I understand why the Libertarian Party would want a former Republican President speaking at their convention. Gives them more eyeballs on their convention and I am sure in many peoples' eyes credibility.
I don't understand why Donald Trump and the Republicans would go along with this. There was nothing to be gained for them at all. If anything it makes them look weak going to another party's convention to try to win support.

Yeah people can say they owned him by booing him, but he was the president. They're political cosplayers who get mad if you say you'd vote for civil rights legislation and cheer if you say jetpacks are better than roads. People condemn him for despising the voting public, but if there was ever a room of people to despise this is the one. And Trump's only real redeeming quality is when he turns around and friendly fires the people who are pretty much ideologically aligned with him, usually in a hilarious way. Like getting all the people who work for him fired and imprisoned. Or saying Elon Musk begged him like a dog and posted the funniest picture of all time.
These people just want a different business daddy to lie to them a slightly different way.

I remember being taken in by some of the libertarians at uni and they were a little overconfident in the idea that they could defeat fascism by inviting fascists to speak, believing that *of course* educated people would lambast them, embarrass them and dispel the mistique.
This seems to be what they're trying to celebrate here, not completely without justification, but it was easier to believe in 2007 when we could suppose that fascism was only flourishing because it was underground, and exposing it to the light would cause it to burn up like all vampires but Wesley Snipes in Blade.
In the years since though, this is A LOT harder to believe, given how much airtime they've recieved and yet continued to grow.
There is some grain of truth to the previous idea but you also have to take the next radical step which supports the disruptive protest, willfull obstruction and even then you can pat yourself on the back for such a thorough breakdown only to realise you made the hydra stronger.
Sometimes ironically the denial of such speech as a competing force is the thing to do. You have to value your own speech and *mission* as an anti-fascist above the comforting aesthetics of liberal "debate".
There was a time when the neoliberal politically correct consensus was happy to allow fascism to fester in the broader population so long as it was never spoken in public forums and I think that lack of a desire to admit it exists and provide a counter to fascism is one of the reasons they have so little to offer now that the economy is turning on western democracies, and now the neo-liberals and neo-conservatives do little else but placate the fascists, accepting their worldview while wagging a finger.
I do feel like a *social* reckoning with racism in the 90s and 00s instead of relying on progress and imagining that fascists were antiquated vestiges of 20th century backwardness would have saved us so much headache now... In hindsight.
There was also middle-class leftist complacency in the belief that fascism could only ever come from corporations, the rich and the powerful. And so there apparently *was* no conceivable struggle to be fought within the unimpeachable working class... Which I think has always been mega patronising. Anyway that's all done now and here we are!
So I have some sympathy with the libertarians for always questioning this complacency even if their own fringes can be absolutely bonkers, and even when they're frequently sooo cringeworthy.
As a Libertarian the Libertarian Party is stupid.
