I've been to Budapest, Hungary three times--in late winter 1988 (thru New Years 1989), autumn 1998, and summer 2015. I love Budapest. It's a great, moody, layered city. In 1998, I learned that the opposition party in Hungarian elections--whatever their political complexion--would run to the left of the ruling party on the economy and win and then implement the neoliberal program. I remember reading in the early 2010's that only 12% of Hungarians according to a Gallup poll believed the democratic transition after the fall of Stalinism was successful. The taxi driver who drove me in 2015 from the airport to my hotel in Budapest told me (with no solicitation on my part) that the problem with Hungarian politics was that it was all right-wing--there was no leftist alternative or option. And here we are in 2024.

Hungary in the last 10-12 years their current leader, Viktor Orbán, has established authoritarian rule & is one of the loudest leaders of resurging fascist/ethno-nationalism in the West. He's successfully demonised all types of minorities especially including LGBTQ+. All under the banner of "return to traditional values" etc etc. He's really suppressed a lot of rights for those people and is leading a hostile anti-immigrant (like, *ruthlessly* anti-immigrant) "trad white Europeans only" ethno-nationalist movement. So a lot of authoritarian-minded conservatives really admire what he's done & look up to him. And he's also achieved in his country what other conservatives in US & Europe want to achieve. Hence the diplomatic-level engagement with Hungary & Orbán, cause they wanna learn from eachother & form stronger links.

A lesbian who sounds like a guy and deals with constant suicidal thoughts and mental health issues because I knew as a kid I didn't want to be a man and didn't want my voice change, but trans kids weren't given puberty blockers in the 90's. Blockers would've saved my life and my voice, but I haven't been able to function since puberty. I was a good student, then my grades tanked when puberty started and I've never been able to hold a job. I hate this narrative that anyone who's AMAB who is remotely effeminate is a gay guy. Everyone assumed I was a gay guy, and it made me extremely homophobic. Ok? I dealt with Comphet my entire life. Because everyone assumed I gave a damn about men. Know why I wasn't chasing girls as a teen? Because I found the idea of being with women as a guy was disgusting. Who you go to bed as is just as important as who you go to bed with.

Its a form of 1) tactical diplomacy and 2) genuine admiration.
Hungary in the last 10-12 years their current leader, Viktor Orbán, has established authoritarian rule & is one of the loudest leaders of resurging fascist/ethno-nationalism in the West.
He's successfully demonised all types of minorities especially including LGBTQ+. All under the banner of "return to traditional values" etc etc. He's really suppressed a lot of rights for those people and is leading a hostile anti-immigrant (like, *ruthlessly* anti-immigrant) "trad white Europeans only" ethno-nationalist movement.
So a lot of authoritarian-minded conservatives really admire what he's done & look up to him. And he's also achieved in his country what other conservatives in US & Europe want to achieve. Hence the diplomatic-level engagement with Hungary & Orbán, cause they wanna learn from eachother & form stronger links.
Because it’s currently ruled by an extremely authoritarian, socially conservative autocrat.

Obviously, the moral of the story is: A vacation does not give one anywhere near a good picture of what life is really like in a place.

Dave, I'm not a gay man. I'm a lesbian. A lesbian who sounds like a guy and deals with constant suicidal thoughts and mental health issues because I knew as a kid I didn't want to be a man and didn't want my voice change, but trans kids weren't given puberty blockers in the 90's. Blockers would've saved my life and my voice, but I haven't been able to function since puberty. I was a good student, then my grades tanked when puberty started and I've never been able to hold a job.
I hate this narrative that anyone who's AMAB who is remotely effeminate is a gay guy. Everyone assumed I was a gay guy, and it made me extremely homophobic. Ok? I dealt with Comphet my entire life. Because everyone assumed I gave a damn about men. Know why I wasn't chasing girls as a teen? Because I found the idea of being with women as a guy was disgusting. Who you go to bed as is just as important as who you go to bed with.
