Honestly, the Saleen Mustangs of this generation are some of my favorites-I find the styling rather subtle, especially compared to what can be seen today with these "specialty" sorts of cars (for example, look at what Mansory or Hennessey or even Brabus will do to vehicles). I know those comparisons are in a somewhat different league from what Saleen does, but it's a similar concept. Now as for the depreciation/sales side of it, yes, since most people won't even know what the hell they're looking at it would be a very hard car to try and sell. If I were to buy one of these it would 100% be to drive, not to flip or sell in any way
Any true Mustang fan would know what that car is. You had too many people who don't know what they are looking at. I wanted one back in the day when they came out but couldn't afford it at that time.
Sold mine within the week and i was asking around what it was worth. Had a lot of people interested and most knew what it was. It was one of the fastest selling cars i have ever sold. If marketplace will not let you put the full price in, change the make and model to other and type in what it is and you can put whatever price you want while keeping it under the cars category. This will probably not work if you list it as a dealer.
I guarantee you that every single person that has low-balled you and acted like they don't know what a Saleen is, would turn around and try to flip it for more than you're asking because it's sUpEr RaRe!!!!!!1!!!!!!1!111!!!!
Is the Craigslist sixty percent still a thing? For cars under $5000 it's private party market in Southern California. I'm going slow on shopping for a replacement for my 2001 Ford Expedition. It looks like you know what but it still runs then I pray for $2,000 it's utterly ridiculous how car and housing prices have gone up all this fake money is driving up the cost of living! I enjoy your videos I learn something new every week thanks Craig
I have financed three Saleen Mustang ‘s. My first one, an 89 fox body was through Wells Fargo. My second one, an 02 N/A was through a credit union. My third one, a 2007 extreme was also through a credit union. I simply used the NADA guide To show cost and value as well as a letter/ phone call to/from Saleen verifying that it was a Saleen Mustang. SALEEN can verify their cars by the vin, even though the vin reading shows whatever model mustang they used to build the SALEEN. It is a little bit of a pain because it’s not necessarily straightforward on financing as well as insurance. If you know what the vehicles are they are well worth it. You can also advertise on the marketplace by putting in the description what you actually want to charge for the vehicle, at least that’s what I’ve seen people do. You could also advertise these vehicles, I’m assuming Rauch as well on the SALEEN forums and SALEEN Facebook pages. It’s amazing how fast these cars get scooped up. Hope this helps and whoever purchased it will probably be pretty happy.
2 words...niche market. Owned a 2003 Jack Roush Classic, #35 of 50 built. Talk about a depreciating asset. Went in to buy a Terminator, should've stuck to my guns and bought the Termi instead. An instant classic nowadays; "specialty" cars, not so much. Too much cloning going on doesn't help resale either. Never again.
I think part of it is the underlying engine, a 4.6L variable cam Triton, is known to be a money pit. Chain guides that break, tensioner gaskets that blow out, VCTs that stick, phasers that fail from a lack of oil pressure, lifters and roller followers that required an update from Ford, 2 piece spark plugs that break in the head, and an oil pump that leaks from the aluminum backplate at high speeds. The oil channels, particularly on the camshaft, are exceptionally small, so these engines absolutely require a perfect service history. I put my kids through college on this engine, and I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy.
@@artisanrs The 4.6 suffers from all of these problems just like the 5.4. I didn't even mention the exhaust manifold gaskets. I've repaired hundreds of them. Maybe you are thinking of the 2 valve Tritons which are phenomenal engines.
These 3 valve motors will go well over a hundred and fifty thousand miles with regular and correct oil changes , their main problem is being owned by teenagers . If teenagers loved four door grocery getters they would have a bad rap also .
@@guynoir4733 And the 2 valve motors will go 250,000 with below average maintenance. I'd just go with a chevy, prior to AFM, or even better a toyota if you are looking at the F150. The later generation trucks with the 3 valve did correct some of the problems, but these engines can be pretty tough to work on. That's why most shops just pull the engine and replace it.
To help you out some. There may only be 3 2008 S281s for sale currently, but there are plenty of 05-08s for sale. The #22 doesn’t mean the car was the 22nd car made that year. Saleen doesn’t build them in sequence. Also cars numbers 1-10 are used internally for press/media, demos, family and friends. Not all numbers are used either. You can order a new window sticker and a Letter of Authenticity from Saleen on their website. The car you have had an aftermarket non Saleen hood on it. Saleen also did suspension changes including springs, sway bars, shocks/struts. Supercharged models also received larger front brakes with StopTech front calipers and rotors. The seats have custom covers and front has custom headrests. The wheels should be silver or chrome and have been refinished.

