    How is it possible that people that frequent a self-defense preparedness channel and that may have to use deadly force someday have such sensitive feelings? I’ve only used irons on my carry pistols and love the gun Amish joke. Life is way too short to get upset over jokes.

    Jack Wilson and Eli Dicken both dropped an active threat at range using irons. As the saying goes, it's the Indian, not the arrow.

    • @90whatever
      @90whatever 3 месяца назад +3

      And Dicken was stupidly carrying FMJ range ammo in his Glock…which is why he had to make so many hits to put the target down. Learn from his mistake! Carry good JHP in your EDC.

      @@90whatever It's very common to have to land multiple rounds in order to stop a threat, even with the best defensive ammo. Dicken landed 8 shots and it's easy to find footage of cops emptying entire magazines of Gold Dot or HST in order to stop a threat.

      @@AppalachianDualSport …and if you choose to use FMJ range ammo for your defensive carry option you DEFINITELY will need to land multiple hits to stop the threat…they will zip right through a living backstop without causing much damage outside of the hole they will do through and through.

    I have a confession, I carry a 17 or a 34 with xs big dots and I am gun Amish. I know my holds out to 25 to be able to make “precision” shots. At closer distances threat focus is the way and using the backplate on a striker fired handgun is very doable with a presentation that has been done over and over again through dry practice. It’s all fundamentals just at a certain point it’s subconscious.

    All my life was focus on iron sights to be the most accurate. In the last 2 years I've had added red dot to some of my carry. Red dot dose make me more accurate beyond 10 yards. If that day of carry I decide on iron site only choice. I still have confidence in iron sights, to fall back on all of my training. Thanks John for your video and all of the asp videos through the years.

    One of John's most endearing qualities is his goofball, tongue in cheek sense of humor!! I was a late adopter of the dot, and certainly acknowledge the advantage of the dot, but I also own iron sighted pistols as well, and am comfortable with them.

    I think the fundamental lesson has always been to train with what you have to be proficient with it. As we know, not enough people train enough to be good enough with their gun, whether they have a dot or irons. I've been irons-only for a while, using XS Minimalist sights, with a bright orange square front and blacked out rear. In a class the other day, a student let me shoot their dot gun. No prior experience with dots before, beyond knowing about the basics, and I was immediately more accurate on the exercise than with my irons. Dots really are like cheating, it's almost immediately intuitive, at least for me. After shooting the gun, I exclaimed, "Fuck irons! I need to get me one of these." hahaha Actually I'm considering whether to sell some of my guns to fund a red dot for my Glock 19

    Last Saturday, at a club match, I won our carry pistol match using a box stock Glock17.4, including the stock plastic sights. (although I did put a dab of orange paint on the front sight dot) Granted most of the targets were close and fairly large. But I was by far the oldest shooter (67) with bad eyes. Irons are certainly relevant but dots are wonderful The MOST important thing is to focus on the target regardless of sighting system. I am used to blurry sights and that fact no longer concerns me. Blurry sights are a fact of life and that's okay. If I were after the tiniest groups possible, I'd always use a dot.

    Red dots are an amazing advantage. I was skeptical at first but after making the switch I was shocked at how much faster and more accurate I was, especially when we get past 15-20 yards.
    My USPSA scores got a massive boost (I measure myself against myself, not the guys with $3,000 race guns).
    I was out consistently shattering clay pigeons at 30 yards with my 3” barrel Shield Plus (with a dot). That’s difficult to do for me even with a full size iron sighted pistol.
    Irons work fine for most “practical” shooting, but if you could eek out every possible advantage, why wouldn’t you?

    I went to the Holosun 507c green dot on my three Glocks after Jack in Texas dropped the perp with the shotgun with a headshot. I was like I can make that shot but I have to get my glasses (readers) on to see my irons. Now I don’t have to worry about that. 😎😎

      Then shoot with only one eye open, the 'you must shoot with both eyes open' is not a hill I'll die on. I know of many shooters with vision issues that require them to close an eye and while some could do some work to change it but I am aware of one shooter that did over a year and a half of vision therapy to resolve their issue and I just don't know if the juice is woth the squeeze for everyone.

    Triggers that stack suck; get a Kahr. A red-dot makes a gun about an inch taller, so when concealment is an issue, you might have to play off the choice between a two-finger grip and a dot versus a gun with a three-finger grip and iron sights.

    • @ASPextra

      Why does a dot affect how many fingers you use?

      @fsilber330 3 месяца назад +1

      @@ASPextra If more than five inches of gun height causes printing (e.g. due to a skinny person's torso not being flat enough anywhere), then your choice might be between:
      (1) a gun that is five inches tall (e.g. Glock 19 or Kahr TP9) and no red dot,
      versus
      (2) a gun four inches tall (e.g. a Glock 26 or Kahr PM9) with a red dot using up the final inch.

    I bought my G19 and learned for about 1k on irons and then transitioned to a dot. A nice RMR that cost as much as the gun haha. I can close my eyes and draw and see a dot no problem. Any future guns will definitely be Holosun though. The RMR is stupid expensive.
