black/white problem,he led protests,debates...etc.
Meanwhile,Malcom X believed in self-defense and not in race-superiority,that's why he was killed by racist blacks who fought racism with racism (under the eyes of white police officers of course).
In fact,Malcom X opposed the core ideology of Nation of Islam and fought his own kind when he actually discovered that difference between the true islamic ideology and nation of islam ideology after his pilgrimage.

  • @alexman378
    @alexman378 7 лет назад +6

I would say that while Charles’ view is more noble, Magneto is right. It’s just nature. Any civilization that met another with directly contrasting ideologies, could not coexist. Magneto does preach genocide pretty much, but in self defense of his kind. Because if they tolerate humans, eventually someone will find the way to kill them off. In the movies they showed that with Logan, showing what too much tolerance gives you. In real life, we see it in countries like Germany, or Sweden, who are slowly exterminated by Muslims, through births. The natives are held back by the leadership who gives out free passes as women and children are being gang raped, but anyone who retaliated goes to prison. Historically, you can see this everywhere. So, as much as I like the X-Men and respect Charles’ convictions and hopes, I would probably join Magneto as a mutant. I’m not self hating in that I’d say “let humanity die off”, I’m just saying, when it comes to mutants, if they were real and wanted to survive, Magneto’s logic would prevail. If not, eventually they’d be wiped out. Humans rose to the top of the food chain because we were better at killing things than they were at killing us. There’s no logic in saying that wouldn’t happen again if something metahuman came about and threatened human superiority.

They're both right and wrong at the same time. Charles is right in that peace provides a better dialogue for humans and mutants, but he's too reluctant to act against existential threats to mutants. Erik is right in that there are humans who would exterminate mutants at the first chance they get, but he's too headstrong to see the humans on his side. It has to be both peaceful dialogue and a physical force response to direct threats

I think Magneto is right because although there are so many mutants that help people, such as X-Men, and at one point, even Magneto and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, there are no humans to side with the mutants; some hate them, some are indifferent. Plus, Magneto is a Holocaust survivor, an event in which some people tortured and killed other people just because they were different. I wish Charles was right (even Magneto said that), but unfortunately he's not. As Magneto told Charles in X-Men Evolution "You're idealistic, I'm realistic".

Magneto in his quest has forgotten that Mutants are in fact human. They laugh, they cry, they have irrational fears and hates. Humans, with our without mutants, will begin to categorize other humans into slots of being "lesser" and will be the mutants with minor abilities.
Professor X however is blinded by his hope. Hope that things will be better. The through dedication and hard work those that hate against all reason can be logiced into giving up their irrationality.
Equality is not given, but it can not be taken either. It is a constant struggle against the human instincts to fear what we see as different and to hold onto old teachings from our families, peers, cultures, and society about what is right and wrong and what people are. Both of these men have the tools to get to their goals but their own biases and fixed beliefs will forever prevent them from being able to collaborate.

I feel that peace as a concept is inherently inhuman. When we really think about it all of our morality varies from person to person. Sometimes (if not always) those different ideals create conflict. To me the only way a socitey functions correctly is if all the people part of it uphold the same values in unicen, lest we stray toward the path of conflict. So in my mind the only way to end the conflict is to separate both sides into their own respective communities vowing never to interact with each other. Although unlike most people who think this way I feel that both sides should have a safe zone to interact with each other should they feel the need to do. I feel this not only would work well in the X-Men universe but in real life as well. Too many wars, too much conflict. The world would be a better place if we could all just get along, but the truth is I don't see that as possible.

The Bat Who Laughs :D But where there is animosity there is also kinship. You speak of individual ideals in that they don’t compact, thus creating conflict - but what of the ideals that do? You can’t force an entire people into isolation by that logic. Thought is an ambiguous thing.

      @kingsada7246 7 лет назад +2

I wasn't really suggesting forced segregation, more so optional separation. Let like minded individuals live amongst themselves and the rest of the world smart enough to accept everyone live amongst each other. Extreme idealists have no place in modern day society and are mostly the root cause of conflict. It's why we see the rise of groups like Isis in an age where we like to think we're past such primitive idealism. Conflict is never ending, war on the other hand is mostly preventable despite what history would like you to believe.