The GT 500, and Terminator cars are way more plentiful than cars like that Saleen. I can find several of the fist two aforementioned cars even today, unlike the Saleen.
@@erikturner5073 they made more of those cars but those cars also have far more potential. It's not even close. They have much better driveline whereas the Saleen is a mustang gt with a blower. (Driveline wise)
My saleen sc was a killer car. Stored it every winter. Took forever to sell it. Had 21 k miles on it. Cherry car. I miss it. Top speed I hit was 165mph.
I am a lifetime car guy (67 years young). I have done it all and you just gave me a new education !!. You did not talk about what a customer will probably have to do to insure the Saleen. You can't walk into an Allstate office, because all they look at is the vin. I bet you have to have a custom insurance policy to cover the damn thing, too !
So happy you cleared that up because as a owner of one of these fine machines , I was wondering from the title of this video what is he talking about. I do remember when I was searching for my 06 in 2009 it was listed as a GT. I thought that was so strange although I knew what I was looking for and wanted. Now that I think about it I did finance half the price of the car which maybe why I didn't have a problem getting it. Good Video.

I have always dreamed of having a Saleen Mustang since the sN95 mustang era. Didn’t really car for the fox body spleens but know they’re something special
True....However, every legitimate Saleen.. is registered in the Saleen registry based on the ford/mfg VIN. If you find a questionable "Saleen" you can call them (with the VIN) and discover who was the buyer/original owner, what is the actual Saleen Number (which corresponds with a listed Saleen ID), also, any special part, or configuration details which it came equipped with. every original Saleen also came with a Saleen jacket. Might try to see if the jacket can be thrown in with the sale? Lots of Trivia is out there - if you want to authenticate the car.

I cannot imagine dealing with the kinds of buyers looking at Mustangs at Buy Here Pay Here lots... Here comes Johnny Nocredit... “Aww dood awww doooood! How much? Awww doood! Nah man, no credit... You can finance, right?” (Turns out, the guy has garnished wages, hasnt held a job longer than six weeks, and a credit rating in the low 400s - but he needs that Mustang, man!)
Thanks for the insight Craig! Hennessey has built a RAM TRX SUV!! Yeah 7 seater! w/ 1000hp. But similar concept, you buy it for 2x retail you can’t ever sell it for what it’s truly worth! 👏🏼👏🏼
Why you wouldn’t buy one again, is the exact reason people buy them lol. Rare and they buy it for them. Not so someone down the street knows what they’re driving.
The title,is misleading. It should be What I learned about selling high value, rare vehicles. The title implies issues with Salween, they’re great, just a poor, fit, for a roadside dealer.
A lot of love and care went into Saleen models. They are very fun... If you want something different, and unique grab one. :D Time only brings more love to special cars like these. They are fun but the people that didnt know that will eventually. :D
It's not a Mustang anymore with all badges & upgrades it's a Saleen & Rare People always trying to get over & lowball That's like if Graig put a Lamborghini on his lot will stick out like sore thumb good video
The Facebook issue pisses me off. Since when did Facebook become an expert on vehicle values ? Had the same issue with a Mercedes CLK63 AMG Cabrio. Marketplace thought it was just a regular CLK.
Awesome video and insight as to how to handle specialty vehicles. A lot of good content and education to be had if people would learn to listen instead of running their keyboards.😂
Had the same problem trading off my 18 Roush. Was 6k upside down n the dealer split the difference so I could get a 20 Gt 350. My 17 gt 350 held its value when I traded for the Roush in 18.
One year my local ford dealers had more than 20 of these out front. The only one i liked was a plain white Racecraft version that had waaay less plastic crap bolted on.
Curious as to why there's such a struggle to list it correctly? I looked on Facebook Marketplace just a couple hours ago and found a black 2008 with 65,000 Saleen S281SC listed for 19,500. The problem with the S281SC is that realistically they just weren't popular then and they aren't now unless you specifically look for one. The Shelby that's been mentioned had the same amount of interior and exterior work but went one step further and dropped a 5.4 with forged internals and an Eaton blower. Between the 2, the Shelby will always be the more popular of the 2. When new, many people stayed away from Saleen products when the Shelby was offered because Steve Saleen and Saleen as a business had a lot of legal issues going on which turned people off, but also the Shelby had the SVT/Ford badge which gave the impression of a better warranty, better ease of service and still having a relatively exclusive vehicle that had the Carol Shelby pedigree. Not to mention, car enthusiasts knew from the start that the Saleen and Roush cars just had blowers stuck on top of an otherwise stock 4.6 3v...although they made very respectable power...they were at the upper end of what a stock 4.6's rods could handle.
