The waterproof Bic Secret

- Don't underestimate the electronic Bic, it is actually more waterproof than the standard wheel and flint Bic. Take part in the question about the best lighter!
In my experience and opinion the electronic lighter is not as robust and will break more often , but it is more waterproof.
You can blow in to the flint lighter a few times and it will work.
The best thing about the flint lighter is that even if you run out of fuel you can still use it to make a fire.
Tested. You are the trooper!
Couple of things:
1. You don't mention the difference in cost. I would have thought that this was something people might like to know.
2. The whole issue of waterproof is, to my mind, blown out of all proportion. If there is even the slightest possibility of the lighter getting wet, simply put it in a small Zip-loc bag! Problem goes away. Also, and as they are ridiculously cheap, get a budget pack of 3 (for less than 3 quid) and distribute them around your kit.
Also, one may consider a Jet lighter of some sort- this is nice because you can direct the hot jet of flame directionally and not get singed as happens with a Bic.
Some folk even use these new Mini-torch items, but of course they are much more expensive.
Thanks for the tip about the electronic Bic - my first introduction. I'll incorporate that in future.
I have washed many flint bics and found them at the bottom of the washer and they lit right up
Thank you!
Is a loi-uh the same thing as a lighter?
Asking for a friend.
Great tip! Thanks for sharing!!
yeah man especially if you are out on the river, you never know if you might get a dunking and then a lighter that still works is a plus
Good to know!
I love videos like this straight and to the point wish I would have seen this before I bought my exotac $15 fire sleeve
+JimmyGunXD556 do those covers work well?
Humble Trekker
yes . the fire sleeve is a nice second layer of protection and one nice feature about the fire sleeve is it floats. I personally do not rely on anything mechanical as I always fear it failing when you really need it. Though Bic has seemed to proven itself for sure in the outdoors and survival arena. Life would be so boring without or gadgets. lol I like Wet Fire and a Swedish Fire Steel for my gigs in the woods.
Wonderful tip, my friend!I always look forward to your vids.
as always I appreciate the support
Nice to know ... gonna get a few for bug out bags etc ! In emergencies/ rain etc. ... looks to be VERY dependable 👍
cheers mate
It's a fair point. Cold, rainy conditions are when you most need to light a fire and wet hands can make it very difficult to light a Bic. It's hard to dry your hands properly once they've soaked up water. Maybe carry one of each? Keep the piezo Bic as a back up so it doesn't wear out too fast.
2 is easy to carry
This is a GREAT tip .. I never knew that! .. I am NOT big on all these, flint striker, coconut hull, magnesium, titanium etc etc etc fire starters ...seems silly (never mind expensive) for the occasional back packer or camper., when a Bic lighter (that just about everyone already has) in a plastic bag will work better for starting a camp fire :) ...
BUT now I'm definitely adding a couple of the electric style ones, I usually cary two lighters on an over night camping trip, toss one in a cheap plastic bag in the bottom of the pack, another in a pocket ... but the added feature of wet lighting .. amazing and inexpensive, for the cost I'll bring one or two of each :)
electric BICS is are a bit mechanically unreliable in my experience. I wouldn't rely on it as my only fire starter. but as you say , so small and light why not add one
great tip thanks for the video
thanks bro!
great video brother
Satisfying
from personal (mainly indoor), experience, flint bics are pretty good at lighting first strike but are quite firm and I find the nature of the scraping goes straight through me. I like clippers personally. Light first strike in three goes or less usually! They are better than that new but I like hanging on to them for as long as possible. If I can, until the wheel is clogged with flint when I'll either scrape it clean or replace with one from a cheap disposable.
Was surprised by that particular quality of the electronic one. Generally dismiss them as cheating or being overly high tech and fragile :) Was expecting nothing at all or for you to get a little piezo shock. Played super nice for your video though. Click - flame. Info noted and appreciated.
To the debate stirring in the comments... When I have had a lighter submerged, it has been the modular nature of the clipper that has allowed me to get it running again soonish. Essentially stripping it to shake and dry each piece individually and to dry the grooves on the wheel. Once reassembled, I strike it and hold the lighter on. The spark is reduced so it takes a couple goes. Its best not try repeated quick strikes as that will move about any moisture left in it. Then once it catches I hold the lighter on to heat the wheel and drive off remaining moisture. Not really possible on a bic. Sometimes has taken a couple strip/ rebuild cycles. Submersion was briefish though, perhaps up to a half a minute. Glad to have that tip on the electro. My method is of limited practicality in the field. A dedicated clipper drying kit would be a bit of waste of carrying capacity! Much more practical and sensible to have a backup backup that is of a different nature.
"One is none, and two is one!" The age-old mantra still holds today. With the price and small size of lighters, simply carry 2 or 3 of them!
I 've also shown this on video. i 've used both and usually carry a wheel one, but i do carry an electric one during rainy season. electric ones are hard to ignite something that's not like a gas state.