Even if they were to become separate however, I find it a likely possibility that War could ensue given Humanities frantic disposition towards Mutants. Because of initially present power differences between Mutants and Humans whilst they were amongst our society, the Culmination of every Mutant in their own society only Increases this Power difference, leaving Humanity feeling Vulnerable and defenseless, which makes them Frantic and restless. Weapons are built "Just in case" but Mutants progress alongside them. As long as their powers remain so disproportional, Someone will try to end their progress. Being indeterminate, and Unregulated, I believe Humanity will inevitably strike against Mutants, Unless they're separated Entirely.

If Lee wrote this thinking in terms of civil rights movement Malcom X is getting an unfair wrap here. Malcom X did speak in militant terms but it was along defensive lines. If you screw with us we will fight back. His hostile rhetoric was a parallel response to what he receiving, Magneto goes far beyond that.

Both of them are Correct and Wring at the same time. That is what I believe. Charles believe in right ways results to peace, Eric believe that through force and Suffering peace will be for the Mutants.
I just believe that use both Ideology and come with one result. And that is They have there own land yhere own natuon there own laws that are still within reach of humanity but with protection and Civilize society for the mutant. If Humans cause any harm they will defend there own. Let the human be stubborn that will never change just protect your own away from the dicrimating humans and welcome those who respect there kind.

I think there both correct magneto is right mutants and humans cant live peacefully but charles is right that if you do good things for those who hate you might see you as a normal person.

While I sympathize with Charles, I think Erik is right despite his flaws.
He needs to let go of his bitterness, which is what he does is X-men Apocalypse ( I love that movie, fight me.)
One of the reasons Id dislike floating timelines is it negates the characters' growth.
The best thing would be to have Charles and Erik work together. Charles is their ambassador, and Erik rules Genosha as a mutant ethno-kingdom where they can live in peace with their own, military, Nobles, and Guild system.

One of the best parts of the Xmen mythos... AND THERE ARE MANY... may be the fact that most of the mutant characters are NON-POLITICAL. I'm not saying thats a good thing... but its realistic and makes the world far more complicated. Xavier has his political world view... Magneto has his opposing... some others mutants do, and frankly a lot of others really DGaF. They deal w the world as it is and try to grab their piece for their reasons: e.g. Shaw/Sinister

They are like 2 sides of the same coin.
Charles has the gift to read minds and telepathy, magneto only his magnetic skill.
Charles is superior because he knows what everyone is thinking and it is possible to make the world one

I personally believe that Charles Xavier is the one who is right. The method he uses to fight for equality is the same method used by famous civil rights leaders throughout history such as Ghandi and Martin Luther King Jr..

Magneto was right. Equality is fought for, never handed out. The price for freedom is death.

Charles believes in mutant integration, pacifism, globalism, and equality with humans. Magneto believes in mutant segregation, extremism, nationalism and equity with humans.
Charles and the X-men fight cause they need to not cause they want to. Erik and the Brotherhood fight because they want to not cause they need to.

Well my ideology is not fully satisfied with either of them ......I just like to be in the middle of their ideologies...... You cannot satisfy everyone but the one you can is yourself I believe .......and I think peace is for them who want it violece is for them who lacks peace ......what will stand Infront I don't know but surely say it can never satisfy everyone. ITACHI UCHIHA once said"people live their lives bound by what they accept as correct and true... that is how they define reality. But what does it mean to be correct or true? Merely vague concepts... their reality may all be an illusion."( Peace has its values where violence is present)

Living together in peace is all good and nice and people should never stop striving for Corporation with one another
but putting all of your faith in another is foolish people should never forget humans potential for violence and betrayal
People should never leave them themselves vulnerable you must have your own strength so if peace if not an option you have the strengthen to defend yourself and not be dependent on your oppressor for protection