This! The Shelby driveline is far superior with a way higher ceiling. Not just the engine but the tr6060 6 speed as well. The Saleen is a mustang gt driveline with a blower. They are very good looking cars that are unique and well balanced and super fun to drive but potential wise they don't compare to a Shelby. Hp isn't that far apart on them but the 3v is near maxed while the Shelby is just chilling at stock power it ain't even got started yet. They can do 600 to the wheels with just bolt ons on 93 and with a blower swap 800 wheel with a trans that can take the abuse. Far superior platform.
I know the feeling of frustrations. Last swap meet i sold things no longer needed. Everything was sold at a loss half price or near to. Reminds me of Walmart Hoppers they shop the clearance aisle and still want the item for less. Try a window banner Saleen rare 22 of 100, then the cheap shoppers will see the real value. I had a Nova SS had lot into it, the 08 tousling market crash I finally had to sell it at huge loss,, then the buyer asked what's my bottom dollar, that is
I cant believe i just heard someone say, i got to have a saleen for 8months and it was a loss, obviously not a mustang guy I get it but i love to try different cars and thats one of them
This is great info, I’m considering one, not super worried about resale so it’s good to know they are slow movers and I can take my time for the right one.
It’s fords fault Ford should have saved separate vin numbers for saleen and rousch mustangs I have a 2004 S281 speedster super charged Not planing to sell Always get great comments
If u put it on eBay it will be gone in 2 weeks for 25k, if it has the right mileage..It’s been molested with lambo doors brought back to stock with unpainted hinges, I’m a saleen buyer but I would never buy an early s197 saleen it’s the worst body style and engine combination, also anyone that put lambo doors on that car doesn’t know how to care for a saleen and taints it’s history, saleen buyers r very particular being that they r specialty cars and bring premium prices...
I have worked on numerous Saleen/Roush Mustangs and I will not ever buy one again. first and most importantly, NOBODY makes parts for them and NO parts for other mustangs will fit. Blocks and heads are different, cooling is different, the serpentine system is a nightmare. spent 9 months trying to find parts for the last Roush/Saleen I worked on. had to modify the block, heads, cooling system, and had to make a set of bolts as they do NOT make the bolts for sale. took 4 months to do! NEVER AGAIN!
Based on what you said Saleen should replace the VIN or something to allow the car to retain it's value in the Bluebook or something. I'm not a ford guy but that would be fun to rip for sure.
That is my favorite Saleen as well. I remember being 28 years old in 2000 and Fremont Ford had the best selection of Saleen Mustangs in the Bay Area. I still remember them having a 2000 white S281SC speedster. They looked so exotic with the Toneau Covers and the Saleen bar. The price was $51K. My credit wasn’t good enough to get me into that car.
One issue with how rare they are is everyone always puts replica kits on Mustangs, so I call them all "Faleens"; because even if they are real I just assume they are all fake lol.
I did my first car flip this week. Bought it for $600 put $250 into it and sold it for $1900. lots of work but im on my way .

I cannot imagine dealing with the kinds of buyers looking at Mustangs at Buy Here Pay Here lots... Here comes Johnny Nocredit... “Aww dood awww doooood! How much? Awww doood! Nah man, no credit... You can finance, right?” (Turns out, the guy has garnished wages, hasnt held a job longer than six weeks, and a credit rating in the low 400s - but he needs that Mustang, man!)
that Saleen would have more chance of selling on cars and bids
The 281 part would have stopped anyone who knows mustangs. No its not worth more, nobody wants the junk 4.6 when the 5.0 is available.
Thanks for the insight Craig! Hennessey has built a RAM TRX SUV!! Yeah 7 seater! w/ 1000hp. But similar concept, you buy it for 2x retail you can’t ever sell it for what it’s truly worth! 👏🏼👏🏼
Anyone who you have to explain to them that this is a saleen and not a regular GT is not the target audience for this car.
Back when this came out I was obsessed with it.
Word. And now that I make more money I’m thinking about getting one lol
Why you wouldn’t buy one again, is the exact reason people buy them lol. Rare and they buy it for them. Not so someone down the street knows what they’re driving.
ya your right I had a 2004 and a 2006 Saleen and they were very hard to sell
Craig please keep these videos coming. I love your honesty, and work ethic. You definitely give a great perspective on buying and selling cars.
The title,is misleading. It should be What I learned about selling high value, rare vehicles. The title implies issues with Salween, they’re great, just a poor, fit, for a roadside dealer.
