Pam Shriver has always been one of the most highly intelligent & articulate persons on the women's tennis tour. I remember that coach. His name was Don Candy, an Australian from where I came from. Mr and Mrs Shriver of Baltimore had some misgivings about their teenage daughter playing on the women's tour, but they thought they had a trusted individual in Mr Candy, who assured them they had nothing to worry about, and he and his wife would look after her. How terribly unfortunate that this trust was so misplaced. In all work places, regardless of the tennis tour, there needs to be both training and mechanisms to address a problem, if members become aware of inappropriate behaviour, towards them. Because of her well spokenness, there is absolutely no doubt Pam can be a powerful voice in raising the stakes here, and I applaud her for it.
Very interesting that nobody of that generation has commented on what andrea jaegar has said recently. That she was sexually abused by a female wta official when she was underage and that it was so bad that she couldn't go in the locker room. When she reported it to the WTA, they threatened to withdraw her sister's scholarship. Andrea also mentioned how bullying was rife among the players and she'd found glass in her shoes and the strings of her racquets cut. Steffi Graf said in 1996 that an older player had tried to form a relationship with her when she was a young teen. It seems the women's tour back then had a culture more like a women's prison.
dont forget that even serenas coach had an overly close (ya thats right u got it) relationship with her for quite some time! how sick and inappropriate is THAT! VERY VERY UNPROFESSIONAL if u ask me, and parents still send their teen daughters to his tennis facility, oh my do they REALIZE the DANGER theyre putting their girls in? and how many OTHER coaches do this! sounds like the seedy world of gymnastics coaches ...and what about ballerina coaches? the stuff no one talks about, the casting couch as it were, eh!! here its the casting court(ing) of young gal players...work hard play hard and shut up about how i train you, you NEED this to drive your hormones so u can play harder, etc is THAT what these guys TELL these girls? my ears are burning....
The tennis tour is a grossly unhealthy environment and very few top players come out of it without being very damaged. Novak Djokovic is a great tennis player, but, like many others who've been in that position, he's also a bit nuts.
I commend Pam for all she’s doing including speaking out on sexual abuse. However, she overstepped in commenting about “the science” when talking about Djokovic’s decision on the vaccine.
Proud of Pam to reveal this relationship with Don Candy , when you have a coach who is a middle aged man coaching a 17 yr old. 21 is the age where no one can say it’s wrong because the tennis player at some point can legally give consent.
Actually it's 18 and even lower depending on country/jurisdiction. But that's not really what's about it. It's an abuse of power and influence for a coach to go there.
Is her old coach still alive, or his wife, kids? I imagine that whilst it might have had a massive impact on her life, surely it must be very upsetting for her old coach's family and friends.
Sorry Pam. However you were 17 to 21 years old. At some point it was just as much your responsibility to lay down some boundaries as his. I'm not trying to minimize any trauma that you might have but for the most part you were a tennis star and a consenting adult. No shade intended.
Except many of them weren't back then. It was far from unusual to to see 14 year olds about. Martina Hingis, Monica Seles, Jennifer Capriati, Tracy Austin, Andrea Jaegar.

Serena was in her 30s at that time, not a teen like Pam.
@@kloatlanta i know that, but still its creepy and unprofessional.
Way different situation. Serena was in her late 20s when they started to work togeather. Not a 17 year old.
Do you know that Pam did not enjoy consensual sex with Serena's coach OR do you just enjoy playing the victim game?

That would be on HIM.
maybe he shouldnt date his students if he didnt want his family to be upset in the first place
The old coach is deceased. Don't know about his wife or kids. Pam mentioned he would be in his 90s if he was alive today.
I find it interesting that a person of supposedly wealthy parentage apparently has trouble finding another coach.

The women players on the tour are adults. People need to be stop being victims.

@@zeddeka So don’t let your underage daughter work as an adult, training and traveling all over the world.
@@zeddeka McDonald’s won’t even hire you at 14. You can’t work at Lowe’s until you are over 18. Child labor laws exist for a reason.
