Thanks for reacting to this, Bill. This song really shows Tarja's vocal ability and the difference between her vocals and Marko's just fit the song perfectly. I love watching young Nightwish anyways. It's so much fun seeing how great they were then, and how much they have grown and changed (but still great) over the years.

Love this song, one of my favorite Tarja era songs. From the 5th album Once, song #6 (of 18) at this show, right after Phantom of the Opera. Since you asked, the next song was "Sleeping Sun"
End of an Era DVD is the 2005 Helsinki concert, last show on the Once album tour, think the tour was called "Once Upon a Tour"
Tuomas with a killer keyboard solo, orchestral strings played that section on the studio version.
Who tied my hands to the wheel? Odysseus tied his hands to the wheel when he had to pass near the isle of the sirens so he could hear them without being forced to follow.
More from this show to check out: "Wishmaster", "Nemo", and the show closer "Wish I Had An Angel"
If you want to see 'baby' Nightwish, check out the official video for "Sacrament of the Wilderness", goes back to 1998, Sami Vanska on bass.

I completely agree with your vision of the musical spectrum of bands. A great band has wonderfully composed songs that go hand in hand with their hits and that are not well-known, but are the pillars of their work, for being challenging, exploratory and talented. "The Siren" is one of them. I recommend "10th Man down", "Gethsemane", "The Siren and the deep dark ocean", "The Kingslayer", "Slaying the dreamer" all live in Buenos Aires 2018.
    Greetings from Argentina!

2005. Marjo runs his bass through Tech 21 Sans Amp direct. Sleeping Sun is next up. Marko is playing the role of Odysseus/Ulysses. Tied to the mast. The ears of his crew stuffed with wax and told do not untie him no matter how he pleads. Based on the epic of Homer.

Thanks for the info on his bass rig and the storyline. I thought that's what Tuomas had in mind. The Iliad set in Finland! 😂

This song really shows more of Tarja's range. We're used to that classical semi-operatic style, which she also does for a lot of this song, beautifully, but I really love that middle-eastern style vocalisation she did after Tuomas's organ solo. That's a sound I haven't heard from her outside this song, and it's both beautiful and eerie a... real hair raiser. I've heard Floor and Anette do this song too, and they do a good job,* but neither of them capture that particular sound.
*I happened across Anette's version recently and, considering she tends not to do that well on Tarja's songs, she is actually surprisingly rather good on this. She isn't a classical singer like Tarja and Floor, so she does her own thing with it... but she does it very well.

Very well said, my friend. Sometimes, the original recording or vocalist it's the song exactly how it was conceived and we place that version in our hearts so it's tough hearing someone else do it even if it's note for note perfect. I'm a Journey fan. To me, Steve Perry IS Journey. I hear cover versions of their songs that are great but just can't compare to the original. Even Steve's replacement does a great job but he just can't capture that magic if you know what I mean. Thank you, my friend! 🤘❤️🤘

Tuomas has read the Greek Mythology...and Odyssy. Marco ties his hands to the wheel so Sirens (Tarja) will not eat him (after the haunting call "come to me"). You got the point in the end...must tie oneself to the something when you call us to you ; )

I’ve subscribed. Great review. One thing. This isnt the OG. That was the Kitee 5 when Sammy was the bassist. He left abt 2000-01 and Marco joined. Thomas wanted a male singer and none of them could sing. Then became the Finnish 5 till Tarja leaves 2005. This is in fact from.2005. End of Era concert in Helsinki.

Great reaction. :) If you like songs with deep lyrics, as fan of japanese music, especially from movement called Visual Kei, I really want to recommend you some amazing songs, because there are many really deep songs what I love. I want to recommend you song "Blinding Hope" by my favourite band ever The Gazette, official music video, you can turn on english subs there, lyrics are mostly in japanese, so. I don't know if you're ok with really heavy music and metalcore, not whole song is heavy, but some parts are really heavy, and there are harsh vocals. This song was released in 2021 as message to their fans in those difficult times of covid, is about isolation and depression, but there always is hope. Second song is "Kowarere Iku Sekai" ("Broken World" in english) by band Girugämesh, you can find on RUclips official music video with fan made english subs, really good translation. This song was released in 2007 and is about how people are destroing other people and mother Earth, it squeezing my heart every time I'm listen to it, especially one very emotional screeming there, you can feel all of this pain... This is topic that more people should be aware of, I really want more people to listen to this song, maybe they will also feel what I feel when I'm listen to this song and will starting think even a little different about this world and other living beings, I hope so... If you can react to some random recommendations that probably no one else would recommend, then please. And about Visual Kei, it's movement as music, fashion and subculture, created in early 80s by band X Japan (in that time just X), it had some inspirations from western music like heavy metal, punk and glam metal, musicians were wearing makeup etc, and songs were often about difficult topics, because they wanted to show grey japanese society, where everyone on that time should be the same, tha being different and talking about your true feelings and what you really think is totally ok. At the beginning it was very popular and many people were going on Visual Kei bands concerts etc, but in 90s it started to ne more underground/niche, and it's still more like niche to these days, even if there are many subgenres of Visual Kei, many bands and they even have fans on whole world, it's still that "standard" person don't even know what Visual Kei is, even in Japan. Nowadays when reaction videos are such popular, many reactior who are reacting to heavy music are reacting to Visual Kei bands, because there are some really insane bands, so it started to be a little more popular again. And Visual Kei is like whole art, music, visuals, musicians are amazing, their visual side is part of that artistic performance, live shows are amazing, music videos too. And there are many rock and metal bands from many different subgenres, but you can find there almost everything, folk, jazz, electro etc, and bands love experiments with music and sounds, so you can find many different genres in discography of one band, often even in one song mixed perfectly together. I hope you will react to these two songs. ;)
