  • Multiphysics topology optimization (MPTO) is a numerical design approach that optimally distributes material within a prescribed volume in order to find a structural layout with maximum performance based on coupled Multiphysics models. The most relevant models for the design of heat exchangers and cooling systems in injection tooling include solid mechanics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics. In contrast to traditional heat exchangers, which are designed following guidelines for specific fluid-flow channel shapes, the complex layouts from MPTO are numerically generated by an algorithm that optimally distributes fluid and solid phases within an arbitrary design domain. The results are complex, non-intuitive heat exchanger designs with increased performance.