I just love it when people say cash right now and then want to write you a check !
The 351 extreme Saleen was the best Saleen made
The 351 Extreme Saleen had problems passing smog in states with strict guidelines like California
A lot of love and care went into Saleen models. They are very fun... If you want something different, and unique grab one. :D Time only brings more love to special cars like these. They are fun but the people that didnt know that will eventually. :D
Harder to sell because the VIN shows 08 Mustang and they won’t loan on it as a Saleen. Went through the same thing with a Roush I had. PIA
Yes, that is what he said in the video.
@@mj_aussie_coaster_travels8310 I posted that in the middle of the video. Lol. Right before he mentioned that.
Local car shows on weekends with a For Sale sign will help some with cars like that
So this is why you don’t want my yenko 😂😂😜😜
I know you sold it, but JJ Best might have financed it. Cars like that are their bread and butter.
Man, I have a 2006 saleen mustang, and lemme tell ya, the amount of people that ask me "is that a real saleen" is craaaazzyyyy
I’d buy this in a heart beat if it was available still❤
Thank you for that I learned something
loving the camera quality
It's not a Mustang anymore with all badges & upgrades it's a Saleen & Rare People always trying to get over & lowball That's like if Graig put a Lamborghini on his lot will stick out like sore thumb good video
I love my 1 of 7 Saleen Mustang
It's looking beautiful
The Facebook issue pisses me off. Since when did Facebook become an expert on vehicle values ? Had the same issue with a Mercedes CLK63 AMG Cabrio. Marketplace thought it was just a regular CLK.
I thought Saleen was considered a manufacturer
Just a twelve-minute ad for your car for sale.
Awesome video and insight as to how to handle specialty vehicles. A lot of good content and education to be had if people would learn to listen instead of running their keyboards.😂
Bring it to Manheim, call it a day and ring the bell.
Had the same problem trading off my 18 Roush. Was 6k upside down n the dealer split the difference so I could get a 20 Gt 350. My 17 gt 350 held its value when I traded for the Roush in 18.
They made more Shelby but they still have a superior driveline and a far better platform to build on.
That car is worth probably even more! I'd hang on to it!
Me too I'd keep it lol
For $20k what a steal
I love this video! Super useful information that I wouldn’t have thought about!
I'm from New Zealand and know what a Saleen mustang is.
My fav is a all white Saleen , those cars are fancy!!
This one has great info and I’m sure it’s something you can apply to other similar limited models things to think about when our basing a car to flip
In my younger days love sport cars but like trucks
You would never think it being a Saleen having a problem selling it nice car
I just got a 2006 mustang saleen with only 4K miles
I know the feeling of frustrations.
Last swap meet i sold things no longer needed. Everything was sold at a loss half price or near to. Reminds me of Walmart Hoppers they shop the clearance aisle and still want the item for less.
Try a window banner Saleen rare 22 of 100, then the cheap shoppers will see the real value. I had a Nova SS had lot into it, the 08 tousling market crash I finally had to sell it at huge loss,, then the buyer asked what's my bottom dollar, that is
I cant believe i just heard someone say, i got to have a saleen for 8months and it was a loss, obviously not a mustang guy
I get it but i love to try different cars and thats one of them
these types of cars need to be sold on enthusiast forums. Sold a c5 heavily modified supercharged 2002 corvette for $36k on a fan forum
The Saleen mustang is for the older car guys who know SALEEN! I love Saleen's heck normal teens think they can afford them ohh hell no they cant!
Boomer
This is great info, I’m considering one, not super worried about resale so it’s good to know they are slow movers and I can take my time for the right one.
It’s fords fault
Ford should have saved separate vin numbers for saleen and rousch mustangs
I have a 2004 S281 speedster super charged
Not planing to sell
Always get great comments
I was working at a house today in a customer had the same car in the same color with the factory wheels so that brought me here
If u put it on eBay it will be gone in 2 weeks for 25k, if it has the right mileage..It’s been molested with lambo doors brought back to stock with unpainted hinges, I’m a saleen buyer but I would never buy an early s197 saleen it’s the worst body style and engine combination, also anyone that put lambo doors on that car doesn’t know how to care for a saleen and taints it’s history, saleen buyers r very particular being that they r specialty cars and bring premium prices...
Couldn't agree more about the doors as a owner of one.
Exactly to both
your best option would be to take it to an auction setting like mecum or Barrett-Jackson next time yes you do have to pay the fees but its worth it
I like the New Edge Saleens the best. Especially convertible speedsters.
Timing is everything