Thanks for sharing. :D C.R.
yep I'm not the first to show this hack. agreed the wheel ones can still light cotton wool or something like that when the gas runs out
Thank you 😊
🔥
thanks for watching
So counterintuitive: I thought the electrical lighters shorted out in water! Maybe a piezoelectric lighter has the sparking mechanism safely down inside of it. Or maybe, unlike the very textured mechanical striker, the electronic parts are too flat to hold onto the water for very long.
great video David, this is something I did not know. Now, how would the electronic lighter hold up after an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) during a SHTF scenario? I'll be waiting for a video, thanks!
a simulated nuclear attack will be fine, no need for the real thing.
it would be fine, it is not actually electronic, it works by a spring loaded hammer hitting a piezo crystal, when the hammer hits the crystal it produces a spark as the force causes a voltage in the crystal that arcs between 2 metal contacts. The word electronic in this case is misleading. The whole mechanism is less bullet proof than the standard wheel type and more prone to breaking (IMHO), but it is more water proof!
i have no real evidence it is more likely to break it is just a gut feeling, the wheel type makes a bigger spark thar can be used to light tinder even if the gas is out, which is a plus
as always if in doubt carry a road flare and napalm
pocket faraday cage, problem solved!
Just run the lighter down your leg spinning the wheel. It dries it out super fast
Dank video
Dank komment.
Well now I gotta put 2 bics in my fire kit. Thanks a lot guy! Lol. You can blow a flint bic dry tho. And lile others mentioned you can still use an empty flint bic as a striker.
Great tip!
Good little bit of info man!!! But as an ex-smoker I seem to remember those electronic ones being more likely to stop working all together. Maybe they’ve improved over the years, I’ll have test one out again myself :)
You remember accuratley, they do crap out regularly! still do, always have!
You can make or buy refillable Bic lighters. Never buy a lighter again. Refill and replace flint as needed, usually after a month or two.
or just buy a clipper lighter.
You run the flint bic down your pants until it sparks again then it works again process takes 1 minute 👍
no it doesn't. that only works if the lighter is a little bit wet. not on a truely soaked lighter
Humble Trekker yes it does you twit I been smoking for 20 yrs I think I know any soaked lighter will work with my method
Well I've been smoking for 30 years and can tell you it doesn't
it does work may not be the easiest way but it does maybe not the best solution or maybe it doesn't always & humble trekker your just one person saying it doesn't work vs unlisted amount of people who have discovered the tricks of lighters. 20 yrs or 30yrs time has nothing to do with it.
try it on denim after blowing / tapping dry
I call god of thunder to light my shit, who needs a lighter.
good call
👍👍
make a video on why clipper or zippo lighters are way better than any bic lighter
Zippos are not better, they run out of fuel, the wicks fuck up, the flints break, if you sit on them the hinges break, expensive if you lose them, they are cool gear but many weaknesses.Wind proof and constant flame is the only positives. Clippers are good
Roll the wheel Bic on your pant leg. start at your pocket and it will start sparking before you get to your knee.
No it doesn’t. You are approximately the 100th person to write this comment. It does not work.
@@verysurvival You need to remove the childsafety.. only then the wheel can have the proper contact with the jeans..
Great tip Brother, but Bic's can still be used after they get wet. One of the great tips to do is gently run the strike wheel against your pants or even the side sole of your shoe because its rubber like this will help dry out the 'flint'. Me personally i prefer the Bic with flint as the pezio electric lighters are prone to breaking very easily, plus when the lighter runs outta butane you can still use the "flint" to help start a fire, as its basically a micro size ferrocirum rod.
Thanks for the vids Ive watched a few already and like your vibes and style your nice and very specific, i had to subscribe lol
Have a Good one

+GODSOFTHEGUITARS right about piezos being delicate, this one broke a few days after I made the vid. All things considered the flint ones are better.
Thats too ironic lol
GODSOFTHEGUITARS you called it bro
Humble Trekker
I'm really starting to think that most of the RUclips audience are a bunch of retards. you make a video clearly showing how both lighters compare to being submerged in water and the comments left are just amazing. LOL
I know. I am left scratching my head at some of them quite often
Flick the Flint for about ten minutes and it will work
I am so glad the non electric lighter is not water proof because I took it apart and thought it was going to explode so I found out and put it in water and I stopped smelling gas so xdd
wow glad it did not explode !
ig man im soo sorry but the fuckin' autocorrect messed it up
no problem, accidents happen
Thank you i appriciate your kindness you got yourself a new subscriber
Great Bro! Take Care and have a great weekend
Bullshit I Always Find Lighters (Normal Bic) In The Bottom Of The River Or Under The Waterfall. All You Need To Do Is Blow As Hard As You Can Straight Down The Chamber And Wallah. (Doesn't Matter If Its Rusted Or Recently Dropped in water)
Which river?
Humble Trekker Southern California
Voilá, not Wallah :))))))))))))))
It's piezoelectric, not electronic. There are no electronic components inside. Cheers!
Dan Slotea Bic make them, and Bic call them Electronic
